- I hope new users find this useful. Ive selected 13 controllers to connect to the Steam Deck.
The official joycons have just had an updated firmware patch but only in beta stage at the moment and will hopefully be added to a stable release soon.
What controller do you recommend?
I still go for the DualShock as I love the pad/mouse, but if not that, then I find the Pro controller very comfy, if a little worn out being a few years old now.

I really wanna see steam re-release the steam controller but set up based on the steam deck controls and Bluetooth connecting improved, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack

There is a beta FW update recently that added much better support for joycons and NES controllers. Once it is out of beta and stable I will be able to check it better and hope for them to work as a pair! Hop you find the video useful.
does the gyro work with the joycons? could you theoretically play switch sports or just dance on an emulator and use the motion gyro to play?

There is an updated beta firmware that adds support to official joycons. I haven’t tried it yet but it may do exactly that with them.
Thanks for showing this. I have that PowerA controller I will test out (I can tell it will be laggy af lmao) but I might get an 8bitdo Pro 2 to use instead for docked play when I get dock.

I use the Steam Controller for all of my Steam games.
Though, I may consider using others when emulating older titles for that nostalic factor. We'll see, but I really like the Steam Controller with the Steam Deck.

The 8bitdo pro2 also works in "S" mode ( switch mode ). It connects as a pro controller with support for gyro.
No analog trigger though.
Could you address any lag issues with controllers? My PS4 controller has a noticeable lag when paired with the deck.
I don’t know why but if you use a Nintendo switch pro controller or even aftermarket Nintendo switch controllers to switch mode, they feel sluggish, but other controllers I’ve tried feels fine.
Good example is when I use the 8bitdo pro 2 if you have it in windows and android mode it’s feels nice, but when I put it in switch mode, it doesn’t feel good.
But I still love that I can connect my switch pro, pdp afterglow, ps4, ps5, Xbox elite, 8bitdo pro 2 controllers like it’s native.
Can’t wait to buy the new 8bitdo Bluetooth/ 2.4ghz controller with Hall effects. I’ll be plugging the 2.4ghz to my dock and put it in Bluetooth mode when it’s not docked.
You could use joycons to point to screen like a mouse? It will be great for rails lightgun games

8bitdo pro 2 works, except for the back paddle buttons on the back. They aren't showing as buttons and the controller is identified as an xbox controller.

I haven’t tried that controller yet.
The steam controller connects via bluetooth, Press the B button at same time as you press the big button, hold till it beeps, its then in bluetooth mode and can be recognised.
What is the maximum number of controllers you can connect via bluetooth?
how do you get the ps2 controller working via speedlink? i saw someone connecting the ps1 controller
Is it possible to get the Stadia controller working on it? A friend gave me a Stadia system and I want to get some use out of it. Also, is the Stadia Controller any good?
I think eta prime has a video on using these as a standalone bluetooth controller. Apparently the functionality is there, as it can currently be used as a wireless controller with stadia, but outside of that it looks like Google hasn't made any updates for it to be used outside of Stadia itself. I think you can currently use the controller right now via cable, but wirelessly you're going to have to wait for Google to pass a firmware for this use case. They might someday, but they also might not. Just keep your eyes open for any news from Google concerning their controller. But as it stands right now, your best option is connection via cable or another controller, unfortunately.
@@ThePaulKM thanks for the reply. I don’t see Google passing a firmware update since stadia is going out but maybe they will or they’ll allow others to do so. A boy can dream. I’ll definitely try it with a cable and see how it feels.
@@OldKaz Definitely. Especially if that's your favorite controller, then putting up with some of the compromises may be worth it.
Bought the Nyx joycons after watching your video. They work as a pair in the Steam Deck Menu, but they show up as seperate pro controllers when entering a game which makes it impossible to use together. Do you have a fix for this? Thanks!
May be worth trying the beta firmware., Improves stability for joycons.

Are there any w/ back buttons that can be arbitrarily mapped to keyboard inputs like the deck's native back buttons?
Not that I know of at this stage, Best you’ll get is back paddles that can be assigned to a face button.

If you connect the dualsense/dualshock to other devices, then decided to use it again on ps4/ps5, do you have to wired connect it to sync it again to the console?
Yes, you’ll need to “repair” using a cable.
So does the normal xbox one controller stay paired via Bluetooth? Or does you have to keep it plugged in the whole time?
My joycons automatically connect as one controller instead of two how do I change that

Can you please do a video about how to connect a 1st gen elite controller. I don’t know why it’s not showing up on my steam deck it’s frustrating only seeing every other controller connecting except for the gen 1 elite controller.

I cant get my binbok (you called them nixi) joycons to work. They pair and will vibrate whenever something is being downloaded but thats it. Also they light up when paired.

@@spiralings not only did I not figure it out I have no idea what I meant by "vibrating when something downloads"
Also the updater tool broke the + & - buttons so I have to map them to the zl or zr buttons in the Switch menu and use that has + & -. If you map zl and zr to the grip buttons then you can use that as + & - so it's not the end of the world but still sucks.
I'm using a Dualsense controller on my Steamdeck, but most of the time I connect it via Bluetooth my SD disconnects itself from the Wifi network, any ideas on how to solve that?

Both the wired and wireless 360 controllers don't work on my steam deck.

got a nyxi hyperion pro and it doesn't work at all. it pairs, but i can't control anything with it. it doesnt even show up as a controller
I recently got some Hyperion Pros, I’ll try and test today and see what I come up with.
I have same issue. It even wakes up the deck when I push the button. But doesn’t register as a controller

I can pair my XBox One controller, but it does not work with any games. Same for my 8Bitdo.
Just make sure you have the controller selected in the controller settings when pressing the steam button in game.

Yeah. There’s a firmware incoming that gives it official support though. No idea when it’s going to be a stable release, hopefully not long.
