      Haha, I wish I were 20! But I’m definitely passionate about the '80s and love diving deep into the history and culture. Wikipedia’s great for some facts, but personal stories and memories really bring these topics to life!

    My least favorite thing was before ATMs we had to get to the bank during banking hours to get your money.

    • @NostalgicNotions
      @NostalgicNotions  20 дней назад +1

      That’s a great point! Banking before ATMs was definitely a hassle, especially if you couldn’t make it during those limited hours. It’s one of those little conveniences we might take for granted now!

      You’re right-plastic sofa covers did get their start earlier, but they definitely hung around for a while. It’s funny how some trends just keep popping up, even when they’re not the most comfortable!

    The mullet, The mullet!!! Really!!?

    • @NostalgicNotions
      @NostalgicNotions  21 день назад +1

      Haha, the mullet definitely stirs up some strong feelings! It’s one of those styles that people either loved for its boldness or couldn’t stand. It’s wild to think that it became such an iconic look. What’s your take-was it a fashion statement or a fashion mistake?

    Things I hated in the 80s-
    PORCELAIN WALL MASKS. Those utterly hideous things with airbrushed makeup.
    Lace bike shorts, bolero hats, "wearable art", bungies/scrunchies, jelly shoes, ear-cuffs, Hypercolor tees.
    Random items made in the likeness of old Hollywood celebrities(Marilyn, Bogie, James Dean, et al)
    Pigmania.
    Foul-ups, bloopers, bleepers, and blunders shows.
    Collar brooches, knee-length sweaters, asymmetrical sunglasses, hologram jewelry.
    Clove cigarettes.
    Valley girls and Valley dudes.
    Ricky Schroder.

    • @NostalgicNotions
      @NostalgicNotions  21 день назад +2

      Wow, that’s quite the list! 😄 It’s funny how some of those trends felt so big at the time but looking back, they can seem a bit… questionable, to say the least. Those porcelain wall masks with the airbrushed makeup were definitely something else! And Hypercolor tees-who thought that was a good idea? 😂 Thanks for sharing your '80s pet peeves! Anything you secretly liked, or was it all just too much?

      You’re absolutely right! Lawn darts did start in the '70s and got that safety makeover in the '80s. It’s interesting how they tried to keep the fun while reducing the danger. Thanks for the insight! Do you have any memories of playing with them?

      Ah, Dennis DeYoung’s solo work! “Desert Moon” was definitely a departure from Styx’s vibe, and I can see how its sweetness could be a bit much for some. Sounds like meeting him was quite the experience-people do change a lot over time!

      @invisableobserver 😏 Yes. You're right. I conveniently overlooked the passing of time. I apologize for sounding so over critical of his solo effort. I guess I was expecting anothet "Lady" from 10 years prior, and that couldn't happen.

      Haha, true! The mullet is definitely a fish first, but somehow it became the name for one of the wildest hairstyles of the '80s. Who knew a fish would inspire such a divisive look? 🐟💇‍♂️

    Sofa covers were more of a 70s thing as I recall....and video stores didn't really come into their own until the early 90s. And A-L-F? No buddy, it was always pronounced ALF (OWF) I've never, not even once heard it pronounced like you said it.

    • @NostalgicNotions
      @NostalgicNotions  19 дней назад +1

      Good catch! You’re right that some of these trends started earlier and just carried over into the '80s. And thanks for the pronunciation tip-ALF definitely had its own way of sticking in people’s minds, no matter how you say it!

      to me it was 84 on but it got worse in the 90's, but I am sure someone 10 years older than me would say 74, and so on, the further we look back the more wholesome things were, and as time went on everybody became more evil, especially after the mass migration of heathens into the states.

    I hated that it was still okay to smoke in restaurants in the 80s. And, the "Smoking Areas" were often right next to the non-smoking areas - like a practical joke on anyone who wanted to enjoy their meal without smelling cigarettes with every bite.

    • @NostalgicNotions
      @NostalgicNotions  20 дней назад +1

      I totally get that! It’s crazy to think how different things were back then. The so-called "Smoking Areas" did feel like a bit of a joke, especially when the smoke didn’t exactly stay in its lane. Glad we’ve come a long way from that!
