I am Australian and we get paid Maternity leave and Paternity leave. My sister was given 10 months paid Maternity leave. Her baby was sick so she never went back to work. That was forty seven and a half years ago. Why isn’t America taking care of their people?
Ten months paid maternity leave? So if someone has a child every year for five years they get paid without having to work for five years?? How long is the Paternity leave? 10 months too? Who pays for it? The Employers? The Government?
@@kovacsfilip4513 if someone has, then yes. But have they really is the question. So if someone got paid for five years without work, I wonder how long they have actually worked to pay for it at a tax rate level. If every woman and every man (for paternity leave) gets that, I wonder who is working for it to pay for all of it.
I've been going though recession, depression, and so many things in life are uncertain. I've heard it from priests and preachers but when Steve said, tell it to God and let him tell you the path..... It suddenly clicked.... Ive been trying to force things my way and getting depressed that I can't walk the path I want to walk. He has a plan, but it's hard to see.... Trust and believe in him. And things will work out.
The fact that her situation happens all the time in the U.S. is sickening! I always had to fight for sick leave at Walmart. I was out for six months after working there for over two years and because I was never made full-time in the same system, I had to go through Lincoln Financial after calling Sedwick(Walmart’s leave ppl) a few times! It was always an uphill battle with them.
Yes retail stores love to nickle and dime you to death. I have a friend that use to work at walmart she said they are something else. A billion dollar company tho.
In USA, I used student loans to get thru one maternity leave by taking college classes during that time and another I had over the summer while being a teacher and returned to work when he was 2 weeks old. So happy my last was born overseas where I was able to take proper paid maternity leave and then stay home with him during covid.
My job did the exact same thing to me when I told them that I was pregnant. They told me that I didn’t have short term disability and would be terminated. My job prior called me while I was in the hospital after having an emergency c section at 31 weeks, to tell me either I come to work the following day or be terminated. My absence was considered unexcused since i didn’t request PTO or vacation at least 2 weeks prior.
I firmly believe that we need to implement a sick leave as well as maternity & paternity leave programs for all workers in this country. I personally feel that every time worker in this country regardless of their job should be guaranteed at least 2 weeks of sick leave & 2 weeks vacation per year. In addition to guaranteed sick leave, we also need to allow both mothers & fathers who just had a baby to be guaranteed time off with pay as well, so that way businesses can ensure that their employees at all levels can come into work feeling their best & contributing their best physically and mentally everyday. Finally, I firmly believe that "Working Poor" should not be a thing! If you work full time every week of the year, you shouldn't be living at or below the poverty line in this country! Hence why I feel there should be a Universal Basic Income for every American citizen above the age of 16 based on what the poverty level is so that way no one who works full time should have to financially struggle to get by.
Hahaha you funny. You don't need a sick leave. You just need go work suck or not. I do and I work 15 hr days. I'm in charge of a dairy farm. Can't miss work.
I urge you to go into politics. Your country needs forward thinking people like you to shake the system up and turn into something that actually works for the average Joe. Your ideas are worth more than simply being shared on social platforms. Take those ideas and make them a reality!
Australian here. I get 5 weeks paid annual leave a year. And because I’ve been working for the company longer than 10 years I get an extra week long service leave. So all up 6 weeks paid vacation leave annually. I also get 10 days paid sick leave annually. The company also has decided to give us an additional 10 days paid pandemic leave if you get Covid.
@@NessyPerth person from Ireland here. We typically get 25+ vacation days. The 14 days vacation you mentioned will still shock so many people foreign to the U.S. Especially those in Europe 😭.
I'm so glad this lady is exposing that company where she works at because it's bad enough for her boss to be rude and disrespectful trying to tell her she can't have children but his wife is going along with it and trying to make up a lie like they didn't say it
How stupid could this employer be after 1. Giving her crap about getting married, 2. Telling her she can’t have a baby.. then getting aired out on national television. Then the bosses wife makes a comment saying are you sure you’re not pregnant now because you’re very hormonal?? Wtf!! I hope they did sue and get that company for millions
First: he's not telling her that she "can't" have a baby, he's telling her that these are her options as far as the company policy goes (which don't include denying her having a baby). Just that "you can do x or y, but not z" as far as taking time off. that's it. There are NO Rights being denied. Second: this has nothing to do with her desire to have a baby, it's solely based on the logistical functioning of the company there are MANY laws that apply to large companies but not small companies, This is mainly due to the need of the company to be able to continue functioning if the employee is out for a long period of time. If an employee is going to be missing and it impacts the functioning of the company significantly, then they are allowed to either limit how long that employee is gone (with in the limits of the law and company policy) OR they are allowed to replace that employee. Simple as that. JUST LIKE she has the right to decide to not work for that company anymore if her circumstances change and she doesn't feel that working for that company benefits her anymore... Now, some small companies are able to work around an employee being missing for long periods, and that's great. But some companies can't, and that's why they are allowed to opt out of things like maternity leave. Third: she is always free to not work for that company at her choosing, she is not a slave of the company and they have no say in her choice to continue working there... If she feels that she would like for another company that has the benefits that she desires, then she should apply to that company... Simple (and I have done this several times in my life). Forth: Telling women to sue a company for things that are legal for them to do will only 1. get her fired, 2. cost her legal fees AND possibly punitive fines when the company wins, 3. falsely encourage other people to try and go down this same path and end up in the same situation (losing money they probably don't have) without understanding that what they're trying to do is futile and won't work out for them either. Fifth: IF you don't agree with the laws as they are written, then work to have them changed, DON'T encourage people to fight against something that is already legal. Sixth: trying to force companies (especially small companies) to take on things (laws or policies) that significantly apply to one sex will actually cause them to hire LESS people of that sex in order to lessen the impact to that company due to those laws or policies. Example, a small company has 35 employees. 