If anyone was wondering when the pilots say "Fox One" or "Fox Two":
The phrases said by the pilots when firing their missiles is NATO brevity code for the types of missiles being launched. "Fox One" means a semi-active radar-guided missile (AIM-7 Sparrow), "Fox Two" is an infrared-guided (heat-seeking) missile (AIM-9 Sidewinder), and "Fox Three" is an active radar-guided missile (AIM-120 AMRAAM).

I am not American born but having lived there, I love USA and this movie is just one of the best. The casting for this movie was bloody spot on and superb.
I think of the foreshadowing in the beginning of the film when President Whitmore is first introduced to the film. The news anchors on the television are talking about how weak his is and what a wimp he is. Then throughout the film he exhibits bravery every step of the way. To which he then gives one of the most legendary speeches before literally leading his troops into what they had to imagine at the time was certain death.
MAN!! The 90s! Such a GREAT time for action movies!!
I remember how amazing this was in the cinema, I Was only 16 at the time.
This scene in particular was just amazing with the visuals and music, but also the surround sound effects of missiles and bullets firing everywhere.
Ah, I miss movies like this.

I remember the theater erupted when the first missile went through.
Word is that in some theaters, that second missile striking the ship drew a standing ovation.
Considering how dark the movie is and how much this one sliver of hope was built up, I can certainly believe it.
I always thought about how long those Aliens had the shield, then all of a sudden they had the explosion. They had to be like *oh shit*

I.T. dropped the ball. Though he did say the shields would probably only be down a matter of minutes which is a good response time.
There's a level in Star Fox 64 that slightly resembles this but I guess minus the huge ship.

Unless I'm mistaken: the pilot of Eagle 7 is the same guy that wore the Harley-Davidson hat. I had a thought that he was a fighter jock in Vietnam and after the events of this movie he encouraged Miguel Casse to become a pilot and mentored him.

They did. Watch the scene again. You see multiple HEAVY impacts from larger than fighter rockets on that ship's bottom. At least patriots did fire, if not even other tanks etc.

Yes out of missiles. Still, a good volley of 20 mm rounds from the Vulcan could have done a lot of damage
Not realy. Those missles barely scratched the outer armor layer, if at all. All they did was look good after impact, nothing major. 20mm? Wouldnt even dent the cityship. Against the superweapon i dont know. If at all it could have ben the laser hitting a target like directly in front of it that destroyed it (we will never know).

Against a ship the size of a city, there is no other weapon such AGM-86 AGM-158 as Tomahawk missiles only fighters with AIM-9 sidewinder and AIM-120 missiles, which have a small warhead and for such a ship these missiles are like mosquito bites.
In reality, the role of the fighters would be to protect the B-1, B-2 and B-52 bombers, which would drop 2,000 lb Mark 84 bombs on the ship.
I believe is a bit of an oversight with production and script. The Hornets should've been calling Bruiser instead of Fox 3 as they were tossing AGM-84 Harpoons.
Would those bombs do anything to the city ship. It's a 19km ship made of alien metal
@@joeswanson733 You see the damage that a sidewinder does....true that its not much but it somehow punches through the front plating and leaves glowing damage behind.... a single 2000 lb bomb is enough to sink a Cruiser class ship, just to give perspective. A B1 can carry 62 of them
In actuality they probably would've been using lower yield nuclear weapons imo.

No nukes or nuke carriers left. This here assault was a last ditch effort as we all know. And they went so hard all in you see tanks and patriots fire at the ship at the end, so how would they even be able to launch one of those? Suicide style? not gonna happen.

A mistake in the movie was that the president fired 5 missiles when he only had 4.

