Exactly bro
i played it by ear and kinda changed it a little, also planning on doing it on my piano too.
Poetic 😀

Feeling is the Label
@George Lynch Dixon MOST Guitarists play Guitar Chords in a "SCHOOLED", ORTHODOX and PROFESSIONAL Manner. Jimi' played Chords and his Fingering of the Fretboard was TOTALLY Unorthodox and wasn't Confined to Traditional Fingering! That's what I have achieved as a Guitarist and I also apply that approach to my everyday Life in General.
Stop making shit up.. jimi never said that
Wonderboy by Tenacious D has the same opening riff. It also starts with the D Major chord
Yessss!
I was trying to think of it and it was on the tip of my tongue
Exactly what I came to see
Sooooo glad someone else noticed the wonder boy connection lol
Won't you take me far away from the Mucky Muck now...
I think what makes this so emotional is that it kind of sounds like a lullaby. Like when you switch between major and minor keys, it's almost like it's rocking you back and forth. It makes you feel comforted. It starts happy, then gets sad, then gets happy again.
It's a Gm/D chord. Sometimes he changes to Gm6/D and Gm9/D
This chord sounds amazing in this progression he used. It's not the chord itself, it's actually the progression, which is the context the chord is used.
It’s like a spicier minor iv chord substitute than just D to Gm basic
I'd rather call it a E half diminished with its seventh in the bass, but I guess it's not really important
@@siemonblidener652 Yeah good point-
/ E-7b5 in third inversion
Yep. Nice chord. In this progression it sounds very heartbreakingly sad..... but its also used in Radioheads Paranoid Android with a very different feeling.
@@paul479 100% Paul, if it sounds good, it is good, period.
However, This helps me (and some others) remember this chord, and also use this like a tool, or like learning a new word… so we can use that chord
1) in another situation, (easily and without a capo)
2)with other instruments,
3) and describe to other musicians, (especially ones that don’t read guitar player hands)
…there may be an overemphasis sometimes in the academics of Music Theory, but it’s also super useful like reading and writing
- to each their own though-
The minor 4 chord (G minor in this song) is very powerful and emotional. John Williams uses is frequently in Star Wars... Minor 4 is easily one of the best chords
My fellow green bay fan i love you 🔥👑
@@AKMGuitar GO PACK GO!
@@hyoh-wu yessir my man gopackers
but it's a D to D augmented that is the ??? chord he was referencing. minored 4 was particularly somber coming from the minor 6 (Bm)
The harmony in the beginning is subjective, you could analyze it as a Dmaj, going to a Gm6, OR a Dmaj voice leading to a Dmaj7(#5/9) creating a Lydyian augmented harmony. Its all about context and the beauty of Melodic minor harmony and the chords being all interchangeable. Or it could be derived from a harmonic major (1,2,3 4,5,b6,7) on the D which would make for the 4 minor chord. Again, subjective and about context.
I lost my Father a month ago and this piece reminds those good old days we Spent with him!❤
My heartfelt condolences.. PLEASE check out a most miraculous book that can give you great comfort.. “Embraced By The Light” by Betty Eadie
I lost my father 2 years ago to Covid..
it's not only the chord or the progression themselves, the magic comes from the way you play it!! absolutely fantastic!
Yeah. Anyone could use those same chords and transitions, and bang them out w no soul whatsoever. Such beautiful timing and nuance here.
Lovely, but, it's not the chord itself that makes people emotionnal, it's the chord progression
So true. It would sound a bit abstract without its company
Exactly! It matter which other chords surround it!
Context is everything.
Right but it's not the progression that's prettier, it's the space between the notes
@@andrewcrane5105 nothing makes me cry more than dead silence
This just makes me feel like a man who's lying in bed all alone at night, missing something, but he doesn't know what that is....staring at the ceiling, looking back to his long tiring day, wondering if he'll ever be happy....but he consoles himself with the hope that tomorrow will be better and finally drifts off.....this music is such an inspiration that it weaves a story😌

Well said
I love this chord progression too, No Suprises from radiohead uses it, it's so very beautiful and melancholic... love videos like this!!
That major to augmented is just so lovely when approached right. Thank you for the listen.
