- I had some issues with my mic and had to overdub a couple of sections, so if my audio doesn't match up perfectly that's why. Luckily Steve's audio is crystal clear and he is the star of the show, enjoy this fun and friendly art chat!

It's Steve Mitchell!!!! The crowd is going wild! Well.....I'M going wild! Two of my favorite art RUclipsrs together. Thank you, Lindsay for making this happen! ❤
You're welcome!
So nice! Thanks!
I love hearing about Steve's full journey, it's so inspiring. It shows that it doesn't happen over night. If you find joy in creating, you can nurture it over a lifetime and it can support in you countless ways.
Thanks so much Sarah. Well said!
Yes!
Steve was the first RUclipsr that I ever subscribed to. His dry sense of humor. Reese and his T-shirts made me feel comfortable. Then I saw the joy. And I now try to spread that joy. You were my second channel. Loved to watch you - never made cards. But your carry-over into my art journey had an impact. Love you both. Wish you didn't make me feel old. So I'm looking at it as we're been friends for a long time.
Steve was my first art channel.
Steve was definitely one of my firsts too. Lindsay’s was another.
We are all spring chickens if you ask me:)
🤫@@thefrugalcrafter
Thanks so much!
Hey thanks again Lindsay for having me. I enjoyed it a ton. Let's do it again some time.
Any time!
I love both of your channels! We recently bought a house near Asheville because I know the area up in the mountains from my childhood. It’s a landscape painter’s dream.
When I was just out of art school, I went to work for a commercial illustration studio doing paste up and loads of typesetting. The guys there told me loads of stories about former clients who would hand them a check for 1/2 the amount and tell them to sue him for the rest. They never did. I hated doing what I was doing and I was pretty young so I quit and went to law school. Nobody ever tries to cheat me and tell me to sue them because they know I will!
Lindsay, you and Steve were my first and only mentors for a very long time. Can honestly say, you guys were my grounding force. I started with M. Graham paints because of both your great insights. This is awesome because you two are the best.
Wow, thank you!
Aww thanks!
Great podcast Lindsay. I remember watching Steve years ago, and listening to his commercial graphic artist journey was amazing. His wealth of knowledge deserves a ‘ How to manual’ for when that electromagnetic pulse hits us, and takes down the Internet /computers, we can carry on. 😂🎉😉✨💜
Totally agree!
Awesome to see two of my RUclips heroes. Great talk and lots to learn in the golden nuggets that you both share. Sure was like old times.
Aww, thanks for watching Marty!
Hey thanks Marty! Glad you tuned in.
Yay Steve! Lindsay it would be fun to have Steve and Marty together with you at some future point.
It would!
It doesn't get better than Lindsay and Steve!!! The two icons :)))
Aww, thanks!
Wow, thanks!
I love portraiture, and when Steve does portraits! Part of me wonders if people aren't being notified as much or something. I just happened upon Steve's portrait videos
rather than being notified, and I am subscribed. I loved the chat between you two. Thank you both for being amazing teachers and beautiful artists, and for sharing your talents with us all.✌🏽❤️🎨🐕
Thanks!
Thank you both for being such inspirational artist. It’s extremely difficult to find real sincerity from videos in today’s social media world.
You bet, out pleasure!
Our pleasure!
what a fantastic episode, Mind of Watercolor helped me rediscover my love for watercolor ☺☺
Wonderful!
I’m enjoying the interview with Steve so much!! Two great RUclipsrs - it doesn’t get much better!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks!
Thank you!
Wow Lindsay - another favorite of mine - Steve Mitchell - thank you both for all the videos that have allowed me to learn 🙏
I love Steve! He’s definitely in my top 3 favorites! So cool to hear his full story! I’m so enjoying these podcasts. I always said if I had a RUclips channel I would just interview art people & art companies. So glad someone is now doing it!
Thanks!
My two favorite artists.........what a gift!
Thanks!
