  • This D.I.Y video - How To Install Large Format Tiles On Bath Room Wall - For Beginner - Part 1 explain in details the process of installing large tile on a bathroom wall or shower wall. Before I installed the tiles I made sure the walls are perfectly level so I did not need to use the the level system spacers but I could, The tiles I use are porcelains and the thin - set is a non sag thin set. The video shows how to spread the thin-set on the walls, how to make back butter and how to level the tiles on the wall.

    Glass tile is installed on a bathroom shower using a high polymer content thin-set recommended for glass mosaic tile. The glass tile in this video is a mosaic tile and is not transparent. This video shows how to achieve a full coverage of the thinset on the back of the glass mosaic tile.
    Mosaic tiles can be regularly shaped square tiles or broken tiles that the artist arranges by hand.
    Position the last two mosaic sheets that will take you into the corner of the tiled area. Lay the sheets next to each other on your work surface and bed the tile by moving the tile sheets into close proximity, about one grout line width apart, so that projecting tiles from one sheet overlap mesh backing on the adjacent sheet.
    Trowel your thinset mortar onto the wall from your last installed tile to the corner. Drag the V-notch side at a 45-degree angle to scrape off the excess mortar. Flatten the V-notch if you are installing glass tile, as the lines of the notch will be visible behind the glass.
    Install your two sheets of mosaic tile. Bed the mosaic pattern together. Use spacers as necessary. Tap with a rubber mallet and block to seat the tiles well into the mortar. Double check that the mosaic tiles are level and straight and that none have fallen off
    Allow the thin set to dry 24 to 48 hours before grouting.

    why u change the dry wall to backer board since it is not shower area why did not you used primer to install it on the regular drywall thanks

  • @FromTheHood2TheWoods

    I messed up when I framed the shower and put on the backer board. There are a fe spots where it’s like a half inch raised. Maybe from to much red guard also. Can I just start from the higher spot and begin laying the tile on the wall, the rest of the tiles I would have to apply thinset and back butter really thick to get it to be level to the higher spots. Or should I skim coat the whole wall with thinset before laying the tile to try to get it all level

    Thank you so much. Your videos are very good. By starting 1/4 off the ground, I suppose I can place a 1/4 " shim and start tiling. My tiles are high quality, square and same size (rectified). Is unsanded grout inferior to sanded grout?

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  4 года назад +1

      Yes you can use 1/4" shim. Unsanded is not inferior. You may use Mapei ultra color which can accommodate 1/16" or Mapei epoxy grout. Just make sure your tiles are the same size before you install them (when 1/16" is the space between tiles). Rectified tiles from different boxes may have a slightly size deviation. This may be an issue when the space between the tiles are 1/16".

    Cementitious backer board IS NOT WATERPROOF!! It will actually absorb water. Just because you put hydroban on the seams does not make it waterproof. You have to apply the membrane over the whole surface.

      Hi Shane,I always wondered about that very thing.Is it required by code?redguard is a fairly new product when you consider how long people have been laying tile.theres no doubt in my mind that it would help,but is it redundant.every shower that we have demo are tile attached directly to wonderboard.i have yet to see it soaked with water..why is that?

    • @shoneycutt7767

      I think mitigation is the best process. Why not make sure you get no call backs. And give an actual warranty on your work. If you take progressive pictures of the job it will cover you in case of any failure.

      @@shoneycutt7767 Not to mention not even waterproofing where the backerboard was punctured with the screws? This job will be a call back.

    Hello Joseph, thank you for the video. I have same questions: 1. Why no waterproofing on the cement board, and if I choose to apply a solution like aquadefense do you see any problems with the tiles bonding? 2. Would the bond be better if first apply a wet sponge on the back of the tiles, too? 3. Any reason for applying the thinset with the square trowel vertically and not horizontally?

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  4 года назад

      You do not need waterproof in bathroom but in shower where needed . I do not see an issue with the bonding. If you put waterproof the bonding will not be better(please ask the cement board manufacture). No reason you can do it both way After apply thinset you setup the tile and move the tile left to right make sure the thin-set spread evenly on the tile.

    Did you use a mechanical wall anchor to hold the weight of the wall tile? How heavy is the wall tile?

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  4 года назад +1

      No I did not. You do not need to consider the tile weight because the wall is concrete (backer board)

  • @johnal4560
    @johnal4560 4 года назад

    Do you have to use backer board ? can you install it on regular painted wall??

  • @tillmansr2002
    @tillmansr2002 4 года назад

    Is the ledger board required/necessary if the installation has a linear drain (I have photos to share, I'm DIYer) and is already 'level'? Can the first row of tile start on the ground floor? Also, what size grout joint is that installation? Can 1/16 be used or is 1/8 inch 'safter' for a DIYer?

    • @josephk9182
      @josephk9182  4 года назад +1

      The tiles must be installed 1/4" above the floor. If the floor is level (horizontal ) you may start tiling 1/4" above the ground floor. The size of the grout (in the video) joint is 1/8". You can use 1/16" depending on the tiles quality you are installing. It is better to use 1/8" because when the joint is 1/16" you most likely will have to use unsanded grout . Also when the grout joint is 1/16 you may see the tile imperfection (depending on the tiles quality). Remember to maintain 1/8" space between tiles and (corner) walls .

    Well you looked like you were doing it right until you put mud on the back of the tile. Waste of time, mortar and isn’t correct! You put the mortar on and scratch it when you put the tile on move it left to right and forms a vacuum and tile sticks. You’re welcome!