6 women quit or take 6 months leave in order to start families. Later, the company will try and hire men instead of women to fill those positions the next time those positions are vacant. Even though it seems 'sexist' for this to happen, in reality it's about logistics. The needs of the company will come first to those that make the decisions about the wellbeing of the company. Seventh: DON'T try to compare the U.S. laws to those that are socialists or semi-socialists countries. Their leave is paid for through the government from taxpayers' money. IF they company is paying the employee for that time off, the company is being reimbursed from the government for what they are paying the employee. Thus, the employee is actually paying for their time off with their taxes.
The job I had back when I was pregnant with my first child, I had planned to use up a bunch of vacation and sick time where I could take off nearly a month before he was due. Shortly before i was due to go on leave I get informed that a coworker wanted to take a week of vacation time before I go on leave and that I was to cover her duties on top of mine that week - I was working as a housekeeper at an inpatient medical facility. This was challenging work covering my own work while several months pregnant - let alone double the work. Though I did what I could, needless to say, I had several complaints from staff that week that things were not done to their liking. Also, the original idea to have the extra weeks before giving birth to get last minute things ready for the baby didn't go as planned - he ended up arriving nearly three weeks early. I wonder if the additional stress from that last week working contributed to that.
It's not a lawsuit, it's a human rights violation that they have legal right to. I had 4 weeks unpaid, hr basically told me without telling me that if I didn't return after maternity leave I'd be fired. I quit within 3 weeks of being back.
I wish her the best. She is not the first woman to have gone through this and probably won't be the last. I myself was fired the day before I had my son, because the company I worked for at the time didn't give maternity leave to seasonal employees. And the human resources people said there was nothing they could do, and to go find another job, if my family needed the money so much, and I was wanting to still work. If the businesses out there think they can get away with these insane things to employees, they keep doing it. But it is the employees who suffer.
I just wanted to say I don’t know what you might be going through Or what situation you’re in right now but I no god is there for you and he loves you God bless everyone who came across.🇧🇸❤️ ~Marcia~
I worked 4.5 hours while in labor. Had a c section and went back to work 3 weeks 6 days later. Unpaid. Leave. I support my family. No other options. US needs to protect women's right to work and take maternity leave
I was pushed out the door after getting pregnant at an nationwide large company. They would write me up for the same things everyone else was doing, ( that was allowed) giving me higher quotas than others, even told me I couldn't wear maternity clothes because they didn't have a company logo on it. I had to hr approval to wear materiny clothes. They would write me up for Bogus stuff and had enough 2 weeks before I was due to let me go. It was the worst experience of my life. So when you think you are saving that 15%, this is how the employees behinds the scenes are taking the hit, just saying.
@@Asidebar i consulted with a few and all agreed I had a case and I was in the right. However, they were all very honest that it would take years of fighting to get anywhere due to how large the company was and their history of the issue and having very good/ sleezy attorneys. One said to me " you have a good case, I will fight it , but I want to know how long you want are willing to re live this. Its estimated time line was 5 years for us to get resolution. It was my first baby , I didn't want to relive that in court over and over the next 5 years. I decided to walk away. It was more important for me to focus on becoming a good mother and a sain mother. I knew I could not emotional handle that path
Hilarious and pathetic that the u.s. doesn't have maternity leave. One year here that can be divided between both parents for both natural and adoptive parents.
I’ve worked for a company like the boss, when your baby is sick and you’ve been up all night, and you need to stay home with your baby. Or so many life situations. The boss says no, you have to come in.. Thank GOD, and go to a new employment even if it’s less money. Your personal stress, health and family will be Thankful. 10 years later I still am. 🙏❤️🙏 So many things more important than that job!
In other countries, they give you 2.5 years maternity leave. This boss is not a leader, a leader is someone who wants you to excel and be successful in work and personal life.
That would illegal in uk. Company would be taken to court. Maternity leave in uk is given after I think 32 weeks of work. You get 6 months paid leave. Upto a year off and still walk back into a job! You go on leave 4 weeks before birth. God bless Steve!
I had a bad pregnancy and the Maternal Fetal doctor said that a person standing in straight position with an arm at each side and closed fists, their fists should reach to mid thigh. One day while watching him on TV, I randomly noticed that Steve Harvey has extremely short arms 🙂
The USA sounds awful. I get 4-6 weeks off for general leave every year. I'll get at least 12 weeks full time paid maternity leave, but I'll be able to leave work to have a baby (biological or adopted) for a year and walk back into that same job because they're obliged to keep it available for me.
People educate yourself on labor laws, the amount of employees does matter, this will also depend on the state you work in. You have fmla at federal level for 50 ee ir more and AdA which covers 15 ee or more in Nevada - If the company is an state where there is no specific state laws, the they have to adhere to the federal level and under AdA is a must to rp use reasonable accommodation for the birth of a child, to allow the woman to go out 6 to 8 weeks depending on when the Dr. Releases her from the child birth disability. And even if the state doesn’t have enough employees I always advise clients to allow the woman to be out for the period of the disability. Please note that STd benefits is something different employees get confuse, unless the state mandates companies to provide it there is not requirement to offer supplemental short term disability this is a benefit that will replace income while on leave this is not a protection of your job. Again the laws will depend on the state.

