I love how attentive the maitre d is to the little girl. She was probably going to be at home alone on her birthday. He's aware she's probably not thrilled to spend her birthday with a grownup. So he wants to make sure she gets some birthday cake. He serves her a slice like he's serving a VIP. There's so much going on in this scene.
It's such a wonderful movie, for me. I love so much about it. This scene is terrific. Adam's reaction to "I've had better." Toni's little laugh. And Mummy watching from the background, with a barely visible smile. Sienna MIller's subtle expressions after Helene and Adam find the flavours they have been searching for, through many nights. And the ending. There's hope for all of us.
Sienna Miller going back to work after watching “The Ogre” sit down to keep her daughter company…she knew right then and there he truly cares for her and her daughter.

As someone with overly sensitive taste buds, I completely get where she's coming from. In order for me to enjoy a cake, it has to be whipped frosting, because sugar frosting and butter cream frosting are too sweet without the smooth texture to balance it out.
Comrade!! I have found another like me!! I am polite and I will eat the damn cake, but if I go back for seconds and thirds, then you know you've got a perfectly balanced sweetness.
If you have worked in a restaurant ever there can be appreciation from that side. IMHO this movie was well done. The actors portrayed very well and Chef Gordon Ramsey overlooked the movie. If you can look up a movie called Today’s Special. It came out I think 2015.

This is an awful scene. He had his entire kitchen staff demand he bake the girl a cake before the "ogre" relented. And now he walks off the line to present the cake and deserves redemption after making her mom work on her daughters birthday? The previous scene has the girl's mother request the day off to spend with her daughter on her b-day and he denies it to test her limits. The freaking maître d’ has to babysit her!
Well the maiître d' voluntarily baby sit her and second its the maiître d' decision since he own the restaurant. Now take your fedora and eat it, we dont want to hear it
@@dangeloraymond8533 That does not make me feel better. Maybe it's different in Europe but when he grabbed his sous Sienna Miller because he's an alcoholic drug addict most of the staff would have just walked out.