Yay 😀 I love 💕 Steve Mitchell (aka Mind of Watercolor)!! I have learned so much from him about watercolor, pen & ink/line & wash, gouache. I have got the Watercolor Essential Notebook that he’s recommended too! This was definitely a wonderful video to see. Thanks for sharing this with us!!🥰
You are so welcome!
Steve ROCKS! 🥰
Aww, thanks so much!
A new art chat to enjoy with warm tea and a blanket 🙂.
Thank you two, it was very interesting.
Loved this. You two are my favorite artists online. Your generosity in helping newbies and even experienced artists is very much appreciated here. Thank you both!
You are welcome 😊
I started learning watercolor 3 years ago - all I know I’ve learned from teachers like you two - who share your knowledge on U Tube - I’m forever grateful (I’m 80 now & watercolor is my passion 👍❤️😁
Wonderful!
Lindsay, your channel was the first watercolor channel I started to watch, and then you either had Steve on, or mentioned him, so I then checked his channel out. Now, I'm big fans of both of you. Thank you both for sharing your knowledge and talents.
Wow, thank you!
My two favorite RUclips watercolor instructors!!! You and Steve were the first RUclipsrs I subscribed to, and the ones who helped me enter the world of watercolor painting. Thank you both!!!
Wow, thank you!
and thank you!
Two of my fav art youtubers talk about the day, i am so happy finally seeing you both in the same space. cant wait for the inspiration and insight that you both will embark. thank you Lindsay. Maybe we can aim at James Gurney someday.
Fingers crossed!
Love Steve follow him as well as you. I remember that stream. You had Steve, Cinnamon and a few other people (can’t remember). You should do that again. Love these podcasts you have been doing interviewing artists!😊
Great interview. You, Steve and Marty were the first 3 art channels I subscribed to when I joined youtube. Loving the poscasts.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for that!
Thanks Lindsay and Steve!💕 Namaste 🙏
Thank you too!
Sketchbooks - visual diary’s - love them! No pressure - just fun while learning!
I'm really loving your podcast series, Lindsay! Every week I'm so excited to see who is going to turn up next - and OMG the idea of a round table discussion sounds GREAT! Thank you to Steve as well, I've learned so much from both of you over the years 🥰
Yay! Thank you!
What a treat! Just came over from the audio...because seeing you both chat together is priceless.
Thank you!
So kind thanks!
Hi, Lindsay and Steve. Thank you for your video. Have a good week.🎉.
You too!
Thank you Lindsay Weirich, finally an interviewer that let’s the interviewee answer!! What wonderful interview. I love both of you you. I have been long time subscribers of you both!! Keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😉
lol I just got an airbrush and was wishing one of my favorite artists would mention how they would use it, and using it with gouache was one of my questions. Thank you so much for mentioning it.
That is awesome!
It’s so cool, because Steve was actually the first watercolor channel I ever subscribed to ! He helped me have a starting point lol and he helped me Fall in love with the medium ❤ not long after him I found Lindsay !! 🎉🎉🎉I also have the arches oil paper, it feels. Very much like watercolor paper, highly absorbing, very weird experience lol
Thanks and thanks for the oil paper feedback.
Totally awesome, thank you
I have been waiting for this video. You are both RUclips buddies. When I watch either of you it is a joy. Someone who loves art as much as I do is kindly giving me time and content. You are both treasures. Thank you. And I love M Graham thanks to both of you.
Our pleasure!
Awesome, thanks!
_First!_ Great to see you both (from Portland, Oregon) 🎉😊🎨
Yay! Thank you!
I’m loving these blog-casts Lindsay! ❤ Very informative, inspiring and also entertaining. Steve is a gem, as are you. Well done!
Yay! Thank you!
Two of the greatest You Tube watercolor instructors. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Thanks so much!
I’m a retired nurse. Always wanted to learn to do art, esp. watercolor. The hauls are really interesting sometimes because as a total beginner, I didn’t even know what supplies were available! The comparisons are helpful because I had NO idea about the difference between papers, paints, etc. I am subscribed to both of your channels and have learned a lot! Thanks for your hard work!
