This is the most beautiful truck and model on the planet. If only I still had mine. I think I would absolutely still play with it. No shelf Queen, Well probably most of the time it would be a shelf queen. LoL. Thank you for the upload even though this video is old.. lol..
I love these, and finally after first seeing it on the back of 'Radio Control Models and Electronics' (RCME, a UK RC magazine) in 1981 I got one in 2020.. However its not the first scale RC car by a long long way. The first Tamiya Scale RC would be the Porsche 911 of 1976, the first off road Tamiya Scale RC was the XR311 (1977), by the time of the Hi-Lux there was a whole range including F1 cars. It is almost certainly the first of what we would now call 'Rock Crawlers' I also have an original XR311, Sand Scorcher (I have had this since Christmas 1981! now fully restored). My HiLux is fully original with working speed controller (they are actually very easy to repair, it's all discreet components, mine had some dry joints on the FETs) , the last detail to be acquired is the 4000mAH 6v battery (So I can use it to re case the modern battery it now runs with)
Thank you very much for your feedback! You have a great collection! Of course, it's not the first scale RC car, but in my opinion the first in the subcategory "scaler". This means the design of a RC car is like a real off-road car, like a Hilux, Landrover or Jeep. And in this category the Toyota Hilux 4x4 from Tamiya was the first one, in my opinion.
pinkze he say " just watched a load of RC videos on here but looks like I saved the best till last ! This is a very good tribute to Tamiya as always and a joy to watch , so thank you my You Tube friend Matteo ! "
very good explaning of the 3 gear box, costed 600 DM back in the early 80ies, worth now 800 USD and more. Whou could have imagined that? A beauty to keep but not to attach too much to material things, not like me :-) My Hilux will be filmed in some years, I'll start with the light weight rc cars to film and then to sell like the Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin...thx for uploading your excellent explanation movie paired with action. Salute
I used to own one like this, but I sold it around 1985 to fund a methanol engine car. I recall the suspension was "a bit" bouncy with the leaf springs and not very good dampers, but the gearbox and drivetrain were great. Also the looks were unmatched for a decade or more.
Awesome look back, Matteo! I was a Junior in High School when this was released..... I am OLD! That is amazing, the technology back then. Locking Hubs and shift on the fly? 😲 Only a very few have that today!! And NOTHING has locking hubs! Incredible piece of History, great video, and a cool soundtrack! Murph

Love this truck. I bought it off eBay for $600. It was missing some stuff but I got it up to 95% complete. 2nd doesn't quite work but that deist matter to me. It's a great car for what it is and I feel that was $600 well spent.
Fascinava-me o ar autentico desta pick-up.
That os awesome 1981 is the year i was born so its the same age as me 33 and man thats truly remarkable for back then real lockers on the front oh man i have to have a chassis like that for a build
I just love your videos. I am a serious RC hobbyist and love the scale appearance of your videos. Also you have clear voice work when you do build videos.... Great Work!
What a great video! I love the combination of studio pieces and beautifully shot outdoor footage - there are some wonderfully period-perfect shots here! The look of the thing is so convincingly "Super 8" cine... With nearly 50% of viewers so far having clicked "like" I´m clearly not alone in thinking that this video is a masterpiece of the amateur rc videomaker´s art : )
Yes, I think Tamiya is falling in love with hard suspension! :-) Normally I would modify the suspension, but this model we would show in the original condition! Thanks for your comment!
Hi , really good video, I never have RC when I was kid, now after saw several of your video, which recomended for 1st time pick, bruiser, tundra or hilux, considering price point and assemby/maintenance difficulties, also the aftermarket spareparts. Thank you!
Running and under the shell vid all in one cheers buddy loved it didnt realise it had those free wheeling front hubs. A very nice example your using buddy
Ahh..super!
Ok so how did he ...or she, keep the tires from dry rotting? I mean, even a tire I keep in a sealed bag gets white powder looking signs of drying up. But these original tires are remarkable. Outstanding work whatever they did. Is there any coating I can apply? Like motor oil or Armor-all maybe?
Cooles Video Matteo!

Damn! I have this model inherited from my grandfather, complete with a vintage wooden futaba controller. sadly the front axle was broken and I cant find the parts anywhere :(
Marc Mercer Thank you! But they are really hard to get. Maybe you can find one on ebay or so, but to find one in good condition is not easy and very expensive!
Beautiful car, but extreme hard suspension with almost no articulation, same as the Bruiser and the later F-350 with leaf springs. Stock setup is unacceptable for this type of car.
Unsurprisingly like all tech from the 80s only high quality materials were used as a standard. The same reason Id never buy a modern day amp. Plastic garbage. Same goes for cars but if you manage to find one in a perfect shape it costs a ton.
And thank you for all your videos. This is really one of the best RC channels on ytube and one of the reasons I finally got into the hobby after many years of hesitation.
Just bought one today, together with a Hilux Mountaineer... Going to restore it to perfection. 😁👍🏻
Really awesome how this truck is still better than a standard scx10 nowadays!
Thanks, but we have to say, on the trails a modern car like a SCX10 is better, but on this oldies are something magic...
Incredible design and attention to detail for that time. Tamiya was just so groundbreaking.
Yes, it was. Sad the times have changed... 😔
This is the most beautiful truck and model on the planet. If only I still had mine. I think I would absolutely still play with it. No shelf Queen, Well probably most of the time it would be a shelf queen. LoL.

You built this Truck Exactly just like the 1980’s Tamiya commercial.
Yes, but it's not mine. A friend had restored and build it. 👍😊
It's great to see some videos of the tube dedicated to vintage tamiya, my first was the bearhawk.
Cool! Thanks for your feedback! 😊👍

perfektes Video! Faszinierende Technik an einem über 30 Jahre alten Tamiya Hilux! Super gemacht!

Hi Matteo, how is the build quality of the first gen tamiya's in comparison with the new cars? Are they still made in Japan? Thanks, Eduard.
The quality is still excellent, same as ever. But not everything is made in Japan. They have a factory in the Philippines also.
Wow Matteo! You did a perfect job filming the legend. I've always wanted one. Do you think Tamiya will ever rerelease this RC? Thanks sharing dude!!! =]
