  • Debbie Cole discusses the floating technique for acrylic painting with Decoart Americana Acrylic paints which is used to shade or highlight in acrylics. She goes into detail as to which brushes to use while painting and how to use them to shade or highlight.

Debbie: I appreciate your take on floating technique.. I am a seasoned painted that gave it up 2 years ago and am now taking it up again. I am comfortable with angle shaders and get the best result from them. I use what I am used to but like the way you use the flat shaders. Thank you for sharing.

I always want my students to use what they are used to... angles put you at a disadvantage, but many painters have learned how to tip their hand to get the correct float.

Subscribe, give you a thumbs up!! Debbie, you do not know how glad I am to have "found" you. I have many of your books and articles from decorative painting magazines. I had difficulty trying to follow the written instructions and making it work out like described, now seeing you demonstrate floating, it is so helpful. I have the brushes too. Do you still use Delta acrylic paints? I will watch your videos and come back for more.

Hi. I’ve been painting for almost 2 years and am basically self taught. Would you mind letting me know what floating medium you use and how many drops to water ratio. It seems to me that it’s a subject that’s glossed over and not really discussed in length by anyone. Also, I noted that you often dab the watervendvofvyourvbrushnon paper towel after loading and before painting. Is that because the brush is too wet or you want to guarantee that the end is clear of paint. Lastly, why would you not recommend using glazing medium on the surface you’re painting on andvusevitvonly for Practice? Is it because it would be harder to remove if it’s incorrect? As a beginner, I like the idea if I have to do a second float, the glazing medium would prevent the first float from wiping off. I also wNted to say I love your videos and they are a real treat. You explain things very well and make everything look so easy! If only that were the case for me.

Folk Art has a floating medium that works wonderful when added to water.
