    19:47 LOL. The numbers I saw were about 367 hp before the boost then he says 417 hp after boost and ad's that up to a 40hp gain. That's not great math guys. It's 50hp gain. Love the video!

      If you watch the third NA pull, it made 373 rwhp (16:45 into the video) - 367 was the 2nd pull; at 22:12, our third electric turbo pull, we made 436 rwhp - total gain of 64 rwhp. But that was with a small motor, small impeller and small battery pack. Once I went bigger on all three (and changed the ESC), we did some drag testing - and it made a lot more than 436 rwhp: ruclips.net/video/AOL3Qyczt3Y/видео.html Now with an even bigger pack, we should be making a lot more power than even that test.

    The knowledge and the sureness of ray just shows exactly how much he does what he is good at. I watch many many tuners on RUclips i.e pfi speed, ksr performance and fabrication, fasterproms… and they all prove that once you’ve done enough of what you absolutely love doing it becomes second nature.       Buddy of mine was on/off driving from Atlanta to Nashville in a Nissan Frontier (he was like 25 age isn't an excuse 🤣) and it took every bit of teeth grit to not say anything because I was tired AF and didn't want him to tell me to drive lol!

    Loved it. Good video. Nice power gains. No one drives with the hood open. Heat soak affects power. Very few people drive without a filter.

      Yes sir - and this is through a powerglide. There's a lot of slippage in the converter on a dyno. It actually makes about 500 hp on motor, and 575 with the little electric turbo.     that was awesome , just what i was expecting !!! love the way it took the spikes out of the power graph at top end , im guessing if you add more boost you might start to lose a bit due to heat ?, looking forward to see hos you go in the future , havent seen your build up yet , will look to see if i can find

    Thank you for doing this, Alex! Those are amazing gains for such little boost! Do you think once you have a solid design able to efficiently push around 8 psi that you might start a company building and selling a viable electric supercharger kit? There are alot of benefits to a forced induction setup that has no need for intercoolers, oil pan taps or a belt drive to power the blower. Not to mention the benefits of much cooler IATs!

    I don't think I'm teaching anyone anything that they don't already know, but I find it interesting that you were surprised at the gains at low boost. People like to talk about boost pressure, and it's not a useless number, but boost is a result of restrictions in the intake and for a "normal" turbo, also restrictions in the exhaust.
    What actually makes power is the volume of air, and if you have a really free flow engine, then you can have a big turbo, pushing a lot of air, without having much boost. The electric charger will not cause a restriction in the exhaust, so it will free up more power / produce more power than a "normal" turbo at the same CFM / boost.
    Really high boost numbers are cool, fun and exciting, but in the end, high boost is a result of restriction, and the only way that can be good is if the only restriction is your cylinder volume. Free flow intake, head and valves will make for more efficient boost and lower pressure readings until your cylinder becomes the restriction.
    Of course, everything I said was sloppy and a bit of a generalization.

      Those are good points, but I was simply comparing the gains to every other form of forced induction I'd built over the last few decades. This made so much more power per psi that I was shocked. And this was with the wrong impeller - it's what I had at the time. It was enough to keep me pursing the project.

    Thanks so much for sharing your experiment with an electric turbo, and in general presenting the results in a manner that us non-electrical engineers can understand and appreciate. I realize that an incredible amount of smart work went into getting the results you have, and the average home viewer could not replicate them. What you are demonstrating though, I believe, is the very real practicality of a mass-produced device that would be well received by enthusiasts across a range of manufacturers.
    (In fact, I love the irony that your experimentation is on a good old American Ford and not a Japanese 2-cylindar where everybody already claims to have all the answers.)
    There appears to be one company based in the Netherlands producing a similar device, but it is not technically more advanced than yours from my observation.
    If you could somehow get real aftermarket tuning support (COBB) for mass-produced cars, the mechanical would seem to be simple enough if it was installed inline in front of the turbocharger.
    Anyway, congrats. And keep control of your IP. And if possible, work with producers of trusted tuning modules to create a kit that would totally change things for us turbo-lagged schmucks who swear by a < 3.0 liter mechanically turbocharged engine that has to be woken out of bed for any initial throttle response.
    Perhaps you realize or perhaps not, but such quick spooling of your electric device would eliminate turbo lag associated with exhaust-drive turbochargers, and need only a second or two per demand do its job before exhaust boosting would be able to take over.