Glad it's helpful!
GREAT interview! Thank you both for all your work!
Our pleasure!
Thanks Lindsay and Steve. Great chat!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love it when you two talk shop! I’ve been inspired by Lindsay and Steve for years. It was interesting to realize that Steve has shown such dedication to art no matter what set backs or difficulties he’s experienced. Respect for that! But the really fun part of the interview was when you all loosened up and talked shop and opined.
Glad you enjoyed that! Me too.
Awesome! Thank you!
Love listening to you 2 guys found you all almost 5 years ago. I bought my first arches paper because of you Steve and I was amazed at how good I was getting because of that paper I have good paints an brushes but I think as a very newby to watercolor painting it’s very important to see your progress with good paper
That is awesome!
I love Steve! Thanks so much for having him!
(Lindsay......thank you for drinking from a mug. One of my personal peeves is seeing people sucking on straws and water or soda bottles, lol. It just looks bad, imo.)
I really enjoy Steve, thanks Lindsay!
Hi Steve! From Illinois! Love your RUclips channel!
What a treat! I love watching both of you! Sweet to see 2 amazing artists in one video:)
Thank you!
Thanks!
Oh man, two of my fave art ‘tubers! What a treat. I started out pretty much like Steve, ad design, art, composition, you name it for a small hot Rod magazine, then I quit there and they shut down. I soon got hired on as a receptionist at a newspaper, then they found out I was a designer, photographer, artist. I stuck with it for nearly two decades until til a new publisher bought it, and it was not a good experience, so I retired. Now I get to create for me! Never had the desire to take it to RUclips. You two do it right!
Thanks 😊
We try. Thanks so much!
Great job Lindsay! We love watching both your channel and Steve's. So fun when you guys relax and it was like we got to eavesdrop on too great artist and RUclipsrs just chatting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh and one more thing- I’m SO happy to hear such glowing reviews of the Daniel Smith gouache! I am a brand Ambassador for Daniel Smith and I know that John Cogley and the whole team at DS put a lot of work into this product and it shows. I love hearing that you and Steve are enjoying it and can’t wait to relay that to John and the other Ambassadors! ❤
Wow this was a great interview Lindsay
Wow, thanks!
My two favorites!!!
This podcast was excellent and so enjoyable. I really like hearing about the history from you and the other early you tubers. You do a great job with the interview process!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to listen to you and Steve. I have been subscribed to both of you for quite awhile. I have learned so much from both of you. Thanks
Awesome, thank you!
Great show, Steve is another fav of mine - very enjoyable 🎉🎉🎉
Glad you enjoyed it
Great interview/chat! I enjoyed listening to this podcast 2 of my favorite RUclips artists. This format is good because I can listen and do other things with only a glance at the screen occasionally, or sit down and watch. 👍🏼
Thanks for listening
This is so cool! I followed you both when I began my wc journey and I think you both make me feel like I’m always doing something interesting! Thanks for doing this, Lindsay. And your new spontaneous painting videos are my favorite, Steve! They are fascinating, even though I’ve only done a few.
Yay! Thank you!
my two favourite artists in one video. cooool.
Thanks!
Great interview - thank you both so much. The haul video mini discussion really was spot on. Apparently, quantity has a quality all its own!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great interview. I've been one of Steve's followers for many, many years. You and he were some of the first people that I watched.
Nice!
Thanks!
Most “haul” videos are a boring, tedious, display of I’m not sure what. I like Lindsay’s reviews because she is frugal, practical, knowledgeable, and informative. The review videos have saved me from wasting my time and money on a “really good deal” product I won’t like; and they have turned me on to some fabulous “cheapie” products!
Oh thank you!
I'm loving how different each of these podcasts are. Another really fascinating conversation. Steve is so lovely, it was really interesting to hear how his career progressed.
Great interview Lindsay!