It's one thing to play fast or technical. It's another to play the right chords in the right way... with soul and emotion
Both are great ! 😀
I agree, I would choose the latter any time in the week.
Your right
you can play both lol
@@ostrogothiccyoutube8118 Sure, but it's a matter of taste I think. It's like saying you can play both classical music and heavy metal. Yes I could, but I only like classical. For me, too technical and fast looses it's feeling somehow.
In Europe(netherlands and germany at least) we call this a "mol-dur" chord or progression. Basicly u just play the minor 4 chord (minor 6th interval from tonic) in a major scale. It is a a very powerful tool and has been used over the last centuries by many and i mean many composers/songwriters. U keep the tonic in the bass and add an E(6th), so D/Bflat/D/E which makes it sound so haunting because there is now also a tritone(Bflat to E) and a major second(D to E) in the mix. Very famous examples are:
Queen: You're my best friend
Beatles: Till there was you
Basicly every jazz standard
Love theme from Gershwin's: An american in paris
And many many more. It is literaly everywhere. Keep a look out for this awesome chord construction it will change your entire life.
Ps: if u can find the 3 different mol-dur's in stella by starlight, u know u understand what the mol-dur is!
This needs more likes
This is super helpful but I have a question: How is the E the 6th here? The tonic is D so the D/Bflat/E isn't the Bb the minor sixth to D?
@@repentandbelieveinjesuschr5875 buzz off
@@iqless7313 I meant that the chord the vid is about is a minor G(4) over D (tonic) chord. The E is a major 6th interval from the G, so thats why i called it the 6th. Rereading my earlier comment i do see that it wassnt very clear.
Important thing is that u can look at this chord as a minor 4th chord with the tonic in the bass (mol-dur progression) if you want to put it in any harmonic context.

The minor 4th, much like a well placed key change, is a silver bullet for goosebumps. I also love a DMaj7 in this type of progression. Adds a wistful almost bargaining feel if that makes any sense.
That was a beautiful solo. Heartbreaking yes, I loved it!
You can hear this chord progression in Misunderstood by Dream Theater. Beautiful
I thought Octavarium maybe but it needs checking
Exactly, that song instantly came to my mind after hearing both chords.
ok i replied saying it was different but then i replayed the video and the beginning is almost the same jkjkjhkjnfkjn
Octavarium too I think, Someone Like Him, Medicate and Razor's Edge parts... Anna Lee by Dream Theater too probably.
I heard it soon as I read it! One of my favourite songs ever!
Tenacious D in Wonderboy did this as a minor chord and damn its beautiful
Now we know the secret of his power!

THANK YOU lol I thought it was the d I just needed validation in my life
Dream theater uses this progression alot. Basically the 4th chord is a picard chord. Very beautiful
omg thank you! i was trying to work out in my head where i knew this melody from. as soon as i saw Dream Theater I heard it, "Misunderstood"
@@geneabrego9759 correct😉you're welcome
Am glad someone noticed :D
It remiends me of "finally free" of dream theatre
What’s a picard chord?
This isn't a picardy chord at all.
A picardy chord (actually called "picardy third") is a chord that is used at the end of a piece of music. The said piece is in a minor key and ends on the root (but in a major key, not minor) It's typically heard in medievil music and baroque era music.
Totally different to what you are saying about the 4th chord. I understand the logic, but it's not the same context.
Deam Theater's song's (such as "misunderstood") uses a chord progression: Major Root and a minor 4th. Which is what you are trying to explain.
This is simply just a chord progression with a phyrgian or Mixolydian b6 feel.
From what I hear on Misunderstood, I think it is Mixlydian b6, due to the notes in the melody and chords thereafter...
*Gorgeous playing. I love that simple chords can make such lovely progressions. This is a playing style I started on when I was 11. It made me who I am today. And in high school.... the ladies didn't mind me playing around them, to add.* 😉
Ah yes, the minor plagal cadence. One of the most emotionally powerful motions in all of music. I especially love your use of a m6 chord here. Gives the whole thing a very nostalgic feel.
Wow the beginning is exactly the progression of the Coco movie theme "Recuérdame". This is probably why it sounds so good and fits well in the movie. cool!
Same thoughtssss! That was my first observation.
That’s what I was thinking
I was thinking the same!!
