I came across this video the other day and out of many I have watched yours was the most informative. I went to your site and downloaded the free mini cookbook and decided to and bought the full paperback cookbook for cats. I haven't owned a cat since mine died back in 2011 and recently a stray cat has adopted us. We took him in and took him to be scanned.... not microchipped and not neutered either. He looks to be about 3 yrs old they said when I got him scanned. Here the law is you have 30 days to actively look for potential owners and I did that for over a month while I fostered him as the shelters here are overrun with cats and kitten season has begun but 2 weeks ago the shelter told me that it has been 2 months no and no one has come forward and I could bring him in and they would prepare to try to adopt him or if I wanted to keep him I could as the 30 day period has lapsed. We chose to keep him and now he is part of our family. I've had him on ACANA cat food...... he gets half wet and half dry per day. (he just grazes on the dry cat food so he doesn't get much at all.... 1/2 - 3/4 c per day if that.) And the ACANA canned cat food ingredients look good but the cost is just crazy. Here it costs $2.79 for a 5.5 oz. can. For a months worth that is about $84 a month. I've been researching and wanting to switch him to homemade cat food which I'm seeing is healthier for them anyway. Thank You for sharing this video. I learned so much from it. Now in your recipe for the 1 lb. meat can that be 1 lb of regular meat (meaning not the prepackaged ground meat)? Like I was thinking buying bone in chicken thighs, skin on and boiling them and making my own bone broth.... just water and the meat...... and then removing the chicken from the broth and let cool before removing all meat from the bones and then blending like you did the ground chicken. Just curious. Again thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks a ton for the support and for all the love you've shown to your new cat. It's awesome to hear you're considering homemade food. And yes, you can make your own ground chicken. It's actually a great option for cats, as it's lean and high in protein. Sounds like your kitty is in for some delicious meals!

I've found that the servings of Meomix I've been feeding my cat no longer sates him. He's about 6-years-old, so maybe his dietary needs have changed, or, perhaps Meowmix is cutting their food with filler to keep prices down in a market where cat food prices have become absurdly high. Either way, little guy deserves better eats. This video was a good guide for what to and not to put in it. I may not outright go full time homemade, but it's probably a good idea to supplement his diet with some homemade meals.

Your recipe is the best I’ve seen by far and I’ve put in an order. I really hope it works out with my picky cat lol!
The best part about making your own is you can customize it for your picky eaters, my dog's allergic to white meat and chicken is in EVERYTHING plus it's only 20 bucks a week for my large dog, his fur is really soft, and his gas doesn't smell It's literally the same recipe as hers lol so ik this'll work for my cats too

I used canned mackerel in brine that I rinsed and deboned. White Rice cooked, a hard boiled egg, pumpkin and water! I need to get some of the premix to add nutrients! Yes, but we generally recommend the Feline Blend for kittens; if adding egg add the shell as well for additional calcium. Here's a blog post for transitioning your cat's food: holisticvetblend.com/blogs/news/ditch-the-kibble-tips-for-changing-your-cats-food-when-you-have-a-picky-eater

I am so glad I found you! I had 3 cats which turned into 9! My cat had last 2 litters so we kept most of them. My question is how many times a day should I feed them this and how many batches a week should I make? I have been buying them the Kirklands dry cat food because at one point it was just too many cats. So now that we decided to have 9 cats I want them to be on the same holistic eating lifestyle.
Hi Lili! I have a free cookbook that you can download on our website www.holisticvetblend.com that comes with a feeding guide and more recipes you can use.
Thank you for your support! You can try different proteins or try drizzling some tuna or sardine juice (from canned in water). Offer a few teaspoons here and there. Try mixing it with whatever they are eating. Good luck! I struggled for years to come up with this formula as my cats are very picky. They love it now!
You are more than welcome :) I do not recommend sweet potato for cats. You can download the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about the recipes.
Nice recipe. Thanks for sharing! I saw you’re adding the whole eggs. I’ve always heard/learned that vets always recommend to remove separate the egg whites and only add the yolk. Let us know what you think!
Thank you for your video. Just bought it. 2:32 I Hope it’s going to work. My cat had a UTI and the vet wants him to be on a special diet. I know these special foods aren’t healthy but it avoids future UTI , I want to add this natural food to his diet and monitor him to see how it goes I Hope One day he won’t Need the special food anymore and only eat fresh food. 🤞🏽
Hi, great info in this, I picked it over about 12 other cat food videos because of how thoroughly you explained everything. May I ask where you got your organ meat powder? I literally gagged yesterday when I opened the bag of chicken hearts, gagged again when I put them in the pressure cooker and seriously almost vomited when they were done. The smell was just too much. I had to put it all in a big ole ziplock in the fridge because I couldn't finish processing it lol. It's still sitting there, like a mini Jaba the Hut, goading me every time I open the fridge. Next level gross!😝
Hi, there is organ meat present in our premixes. I am also doing the same thing as you are way way back and that is one of the reasons I created Holistic Vet Blend. You can check our website at www.holisticvetblend.com :)
at the moment I'm using brown rice I have seven house cats so I use 4 cups of brown rice 1 qt of homemade broccoli cheddar soup that has not just broccoli but carrots as well and there's no onion there's no seasoning it's all about the fiber and chicken stew is added no seasonings really I mix everything together and it's great because of the nutritional value and it really helps their gut
Although these may be healthy for us, this recipe is deficient in many nutrients: calcium, taurine and retinol just to name a few. Cats differ from dogs in that they are obligate carnivores. Satisfying their caloric needs with brown rice is also not the best idea, although it sounds like they like it! I urge you to work with a nutritionist to balance your recipes, but I'm not gonna lie, our premix is the bomb!

