Great tips, Julia! I’m from Calgary and happen to be in Waikiki on holidays. We always go to the galleries. I got chatting to one gallery and they asked if I was an artist. Of course (hahahaha!) I said yes! I showed her one picture, actually the screensaver on my phone. We kept talking. She knew I wasn’t selling yet, because I told her so, and asked her opinion on how to get started. Like use FB or Insta? Should I have a business account or just use my personal one. Anyways, we finished looking at everything and said goodbye and left. Well, she came and found me on the street with her card and asked me to send her some pictures; that she wanted to show her director! I took her cards and thanked her and we left. I’m flattered, BUT…I’m from Calgary! I think I need to look at places closer to home first! But you’ve given me some ideas…thanks for your time!!
I just found your channel. Thank you for being here for other artists! I used to create every day until I went to university for fine arts. I’m not a museum painter, and that’s what it was geared towards. The goal was to NOT create a painting that could hang over someone’s sofa. Ultimately I was led to believe that I was not a good artist because my work wasn’t ‘artsy’ enough. So I haven’t created for 20 years. I’m so afraid of sucking! lol. But hearing from artists like you who paint from your heart and make an honest living from it… it really gives me hope that I can do the same.
I just adore your spirit! I am one of those new (ish) artist who began painting for myself during a long span of health issues a few years ago. Family and friends responded in positive and encouraging ways so I started doing paint parties. Then people began asking if I would sell a painting I posted. Now, I am on a personal growth journey in learning. I will say, I have crossed MANY artist, even local artist, who are not willing to share or teach. I think that is a gift as well as a personality trait. You are one of the loving, open & encouraging and I THANK YOU! Art has literally been a huge part in saving my life. Artist such as yourself, also take part in that. I hope to (as best I can and in what I have to offer) do the same for others. 😘🥰🤩
HiI my goal for this year is to create15-20 pieces and to get it into a gallery anywhere I haven’t had my art in public since I was 29- because I was working elsewhere all my life now I’m 57 and have spent 4 months straight doing art every day trying to get back my groove. It’s feeling better than 3 months ago. I haven’t completed any good paintings yet but am hopefull! I know my work is looking better than last month. And believe I can do this. I’m not working but am focusing on Art day and night. I’m learning a lot from you tube artists. An its coming back to me pretty slow but so happy doing what I got a degree in and not making a dime yet. I will be just learning allllll about art in this century Thanks for your inspiration!❤
Thank you for sharing. You explain things so well. I've struggled with art styles, but your explanation has made it clear for me. I feel so blessed seeing and hearing about your process. Your insight is very much appreciated. Love your unique style and your paintings. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤
That bit of art history was fascinating. Thank you for not gatekeeping, you are always so generous with your knowledge/experience 💜🤗 Do you find Facebook is useful for actual sales?
Hi Julia. Thank you so much for making this video in response to our comments on the last video. You really hit the nail on the head and answered all my questions. I have a lot to think about and do. I really appreciate you sharing so freely. And I look forward to your next video. Thanks again.
Thank you Julia! I needed this. I have tons of art that are all over the place in style and techniques, different mediums. Trying to find my voice and my style. This video helped me realize bold colors are my favorite thing. So in my case it was my first workshop were my style. After 40 years I now know the beginning of my art was where I should have focused on but through the years, different classes, styles, mediums and techniques actually hindered my original vision but it did further my skills. You suggested in another video to get color skill and knowledge down pat. I did that and now have a better understanding of the color wheel and color mixing. Thank you so much! ❤
Great tips Julia! Love your paintings! I love to paint as well. Is it possible to paint and sell your paints though you are self taught?Where to start? How to start?
Thank you very much. My studio overflows, and I had no idea where to start getting my work out the door. The research step had not occurred to me. I have no social media presence at all. Thank you for sharing all this info.
You are great Julia! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this follow up video. I so appreciate that you don’t gate keep and that you are so very willing to share. I hope someday to be accepted into your Square Foot Show ❤ I keep working on honing my style and finding what sells. 🙏🏻
Aloha Julia, I just found you on RUclips and I appreciate you sharing your process. I've never bothered to write a comment before, but I really wanted to say thank you to you. You have a generous heart! I just subscribed and look forward to watching your videos. I would love to see a tutorial on "color blocking"! Mahalo! 🌺
Thank you so much for sharing your tips and ideas to finding my artistic voice. You are generous in sharing your paintings and your tips. You mentioned before, getting prints and cards done in Montreal and I would appreciate if you can tell me where I can get the same? I wish to sell some prints and cards. What do you recommend? I enjoyed your video very much.
