@Mr. Prick Well, I have a few questions. In 2000, you had 120 fighter intercepts for off-course planes, within minutes. Yet on that day, transponders were off, despite them not only being well aware of a possible terrorist attack (Bin Ladin determined to strike in US), but there also being FOUR jet airlines going off course. The ongoing military exercise at the time caused mass confusion and made it easier for hijackers to reach their desired destination. Some US fighters literally landed in other countries. Unusual stock trading occurred, bets were placed indicating that United and AA's stock would fall by up to 300x the average amount. The PATRIOT act was already in store, and was clearly waiting for some sort of event to occur. I would genuinely like to see a rebuttal to these. If you do have one, feel free to tell me. It clearly wasn't an inside job, but they knew it would happen and let about 3,000 Americans die anyways? Why? To justify the PATRIOT act and imperialism. Not that they really had much of a say in what Al Qaeda would do considering Pentagon fatalities.
“A second plane has hit the second tower. America is under attack … and I’m watching a child read.” Knowing war is upon you and seeing the innocence of the babies before your eyes. Chilling.
I'm no Bush fan and at the time 13 year old me thought wtf is he just sitting there! Now as an adult I get it. That came as such a shock and sitting there with the kids staying calm gave him time to process it and decide what to next and had he got up panicking that would have scared those kids and the world, he needed to stay calm and find out exactly what had happened because everyone was getting their information from the media who filmed it as it was happening.
I remember coming home from the special needs school I had attended. My father said that the plane crashed into the building and my Grandfather was in the building. Hearing the news at 9 years old became terrifying because my relationship with my Grandad was perfect and loving. My father instantly knew he shouldn't have said that. However I understood that he was in shock. He then proceeded to take my mind of the matter and play wrestle with me and it worked. Reflecting upon that moment I felt a special bond with my dad and later, a relief that my Grandad was late for work that day.
Oh I'm so glad he was late that day as I'm sure you and your family were. I had a special bond with my Grandfather and when he was killed, it was like a knife in my soul kind of pain that I still feel 20 years later. It's good that your father helped you through that by distraction. It's not very easy to understand at such a young age. 🙇🏻♀🙏🏻
20 years later and every single time, as soon as the planes hit, the towers going down, the people who were jumping.. every single time I start crying. I was 10 and I do remember every bit of that day, including knowing how people were feeling personally after the phone call from my mom that my uncle Billy who worked on the 78th floor of the South Tower, didn't make it out, they survived the impact as they were on the opposite side and he was able to save the few people who were with him and tried to help others but was caught when it went down, he was a marine so anyone left behind was not an option, he was a lot of fun, we were pretty close so I was very upset to hear he was gone

I was 18 on 9/11 and had just started college. I didn't like W at all but I felt then and feel now that his reaction was appropriate. He was in front of a class full of children - the last thing you want to do is frighten them. If he had panicked, everyone would have panicked. He did the right thing in that moment.
Same here. I just happened to run into my International Relations prof watching it unfold on TV through an open door. I thought it was a special effects class. He somberly said it was actually happening. As a poli sci expert, he knew the hell that was about to be unleashed. My young naive brain had no idea just how much knowledge he was about to share with me. As an adult, I now recognize the look on his face as fear.
I mean, there is a a lot between a) running out of the room in panic, and b) staying for a while and reading a kids book. He could've just said, hey kids, I'm really sorry but as a president I'm very busy and I have to be somewhere else right now?
I remember we gave him crap for his lack of reaction at the time but looking back now what was he supposed to do? I think he handled the news in that situation well
I agree. He got heat from a ton of people. I don’t know which side he got crap from because I was too young to remember or care. It didn’t matter anyway. We weren’t left or right, republican or democrat. We were American.
I remember as well an interview with Andy Card sometime in the years after, where he said he deliberately stepped back so Bush couldn't ask him questions. Don't remember why, I guess so that it didn't become a scene in front of the kids. But yeah, to sit there stoic after that hot potato gets dropped in your lap was leadership.
Doesn't matter how many times I watch the footage, doesn't matter that I know the events before and 20 years on, still makes my stomach turn and my heart drop.