Hey, Doc! I went through your cat cookbook and noticed that it says 80% lean meat for all recipes. Most ground chicken I find at the grocery store has misleading labels saying that it's " low calorie" or "skinless" but doesn't state a percentage.. so I decided to make my own minced chicken 😀.. I'm feeding a kitten so which parts do you suggest that I use and how much of each part? Should I remove the skin or keep some? Thanks for your efforts 😊

Thank you for the video❤ Slightly confused with a coconut oil for cats though (seems to be quite unnatural of an ingredient for them)….wouldn’t it be better to replace it with some tallow or butter please? Thanks
Hi! Coconut oil is a safe choice to add to your cat’s diet. It is mainly known for maintaining proper diet and healthy coat. You can use grass-fed ghee as an alternative.
We have chicken, turkey, fish flavored cat food. Why not mouse/rat flavored. They could use the NYC rats make them into food- problem solved...am I wrong?
Friskies used euthanised animals for their pate which has lead to the death of many once healthy animals. Would you just eat something chemical laced? Like an NYC rat that eats just about anything? Weird way to say you don’t care about the well-being of cats.
Been searching around trying to find an actual book paperback or hardback?when all this goes down digital stuff won't be much use especially if you're running through the woods thank you great info
Wonderful video! I've been wanting to make my cats homemade cat food and this is easy to follow. I think I will pass on the organ meat. I am a vegetarian and that would just be too hard for me, although I realize my cats need meat. Turkey meat it will be. My cats also prefer pate.
My cat has stomatitis (mouth disease) and commercial cat food is not working. He doesn't chew but licks the juice. This looks good to us. We are going to make it. Adding liver for calcium. Any suggestions ill be appreciated. Thank you!!!
I would recommend adding as much bone broth as you can (make your own so you can limit the salt). Blend the recipe well and add as much liquid as you can.
I'll give it a try with my fussy cats. They prefer chunky gravy style so I guess less time in blender. Also can I add some chicken hearts?. Or chicken liver? Would I leave out some of the ground turkey to keep same ratio of meat to supplements?
Hello G Silver! There is organ meat already present. You could add some additional chicken heart or gizzard, but I would not add additional liver as there would be too much Vitamin A in the diet. And you would stick to the recipe. For example, if you did 3/4 pound of ground turkey or chicken and 1/4 pound of gizzards and heart meat.
This is such a helpful video! My cat was diagnosed with IBD and I am trying to transition him out of a diet of hydrolyzed kibble so he’ll get more nutrition. Do you ever serve this immediately without chilling it first? If not, how long to chill?
I’m looking to make this for my two Bengals . One of them is an extremely fussy eater and pukes every single day because he doesn’t like any food I ever give him. Blood work and other testing shows he’s fine, so I’m really hoping this will help him out.!!

There are a few studies that show feeding raw may strengthen a cat's immune system, and many pets have done very well on raw diets. However there are also many studies that show pathogens in raw food, and each individual pet and their family has different needs. For this reason, many veterinarians are opposed to raw feeding. I lightly cook what I feed to my cats. AVMA does not recommend feeding raw diets due to the risks of exposure to zoonotic risks (spread of Campylobacter or Salmonella) to humans. Use proper hygiene, especially if there are immunocompromised individuals in the household.
Is it possible to complete the recipe then freeze-dry it, and reconstitute it with water later? I know freeze-drying is a great way to retain nutrition and make foods store well, I am curious how it would go with this cat food. I’ve really enjoyed your videos! My cat has been thriving on this diet and using the treat recipes for clicker training has been a big win!
After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be frozen for up to 6 months. I'm not sure about freeze-drying but you can't reheat the recipe because of some nutrients in there that is heat sensitive.
I love your recipe but wondering do I just keep in the refrigerator for a week? Do you feed it cold or remove it 30 minutes prior to feed time? How much and how often? I’m so excited to follow your recipe! Thank you so much for showing step by step ! Very helpful.

