Mr. Bouriakov is just wonderful musician and not only. He plays as teacher of what is and how it has to be to play Bach on flute. Congratulation my dear Denis.
Ethereal. I've never heard it played as thoughtfully and lovingly. Denis is just forever in top form, everything is there at his fingers, and he can just enjoy playing it with everything coming out and everything being there. And, his playing is constantly improving if that is even possible. I can't rave enough about Bouriakov, his flute playing or his musicianship.
Some flute players play off center because of the shape of their upper lip. If you have a teardrop shaped upper lip its very hard to play with it centered especially in the third octave, becuase the middle of your upper lip keeps getting in the way of the air-stream, so you learn to play off to the side. Rampal on the other hand played more and more to the side the older he got. It has been speculated by others that he had dental issues as he got older and it caused him to move to the side.
With the volume up it sounds as if the mike is picking up a radio channel at times. Apart from that perhaps the greatest thing I've heard so far on YT. Coming from someone who in general isn't really a huge fan of flute music that should mean something.
MARCEL MOYSE, one of the greatest flutists of all times, played sidewards too, like Bouriakov. What counts, is uniquely the music. He plays beautifully.
@HOD72 I was going to say that too. He's playing far to the left and to line up the aperture hole (the hole in your lips where the air comes out) with the embouchure hole on his flute he has to play holding the flute like that. It doesn't matter except that your lips are in line with the embouchure hole on the headjoint. He sounds great!
it's only a wrong angle for anyone else, the only good angle is the one at which you play optimally. This angle can vary a lot with embouchure and probably even air flow. As you can see, he plays out of the side of his mouth, perhaps is it then advantageous for him to play the flute at that angle
everybody's embouchure is different . depending on where you are blowing the air from your mouth, your flute can be slanted as much as it takes to achieve a good tone.
Yes! Beautiful tone matched with beautiful music! I really wish I could play like that... And in response to some comments below, the angle isn't that big of a deal. I know in high school, my band director at least, wanted the angle for marching band, and it wasn't until much later that I realized how wrong he was!
@lovemily01 It changed the way of flute playing too. Moyse writes a bit about it in some of his books. Some argue that the recording industry ruined the sound of the flute.
It looks as though he's playing from the extreme left of his embouchure. I've only seen the late Jean-Pierre Rampal play like this. I just wondered if anyone else noticed it.
I'm flutist (not as good as him) and i love his interpretation but he looks askew, that's odd !! And I wonder how he can do this with his position O_o I am admiring !!
I think band teachers confuse holding the flute straight with holding the body straight. You want the flute to be at an angle (preferably a sharp angle) to your body. It follows that if you hold the flute straight you will either have a bad angle of attack or a posture straight out of hell, i.e. the typical band player posture. Either way you will produce a terrible sound. That is why all the good flautists hold the flute at an angle:that is what you need to do to play the flute well.
@GreaseAddict27 flute angles really dont matter... i think you are stuck in marching band mindset.. but whatever angle makes ur sound great is the angle that fits for you. everyone has different embochure (spelling?) and therefore we cant all just play with STRAIGHT ANGLES PARALLEL TO THE GROUND like what your section leaders might yell at you for in marching band
@BrookeAbbeyMatthew I'm sorry my friend but "floutist" went out of style 50 years ago. Gallway calls himself a flute player. It doesn't matter what you call yourself or anyone else. The question is, can you play? This flute player can play. He's almost too precise.
really nice. congratulations! but where is your emotion? Why do you play so emotionless? show your feelings, more people would like what they hear. You have to play flute as you sing a love song. From the deepest of your heart! :)
He has worked with the musical part of it. However, lacks dynamics. In piano has a change of color of the tone. a result of air push..and being stiff..... the problem of 99% of singers and wind players.... I hope one day this will change....
I'm an old and retired flutist(after 47 years of professional orchestral life)
I listened so many great flutists, but Bouriakov is genial and uniqe.
He is by far my favorite flutist. He has the most beautiful tone I have ever heard!

Sure a individual approach, so musical and one of hte most gorgeous flute tones I've ever heard. Amazing musician....

and i was wondering why the way it was held to the lips was weird...
thanks for the explanation!

BRILLIANT. I love how you bring out and give some weight to the low notes.
Excellent. I love the intervals in this solo.
Such a great musician
You played this piece amazing, the tone is just brilliant and it sounds really lovely.
brilliant. to get such depth from a single instrument takes a great composition and a great performer.
MARCEL MOYSE, one of the greatest flutists of all times, played sidewards too, like Bouriakov. What counts, is uniquely the music. He plays beautifully.
It looks so effortless...I only wish I can be this good some day.
Gorgeous playing, and with such ease. Love the interpretation.
It was just beautiful! I'm completely speechless. I want to be that good at my flute too but that was just amazing.
That's a very nice positive thought, but be careful of what you ask for. Being a wunderkind has its down side too!

Such a great player. Yeah, the way he plays off center is extreme and yet, so is his proficiency - mastery is the better word for him.
Absolutely beautiful music!
You just took me on a journey with your performance. Stunning!
DIVINO, COMPLIMENTI VIVISSIMI 👍👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Cordiali saluti, Anna e Luigi
Wonderful performance ! Great C.P.E.
I love the flute. it has a pretty sound to it.
Wonderful! Come to Italy pleeeease!
Muy bello Sonido..Excelente video!
lovely interpretation.
why do you need to stare at him to feel the music? his profoundness is from within.
Браво!
i love the flute. it has such a pretty sound. i play the flute!

Re: embouchure
Where can the right angle be found in nature?
Judge the tree by it's fruit

Wonderful! This fellow can make his own rules!

When are you coming to Asia?
his cadenza is simple and moderated.
Som gostoso de ouvir🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒

Yes! Beautiful tone matched with beautiful music! I really wish I could play like that...

Damn. Teach me!!
Trust me, you should never assault "A minor".
not far my favorite flutist, but a reference like performer and well playing on Altus ps

it depends on the length of your hands :)
Brilliant, he's a student of William Bennett

@vuklar Sounds like you should make some videos! pick that flute up!!! L.A. area? I'll record you.... I am a pianist........
@SprintKiller1 OK. uhm. That's how professional floutists hold their flute. k thanks.