    Great video brother. My wife and I also work 40/50 hrs a week and take care of my mom and mother in law dementia/ Kidneys I have a 05 the wife has a 06 gto it's hard to find time to do anything so just subscribed when i heard you speak of your father. Love the car.

    Its going to show a high current draw at the start due to the high torque load on the eclectic motor having to get things moving from naught to full rpm. Nice work sir. 🔧🐎⚡ 📈

I'm moving away from small lipo packs (relatively small) and pulling out the big guns - I've got over 100lbs of LTO cells sitting here now. By golly, we're going to give it all the power she can take! And, if my past history is anything to go by, we'll probably give it more power than she can take... and then I'll have to buy a new motor...

    I think if you would use a bit of nitrous oxide through the turbo, just to get it started for a few seconds, to keep it cool 😎 you would need a parachute to stop it.

    I do wonder if there was something else going on because if you went from 26 to 24 and then and it picked up everywhere but when you added more starting at 5k well you still picked up even under I'm not sure how much that was if it was like 1 or 2 but it looks like 5ish but it where it was like 26 it didn't drop down to that first run number

      Another weird bit about this engine. When I ported my heads, for whatever reason legendary cylinder head god Darin Morgan decided to help guide me about chamber shape via email. He said there were a few things easy to do on my heads to make them much more efficient (i.e. need less timing). So I did, and he was right. It's also worth noting that my timing pointer is 3 degrees off - as in, low. 24 degrees is really 27 degrees. I just never bothered to fix it.

    Simply amazing. I was really looking into Torque amp until i seen your build. I would love to build one of this for my GM 3.6L V6 in my 2011 CTS Coupe.

    I used a yard blower as a turbo booster electric. With an inverter, just hit the switch &.bottle up and go. II didn't expect it to work, but damned it was fast. It's was only intended a F'n joke. And just learned I built an electric hybrid / it's an EV!
    Can I have that variance to plug in? DMV

    I'm aiming to drop something like this in a 99 Kawasaki Concours with an original 80s Ninja 1000cc mill. I've got room for 48V's worth of LiPo batteries.

      That's more than enough to make some significant gains. Just yesterday I posted a video on a "new and improved" version - which should make about the same power than what we ultimately made (we made a lot more that what you saw in this video - check out the drag strip test: ruclips.net/video/AOL3Qyczt3Y/видео.html ); here's yesterday's vid: ruclips.net/video/O1AjzwfIYgc/видео.html That should make about the same - 650 hp on a 500hp base engine. But it's cheaper, easier to make and more compact. The original unit (the one who's first iteration you saw here), is getting a 53 hp brushless motor, 1,000 amp ESC and will be powered by massive LTO packs in the trunk (already installed, actually - all 62 lbs of them). That one should be good for about 800-850 hp.

    Thats common engine physics the higher the rpm the faster the piston speed. It needs more timing to utilize the power of the ignited gas. This is where fuel injection wins over a standard carbureted setup.

    I've been building a similar setup with an old vortech. I have microsquirt controlling everything and am familiar with tuner studio. Have you thought about using either pwm or a tps based controller to ramp up motor speed as engine speed increases?

      In my case, I don't see the point - as long as the compressor stays out of surge, I want it to be like Scotty from Star Trek - "I'm givin' her all she's got!" My application is drag racing. I guess for road racing, it might be different. Thanks for subscribing!

    Imagine if you could use the impeller as a throttle plate. Remove the throttle body and use the supercharger motor controller in its place 👀. It could potentially use regenerative engine braking

    I believe like from what Richard holdener has said and makes sense to me but that the drivetrain loses are mostly a fixed number with a small percentage so 64hp at the wheel I'd be surprised if it was more than like 70hp at the flywheel

      Remember it's a glide - even a tight converter is pretty darn loose. It's not the glide that's causing the dyno power loss, it's the converter. And you can verify it by looking at the fuel consumption. Over the decades of dyno testing, and seeing the engine rpm vs dyno wheel speed readings, you can get a pretty good idea - and for this setup it's been pretty solidly at 24%.