Thank you for sharing!! I have a Russian and a, Snowshoe Siamese! One has health issues concerning his kidneys and they are extremely picky eaters! I ran out of cat food and decided to make some! I used canned mackerel in brine that I rinsed and deboned. White Rice cooked, a hard boiled egg, pumpkin and water! I need to get some of the premix to add nutrients! I'm going to start making my boys homemade food!!! 😊 Blessings

Would it be suitable for kittens?
Yes, but we generally recommend the Feline Blend for kittens; if adding egg add the shell as well for additional calcium. Here's a blog post for transitioning your cat's food: holisticvetblend.com/blogs/news/ditch-the-kibble-tips-for-changing-your-cats-food-when-you-have-a-picky-eater
First of all this is amazing. I have a question about the coconut oil - Google is telling me that cats shouldn't have a lot of it. Any thoughts?
Hi! Coconut oil is a safe choice to add to your cat’s diet. It is mainly known for maintaining a proper diet and healthy coat. Just make sure to follow the recipes. You can download the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about the recipes.
the salmon oil and probiotics i add them separately

I am so glad I found you! I had 3 cats which turned into 9! My cat had last 2 litters so we kept most of them. My question is how many times a day should I feed them this and how many batches a week should I make? I have been buying them the Kirklands dry cat food because at one point it was just too many cats. So now that we decided to have 9 cats I want them to be on the same holistic eating lifestyle.
Hi Lili! I have a free cookbook that you can download on our website www.holisticvetblend.com that comes with a feeding guide and more recipes you can use.

You are a servant of the cats and their people. Deep thanks❤
Got my supplements today so making a half batch to see if my extremely picky cats will eat this? Fingers crossed!!
Thank you for your support! You can try different proteins or try drizzling some tuna or sardine juice (from canned in water). Offer a few teaspoons here and there. Try mixing it with whatever they are eating. Good luck! I struggled for years to come up with this formula as my cats are very picky. They love it now!

Thank you!
Nice recipe. Thanks for sharing! I saw you’re adding the whole eggs. I’ve always heard/learned that vets always recommend to remove separate the egg whites and only add the yolk. Let us know what you think!
Raw egg whites have avidin which binds biotin. Once they are cooked it is not a problem. So raw is a no-no. Cooked is o.k.:)
@Lama- yes, egg whites are not tolerated by cats….
Thank you for your video. Just bought it. 2:32
I Hope it’s going to work. My cat had a UTI and the vet wants him to be on a special diet. I know these special foods aren’t healthy but it avoids future UTI , I want to add this natural food to his diet and monitor him to see how it goes I Hope One day he won’t
Need the special food anymore and only eat fresh food. 🤞🏽
Does this work with you my cat had the same problem

I'm definitely trying a version of this tonight.
Let me know how it goes!
This was so helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Awesome ,thank you I was watching a video they started with cooking egg shell and all sorts of powder vitamin and other stuff . I was like nope
This is much appreciated but I was wondering how I would introduce this diet to my cat since I’ve been feeding her dry and wet food.

You can add it to your grind if you choose.
Thank you for this recipe

Can you make a couple weeks, or a month’s worth ahead of time? If so, is it a matter of freezing everything and thawing out as needed? Thanks!
Yes, after cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be refrigerated for up to 6 months.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. It’s a renewable resource for sure 😆
Rats breed easily and could be raised for cat food in an apocalyptic situation. Coturnix quail are easy to raise as well and easy to butcher.
Friskies used euthanised animals for their pate which has lead to the death of many once healthy animals. Would you just eat something chemical laced? Like an NYC rat that eats just about anything?
Weird way to say you don’t care about the well-being of cats.
Wild rats and mice carry disease and worms...no thank you
As a NYC Native, I can testify that those rats are practically radioactive, so no. 🤢
Thank you so much!

I will do that. Waiting for the senior pre mix to arrive and will remake the batch. I did make the bone broth. Thank uou so much.@@HolisticVet
Make all its food puree
Thank you so much
You're most welcome :)
I find that adding sardines to the recipe helps. Try a few different proteins such as lamb, turkey, and bison. Good luck and let us know!
@@tr5680 my cat doesn’t have an allergy. I just tried to make him 2 different recipes and he walked away from them. It’s upsetting. Feeding him is a nightmare, yet all vet testing and allergy elimination show he is fine 🤷🏼♀️
@@alexandrad2228 Chicken doesn't agree with my cat and it's in most cat foods so I understand your problem. Turkey mince cooked with a little water however did work. Mine ate it chopped into little pieces. She recommends trying different proteins.

I do the same except it's all raw, much healthier.
I am feeding 14 outside cats and growing need recipes that make lots

Is it possible to complete the recipe then freeze-dry it, and reconstitute it with water later? I know freeze-drying is a great way to retain nutrition and make foods store well, I am curious how it would go with this cat food.

Greetings, I am seeking clarification.
At the start of your reply here, you state cooked homemade food can be refrigerated 4 days but later in your comment you state 6mos. Did you mean "raw food" been be "frozen" 6mos?
Do you offer a raw food recipe or were you stating a general reference for proper storage?