Thank you:)
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
I had no time to watch a long video and wanted to "just have a look" - and now I'm glad to have "endured" the whole episode. That was very interesting and I enjoyed it very much, thank you very much to both of you 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching!
Marty and now Steve :). 🎉
🥰
Excellent video. I love both of you. Subscribed to both channels for years. Marvelous to hear so much about Steve’s art journey.
I completely agree with you about folks saying You need to become a RUclips creator (I love creating art and crafts, sharing with friends and family, I am a retired accounting manager, with a BA in Art😜, not interested in doing what you guys do). I appreciate all your hard work🥰👩🎨🎨.
Also, I do watch hauls to relax and see what I don’t need to buy. I think our consumerism is ridiculous.
I watch a lot of tutorials first. Then watch again when I am ready to create that project or learn the techniques.
Steve, I really appreciate the year end video of the supplies that you think are cool.
Lindsay, I love your honest, thoughtful product reviews.
Thank you!
Steve introduced me to MGrahm. I bought as much as I could afford 😂. You both have encouraged me in my watercolor journey. Both of you are teachers at heart. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I love Steve’s work!
Fantastic podcast! I really enjoyed both of you❤
Thanks so much!
I really enjoyed this conversation..I’m just getting started with watercolors and a little nervous. I used to own a gift shop where we had a decorative Pat ing classroom in the back and loved decorative art, but watercolor is a whole different thing and I just find myself fighting with with water and transparency’s and learning to relax and let the water lead me. Thank you Lindsay and Steve for this very relaxing and iinformative conversation. Much respect to you both!
You are so welcome!
I agree with another commenter about teachable vs patreon. I did a few patreon subscriptions during covid... and while i didn't have a problem stopping, when you do stop the content is gone. I appreciate the teachable classes. Sometimes I'm overly enthusiastic when i sign up... but they are there for me to pick up again when i want to.
Lovely chat. I enjoy you both immensely... so together you are superb. And Steve i always look forward to your Christmas suggestions (yes for me). You touch on things i don't know about! So please continue with them!
Best regards to you both!
Thank you!
I'd love you to interviews like this as 'lives' with viewer input. You could read the questions/comments at the end and have more of an interaction that way with your viewers.
Oh, i love Steve! He was the first one i started following, then Teoh, then YOU Lindsay! Steve is very disarming and soo chill 😎 Its just mesmerizing to watch him throw watercolor on a page that looks like nothing and then poof, there is a painting that is just beautiful! Pretty sure i found you from Steve's channel somehow...? Perhaps he mentioned you. Anyhow, this was wonderful and i thank you BOTH for your honesty and just sharing your gifts with the world! ❤❤
Thanks
Omg I would love to see Teoh as a guest. Organizing the time difference would be a nightmare though. 😛
Great podcast and interview. I enjoy both of your channels so much and hearing Steve’s origin stories in design and the earlier days of his RUclips channel was really interesting. Hope you guys do another pod/video again soon.
Thanks for listening, a new episode just went live!
Thank you for finally giving me a use for my Inktense paints. I hadn't thought about the layering possibilities
You are so welcome!
wow 2 amazing artists, love it, thx!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great interview. so interesting and fun Thank you!! I love that he does sketchbooks and not gallery art. I love sketchbooks and have desire to sell or be in galleries and get tired of people telling me to make money all the time. The process and learning all the time is worth it. I do give pieces a way or donate to a good cause.
There is nothing wrong with making art for the fun of it!
Great chat! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love urban sketching and I am a full time artist. Selling your art is a skill and you have to want to... I also make ceramics, ( like the watercolor bowl on Steve’s desk).. and I have added teaching more this past year.. great conversation you two! I agree that commissions suck, too much stress on us as an artist. I want people to buy what I make, not what they think they want..
Amen!
Love D Smith watercolor sticks - better value for the cost (I think) and same great quality!
The mashup they are referring was about 'what one piece of advice would you give.' I still remember that Steve Mitchell said "Focus on your contrast"
That's a good one!
Oh wow, I adore this man......
