Fantastic video! Remarkable editing effort, soundtrack, rhythm, audio quality, incredible! And I also find myself using and wanting prime lenses a lot more. Each of us understands what we like about the workflow, this is the most important thing. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent upload. I have some lenses that I hardly used but love too. EF135L, absolutely love it, and when I do use it, blows my socks off!… EF35 1.4L, again a magic lens with beautiful rendering, and Sigma EF70-200 USM… I seem to have moved in the opposite direction to you, and will use my 24-70f4L, or 24-105f4L depending on size of the event. and my trusty 85mm 1.8… Having said all of that, I will never sell the aforementioned lenses, because when I do get round to using them a few times a year, they absolutely knock the ball out the park. Regarding renting lenses, the amount of time you have to use it to know whether or not it fits with your workflow to the extent that you are ready to buy it, means you will lose a lot of money. Better to buy and then sell, as L-lenses keep their price very well. Just a thought.… 🙏🏿
Thank you so much for your comment. I am actually working on a video about renting gear. I have to get better at selling old gear. You make a good point.
My closet glass...16-35L v3 24-105L EF ....RF 35 f1.8...all my Meike FF Cine Primes all 7 (but they are PL and for my Gemini which also is not being used :( ) great video subbed
How did you get footage of my closet?! Dang that is surreal. I wanted the 85 so bad but the more I looked into it the more I realized it wouldn't work for what I needed. The autofocus would be miserable for what I do. The 24-70 is the same story that you spoke about. So much of what I photograph is fast moving low light so prime lenses are the ticket.
Woke up to wonderful gem! I am just getting ready you change my lineup and your post is such a godsend! I hope you post more on RUclips! I will also check out your instagram page.
Good insights! Don't worry, you're not insulting anyone by not using those legendary lenses; quality images matter more than image quality anyway (as you noted with the 100 mm macro lol). I use the RF 100 L macro, which actually focuses really quickly! Amazing for small invertebrates and fine details on flowers. The spherical aberration control can be used to soften the details, helping hide facial imperfections. Maybe give that one a shot...like you said, rent it! It's fantastic. Anyway, great video! Subscribed!
Yup. I get it. But my favorites are the RF 15-35, 24-70. I'm way more video and primes can put you in a corner. The image is better but you can get jammed up in tight spaces. I just started with the 15-35 again. It's practical.
I'm shooting a promo video on my R5c and the 15-35 of a fence company working in my yard all day. It's gonna be killer. Nice when your house is the location... so far the images are smokin.@@photographybydaniellee
You've just saved me. One of those lenses I've just returned and another one I was thinking about. I have a 40mm and may get a 20 or 24mm, can't make my mind up. I want to avoid zoom lens as it adds another level of indicision. Prime is my way. Thanks
Same journey for me! My kit is now 15-35, 35 1.4 (Tamron), 50 1.2 & 70-200. I will rent the 24-70 for events but it is not a keeper for me. Took me a bit to land here but I really love the primes in the mid range. Great honest video 🙂.
Great video! I am currently torn between two lenses I own, the RF 50 1.2 and the RF 28-70 2.0. I am finding I use the 28-70 more, but hate giving up the 50 1.2 - may do it though and put that money towards the R5 ii when it releases
Just a thought, but don't go chasing new cameras just because it's the latest release. The R5II is going to be marginally better than the R5 or even the R6II. I'm not sure what you're shooting with currently, but you'll most likely do better to keep using it and use the money you get from selling the 50 1.2 to put toward another lens that complements your kit. The exception is if you primarily use your cameras to make films rather than still images.
I had both lenses. The 28-70, the RF 50 1.2, the RF 85 1.2 and the RF 70-200. I rarely used the 50 1.2 so i finally sold it. The 50 was just too redundant for me.
Oh my!!! I can give new life to that 85mm for you lol. I've been renting lenses for my weddings. I know I should invest in the lens first but I went the opposite way because of renting. I bought the bodies and affordable great lenses
Just had RUclips recommend channel so, I am here Lenses.... So many little used lenses As a primary a portrait photographer, after many, many years, I am pretty much down to 3 (Full frame eqv) focal lengths.. a 35mm, a 50mm, and an 84mm regardless of the camera make I am taking photos with. Regarding Macro Lenses for portraiture yeah... can be to sharp, Most people want the eyes in focus and sharp and everything else not so sharp, my Macro lens really does not get used enough. Pre-covid I used a 50mm lenses almost exclusively, but afterwards, I prefer using the 84mm leaving a gap between myself and my model. As I work predominantly in a studio environment (and not a massive one) the 35mm was added to the kit for full body shots that were hard to do with the 50mm. Zooms I have never been happy with, even the premium F/2.8s just too many compromises (normally resolution at the edges of the frame) One thing I have got over is lens snobbery and not using good 3rd party glass. I pretty much exclusively use 3rd party glass (Sigma) Clients don't ask or care what you use, and if they are 95% as good as manufacturer lenses at less than 50% of cost it is a no brainier, but I'd really recommend hiring lenses first too (especially if you need a lens for a single event)
Welcome to the channel! Thanks for the comment. As you see, I love the 50mm focal length as well, and shoot the 35mm quite a bit, especially for personal stuff. Oh, and thanks for watching until the end.
