East Anglia is littered with evidence of WW2 airbases. Mildenhall and Lakenheath are still in use by the American military today.
Shame Mildenhall is to close . Many happy memories of the air shows they used to have there
It's not closed
They did originally intend to close it down. But there was a change of plans
By 2017, the closure process had been put on indefinite hold and in February 2020, it was reported it had been extended to at least 2027.[35][36] In July 2020, the Department of Defense announced that the US military would in fact be withdrawing from Spangdahlem and that the 100th Air Refueling Wing and 352nd Special Operations Wing would remain at Mildenhall, thereby keeping the base open for the foreseeable future.[34]
BEST AIR SHOWS IN THE 70s/80s!!EVERY BODY STILL TALKS ABOUT THEM
Very interesting. Thank you for the video. All the best from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
Only this information is wrong. I am from East Anglia. There are no US bases here. They are British bases that the UK allows the Americans to use. The Americans do not own the bases and they cannot build anything on them unless they get permission from the British Ministry of Defence first.
shame they did this doc after the F111 were shunted out. Bad ass beasts those were, loved them flying by the school on afterburn. What a great sound that was
I loved my time at RAF Mildenhall in 1981. I’d to visit someday.
Although out of print, try getting hold of a copy of "Airfield's of The Eight" by Roger Freeman. I had a signed copy, lent to someone never got it back.
Some things are incorrect, neither mildenhall or lakenheath were used by the US eighth air force in ww2.
I hope I can get "home" before they mothball RAFM, the bastards - I graduated from Lakenheath HS in the 80s
Mildenhall not closing now. Lakenheath just about to receive its first F35A's.
0:38 Canadian aircraft in uk base?? Woahhh
Upper Heyford had more F-111s than Lakenheath
Can you tell me how many?
eifeldude1 can you tell me how many?
Well Lakenheath had 94 plus a few spares . So you might well be wrong ?
Nucular??? It’s newkleer!!! Nuclear.
And hare in Norfolk thas nuukluh hent ut
I am from East Anglua and there are no US bases in the region.
Mildenhall Lakenheath the old raf Sculthorpe
Sculthorpe is used by raf and usaf
@stevefreear3394 I know you wrote your reply 11 months ago but i have only just seen the post. Not American. Used by the Americans but owned by the RAF. There are no US bases in Britain. They are all British bases that the Americans have permission to use. Why for instance does it say RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath over the gate.
raf in name only
No peterred is correct. The bases belong to the RAF / MOD but are leased to the USAF.