So I announced my pregnancy to my boss late November early December I believe prior to knowing I sat down with my boss and asked for a raise she said yes and I never saw the raise anyways the “office manager” which was her son told me he’ll let me know what days he will need me. This was in January. They never texted called, emailed but just ghosted me. I waited nothing, mind you I was already 4 months pregnant. So I just came one day to drop the uniform and that was it. It was sad I was the only employee that lasted almost a year
Yeah I had to go on short term disability for two weeks before getting my pre term maternity leave and it was hell trying to get it since I was off work with no pay for a few weeks prior of being approved
Honestly have heard that quiet often. Not with me but when i interviewed for jobs i was asked if i had kids and if yes that is not possible to work here. They dont take people with kids bc if the kid were to fall sick or an emergency would occur. Plus he'd fear that mothers would have to go home a certain time (to pick up the child etc) and not able to stay longer(all shift work jobs). Never took one of them jobs but kind of happily surprised that others find that weird, too. Saw that soooooo often😅
@@msjoy2005 you are correct as far as fmla goes. But the law is you have to let someone have 6 weeks off for a vaginal birth and 8 for c section. Regardless of number of emplopyess. Unfortunately if you go a day over those times in anyway you are no longer protected by the law.
Steve TV: With regards to the young lady being told by her employer that if she had a baby she would be fired is against the law. It is a form of discrimination. This law or something similar to it is nothing new in NYS. However, if it is in writing that she cannot have a baby, while employed at her place of business and she signed some type of contract or policy relating thereto, she must adhere to it. I would suggest that she look into this matter further, legally, as there is free legal service (consultation) available pertaining to this subject matter.
I think the USA is one of the worst places to have a child. Almost all other jurisdictions give maternity leave, irrespective of the number of employees.
Norway: In Norway, a pregnant employee is entitled to a leave of absence for up to 12 weeks during her pregnancy. After childbirth, the mother takes a leave of absence for the first 6 weeks of the post-birth period unless she produces a medical certificate stating that it is preferable that she resume work. The parental benefit period lasts 49 weeks (15 weeks are reserved for each parent) with 100% wage coverage or 59 weeks (19 weeks are reserved for each parent) with 80% wage coverage. The parental benefit is calculated in the same way as sickness benefits. The maximum benefit is equivalent to 6 times the National Insurance Basic Amount annually, regardless of whether the parents’ income is higher. Leave rights related to having a child mean that parents, together, are entitled to take leave until the child attains 3 years of age. The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Service (NAV) pays the first year. Even though there is no bonus system, Norwegian fathers are known to use up 40% of parental leave so that they can spend time with their children before going back to work.
It’s crazy how it works in the US in Germany you are not even allowed to fire a pregnant lady or your company will pay a high fine. Plus you get maternity leave 6 weeks prior birth and 8 weeks after and then parental leave which can be up to 2 years paid and another unpaid but you keep your position and they have to give you your job back. I don’t know how women in the US have children so 😢
In Norway we women get 12 months maternaty leave with 80% pay. 10 months with 100 % pay. The father can share some of it with you. Many combinations, but so terrible difficult for mothers in the States.
What they really need to discuss is based on what she also previously mentioned about her boss trying to talk her out of getting married is the fact that he most likely has an infatuation with her. The boss’ wife needs to be more concerned with that than sticking up for him cause he most certainly lied about his statement to her. Ugh. I hope everything works out for her.
I got friends that run their own company, and they got maternity leave. Their companies are small but still have it. Ranges from 4 months to year and an half
I worked for a small independent company that had a small amount of employees so that meant that they didn't have to offer insurance. So we had to buy our own insurance from the Marketplace. I got assistance through the Marketplace because my income was low enough, but it would have been great if the employer chose to provide insurance for us. I was glad to have a steady full time job though and have enough money to pay for my insurance.
He did not tell her she can't have a baby... In fact he tried to help her by planning out 3 weeks... All he said was she'll be let go if she takes longer than that... Not one part of what the employer said was wrong here. It's not a law suit... Not even close. It's a pretty big jump from "you can't work here" to "you can't have a baby" ...
Yes, exactly! Such a creep, even having an issue with her marriage. She said she was only 19 when she started working for him. I've no doubt she was the best employee that loser has ever had, and he was gaslighting and controlling to keep it that way. Luckily this young lady knows her worth and as she matured realized the work situation was really off. Very proud of her!
I've been told all kinds of things over the last three decades from employers which I knew were illegal to be saying to me. There's not enough space here to list them all. PA & KY.
People…. Come to Canada! 18 months of paid maternity and you can split it with your spouse. It’s not full pay but a lot of corporate companies will top it off.
that's bollshit. this is a law suit. by law a woman at least needs 8 weeks thats nothing but its something seeing how it over a year for a woman heal 100% beacuse of mental heath issues too
In India weather you are working with government or private you have 26 wks maternity paid leave you can divide it before and after pregnancy as you wish and you can take extra days leave if any complications or problem occurs but it would be without payment. And no one can remove you from job. This is the rights given to Indian women. I feel it's really advanced and thought full right for all pregnant and new mom in my country.