I was a senior in high school on 9/11. I remember the criticism of President Bush for his reaction… Looking back on it over 20 years later, I’m still confident that he had the reaction a strong leader should have, but damn what a crazy situation to be in when you get that news. Of all places, a classroom reading with children.
His reaction was to start a multi-decade long war based on a lie, spy on American citizens, torture prisoners of war, and create an illegal torture camp in Cuba. He should be jailed for war crimes.
@@thespankmyfrank to be honest, the closest equivalent of what Bush is in the grand scheme of things is Grant. Someone that is well-meaning but, well, he couldn't say no to his friends (and some of the said friends were pretty bad).
Back in the day, Bush was criticized a ton for his reaction when he was told. I'm glad he was able to talk about it. No one could hear what just happened and act calm and controlled, but he did.
Isnt that weird that george bush got the news on camera? And him losing 2.3 *Trillians* dollar just the day before was totally off the camera. Because how? How could the president who was reading children books would be that ever
And he’s still criticized for it, justifiably so. He did nothing because he knew it was happening. He knew he had to wait for the towers to fall and the other planes to hit.
I was in my 3rd grade classroom. Normal day until my teacher got word about the first plane from the principal. They wheeled a tv into the room and put the news on. While the adults were speculating if it was an attack or accident we all witnessed the second plane crash live as it unfolded. That tragic day is burned into my memory forever.
I was in third grade too, my teacher was in tears and said to everyone something terrible had happened to our country on that day. And I knew nothing would ever be the same again.
I was in my 4th grade class in OKC and I remember our teacher warning us our parents would probably begin to come pick us up. The OKC bombing was still fresh in parents' minds and there was a fear that other targets across the country would be hit (they were), and that maybe the city would be attacked again (obviously it wasn't). But that paranoia was there. Sure enough, I don't believe any students were in the building by lunch time. They may have even closed, I am not positive. Our teacher wouldn't tell us what was happening and our parents were crying when they picked us up. It was very surreal to be walked out to my moms car, her crying, other kids with their crying parents, and having no idea what was going on. Watching it unfold was horrible. My mom just told me that I was going to see some things and it wasn't a movie. Even as a kid you felt everything was about to change.
I had a teacher who quit his job as a police officer in New York City and came to live in Florida to teach after this attack. He was there during this terrorist attack and I think had to clear people out from the streets and see the people jumping from the towers and stuff. Scary. Traumatizing. Just heartbreaking. The event that changed the world forever.
His entire body language and attitude changed when he got told that. But he remained calm and no one really noticed and in doing so he kept the children from being startled/scared
You know what, to hear President Bush´s memories, as if I´d been brought back 20 yrs. RIP to all the victims, and condolences to the grieving families...
Okay, but to be fair...that Scary Movie bit where the President refuses to deal with the alien invasion until the book is finished still gets me to this day. He had to know what happened to the goat!
I was 11 years old when this took place and I remember it so vividly that it feels like yesterday. I didn't completely understand everything but it especially started to make sense when my gym teacher who served in the military was running in and out of the gym taking calls from her superiors trying to figure out what this meant for them. When it comes to Bush's reaction to the news, back then I knew a lot of people had issues with it but again I was so young I didn't understand why. Looking at this now 22 years later, I fully understand the predicament he was in and can appreciate and respect the way he handled things. He saw what was happening not only through the eyes of a President, but also the eyes of a dad who wanted to protect the peace and innocence of those children.
I was stationed in San Diego and got a call from my sister who lived in VT. The call woke me up and she said to turn on the TV and I did so right as the 2nd plane hit. By the time I got my uniform on and headed to my command, it was already on lockdown.

I was in an elevator when someone told me that a plane had crashed into the first tower. I remember saying they always have problems with that building. I sat down in the chair next to the patient and said “ we’re under attack “. The rest of the day the entire staff were glued to the television. We lived in Baltimore, and at one point we were told that a plane might be headed towards our world trade center building. So I left and drove home to my family trying to listen to news and angey at commercials, how stupid to hear them when theres a crisis of thia magnitude. I kept looking up out the window in case planes were coming down. I had a view of downtown Pittsburgh and thank God no planes were hitting buildings there but then thought... yet. At my parents house they said what are you doing here I had to tell then turn the TV on I dont know but planes are coming down. By then the pentagon was hit and somewhere in there the plane that came down just a couple hours drive from us. I still cry when I see footage of that day. I will never forget. 💔