That is hands down the most beautiful guitar I have ever seen. Astonishing!
This brought all my happy & sad childhood memories back to life. For that you have my gratitude, thank you!! 💜
this sounds like the one that makes you sleep after a long tiring day. this video come to me just at the right time. chords, tone, and how you play is just 💯💯💯
This is very emotional, I tried playing it in different keys and it's very satisfying, hearing this composition in different keys gives a refreshing melody. This melody somehow made me remember the time my father first taught me guitar, I love you pal wherever you may be now
Yaye. A million likes. That was awesome. Sad music is just as beautiful. It helps when I'm feeling that way, it allows me to synchronize sadness in private so that I don't fall apart when im out in public. You just have to get on with life and do the best you can 🤗🤗
I would love to see a tab for this. As someone getting back into guitar this is a great practice song.
Opening has a hint of George Harrison’s “cheer down”. Very moving and just grabs you
Very true
George used to say he loved doodling around the D-chord. He's right, it's magical. Paul McCartney did it on Mother Nature's Son.
For my money George Harrison is the most underrated songwriter of the 20th century - becoming less underrated and more appreciated as the years pass though.
Oh true!
It also reminded me of 'That is all' - where he moves from D to D augmented to bminor to D7 - love that lil chromatic run .
Has a hint of remember me from coco as well
Marco, your heading caught my attention... I couldn't believe my ears and eyes...
After an accident that had forced me to give up playing my favourite instrument, the accordion, I focused on my guitar skills. With major D, being my favourite key, I stumbled upon that progression and it ignited all the sentimental emotions within me. That was about twenty-odd years ago. Today, I play this beautiful progression on my according. Until today, I never realised how many musicians love this progression. Now I know my musical worth. Thanks for posting this video; that's my favourite (chord) progression. 🙏
This is such a wonderful and amazing AND INSPIRATIONALL comment
God Bles you Marco! You are so inspiring and the MUSIC you make is so approachable. Your playing reminds me of Laurence Juber. Just beautiful! Thank you.
So beautiful, your heart playing makes my guitar cry.
That is the chord in Ten Years Gone by Led Zepplin. Jimmy Page is magnificent at finding the most beautiful and haunting open voiced chords!
That’s what I was gona say. Crazy no one else noticed it’s basically the same song. Sounds great!
My first thought
Straight away I thought Led Zeppelin 👌
I'm reading one comment after another and thinking WHAT????? nobody is mentioning Zeppelin?? TY for restoring my faith in humanity 😁🪶
Not just the chord but the whole progression. That minor 4th was powerful. Loved this!
Amazing. I closed my eyes instantly. I could feel every note! 👌🏻
Danke Marco.... Du hast mich damit zu einem Song inspiriert.... vielen lieben Dank!!! 🙂
I love how your playing is so simple yet emotional. Keep it up!
Marco words aren't enough to express how thankful I am for all your hard work. Your playing and tutorials continue to inspire me.
Absolutely lovely! That hit me emotionally.
Oh my friend you really have a great place to pick away at for hours on end. Your studio shop and recording area seems enchanting.
I don't feel sad or any other type of way. Just appreciating how nice it sounds and this guys skills./
Classic Capricorn 😲
Its probably because we dont have enough context to prove how sad it can get. Like I stumbled upon this by accident, and just listened to the beautiful harmony it posed. Had I been in a emotionally-harmed situation, I would have cried then and there reminiscing.
The most heartbreaking chord is really the one never played, never heard, never tried….by you! 50+ years playing guitar. That’s my input. 🎼👊🎼
Nah this one is the most heartbreaking chord
Stoned much
The melody sounds similar to a Christian song named Treasure I know it in Spanish ( the lyrics) Tesoro! I will try to find out if does exist in english
Yes, that is your input. You should plug your guitar in, then you’ll hear it.
@Pete Moses Lovely sentiment!
I had goosebumps the whole time. So beautiful
Lovely,I could listen to this all day 😊
And just like that, I picked up my guitar. Thank you sir. This was beautiful.
Thank you so much. I have a condition in which I can't cry unless I hurt myself. This chord made me cry so hard. I am so dehydrated now, but thank you I need to drink more water. Good day chap.