    That's what dynos are for you picked up a lot in the lower RPM I wonder if you had a back to back compression at the track because I bet that might be enough to tell on the track

    Shoot man, I manually activate mine off a switch on the shift lever before 3000 RPM all the time; but I'm also running Titan O-ring head gaskets.

      @@AlexLTDLX Well you will laugh .. i have a 1600cc Motor so obviously i need far less of everything.. I have garret GT3076R/gtx will 11 blade extended tip machined wheel. I have a TP CM4070 1400kv motor and that will be direct drive to the wheel.. I will be going 24s lifpo4 . For 5psi @ 6000prm in theory i need 5.2kw applied to the shaft (not startup power) but the motor and electrical system is not 100% efficient so lets call it 6kw.. i can in theory apply 15kw of power if need (not spin up) BUT im sure i wont need 15kw.

    I know this is a old video, but is that a throttle by wire system? I was wondering if this would benefit the performance, and economy by having a computer control the turbo speed, throttle, choke and timing on the fly?

      Iirc, an m90 turned to 15k rpms moves about 650cfm at 10psi and requires some 45hp to turn.

      I ran an M90 back in the day: www.motortrend.com/events/0410mm-ford-muscle-car-comparison/ We came in third. You'll see my car. Yes, you could run an M90 with a brushless motor (but I wouldn't use this one - you need more torque and less RPM; an outrunner motor is probably your friend.) That said, all the benefits of positive displacement blowers are negated by an electric centrifugal unit; heck, they make more boost at low rpm. And they're also more efficient, smaller, lighter, etc. I don't see a reason to run a positive displacement in this application, certainly not an M90 - ancient technology, inefficient, etc. This supercharger only costs $625 new...

    Been following for a while. Good to see this thing make boost! Would I be right in saying that, if that turbo is capable of flowing enough air for 430bhp. It would have the potential to flow 430bhp on any engine? I'd love to get my hands on one of these to test on a 2 litre Honda k20 engine. I wonder if i could squeze 300bhp from the 200bhp engine. What do you reckon? Air flow is directly related to power. So more are is more power. Let's say the k20 flows 350cfm. And the turbo could flow 500cfm. That could make 40% more power?

      Thanks. And not exactly. The problem lies in pressure ratios and the shape of the compressor map along with exponentially rising drive power needed to turn the impeller wheel faster. In other words, there's a pressure ratio (i.e. boost) limit. And that's probably around 7-8 psi with a single unit. Keep in mind, it made 437 to the wheels through a glide - that's about 580 hp at the flywheel. Up from about 500 N/A - from a 6 liter V8. On a smaller engine like a Honda, you'd probably want a smaller wheel to get the boost # up. On the bright side, you'd be able to reach a higher impeller speed than we've seen so far. Sizing the compressor side is very critical to making something like this work, and you have to see what's available brushless-motor wise that matches. It's actually a pretty delicate balance.

      Because you can't dyno a powerglide that low. What happens is you get into the powerglide's torque multiplication region; causing two things - hugely inflated torque numbers (like up to 2.4x what it actually measures) and the flare generally doesn't recover until later, if ever in the pull, leading to a low peak hp number. Dyno testing a powerglide is a bit of an art, to be honest. It's not easy.

      You'd end up with worse performace because the discharge curve of a supercapacitor is linear - as in continuously going down. And you need voltage to spin the blower as fast as possible. Lithium batteries have a much more favorable discharge curve and have close 100x the power density.

    Pull ending 22min looks like 51.4v @ 273a = 14KW... both the Volt meter and the Ameter are relatively slow so actual wattage is probably less (and the video is shaky to so voltage might be lower). The Peak current is not that interesting because that is spin up current and that will always be great because on an electric motor because max torque and current is at 0 rpm tapering down to max RPM.. Arguably the power is fed to this to fast and thats why you get the big inrush of current at the start.. You could slow the delivery of power and make it more linier with something like an Arduino instead of going from 0 to 100% with your current servo tester setup.