I've got a lot of respect for how President Bush handled the situation at that exact moment, in front of all those little children. He stayed extremely calm and didn't panic, even when he got the shocking news.
I like how he parlayed the whole situation into invading Iraq and using up all of the Goodwill and sympathy that our country got from the 9/11 attacks. Bravo George! You were daddy's wittle favorite ❤
I've never seen horror actually dawn on someone quite like that before. Not fear, not anger, actual, genuine horror, knowing that the world just changed forever.
you can clearly see how he changes before and after he first heard it: before he was smiling, all happy and paying attention. then he started getting more and more nervous, he stopped smiling and paying attention, he was only paying attention to his assistants and everyone with him… yet, he handled it perfectly, the last thing he ever wanted was to scare all of those children.
Totally disagree. His reaction was NOT perfect. It’s hindsight, but he should have calmly told the kids he has a very important call to make and excuse himself. Or have one of the 10 assistants that were there do it! You are the president of the United States, get your ass up and go do something!! I think the dying ppl in NY were more important then being in that classroom at that moment

I commend him for keeping calm for the babies. I was 6 years old , same age as these kids when I found out and it was pretty traumatizing for our generation
All I can remember from that day, as a 5 years old myself in North Africa, is me standing in front of the Television, closely watching Al Jazeera trying to understand what on earth had just happened, and my family also, although being Muslims and completely uninterested in the US, just watching the footage in awe and horror, speechless and trying to explain to their best ability that a plane just crashed a big building in a big city.
I grew to despise many of the actions he did after the attacks, but I will always be one of those who will defend what he did in the moment. He knows he's in front of a room full of 7 year olds. If he jumps up and runs out of the room, it would be panic and terrifying to those little kids. How he handled that particular moment was the right way to do it.
What would be the chances Bush would be surrounded by school kids when our nation was being attacked. It’s like the perfect way to make a lame duck president look like a hero…
Absolutely. The fact that he kept it together, and put the kids watching him as a priority in that moment, is something deserving of respect. The aftermath like you said is a whole different story, but on the day of (and maybe in the following weeks- I don't remember the immediate aftermath since I was just shy of 7) he handled things extremely well.
He didn't need to "jump up and run out of the room." He could have calmly stood up, and said, "I'm sorry to cut things short, kids, but I have some important presidential business to attend to. Thank you for reading for me. That was very nice." And then calmly left the room to talk to his military advisors. No need for panic, just some action. He looked like a deer in headlights.
My mom was in hs when this happened. She saw it live in class. She told me of how terrible it was. My condolences to those who lost their lives in the attack and their families.
Just remember ..this is the same Goverment that said Oswald killed Kennedy by himself...Look up..The Project for the new American century { written before 9/11}to see what they were up to before 9/11
I saw this event play out in live time too in high school. I remember a kid walking by me rapping about world war 3 before walking into a horror show on tv in my next class. One of my classmates fainted when we saw the 2nd plane hit. I lived in Connecticut at the time and her dad worked in one of the towers. Some kids cried silent tears, others wailed. It was all very traumatic and I wasn’t even there. Just watching knowing an hour away this was taking place. I’m sure your parents feel as I do. It will haunt us always.
Same for me. I was 15 in 11th grade Math class and my friend and I watched the 2nd tower hit live on tv. We were immediately sent home. Letters came up from the front office telling us to go home, all schools on the East Coast have evacuated. As a 15yo dork I had no idea how serious this was until I watched the footage on every station, even cable
As so many others have said, I have tremendous respect for President Bush in this moment. He couldn't have been at a more inconvenient location or event to receive that news, and his calm, measured reaction will forever be remembered as the mark of a great leader. Say what you will about the rest of his administration, but his ability to handle himself and lead effectively in the most truly unprecedentedly horrifying time in our history is unmatched.
He sat there for 7 minutes doing nothing. All he had to do was excuse himself. It was pathetic, and that's not even taking into account that he would use 9/11 as an excuse to invade a country that had nothing to do with the attacks.
I wasn’t even a year old yet and my mom says she remembers that after the second plane hit people didn’t know what to do so everyone was sent home. She said she remembered slamming the gas home because she was so terrified and all she wanted to do was be hold me and be with me. Makes me tear up everytime.
Literally the entire world shut down that day! I lived in Atlanta, 4 years old. Restaurants, airports, schools.. everything was closed and everyone went home. The world was terrified and had no idea what was next! Edit: I should say America. I can’t speak on the rest of the world.

