So refreshing to see a young artist advocating academic practice. There are no short cuts. You cannot develop anything bar a very superficial ‘style’ if you haven’t done your mileage and studied the fundamentals. You can always tell when a young artist is taking that apparent short cut, without realising it’s a dead end. Cause by the time you are middle aged painting cutesy manga or like a South American street artist ain’t such a cool look. Do the hard yards, learn your craft, and arrive at a style organically, from your own understanding out, rather than trying on a costume and counting your likes. The figure is vital, even for informed abstraction; there is just no getting around it. Hats off to you, young gentleman painter. A long career ahead of you.

So refreshing to see a modern art painter being actually really good at drawing. And that shows in your paintings too. A lot of times I see modern art where the fundamentals are missing, making it just a mess on canvas.

I agree with you, not forgetting the artists who trace or use projectors all the time.
With explosion of useful camera phones , too many are not learning to draw from scratch....free hand loose sketches .
I bet the universities are having a hard job working out who can actually draw properly.
I'm an art teacher, so I see alot of students buying art on line and claiming it as their own work.
Working from home with covid will allow many to cheat

I mean most artists are good at their craft - the only reason modern art is so bad is because art gallaries are money laundering operations with no incentive or passion to make great art, and cities lack the culture of artistic wonder, so when they commission pieces, they wind up corporate, routine sterile - in a healthy culture and society, art will flourish, as those who choose to be artists will produce great works, for all, and a wide range of a little something for everyone to enjoy.

Dude, Slew, you have no idea on how much your videos inspire me to really pump out traditional art again. I’m a Graphic Designer and Photographer by trade. But due to work, I’ve had relegated both mostly to my clients and portraying products and services. And idk man, seeing your videos just make me hate how much I’ve left behind the practice of drawing, and how much I do actually love drawing.
    Keep making videos dude

Same! I am currently a Graphic Designer / Artist in a big company. At first I was really excited working and proud of this career. But immediately, I grew tired of it and frustrated too. I am the happiest when I'm drawing and painting. That's why I am giving it more time now than ever before. I am still okay with graphic design but it's only to make a living.

Nice video. Growing up, much of the art I did was simply drawing with graphite. I love the smell of graphite and pencil shavings. My father is a literal draftsman of 50+ years (very successful) and I spent much time with him at his office in my childhood. These days, a big goal is me to mentor the nine of my children who are interested in visual arts. Keep up the great work! Love the drawing videos, they're seriously inspiring and it's always nice to remind yourself as an artist that the basics are just as important as the "wacky" more abstract projects. I think this is why I'm so obsessed with Art History and I'm glad I have a catalog of artists, projects, and eras to go back to and reference when I want to practice certain things. Enjoy the weekend Slew! Another awesome video 👏

To draw, or not to draw... That is the question. With all the other mediums out ther at our fingertips, it is so comforting to just have paper and pencil in hand, creating endless ideas. And yes your skills as an artist improve the more you draw. Perspective, lighting, proportions, avery little nuance can be drawn with time and practice.

Honestly so true! I always knew that having fun comes from within. Learning fundamental core concepts can be a bore to some especially if the concept(s) is not one rooted in the interest of the learner but its all the same and its all meant to build a core foundation so that when one is being creative and feeling like a rule breaker, they can know the rules before they bend them. I love to just do things my own way but sometimes I notice that the core value understanding enhances my own work.

    lengthy personal anecdote alert:
I just graduated art school, and it was a super brutal process, not at all what I was expecting or thought I was signing up for. All the fire I came in with was really stomped out by a faculty with a lot of preconceived notions of what art is and should be and should do. And so many times I just wanted to stop, stop calling myself an artist, stop practicing stop showing to others, and I certainly have reshaped my intentions around what my practice will look like. But SLEW you always reinvigorate my love of making and doing so THANK YOU for making these awesome videos that show how art can, even the technical stuff, can be fun and productive at the same time. You have such a great screen presence, your attitude is easygoing but you still pursue a calibre of excellence. Your passion is infectious (in a good way), and I'm so grateful for your channel, it really helps me out. I hope to return the favor one day!

This style of drawing method is based on copying old masters's drawings and also drawing after nature; often refers to a precise and detailed figure drawing showing the high level of understanding artistic anatomy. In broader sense it can refer to all kind of drawing after nature.