There were F-14s beneath the F-18s. 2 out 3 of my favorite 4th generation fighters.
Harriers as well right behind the Tomcats. Though tbh the Tomcats dont need to be that close. Have them higher up and further back hammering the Mothership with Phoenix missiles once they confirm the shields being down.
In reality it would be better to use cruise missiles and ballistic missiles or anything else instead of the sidewinder

What I'd like to know is how David and Steve survive a in a crashing alien space craft ,falling to earth at a high rate of speed and land only where they can be conveniently picked up. Walking away from said craft. surely they should be dead.
Its a movie, you should first ask how the super advanced aliens didnt noticed up a 1947 crashed ship entering their mother ship. Logics dont apply in hollywood. Anyways best movie ever

I don't think high level aircraft mean anything against craft that can casually reach orbit and artillery is a sitting duck against an enemy with air superiority.
That question makes more sense for the first battle, immediately after the cities were destroyed.
By the time of the final air battle, though, I think they were using whatever they had left. I'd imagine that heavy bomber bases would have been eliminated within hours of the first battles.
Artillery, I agree with. My guess for the Area 51 battle is that there wasn't any nearby. But in other areas, yeah; I'd have had any howitzers going, MLRS rocket artillery, even tanks just pointing their guns upwards at the ships.
@kingsteve8083 I believe the thing was the Military was concerned with the evacuation of civilians, and when the city destroyers were starting their destruction in the 1st wave, many military personnel that were on military bases near the cities, or otherwise trapped in traffic trying to get in said cities, were vaporized, also taking much needed missiles and fighter jets. Then when the Fighter Squadrons that tried to confront the Destroyers couldn't penetrate the shields and were wiped out by the alien fighters, they likely swarmed the nearby bases where the fighter jets came from and destroyed those military bases too, further depleting resources...
@@davidlewis5189 Not likely. 100%. Not only did they swarm Area 51 later but much earlier, it was mentioned that the aliens knew exactly where to hit them. In that sense, it doesn't make sense that Area 51 wasn't also hit right off the bat.

Not realy. What most dont understand is that you need to hit weakspots in order for those to work. Belt armor of an iowa is already to strong, i imagine the aliens being way harder armored given they barely took damage from the initial barage if at all.

AA missiles are designed to shoot down human-made aircraft that are fast, agile, and fragile. For instance, AMRAAM has a 44lb. high-explosive fragmentation warhead.
To bring down a behemoth mothership there, Harpoon (488 lb warhead), Maverick (up to 300 lb), Tomahawk (1000 lb) are gonna be better weapons.
Harpoon would be more suitable because it has a 500lb warhead, and can also be fired from a distance.
TBH, 500-1,000lb cruise missiles would be best; launch from 100 miles away, in relative safety, avoid getting too close to the ship or the alien fighters.
Plus, 1,000lb and 2,000lb bombs as well; they'd do more damage.

I always wondered why they were only equipped with 4 missles only. Maybe because it's standard but I dunno enough to know.
F-18 can carry more than four missiles. Assuming the opposion of giant mothership and alien fighters one could expect to carry more ordnance, yes.
movie shit.... a real fighter for an assault like that? at least 4 racks of 3 missles each. The F14 can handle those, not to mention the F16 can too. The F18? Has them as well. So whyever they didnt show them is beyond me... best part? This was around the time the F22 entered mass produced service, and she carries around 8 missles in her belly as well AND she can equip missle racks on her wings.
You can tell this movie is pure fantasy because the Active Radar Homing Missile wouldnt actually lock onto a stationary target (even if its floating above the ground) as the closing speed would be the same as the aircraft's closing speed to ground, thus the missile would be effectively notched.

Without a Doubt..When I went to the movie to see this Film..There were so many grinch worthy moment, the worst screenplay ..Make Irwin Allen’s The Swarm seem as poetic as Shakespeare ..ID4 Ripped off Every Good and Dumb Film. This was truly a dumb cartoonish film. Over Produced, Over Directed..Over Acted. Insane Plot. I love this movie. But why the hell are they using puny air to air missiles against that ship. They should have dusted off the old genie nuclear air to air missiles. But I know this movie is just a fun watch. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect
Yeah, A2A missiles against a Manhattan-sized spaceship is kind of like trying to destroy an M1 Abrams tank with pistols. However, Area 51 is a testing ground for aircraft so A2A missiles are the only available weapons. We also don’t see how the other ships weee defeated.