It's somewhat reassuring to hear that big, long estabIished channels are up against the same obstacles as small, or in my case, tiny ones. I don't want to do art haul after art haul, and the algorithm clearly doesn't like that.
I love these artist chats, and I love that they come out just when it's time for me to prep dinner. thank you Steve and Lindsay!
It makes the time fly!
I love Steves videos
You are both so helpful and interesting to listen too! I have been enjoying your channels for a long time, and learned so much from you! Thanks so much for your honesty and friendliness. Bless you!😊
Our pleasure!
with hauls I get to see suplies that work together or something I never saw or something that I see all the time but have no idea how to use, but I have stopped myself several times from buying some stuff even from your reviews. I get asked for art my by my family, and I love making art for them and I am always concerned with lightfastness. I love oil pastels but they often do not provide lf rating. I have learned so much from Steves videos, I binge watched his whole playlist for beginners before I even put a brush to paper.
Thank you both for your wonderful insights. I really am a huge fan of both of you. I have come to regard Lindsay as a friend and have followed Steve for probably just as many years. i have learned so much from both of you! As I have mentioned to Lindsay, things have been hard for me these past several months. Making 'art' for a living is sometimes difficult. I have been making my living through some type of art and/or design for over 30 years. But in the past several months, I have lost my passion for it. It is so hard to always create with how others will receive it in mind. t does tend to suck the joy out of it after a while. So I have been coasting and pushing the pile for the last several months (a girl has to eat! LOL!) While I listened, I painted something just for myself - not for others to see, recreate, or judge, and it felt good. I loved hearing how you both had these same feelings from time to time. It does help. I feel I am coming out of it, but taking my time. I haven't created something 'nice' for myself in a while. I need to make time to do that. Your thoughts and ideas really help. Thank you both for sharing your thoughts here. Lindsay - I love your series. Much appreciation.
Thank you, Sheila! I did the same today, took a huge 3'x4' canvas, put it on my easel, and painted a colorful abstract. So fast and fun! I think I'll put it in my kitchen! I didn't film it, but I did some vertical video I might use for a reel or short.
@@thefrugalcrafter That is good to hear. I bet it is nice to not have to think of how to 'teach' something when creating. While I love teaching, it can really take the life out of you if you don't do some creative things for yourself.
Hi Lindsay, As far as I know a Mottler was originally used to partially remove an oil glaze creating a mottled effect. It then kept its name when used by watercolourists as useful. It was used a lot for faux marbling and other effects. Other signwriters/effects brushes have been adopted across media like the sword brush but with less confusion ! I hope this helps.
Excellent explanation! I heard this from my uncle who was rebellious against my Grandmother who was a watercolor Artist and he pushed oil paints being the only “true medium” for “real artists”!
Interesting! Thank you!
another great chat with another great guest, Lindsay!
So great to see and hear artists together ❤️
Yes, I would love to know which companies own which!
❤I'm going to try his watercolor tutorials!
Please do!
1:02:21 I inherited a treasure trove of Arches paper (like 25massive 300POUND sheets and more!) from the late 90’s/early 2000’shave been so blown away that the sizing is still great! I’ve had it for 5 years now and even moved across the country with it and it’s still going strong!
Also inherited was some sheets of a strange and discontinued watercolor paper called Strathmore Excalibur-a 90# GLASS FIBER paper 😳 which never buckles EVER, but you have to use gloves to paint on it or you get fiberglass on your skin. I can’t find anything online about it either, it must have been a short-lived very bad idea! 😂
They probably worried about a lawsuit! Scary paper 😆
i dont get out much either ,this art community is awsome, yes a roundtable is a great idea,i would enjoy you and James Gourney together, thank you
Thank you!
Great interview with Mr Mitchell. Will be looking for his RUclips channel and maybe catch a glimpse of Reese. 🤣
Great idea
I loved this chat!
Thank you!
I enjoyed this podcast 👍
Thanks for listening
Fantastic interview! Thank you!
Thanks for listening
❤
