Frank Ifield Medley

  • A LITTLE BACKGROUND FOR THIS SONG:
One of Frank's many appearances on American television. He performs "From Out Of Nowhere" and "She Taught Me How To Yodel". As usual he is performing to a full house. "She Taught Me How To Yodel" was one of the songs Frank did during a Royal performance. He was asked to perform for the Queen and her family and he was reported to be the Queen Mum's most favorite singer. Frank learned that the Queen Mum was very anxious to hear him yodel. He had not planned any specific yodeling number at the time but, after he heard about the Queen Mum's wishes, he selected this one especially for her. She was delighted.

What a talent! As a teenager I often wondered why he never became a big star in the USA. Good looking, with a pleasing and distinctive true voice and an incredible falsetto. In a way, I suppose he was "too wholesome" for the changing times of the 60's and 70's.

Frank lost his singing voice during the 1980's due to bad lung surgery. You are correct he was born in Coventry but he is now retired in Australia. Still in good shape and very active although his singing days are over. Great fellow. They don't make them any better than Frank.

Thanks for you comments. So may people share your view. Many are of age to have been fans of Frank back in the 1960's and later. But, I am hearing from a large number of new fans who are too young to have been fans back in the 1960s through the 1980's. They are hearing his songs for the first time and are struck by how fantastic a singer Frank was. They say they love his music. Again, thanks for posting your kind words. Bud

This song was written in 1931 by Johnny Green and Edward Heyman and was first recorded by Bing Crosby. Most of the early recordings were at a slower tempo. This I like much better. This is from an Ed Sullivan show.

I bought most of Frank's records even before 'I Remember You' and always enjoyed his modernising of a lot of old songs which he countryfied. Sadly, his career waned somewhat when Norrie Paramor was no longer his producer which was a shame.

SECOND:: Frank Ifield doing "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away."

    • @BudGray
      @BudGray  10 лет назад

      Eddina,
I'll try to answer your two questions.
      Re Your question number two.
"Funny How Time Slips Away". Frank does a super job with this recording. I don't believe he recorded a video performing this song but he did cut some vinyl's. As of today, you may purchase a CD or a tape cassette of this recording of Frank, April 4, 1963, on eBay at the following site.
      www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=frank+ifield&_from=R40&_osacat=0&_from=R40_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR4.TRC2.A0.H0.Xfrank+ifield+aint+it+funny+how+time+slips+away_nkw=frank+ifield+aint+it+funny+how+time+slips+away&_sacat=0
      RE you question number one.
I don't know of anytime Frank appeared on Johnny Carson's show, although he was certainly popular enough to have been a guest. I believe you must have the Ed Sullivan Show in mind where Frank was the guest star on several occasions.
A few of these American appearances on the Ed Sullivan show are as follows, but I have not been able to obtain a copy of any except for Season 16, Episode 12. That show features Frank, Milton Berle, Al Hirt and others. Years ago the video was available for download on a website but I cannot find a download today.
      (a) Episode Detail: The Ed Sullivan Show - The Ed Sullivan Show
This might have been Frank's FIRST APPEARANCE on the Ed Sullivan Show,
      December 15, 1963 on CBS - Season 16, Episode 11
Milton Berle; Al Hirt (“Java”); Frank Ifield (“Daybreak”); Georgia Brown (“I Got Plenty of Nothing”)
      (b) The Ed Sullivan Show, December 22, 1963/ Season 16, Episode 12
Frank sang "The Winter Wonderland" and "Waltzing Matilda." A few of the other entertainers on this episode were Buster Keaton, Tessie O'Shea, Frank Ifield, George Kirby
      www.tv.com/shows/the-ed-sullivan-show/december-22-1963-buster-keaton-tessie-oshea-frank-ifield-george-kirby-106966/
      (c) The Ed Sullivan Show - Season 19, Episode 33. May 7, 1967, The Supremes, Xavier Cugat, Charo, Roberta, Peters, etc.
      www.tv.com/shows/the-ed-sullivan-show/december-22-1963-buster-keaton-tessie-oshea-frank-ifield-george-kirby-106966/
      (d) He appeared as a guest on many TV shows in the UK and USA. For example, he was the guest star on American Bandstand, October 17, 1962, Season 6, Episode 33. AB-1368. He sang, "I Remember You"
      www.tv.com/shows/american-bandstand/ab-1368-frank-ifield-352763/
I'm sorry I could not be more helpful. Videos of the TV shows are difficult to find.

Dear Bid Gray : Thank you for your
      excellent answers. Much appreciated.
As you suggest, it's possible there IS NO
video of Frank singing "Ain't It Funny How
Time Slips Away." ................I'll be happy to hunt a vinyl or a tape.
      Re: Frank of Johnny Carson.
YES. He was there. That is the FIRST time I ever saw and heart Frank Ifield. And I've been a fan ever since!
When Johnny Carson was introducing this
Australian singer, I waited. Then, when Frank stepped through the curtains, all long and lean, blonde, and dressed in a tuxedo (or maybe it was a dark suit), ....my thought was, "Oh, NO.....Not another one of those !"
But then he started singing !
      I was a goner !
Great voice, great flexibility, super arrangements, vitality, joy of life in his work.
I've kept that memory of the FIRST time
for ?? somewhere around 60 years...
and would just LOVE to actually see it
      and hear it again.
ThANK YOU for your very nice reply.

Yes, born in England but to Australian parents who returned home shortly after the war. I interviewed him once and tried to pin him down on that - was he an Aussie or an Englishman? He was a bit noncommittal, whether out of politeness or genuine confusion I'm not sure, but he's lived here in Oz for many years now. I suspect he considers himself basically an Aussie with very fond memories and a strong attachment to the old country. Not surprisingly. England was very good to him. A great singer. Fabulous voice and a nice guy.