It's also important to understand that 11.662w is not 11.6kw of Air compression because the motors is not 100% efficient so it's probably closer to 10KW of actual compression / flow power.
      So while it does apply more power than 11.6KW at the beginning that's not a useful number (21KW) (if you changed the "ramping" on the ESC you could get a higher peak)........... im just interested because this whole thing should have been much better than it was and thats probably because it doesn't actually apply the 20 Plus KW ........................... IT"S ALL GOOD KEEP GOING.

      Both your points are accurate. When I'm running numbers I don't use peak figures. But I'm still blown away that a tiny battery pack like that can generate such massive bursts in power. I'm currently re-doing the battery box to use both sets of batteries (I have a 9,000mah set and a 6,000mah set) in series to minimize voltage drop. That plus the new motor plus some motor timing adjustments are the three major things left. Anything more would involve a major re-tooling (which might happen too).

      Don't make me add it up. I've bought a lot of stuff that's blown up, not used or replaced with something else. And it's not over yet. Heck, I paid $32 for a 5.2 mm carbide drill bit to drill one hole, $43 of .26 ounces of conductive grease and $50 for 50 grams of special high-speed grease. And that's just little stuff. Hundred in batteries, etc. I have to stop. My bank account is sad.

      @@VetalK You can't really judge my experience from a $$ perspective because I'm doing a lot of research and testing. But if you just add up the motor, ESC and battery pack (though I'm on my second ESC and I've got two sets of batteries - this is only for 1) you're looking at $1,050. Then there's capacitors and heavy wiring stuff - maybe another $250 worth. And you haven't even gotten to the blower itself, plus the machine work, tools, etc. It's not cheap. I could've put chinese twin turbos on this car and run 8's already. But I'm not doing this for that - I want to see how far we can go and I believe that this will be the future of power adders.

      You have to remember that R&D is the expensive part. Once you have the fruits of that labor complete and are able to streamline the design and possibly mass produce it can you bring the costs down and have a final number. I agree with Alex though. This is definitely the future of power adders and it's only going to get better as battery tech advances and you're able to run a much more powerful electric motor to turn the impeller because of it.

      Lol. It's supposed to to stand for "Limited." As in, "limited edition." But there was nothing limited edition about these cars - they made trillions of them. Well, mine is Limited because it's an actual LX model - came with a 5.0 HO engine in it from the factory. They only made about 3,200 of those. But yeah, looking at it from another perspective, why would you call a car, "Limited?" Sort of like being rear-ended by a Probe. I mean really. Did no one think that through? Or Exxon/Mobil's convenience stores (I worked at the ad agency that did their commercials) - seriously, say the plural of "On The Run" out loud...

    Hi,
    I drive a 1.6l 16V Toyota, wich I think would be perfect for a electric turbo...
    What would you think would be the perfect setup?
    12v, 24v, 48v? big or small turbo, what kind of electric motor is het most powerfull, but does not cost like 3000 dollars... :-)
    so not on a budget, but more like a good balance between cost/power/relaiabillty.
    with all the experience you have got in all this time I wonder if you could awnsers this....

    interesting electric system but why? The benefit of a turbo is the re-use of wasted exhaust gases so this is more like a supercharger but with less efficiency. Or am i missing something? what's the advantage of this?

      Good question - you have much more precise control of the boost, the boost is far more efficient (turbos incur pumping losses), showing much greater hp gains per psi, and installation and removal is orders of magnitude easier.     Lol id maybe believe it if I'd find at least one video of this car flooring it on the road. For all we know this thing has a 50 shot of nos hidden somewhere. Even the best e turbo on the market right now thats 2500 and has its big ass battery bank can barely build 3-5psi boost on a 4 cyl cobalt. And that e turbo ACTUALLY works. This is simply bullhockity.

    Since the whipple made 560whp on 15 psi and this made 436whp at 2psi than this is clearly more efficient
    but what about timing for both setups did u use conservative timing with the wipple and more crazy timing with this one?
    Because if way less boost and the same timing than this is extremly safer or am I missing something here?!?!

