Shogun is the new FX/Hulu historical drama based on James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name. Episode 10 is the series finale and Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), and Toranaga's (Hiroyuki Sanada) regroup after Mariko's (Anna Sawai) death and Ishido (Takehiro Hira) meets with the regents to plan for war. Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) and Omi may face consequences after Yabu's betrayal.

Actually he wouldn't have been able to. Blackthorne wa literally the only one there who knew English, most of the tiem he is "talking" he actually speaking in portuguese.
@@TheWorldsprayer Is Blackthorne actually speaking English or is he speaking Portugess and the Show "Dubbed" it into English for the audience. I am always confused about that part. There is no way Mariko would speak English and Portugess, she have no need to learn English even if the Portugess merchants knows English.
@@steak5599 The english we hear on the show is suppose to be portugese. They just put it as english for the viewers.
I'm SO sad it's ending. This series has been a revelation thus far.
Original is probably going to be overall better due to all the stuff cut out. Anjin was a much stronger and cooler character in 1980. This one always appears extra dimwitted.

It would be a BIG MISTAKE to continue with more seasons. They need to end it here so it has greater impact on future Japanese works. 99% chance if it continues the hype dies and it will lead to more drawn out shows in the future. Ending it here would prove that dragging out shows would not be necessary for success.
Salient point, I wholeheartedly agree... They need to allow a flower to be a flower and fall(end). Then and only then, this beautiful storytelling mastery can become best adaptation ever!
Also they’ve finished the book. If they go with another book by the author it will be a different place and time in Asia, like Tai-Pan.

This is the first trailer preview, besides the series initial trailer, I've bothered with for Shogun. Just happened across my feed and his vids are some of the best breakdowns.

Having had to say goodbye to two of my favorite characters in the last two weeks I am interested to see how it turns out. I have also not read the books or watched the predecessor so I look at the show for how it is being presented now.
The book is a masterpiece that can never be equalled by any film or series..That said, this one is its own

It's crazy how much better this show is in comparison to any other 2020s show
So far, Toranaga has sacrificed
- His most loyal best friend
- His own son
- His surrogate daughter
The only time he killed his enemies, he wasn’t even there. It was Nagakado who killed the messengers using cannons.
I would feel safer being Toranaga’s enemies than Toranaga’s allies. Thinking this way would make Yabushige look more sympathetic and less traitorous.

This show has been phenomenal! I appreciate the change in genre and storytelling. I found myself being present with this show, excepting the bite size pieces (weekly episodes). I’m hoping for a season 2, though I’ve heard it was mentioned, there aren’t any plans on that. One can still hope. Thank you for intelligent insight ❤

Material is exhausted. However if you are down to see the 1980 version, its really worth a look. I actually prefer it as this one cut out quite a bit that I really liked from the original version.
@@TiredOfApathy I can see that being the case for those are already familiar with the material. It was all new to me. I’ll definitely watch the 1980 version. I see the dvd collection is available, but I haven’t found it on a streaming service.
@@MadeUpLikeADoll You're lucky wanting to see it now. When it first hit VHS it was a whopping $300 and DVD was about the same when DVDs came out. Now its more like $30-50, which is easier to see nowadays. We bought the series for $270 way back when and it was insane but we liked it a lot.
Mariko's (the real Maria Garcia in history) descendants ended up controlling what is now Kumamoto (the black bear Kumamon that's everywhere) one of the biggest domains all the way up to the end of the shogunate until the Meiji Restoration and all the way up to the world wars.
Hosokawa Gracia ie Akechi Tama actually never met Blackthorn
@@mikegutknecht6145 True, Clavell needed a noble woman and choose her as his heroine. She was at first the only woman who knew Portuguese, Latin, and Japanese.
It's possible that the start of a battle scene that they're showing maybe Toranaga's thoughts in the prologue that wrap up everything without having to actually show the battle of Sekigahara.
I really like this show because of how complex and how much depth the primary character's have. I appreciate that this story is not about a white man coming to a 'savage' land to further his own interests but rather a man with that intent but ends up being changed by the country and their customs. Even the scene where he meets his crew and the drastic subtle changes there was done well.