he knew what was going to happen, it’d been planned. Many other events like this have been planned too, they even released classified documents about planning a terrorist attack in the US which would’ve killed thousands, so that they could frame Cuba and go to war with them. I just don’t understand why they didn’t fight back the people that did it (Saudi Arabia). Iraq made zero sense. The Saudi govt are now known to have been funding al-Qaeda.
If you really believe that some foreign organization attacked the WTC, then look up "Operation Northwoods". It just shows you what the CIA and government is capable of.
I remember this day very clearly. I was in high school; sixteen years old. I stayed home from school that day because I didn’t feel well. I still have the entry in my old diary where I wrote about the events as they unfolded. Reading that entry back, I can sense the panic and fear I felt even in just my written words. I will never forget that day, and that diary entry is a vivid, painful reminder of how I felt as it was happening.
All I remember is waking up late to go to school and hearing my parents crying down stairs, mostlly my mom. That dayI had no idea whaat happened until a few years later
Almost too calm. I get that the leader of a country has to show calmness, but in situation like this it would of been more than perfectly okay to just say politely something like "Excuse me, but I've just received some news and unfortunately I have to be going now". Their country was under attack and he was worried about one classroom full of kids.. It's almost like he froze and didn't know what to do or there is always that other possibility.
@@theoathman8188 I think he knew that an attack was coming but maybe he didn't know when. Imo people should've been more vigilant after the 1993 bombings in The world trade center. I vividly remember watching the 2nd plane hit, I was 13 in my Social Studies class. The teacher had the news on when we walked into the class. Seeing that plane hit is an image I’ve never been able to forget. For weeks I had nightmares and had so many fears. My mom worked in a tall building (not in N.Y) but the thought of this scared me. I cried every day she went to work and begged her to stay home. My prayers go out to the families and friends who have loss someone in this horrendous attack. ❤️🙏🏽
When he said “i was watching a child read..” actual chills. I don’t think any other president could’ve handled that exact moment in time any better than he did.
I don't like Bush but I gotta respect him thats pretty distressing news to be told live in front of the media and he stayed calm and composed because he didn't want to alarm or scare the kids. He did the right thing. Can you imagine the pressure he was under to lead the county after an attack like that the world was in shock.
He caught a ton of shit from the late night shows and comedians etc for how he handled it but now looking g back he had almost eerie composure. I'm not a huge Dan of Bush and his policies but damn it If I can't help but want to have a beer and hot a joint with the man.
I was in New York City and watched 9/11 unfold on television, soon after we were let go from school due to some kind of emergency I could not understand. I had been playing basketball in the gym but everything became silent as we heard the roaring engines of fighter jets flying over our school that morning. I came home in disbelief. After watching the news, I looked out the window. I lived on the second floor of an apartment building in uptown Manhattan, but could clearly see the smoke rise from the World Trade Center towers from about 14 miles away. I swear I was inhaling dust and debris that morning; it felt like that never-ending smoke that emanated from the twin towers was hovering over us everywhere we went and it would continue to feel this way for years to come.
I was 12 years old in the 7th grade. I remember it all like it were yesterday. The younger generations are just never going to understand. They will never understand how incredible our country was at the turn of the century and how much of an impact this had on all of us.
Yep I remember watching the news in my home room class and despite not knowing what was really happening.. I had a feeling that moment would change everything.
You're so right America was riding super high leaving the 90s entering Y2K. It was the height of pop culture, entertainment, business was booming, and we were just entering the digital age. It felt like a great time to be an American. I was in 7th grade as well and I remember what the classrooms looked like, my teachers faces, and the collective feeling of disbelief, fear, and heartbreak for the victims and the families of the people on the planes and in the towers. I remember I had a 2001 New York State Quarter in my hand at the time and I clenched it tight as I cried seeing the major news networks fail to cut away in time as people were leaping in their business suits to their deaths from the 100th and higher floors above the crash points because they were trapped. I will never forget that day as long as I live.
We're gatekeeping tragedies now? Why can't we all agree this was a terrible tragedy and not compare'i felt sadder about it than you do'. Your grandparent never lectured you on how terrible WW2 was compared to modern day tragedies and that you would never understand it
as a president that had to have been hard for him to keep his composure and then on top of that the pressure that was put upon him during that time... I feel for him that must have been so hard and probably didn't know what to do right away
My dad is a local 94 Engineer going on 30 years now. He got stuck in the city overnight on 9/11, he was in a building that was still under construction then 383 Madison Ave which would become JP Morgan chases headquarters in 2006. But the building was covered in scaffolding all the sides were open above 39th story mark, he was there with 3 other engineers, a lot of welders and construction workers then everyone stopped what they were doing when they heard flight American 11 flying too low over midtown Manhattan. He said everyone just paused at the loud whistling sound coming from the engines. One of his friends in the Union worked in the sub cellar of the north tower, he clocked out at 8:30 that morning, and by the time he got home the plane hit the north tower
Say what you want about him and how the aftermath of this was handled, good or bad; but it was pretty gangster that he took this to the chin in front of all those little kids. I think most people can applaud that given what he was just told.

