DAY 1 in NEWFOUNDLAND - My First Impressions

- In last week's episode, I flew to Newfoundland to begin a 10-week cross-Canada journey, and I got screeched in to get things started. But today, on day 2 of the journey, I spend my first 24 hours in St. John's and see what Newfoundland is REALLY like. Now, the only thing I missed out on is speaking to more locals, but guess what? I went to Newfoundland this summer and I fell in love with the province, the people, the local music and the food. The scenery is spectacular. It is the most beautiful place on earth and I traveled a lot.
I’m from Ontario, and I have lived my entire life there. I had always wanted to do my masters degree, so, in 2013, when I finally decided to apply for it, I decided on Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) because the masters program I wanted to do is well-known at MUN, one of my friends studied at MUN (in a different program than mine, but she kept raving about how great the school is), and because I had never been to Newfoundland, so I thought, why not apply to MUN. It was a “why not” moment when I decided on MUN. It was the absolutely best decision I ever made regarding my academic life and in my life in general.
I got to live in St. John’s for 2 years, and I experienced so many incredible things such as getting screeched in at Christian’s, seeing Great Big Sea perform on George Street, going to Cape Spear and Signal Hill many times, seeing all of the beautifully coloured houses, getting the best cod I had ever had at the Duke of Duckworth (this is a restaurant in a alley way, which is common in St. John’s), seeing puffins and whales on a boat tour, seeing the capelin rolling at Middle Cove, seeing what I would consider the most beautiful thing on earth, icebergs, and so many more things.
If you have never been to Newfoundland, it is a must see. The people are incredibly nice, and it is just an amazing province. Fogo Island is wonderful, Gander is great, Bay Bulls is awesome, and all in all, St. John’s just felt like home.

Bagel Cafe is one of the best places to eat here. Give The Celtic Hearth a shot too if you ever come back they're 24/7, I usually find myself there at like 2-3am lol

I used to work there, I love there food but they deep fry there bacon which makes it pretty greasy

I moved from Toronto to St. John's in 2013 and it was exactly what my tired bones needed. It's a different pace here.

This made me so homesick. Enjoy your time there! It’s such a beautiful province and so much to explore. I can’t wait for the day I can move back to The Rock! Vacationing is never enough these days. I miss home so much, even after 22 years. ❤️

Great video, glad to see NL getting recognized. Definitely recommend doing the hiking trails we have out by Corner Brook like man in the mountain or going further and seeing bottle cove
My first visit to Newfoundland was in Spring 2019. The food was amazing, the people were friendly, and the scenery was just amazing. I had an awesome experience, and I really want to return.
I am so proud to be from here, and to live here. It’s so nice watching other people come from away and enjoy the things I get to enjoy everyday but sometimes forget to appreciate 💗

I live about 5 min away from that beach, my house has a lovely view of the bay facing the sunsets from our patio. Whenever I travel to bigger cities it makes me aware of how remote we really are, but I love it here and traveling makes me appreciate it even more ❤

love that you started in my home town... and toutons are definitely one of my favorites.. definitely recommend making them again.. my family makes homemade bread and uses the leftover dough to make them and all you gotta do is fry them , I also recommend trying them with butter and brown sugar as a more sweeter flavour..
Even as a newfie im definitely missing out on a lot of experiences here haha

The large mountain bluff behind you is topsail bluff up there is my favourite spot in the world, so glad you guys made it out to topsail beach though its an awesome spot!
Spoken by a true Newfie! It is nice that we get these visitors but they would never imagine the true nature of Newfoundlanders and the Giormous hearts we wear on our sleeves and our willingness to go above and beyond for anyone at all... City folk ..well they are just a different breed, its every man for himself lol None the less it is nice to see outsiders showing an interest always!!!!

It’s unreal!!
Cape Spear is just the tip of the iceberg (so to speak). When you explore this province, and it's bigger than you think, it really will blow you away. My dad was from Random Island, and I moved back here 19 years ago. I will never tire of the beauty of this place. So, make that dream come true, you won't be disappointed. Just be sure to book at least twice the time you think you'll need. You'll know why when you get here.

Hey where u guys where at topsail beach just behind u there’s this big mountain at the top of that there is a really nice viewing place where u could probably get the best sunset experience In St. John’s. Sick video too keep it up.

Topsail beach is a 5 minute drive from my home and I’ve been blessed my entire life to have grown up and lived in such a beautiful place. Those mountains that you can see in this video overlooking topsail beach is called topsail bluff, the view from there on a summers evening is something else.
That's where I learned to skip rocks, topsail beach. Beautiful place, and my home town.

I literally was born in St. Johns and I live in St. Johns. I have been down by the old train many times.
I live in St. John's for about 6 months in total throughout the year! No better place to be b'y! It certainly is best kind!

Topsail Beach is right on my doorstep. Moved to Newfoundland from the UK eight years ago and love it here. If you have time, you should go to Topsail Bluff on the hill behind you for an even more amazing view of the sunset.

That liquor store and sobeys he visited at 6:15 is literally just down the road from where I used to live when I was living in St. John's, it was great too since that sobeys is 24 hrs and I would sometimes get off work at 12-1am, so I'd go there right after getting off work :P