Insoiring and wise video - and by the way commissions can be fun to do - I have done quite a lot of- and I love to listen to the visions of somebody who is attracted to my art and give them a painting inspired by their story interpreted by me ♥️🙏
I absolutely LOVE your paintings and all of your good advice. Thank you! I have been an art teacher for a long time, but I don't have a distinct style because I jump around so much. I'm hoping that since I have already done some square foot art that is actually similar to yours, except more plants, that I will hit a niche that will buy my art. I already sell a lot of local river paintings, but I'm not as inspired as I used to be. Anyway, I will keep watching and be inspired by you. My RUclips Channel is not a good representation of my work. So, I will narrow it down soon, and get busy. :)
Hi Julia! This was a great, practical, and to-the-point discussion of voice and selling. I have several styles that I enjoy, based on the medium used. I have a retirement income and do not need to sell my art for daily living income. I use the money I make for travels. In this case would you still advise narrowing my focus to only one niche for sales, or post all my art? My sales so far have been through a large yearly show, and the gallery operated by my art club. I have sold pieces in all media and subject matter. Also, the ladies in your workshop were creating paintings very similar to yours. Do you want that result? How do you feel about that if they then sell the works which are so close to yours? I appreciate your willingness to share your expertise with all of us!
That was great advice and tips. I stayed until the end. I love all your videos. I’m a hobbyist painter. I give my paintings away most of the time. I’d like to just see if I could sell some of them. But I haven’t found my niche. I use photos I find online for reference. Maybe you could talk about copyright laws? Including the US. Copyright laws scare me. Of my my paintings never look exactly like the references.. 😂keep the videos coming.. ❤Julia
Hi Julia great video and tips although I am still a little nervous.. maybe one day I will sell my art but the dream is there ❤.. Do u have an opinion on those online galleries at all .. i would name them but feel I shouldnt u probs know which ones tho right?.. Im watching and listening all the way from Australia btw ..and although ny art is different to urs you certainly do help and inspire me ❤ so thank you
Hi Julie. I’m new to the painting world and growing all the time. I do florals and landscapes primarily. You mentioned Scrifit (sp). Who are they? Where else can I sell. I’m on Etsy but sales are not great.
I love your videos Julia and I really like you yourself. Also, you have a great personality. I shoot my videos in the space where I hang a lot of my art and so people get to see all the bright colours hanging around me while we do our yoga classes today we were getting ready for spring and our gardenscheck it out. You might like today’s video because I know you are an avid gardener and you’ll be out in your backyard pretty soon.
Please HELP. I varnished a painting with gloss coat. I absolutely hate that it darkened the colours. It also took away from texture and shading. I am new to varnishing my work. Can I add a matte finish over top. Will it bring back the texture and lighter colour. of my previously un varnished piece?
Varnish on acrylics does deepen the colour for sure. I am not sure if a matte varnish over it will lighten. But you can paint over the varnish to lighten
@ ok, do you mean I would have to repaint it? I do not want to restart. I have so many days put into this painting 😟. So many mixed customized colours etc
Yeah- thats the best advice for price points - raise your prices when they are flying off the shelves at the present price. (would also suggest to people reading this - don't go below 50, but thats me from the experience of under-valuing my work for too long.) Thank you for the video! I am at a point where i want to break into the nicer/more expensive shows but don't have the upfront money needed for the professional tent /walls that are frequent requirements when applying.
I love how you went from bananas to canoes.😂 Jokes aside, I think you're right about the niche element though, it can be hard to find it at first but once you do, the algorithm knows.
Finding my artistic voice is my problem. I talk myself out of creating what I want because I don't think I could monetize it. Sometimes I feel like I would be better off being a hobby artist and abandon the pursuit of art as a career. But this video seems to pose a good question: where does your authentic artistic expression intersect with what consumers want to buy? On a different note, I wonder how many banana memes will be born out of this video, lol
Thank you for being so generous with your mentoring! You’re a huge help for all of us ❤️
You are so welcome! I am happy to help!

That kind if organic “conversation” is the best. Your voice was heard and she gave you something back!
Linda, hello from fellow freshie.
@ Hey, Bonnie! Good to see you here! I love Julia’s style, too. It’s the COLOR!!!
I really really appreciate your video and your presentation. You get straight to the point, you’re realistic and I love your work.
I am happy to hear that!

Thanks Julia, that was great information. ❤
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Loved this and noticed how similar the shape of a canoe is to a banana. I'm sure you did too.
That’s a great observation! For those banana obsessed artists.

I think you can do any style. One thing I may suggest is showing like together. Don’t mix styles if you are presenting them.
I also find the way I teach doesn’t create mini me’s. people quickly move into their unique style.