I will always remember my cousins words (British Army) as the realisation set in, he just very calmly spoke whilst staring at the screen, "someone just attacked our friends. This will not do." So calm, so stoic, he didn't even budge, he spoke for us all. An attack on America is an attack on Britain to many of us 🇬🇧🇺🇲
The fact that 9/11 is more important to us than the Guildford pub bombings, Canary Wharf or 7/7 attacks in London says a lot about our ‘special relationship’ with America. I think it has gone a bit too far personally.
I heard initial reports on my car radio while commuting to my west-coast Air National Guard duty station. Before I could finish a cup of coffee, my Squadron was ordered to implement in-garrison site-defense measures. We had no inkling of the extent of this attack. The ensuing years gave ample evidence that an alliance with the United Kingdom was a shrewd position.

I thank God that President George W. Bush was in office during this challenging time. I cannot imagine, had former Vice President Al Gore been in charge as the President during this time.

@@lojkas8924 shush. The media lies all the time, propaganda does exist. But 9/11 will never be a piece of media that the american government stirred up. They wouldn't do that. Not in the 2000s. Especially not to their biggest tourist city, and state. Putting it in a recession, just to increase spending on military to lose multiple wars and cause a great 20+ year long fall of the American Dream. Something that post 9/11, simply doesn't exist anymore. Or atleast not how it used to. I'm not an American. But it hasn't been the same since. It didn't heal back to the same. It’s crazy I remember getting ready for school and my parents were watching this. I stood glued to TV after the first plane hit, I get chills thinking of that morning.
People like to bash on George for his initial behaviour but I think he handled it very well, being in that particular spot he was in when he got the news delivered to him. Imagine him just bouncing off his seat, scaring a whole class of children just because of the horrific news he got. I mean, what could he have done during that short period of time more than cause more panic than necessary?
Teacher could’ve handled that. He’s the president. In every other situation we expect them to rush to help their people-to be there-to act. He was stunned and sat there for 7 minutes in a minutes-and-seconds situation. Even if i were to accept that he did the right thing during, his behavior afterwards is disqualifying: he and his cadre had the gall to drag lead the public on a leash to needless wars and inflamed and preyed on fear in this country for their own benefit and the benefit of their rich friends.
@@mirabeaux851 do u expect president to rush and die in tat attack area? Already everyone doing their job.. President s job is to just make decision in large scale.. He did the right thing.. Yes, I recall hearing the narrative, "when President Bush got the message about 9/11, he continued to read!" Well that completely ignores the context of the situation. He did the right thing there. The kids didn't even need to know at the time.
People don't bash him for behaviour, people bash him because he is a war criminal. 500 thousand children died in Iraq war, countless civilians died in drone strikes.
I have to be honest, I originally thought that Bush didn't respond properly. But over time I realized how he reacts is perfect. His ability to stay calm helped those kids probably more than I'm aware
Yeah, I guess "staying calm" is one way to describe being petrified. How did his reaction "help" those kids, and why would that even have been his priority? "Hey, kids, something's come up. Will you excuse me, please?" and a calm exit would have been fine. Instead, he sat there in a state of frozen indecision for SEVEN frickin' minutes!
No way dude, that was a horrible reaction in my opinion. It’s like he sat there bc he didn’t know what to do and I don’t blame him for not knowing BUT sitting there reading kids books while ppl have been blasted to smithereens and are burning, falling, etc. to death was not the reaction I would want the leader of the free world to have. I get it, it was HEAVY news to get but sitting there for an extra 7+ minutes was like an eternity.
This is fascinating to watch. It was very wise of him not to leave in a panic or a rush. Such a scene would have become very historical and put him in a bad light. His aides would have been gagging for him to go immediately, but he paced it very well, and just look at the expressions on his face! I doubt he heard a single word the child was saying after his chief came in.
People point fingers at this man for causing the attack but you can't fake this kind of reaction. Its the look of someone's heart dropping and the look of someone saying to himself "Oh shit, what do I do now." You can see millions of things go through his mind. He's fearful and already overwhelmed that the weight of the entire country was pushed on him. You can read people very well by their body language and eyes, and this is the most genuine reaction. He's scared shitless.
Exactly. I was on the fence but leaning towards "he did it" until I found this video and now I can honestly say I think he was just as shocked as everyone else. When you look at his face right after he gets the news, you don't see any glee or smugness. You don't see the face of a man whose grand plan just succeeded. You see the face of a man who is very rapidly coming to grips with the reality of his situation, and everything he says here in this video lines up with that perfectly
Or he could have been thinking about that briefing, he got that he didn't do s*** about it and sitting here looking like, oh, it blew up in my face period. you'll absolutely have no idea what he is thinking, and neither do I, but he is not innocent... He should have left the school immediately that makes absolutely no sense...