      That's a good observation. The Whipple was spinning so fast it was way off the compressor map; as such, it was making a lot of heat. Even with the A/W I couldn't safely get to the same timing. I ran 17* on pump gas and 19* on Q16. But I did see how much each 2 degree step was worth hp-wise, and it was less the closer we got to optimum timing. But because it was so far off the compressor map, it had to be only about 50% efficient (never mind the 70hp power draw off the crank and any losses through the intercooler). With the SC impeller, this thing is somewhere around 60% efficient, but it's still just off the map. With an Si impeller, we should actually be on the map and around 70% efficient at peak hp. No matter what, this still generates more than twice the HP per psi than the Whipple did. But as you guessed, because this current boost level is so low, and MAT temps are only hitting 120* (measured in the lower intake at runner #5), there's no need to pull any timing on it. There probably will be need to pull maybe a couple of degrees if we get up to 5-6 psi peak, but we should be well over 500 rwhp at that point anyway; but it should still be far safer tune-wise (as you suspect). Also, keep in mind that on the leave off the transbrake it'll be making even more boost - so it should leave pretty hard and kind of "lay down" down track. I expect good ETs with relatively low MPH as a result. There's only one way to know for sure - more improvements and testing!

      1) if I remember correctly on engine masters rhey used a positive displacement supercharger and gained barely anything at 4 psi and all the power started appearing once they had some timing in it. Definitly boost doesnt tell the whole story.
      2)I am extremely surprised that you are emphasizing a hard launch from this electric supercharger even though u use to run whipple which usually have monsterous low end torque.
      3) what would u think about a ginormous turbo wheel made for 2000hp spining 35000 rpm it would be at the bottom of its comp map but moving tons of air with barely some boost wouldnt that yield some safe power and low intake temps?

      With PD blowers, it all kind of depends. Only in recent years have the blowers gotten big enough to keep up. Over the years, I've had an M90, M112 and most recently the Whipple on this car. The M112 could only muster 7-8 psi and was spinning at over 18,000 rpm to get there. Even then it went 10.5x at around 127 mph. The reason I'm pushing the hard launch thing is that I have the benefit of a trans brake in this car. On the Whipple, I could only get to 3,200 rpm on the leave before it became traction limited. With this little contraption, I can leave as high as I want to - I'm thinking in the 4,000 rpm ballpark. The Whipple on the brake at 3,200 rpm was already making 13 psi. It left like a freight train. BUT there's a problem with having too much low end torque. Cylinder pressure gets extremely high, and your tuning window becomes quite small. That's what's great about this - I can activate it (or have the ECU activate it) wherever it'll work best. As for the huge turbo idea; I started there too. I was looking at compressor maps from big turbos designed for CAT engines. But ultimately, bearing mounting and the compressor maps weren't as "good" - meaning the wheels were huge and would take a lot more torque to spin - as the Vortechs. That's why I went this route. I'm sure there are a number of viable permutations out there. The limiting factor is really what's available brushless motor and ESC-wise. Since we're getting nowhere near the max rpm of this motor (50k), I may step up to the next size up (40k rpm limit) for the additional torque. There's also some tuning that can be done to the brushless motor's timing (it's adjustable and kind works like timing an ICE, but not exactly) and the PWM frequency that might buy a few thousand more rpm. Really, we're just getting started here. I'm kind of jazzed about how much more room for improvement there actually is. Should be a blast finding out.

      This is the earliest iteration of the Sledgehammer - before it was called the sledgehammer. This one had a different ESC and a different, less powerful motor, and this had a Vortech SC trim impeller and volute - now it's an Si trim impeller and volute. A torqamp is limited to about 200 flywheel hp.

      Again, no you wouldn't. This is a powerglide. You can't just slam the throttle on the dyno with a glide because you get a massive torque spike due to the converter. Believe me, this thing hits like a sledgehammer. The current electric turbo hits harder than the Whipple did.       There are two reasons. One because we didn't trigger it until Ray started the actual dyno pull so there was about a second or two ramp up time and the second reason is because it's a powerglide. In truth, it makes a lot more low-end power. Watch the video where we drag tested it. Check out the difference in the 0 to 60 time in the 60 ft. And that was still a soft leave. I'm pretty sure this is going to at least match if not pass the Whipple and low end power. I expect the 60 ft times to creep into the high 1.3 second range.

      Hi Justin. Turns out it wasn't the rear main seal, just a leaking valve cover gasket. It's been fixed. The PCV system does indeed have a one-way check valve; I've run tons of boost through this car over the years. The last setup saw 15 psi from a Whipple.