You simply bring joy to the world. Thank you!
beautiful playing
Man, you were breaking my heart... and then you rewinded time and led me to how it happened... and then you broke my heart again IN CONTEXT. Masterfully done Marco.
My bf plays and I'm always telling him to play the minor chords because they're so much prettier than the major chords. Very beautiful, btw! Loved this!
It’s the transition from major chords to minor chords back to major chords that your brain recognizes as a pattern of dissonance back into harmony which gives your brain a feeling of satisfaction. That cognitive dissonance creates and triggers emotions that we wouldn’t otherwise feel which makes minor chords and music itself so beautiful and intriguing as an art!
.. this song literally uses major chords
@@liminalusername I'm not sure I specified that this song used minor chords.
Kinda. It's usually based on the key. Minor chords generally sound sad, but it all depends on the other chords and notes played, and in what order, if it's done correctly, etc. A lot goes into giving sounds a certain emotional quality. I'd highly recommend checking out some music theory videos. Extremely fascinating.
@@winser21 fascinating
Molto bello come giro di accordi, direi proprio da chitarra acustica! Ottimi spunti di riflessione sull'armonia! Grazie Marco!
I'm not crying! 😭
Nice song 🥲
D maj 9 -> Gm6/9 (in different inversions) - I love this change. You can call it a minor plagal cadence, if you're a classical person, or an inverted iib5 if you're into jazz.
There isn't a g played. Are the notes played D, Bb, D, E? I hear it as the 5th being raised, and the 3rd moving to the 2nd that then resolves to back to the tonic.
Or augmented chord.
@@abespain actually such chords will appear as different name or movement to various individual depending on his understanding of music theory and perception. And no one is wrong about it (eg how Richard consider the chords as a b9 chord while it is a raised 5 (augmented chord). But he is probably more technically correct as the music is moving backward.
If Richard and me played the same thing as Marco, they will have different flavour due to the way we look and feel the chords.
There is a passing G note happening as such Richard came out with Gm 6/9. For me I may even try to use a G diminished. So yah.....no one way of looking at music. Go gi e it a try.
@@fredgoh I dont hear any g note though, looking at the tab I also dont see one. I understand the movement, it works if you grab the g from the low e (that would give you G. D, Bd, D, E, so Gm6 or the iv).
I guess my point is; where are people getting a G from.
@@abespain at about 12 secs that is the first G note he pressed (3rd string 3rd fret and 3rd fret 1st string). Depend on who u speak to, some may interpret this as Gm /D or whatever names / extention u want to call it. Unless he is having alternate tuning, that should be a G note at 12 sec.
U can practise with Marco's tab, it is very good exercise. Hope it help.
While listening to this, I literally envisioned myself meditating gratefully about my life while sitting alone on a bench in the middle of a hot summer night, watching the moon and the starry sky reflected in the lake in front of me, while a soft breeze caresses my face and makes the trees behind me sing along with the crickets.

I was like okay let's see ... and literally this has a touch with emotional ragas from here in India ♥ well done sir
Bhai Kaha apne charukeshi , shiv ranjani , darbari jese raag or kaha ye western music koi comparison hi nahi hai indian music is the best in the world
@@jayminlashkarimusic822 both are different bhai, you simply cannot compare or judge. Indian music doesn't have the concept of harmony at all it is limited to one scale. Sa never changes aka scale never changes. while in western music the rules and modes(ragas) of scales are not as prominent and vivid as Indian music and they don't replicate gayaki ang as much as indian music , neither they have the use of sympathetic strings . You simply cannot compare there have been excellent musicians in western music and Indian music who have escalated the standard of music in general. It is utterly Foolish to compare two different styles of music. A good musician will learn from both and a legend will use both to create even better music like Ustad Zakir Hussain and john mclaughlin.
Aesroix Code that is just Dsus2(b6) which means dha is komal. it sounds great but not at all like a raga it takes a lot more than throwing a flat sixth to sound like any raag. A raag is identified by it's pakad which is a certain arrangement of selected notes within a raag. Two raags might have same notes but because of the way they move and their pakad they feel totally different. Here this man is playing chords and in Indian music there is absolutely no concept of chord there is a tanpura to support melody and melody projects a raaga. This chord is very beautiful but no this arrangement doesn't sound like a raga.