I’ll never ever forget that day. I was a senior in high school with plans of going to FSU for nursing school and I immediately drove to the army recruitment office and signed up. Me and my best friend went through boot camp together, got the same mos, and we both got deployed together. I was in the second fight for Fallujah, operation phantom fury. For those that don’t know it was the biggest loss of US lives in the entire war. I was in a squad of 5 and we went house by house by house in what now seems like a blur. One of these houses we came to, they were waiting for us. I was the breacher and my best friend was the lead going into this house. Immediately he was met by 2 ak47’s. He got shot 12 times but he managed to take them out before he succumbed to his injuries. I grew up with this kid, known him since I was 6 years old and at 21 years old I held him in my arms as he took his last breath. People used to call us twins because we looked so much alike and we were never separated. Memories from being 15 and getting drunk in the woods with our friends and throwing a box of 9mm into a bon fire and seeing who would stick around the longest. We were from Florida so we had no problem swimming in rivers with snakes and alligators. All the dumb things we did as kids and somehow we survived Florida lmao. But those times made us fearless, and it made us really good at what we did in the army until that day. Maybe we should have had more fear, have been more cautious entering that house, I’ll never forget 9/11 and I’ll never forget November 20th 2004
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. That moment changed my life too although not as profoundly as yours. I was also a senior in high school and I remember that day vividly. I remember the bombing of Fallujah in 2003. My husband (boyfriend at the time) and I were listening to the radio and the reporting of the start of the bombing. He turned to me and said I need to join the military. He signed up a month later. Didn't deploy until 2007 but I think about how 9/11 effected our lives. The long separations and the toll PTSD took on our marriage. Thankfully we have come out okay on the other side of it but I can't get thru Memorial day or 9/11 without thinking of the soldiers and police and firefighters we lost. It's astounding the ripple effect that event had on so many people. It irritates me that everyone was saying "never forget" but our country seems to have quickly forgotten the sacrifices so many people made on that day and the sacrifices that so many soldiers and their families made afterward. The lack of patriotism in today's society angers me.
I was a high school kid in China that time, I remember going to the bus stop in the morning seeing all the newspaper front pages at the kiosk feeling like WW3 had just begun.

I sat down in the chair next to the patient and said “ we’re under attack “. The rest of the day the entire staff were glued to the television. We lived in Baltimore, and at one point we were told that a plane might be headed towards our world trade center building. I in Pgh, PA was watching on TV, from my work office where we all gathered after the initial hit. When the second plane hit I froze cold knowing it was no accident. I had to throwup outside. It was hard to believe the first one was an accident anyways because it was too surreal, and perfectly centered in the building not just some highrise somewhere clipped. So we were in a real crisis of unknown extent. I thought there were so many planes in the air I was so terrified. I thought maybe most planes in the air at that time were going down, maybe all. 💔

Yes, I recall hearing the narrative, "when President Bush got the message about 9/11, he continued to read!" Well that completely ignores the context of the situation. He did the right thing there. The kids didn't even need to know at the time.
He could have politely said something like “I’m sorry but I need to go” no need to jump up dramatically
You give him WAY too much credit. It was a poor reaction.

He's scared shitless.
well, he did fake that reaction. You forget what a complete dumb ass W is.
