When my now teenage son was a baby, this was his calm down song. I would sing it through x2 then just hum the tune. By the end of the humming he was either calm or asleep.
This is my favorite Christmas carol/hymn. I have fond memories of hearing and singing this song as a child and also when my daughters were children, I would sing this lovely song to them while putting them to bed for the night. It is such a beautiful lullaby! To answer your question, I am an American and am only familiar with the first version that you played. This hymn is soothing, peaceful, and joyful. Thank you!
I love the "rocking" effect of the Kirkpatrick tune (the second one). When I'm playing it on organ, as I will be on Tuesday night, I have to take care not to let the words make me emotional and tearful. In the past it's all gone a bit wrong because of that!
My brother had dementia. When he no longer remember his sisters, he could sing along with hymns from our childhood. God is good!

(And fit us for heaven to live with thee there)..........He completes what He started in us❤
Thank you, dear Brother, for bringing the Spirit through music.
Thank you . God bless you endlessly! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻✝️.

Thank you. I truly appreciate your bringing forward these ______
I cannot find any one word that could fill that blank
We normally sing the first. But this year our Choir learnt the second one. Both are precious 💕. And ours say ,fit us for heaven.
I love your videos, Luke! I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful Christmas season!
Lovely. Thank you.
Same thing! Brother in law sang along ! It was his last Christmas here!
I remember as a child and adult singing it always with hand motions. Made it even more special

Thank you so beautiful
The first rendition, but with "fit us for heaven to live with thee there ❤
Love these. I have a beautiful Christmas song on a cd from Our daily Bread. It's called How far is ut to Bethlehem. Would love for you to do that 1.😊
We sang the first one.
I grew up singing this hymn to "Mueller", and was very surprised that there was another commonly used tune.
For me it was Kirkpatrick that was always sung, and hearing "Mueller" for the first time was such a surprise! Yet I think both work so well.
Definitely sang the first version. I've only heard the 2nd version on the radio.
Second tune is more commonly sung in the UK 🇬🇧