Those are really good lenses that you don't use much anymore. We all have lenses like that. Good lenses that we don't use much but other people use all the time. It isn't right or wrong, just different. If everyone used the same lenses the world would probably be a lot less interesting. I have actually managed to sell some of my lenses that I rarely if ever used anymore. Your model was right about the details modern lenses can provide, especially that 100 MACRO. I shoot mostly wildlife so the little feather or fur detail is needed/desired, but no one wants to see every pore. I looked at your portfolio on your website, lovely images.
Thank you for your comment. I have to get better at selling old gear. Thank you for checking out my portfolio and the positive feedback. It is greatly appreciated.
It’s funny, the RF 50mm 1.2 is very sharp but in a different way than the 100mm macro. Have you ever seen an insect picture taken with the 100mm macro? You can see every little microscopic detail. It didn’t translate well for me when taking pictures of people.
Nice catch! I was filming with the R5 and 15-35mm lens. Take a look at the R6 Mark II with the 35mm in the camera bag in the beginning of the video and you notice a little extra space. That’s where the R5 lives with the 50mm 1.2. It is still in the starting lineup. Thank you so much for watching.
Haha, simple solution to this. Sell, sell baby. I sold my mint EF400 5.6L. My 70-200 2.8 is too much of a workhorse. I’m even considering selling the 70-300L and RF600 11. I just don’t need those focal lengths. Not sure if you have given the RF28-70 2.0 a whirl, let me know your thoughts
That's how it goes sometimes. It doesn't take long to tell what you like. That 50 on a cropped sensor is an 80. That 24 is close to an 35, which is a focal length that I enjoy also.
I have 20 lens that sit most or the time in my closet too, I have good intentions when I perched them, I will watch a few voids of reviews on them, and this leds me to own 3 different systems Nikon-Sony- Canon when one of these came out with a newer better I had to have it, this has become a big financial burden, as you well know most good lens run 2-3 k each also all the camera bodies. Like z9 z6.2 z f---the A1 the A7mark 5 then came canon r62 I have never made any money with any of these, oh yea don’t forget all the LIGHTING and stands also sits in my garage, I have a problem 😢 I think the next purchase is going to be the last, is a vicious cycle, with well over 150k invested what do I do???????????????????
Well, the big question is are you having fun with all of this gear? I hope you are enjoying it. If not, then both of us need to start researching the best way to sell used gear. Thank you for watching and your comment!
If I am not mistaken you're shooting an RF camera and referring to EF lenses - doesn't that alone explain halfway why these lenses are in your closet....??
You are exactly right. Shooting an RF system does explain halfway why I've moved on from these lenses. However, the reasons I don't use these lenses are more about focal lengths. Actually, one of my most used lenses is an EF lens--the EF 70-200 III 2.8L. My experiences with these focal lengths has helped me not spend thousands of dollars on the RF equivalents. The focal lengths I discussed just aren't my first choice. Thank you for keeping up with my story.
So funny. the EF 85 f1.2L I gave to my son, because of the slow focussing. Used the 1.4L stabilised instead for portraits. But now, in RF land, I am mostly using the 50mm 1.2L and the RF 70-200 2.8 (go to for all my events work). The 24-70 2.8 (an EF Tamron) - also got to my son. I use the 15-35 f2.8 a lot, combined with the 70-200 2.8. and a 7atisans 50mm manual focus f 0.95 - gorgeous, mostly for black and white night time shots. (it claims to be APSC, but works wonderfully on my R5 full frame). The EF 100mm 2.8 macro is super rarely used. I still have it for very rare use - probably because even my son doesn't really need it 🙂 Completely agree - try out lenses and find your own style. Don't just buy because some youtuber claims it's a 'must have'. No such thing. Even the RF 24-105 f4 kit lens is not really essential. The manual focus 50mm does wonders (and thanks to @PeterCoulsonPhotographer for showing the character of this lens on his youtube channel).
@@photographybydaniellee I would still try out the manual focus 0.95. It's cheap and has been a lot of fun using it. and because manual focus guide works best in black and white, I created a lot of nice black and white pictures. Love the character.