Ten months paid maternity leave? So if someone has a child every year for five years they get paid without having to work for five years??
How long is the Paternity leave? 10 months too?
Who pays for it? The Employers? The Government?

The fact that her situation happens all the time in the U.S. is sickening! I always had to fight for sick leave at Walmart. I was out for six months after working there for over two years and because I was never made full-time in the same system, I had to go through Lincoln Financial after calling Sedwick(Walmart’s leave ppl) a few times! It was always an uphill battle with them.
Wal -Mart is down right shady. They could have good employees but choose instead to nickel and dime them

In USA, I used student loans to get thru one maternity leave by taking college classes during that time and another I had over the summer while being a teacher and returned to work when he was 2 weeks old. So happy my last was born overseas where I was able to take proper paid maternity leave and then stay home with him during covid.
What country did you birth your last child in?
My employer just changed their policy to 7 weeks maternity full pay and 4 weeks PTO I’m sooo grateful

Good! That might be a blessing in a disguise sounds like some bs there are other jobs out there willing to give her everything she asks for
First: he's not telling her that she "can't" have a baby, he's telling her that these are her options as far as the company policy goes (which don't include denying her having a baby).
It's federally illegal for your boss to tell you if you get pregnant you'll get fired. It's discrimination

That was to much stress on your body.
Absolutely it did! That's crazy...
And sometimes I cry, but I hold my tears, and I love your videos

I wish Steve wouldn’t have given her the funds to cover 3 months of expenses

The tide has turned since 1988. Thank goodness. I’m sorry that you went through that and even in 1988 you shouldn’t have.
What an honest & besutiful woman employee
Again the laws will depend on the state.
your WRONG. You need to educate YOURSELF!
In Japan you get to have a paid maternity leave for 1 year, can extend it to 2 years if you cant find a day care center

Only 4 weeks maternity leave in the US? In the UK we can get up to 12 months, 9 of which are paid.
In Connecticut it’s “ At Will employment “ so an employer can fire you at anytime for NO reason at all
Legally you have to give her off for 6 to 8 weeks, however there is no law saying you have to be paid for it in the US
That’s not the case depending on the size of the company. Under 50 employees aren’t able to get FMLA in Michigan at least

So sad 😞 canada I'd totally different... my heart goes out to her 💔
I think the USA is one of the worst places to have a child.
In Canada that would be 100% illegal as far as I know…. My question is why was she still working for this employer…
