My wife was my friend for years. She seen me go through hard relationships. Always was there. I always thought she was attractive but I never thought of her in that way until one day I realized that I liked her and she felt the same way.

I think Steve missed the point...the break up being a blessing has nothing to do with what's in his head... Sounds like he needs to clear his mind completely of that EX before he starts trying to be with someone else. I was just like that after me and my ex broken up and I thought something was wrong with me because I could not not not say his name even if I were around my family and friends... his name always kept popping up to the point I kept calling my friends and family members his name... that's how you know the love that you had for that person was genuine.... but I so agree with you he's gonna need a whole HEAP of time... to get her out of his head first and foremost and then heal... like I did... you rarely hear stories about men getting cheated on... It's never been sexual, we've always just hung out. I don't have a relationship with my brother, and my bestie is the brother I picked for myself. He isn't too close to his siblings either (his brother and sister have addiction issues, so he wants no part of it Also they say that you have the family you were born into, and the family you pick for yourself).
So, in closing, yes. It is possible to have a best friend/friend with a member of the opposite sex.

I think its important to know the difference from friends and romantic friends with potential of becoming serious. I know a lot of guy friends that just don't cross that line and Im ok with that. I know a guy and a girl can start something new for simply being male and female. But in some cases its ok and normal not to want to date everybody who is just ok with being in your corner and nothing else. We need more people like that in our lives. When I was hurting from a broken relationship years ago, I will never forget this one guy in high school who held my hand sort of speak and kind of nurtured me back to my old self, wanting to have fun. And that was it. No relationship developed. When your hurting, we assume sleeping with somebody eases the pain, it just makes it worst. So if the two on Steve are just friends then they understand that. Sometime being just friends works a whole lot better than getting too deeply involved. You loose the great friendship when you do.