Thing about the canons is. Not they don't really need him for those. At least for the few he had on him. Toronaga send those to Osaka because they do not matter in the large scale of schemes. Blackthorne (and most reviewers & reacters) have not truly realised or internalised that Blackthorn and his influence on Japan is not important (neither ot the story, nor the level of influence he actually has and so forth). That is the point.
We as audience takeing in mostly his PoV are lured to see it differently for a long time. But at some point even he realised Japan changed him, but he did not change Japan (at least not to a visible degree). There is also a reason no one of the higher Lords ever truly contemplated his constantly repeated offer to arm his ship and go after the Black ship. It is not because these Lords are abouve Privateereing (or useing Bandits etc.). Those instances happen quite often in book and show. It is because they see through him. They realise he want to use them and then sail home rich leaving them to deal with the consequences.
Yeah. Even with some Stockholm he would likely realize his freedom once out to sea getting would probably out way any debt he feels on land.

He wants stay in Japan and become Japanese, but he also felt that he doesn't belong there because he is not Japanese.

Toranaga said Blackthorne is very easy to read and manipulate, he is not really a Complex Character readers tend to think MC are.
I didn't read the book and think will be amazing if toronaga say in response: "I know" letting blackthorne in shock
I hope the Anjin and Fuji can find happiness and love somehow amongst other things but who knows? I'm good with whatever happens and really bummed out that this great series has come to a end. Always enjoy your insights and perspectives Peter. Well done!
In the book Toranaga plans for Kiri to marry Anjin san and agrees to Fujico’s sepuku.

I rlly like this show - acting, music, camera work and the story. Very immersive for me.
Soon Ghost of Sushima will come to pc as well. After watching this show it will be even more immersive.

It sounded like the portegse did try to sell the cannons but their battles and castle type made those early cannons not useful it's been 50-60 years and these newer ones have better acrusfee/range aim.
Blackthorn should hook up with Fuji at the end. Elite wife material
at the novel Shogun, fuji will do seppuku for her love and loyalty to her death husband & son. Anjin will end up with Kiko (Toranaga buys her from Gokyo Mamasan especially for Anjin

When we see one of the contenders for the throne being a second I would think it is because he is the second for his rival.
The final battle was so good. Probably one of the best battle scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie/show.

For the love of God. The book by James Clavell was written in 1975. The miniseries that preceded this was massively popular (much more popular if you consider the number of people and viewing portals that existed). This current remake is pretty darn good and basically follows the book and the original miniseries. Is everybody on this planet under 30 or something and living in a vacuum? What is the point of breaking down a trailer when what is going to happen is known with > 95 % certitude?

I disagree, Toranaga is for the greater good. Large scale civil war is the evil path and he found an alternative.

Yabushige stole the show for me. At his final moment we were able to see Toranaga for his true intentions. Did he want peace? Yes. Did he want power, above all yes. Was he willing to sacrifice a son, a right hand man and many others for both? Yes. He was no different than the chess pieces (other characters) he sacrificed for the sake of his own survival and dreams. Yabushige…he was the character you end up loving in the end.
As Fuji team i hope she get more screen time after Mariko Died.
I keep into it in the hopes that the show will pick up a little speed. The cinematography is great but there’s only so much are or so much acting you can do before it’s just a waste of timeline recreation

I think we'll see Toranaga win the war but I also think we'll see him get killed by Bushido, who sees him as being responsible for his father's death (where he had to cut his Dad's head off) and he'll see him as sending Mariko to her death....

I think I like 80s version more.
1000000% BETTER. All the different armies and their colors. Anjin being more tactful and confident. More about the priests shadiness. Toranaga was scarier as well. The love stuff was cool but mainly because Mariko was just so feminine and adorable. They took a lot out for this series and I don't believe for the better. Especially if the ending is poor with no real satisfying finish to it. If it fizzles it'll suck so bad.

Eh. If there isn't some brilliant chess move and a bloody ending then it'll be worse than a M. Night Shyamalan movie. All anticipation and then POOF a pitifully executed anti-climatic ending that leaves you feeling robbed! That would be horrible after a very good Episode 9. But hey, it can happen as we all know from the finally season of Game of Thrones. Just Eh.

The thing that lets this show down for me is the location they picked..always looks so dark and dreary,may as well filmed it in black and white. They certainly picked wrong location for this.otherwise it was very good.

This adaptation is trash, if I had never read or seen the book or good adaptation from 1980, it would have been good. But I know better.
