In my 4 years of crocheting, this is the first video I’ve come across where a man is teaching! I instantly subscribed lol. Love it! Crocheting is for everyone 💖
This is the best oval tutorial I could find. Easy to remember, once you’ve done a few times, video was clear with instructions across the bottom to follow if you can’t crochet as fast as Louie! 10 stars from me.
I like the way you explain this, it makes sense. It's good to know the logic behind something, so that you can apply and adapt it, like 'teaching a man to fish' rather than 'giving a man a fish'! I love it, thank you Louis! You help a lot of people, what a lovely person you must be.
Thanks so much for your video. I watched it several times before my brain caught onto the repetition. It takes me back about 57 years to when I first learned to crochet doilies without a pattern.
I'm new to the crocheting world and so I appreciate both the video and written instructions. A friend asked if I could make an oval basket, but more rounded. Yours was the only one that fit the bill. I finished a practice basket from your instruction and its gorgeous if I do say so myself. Thanks!
I really appreaciate this guide. I was trying out a lot of different tutorials and wasnt very happy with the result. This one is not only easy to follow I also really like how it turns out, and how easy it is to make the size you want.
I searched and searched and searched for a video or pattern or ANYTHING that would make an oval without it rippling or curving like for making a purse or something and I FINALLY came across this and it was clear and concise and I finally got my oval! Thank you so much, definitely subscribed to check out your other stuff. :)
tysm man, this was very easy to follow even though my adhd is so bad I get distracted lol. It was also cool to see another guy who enjoys crochet, I don't see em often!!
Thank you for creating this! Brilliant! I had no idea how to make an oval from a magic circle specifically. I hate chain ovals and a I am not sure that the chain oval would even give me the look that I am trying to create. It was easy to follow. I just started crocheting a little over 4 months ago, so I still need to learn a lot. This was perfect!
Having got used MR and making circles from there, I hated making chains, turning etc. to make the oval. This is a welcome relief. Bookmarked and subscribed!
Hello, my name is Solange, I'm Brazilian. I've been looking for a crochet base in this ellipse shape for a long time. I only found oval shape, straight on the sides. I tried to create, but I was wrong in the concept of closing careers. Spiraling like you crochet makes it so much easier. Thank you for sharing. Kisses
Thank you for explaining how to tell where the increases are and where the beginning is and that stuff. I will need a little more practice before it's easier to see it clearly, but the explanation was helpful. A lot of people skip explaining that stuff.
A hint from my crochet mentor, Rebbecca Matusek, when you thread a yarn needle, lay the yarn over the needle between the thumb and first finger. Close your space rather snugly and remove the needle. Now lay the eye of the needle horizontally over the space when the yarn should be and slide down while ever so slightly opening the space where the yarn is. This eliminates splitting yarn.
Awesome Thxs so much. I needed to make an oval for my donkey cozy cup. You nailed the teaching and I appreciated the time you took to write the rounds in the bottom of the picture. It saved me stopping and rewinding. ( I have to do that all the time and many times. ). Enjoy your day. 🧶
Oh gosh, thank you for sharing this instructional video! Finally, I found what I was looking for! All the others I looked at have that row of chains down the center, and I just think your way will look much better in the bag I am getting ready to make. For some reason the other way reminds me of a rug, haha. I subscribed
Ive found something. If you like a less extreme oval, start to increase the number of single crochets between each increase stitch (2,1,1,2,11,2) (2,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,2) and the proportion will closer to a circle. This is great for things like Boater hats which are only slightly elongated circles.
I wish I understood this better. I finally understand the video, but I'm wanting a less drastic oval. And i am trying to hard to write down the first like...10 rows so I can understand how to make is less wide and i am at a loss.
Thank you for this tutorial! You make it look so easy to make an oval based on the stitches you can see. The problem is, I can't seem to see where my increases are! (I guess I'm using a very small hook...)
Thanks! You should check out my brand new channel, ClubCrochet. ruclips.net/channel/UCf_meZSKBp1qyPV7Et_I2QQ I've been posting a lot more patterns and tutorials there :)
Omg this is the best fucking tutorial ever thank you!! I am completely new and only really know slip stiches and sc and i got it!! Now if i wanna close that oval again, how do i have to decrease in order for it to have the same form?
I can't seem to figure out the stitch pattern to continue with a 6th round. The increase "sets" always contain 8 stitches (2 1 2 1 2). Multiplied by 2 that's sixteen stitches, so the long sides in between would 13 stitches each??? By my calculations, this round should have 42 stitches and 42-16 = 26.
increasing by 6 stitches per round is generally the best way to crochet a circle flat, but it isn't perfect. A different tension might fix the problem.
I really like this and the way the first 5 rows look when done! I would like to make about 6-7 more rows than you demonstrate, but am having trouble getting the pattern straight in my mind. Can you at least give me some row counts to aim for. From what you have row 1 has 6 stitches , 2 has 12 stitches , 3 has 18, 4 has 24, and 5 has 30. From this, I assume I add 6 stitches/row. Would the next row be: sc in first 4, inc, 1,2,1,2, sc in next 10, inc, 1,2,1,2 , sc in last 6? (36 total). And the next row I increase the sides to total 12 each to make the count (40) I Or am I totally off? Thanks.
I'm trying to make a crocheted fedora and it starts out as an oval, more like an sole of a bootie, that's what it looks to me. The hat is on bobwilson123 and I've tried many times, but can't get the oval shape the way that it should lookAny suggestions that u might have for me I'd really appreciate......thanks Cat24
the pattern link doesn't work. can you give me a new link so I can read it rather than watching the video each time? I am using it to make eyes for a large ninja turtle blanket and I need to make eight of them. thanks.
I was a little confused. Does the number of increases increase each row? If so, the math on that seems wrong. For example, you could make a disk 100 miles in diameter using only 6 increases per row, every single row. Increasing the stitch counts by a factor seems like it would give you WAY too many stitches.
Can't watch the video, but I found a text version here: www.louiesloops.com/2012/10/let-them-eat-cake.html# The first round after you create the first 6 in a circle, you have some extra increases in order to ease around the "corners" created by placing the six "circular" increases on the two ends. The next round you work the increases on the ends again, but without the extra increases on the sides. After that, you work the 6 increases on the ends, every _other_ stitch, and working 3 more straight stitches (no increases) on each "side" than you did the round previously. If that doesn't make sense, try doing what it says in the text instructions and I can help later.
Louies loops, corazon no se mucho ingles, pero no hay manera de explicarlo mas, mas lento el oval? Te lo agradeceria, me interesa, muchisimas gracias, dame alguna respuesta, bye bye
This is a good pattern but it's very fast and not enough explanation for those new at making ovals. I also don't understand the pattern unless I follow the video and pause several dozen times.
I am fairly experienced at crochet and had a hard time with this. Ended up viewing another tutorial by someone else and had no problems at all. However his actual bat for the logo was great.
Hey, in case you were still looking to understand the pattern, I managed to crack it and write it down, and even expand it to go all the way to a potential round 10. I'll leave it here for you. Let me know if it's easy to follow. Rd 1: 6sc in magic ring (6) Rd 2: triple, inc, 1sc, triple, inc, 1sc (12) Rd 3: 1sc, inc, inc, inc, 3sc, inc, inc, inc, 2sc (18) Rd 4: 2sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 4sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 2sc (24) Rd 5: 3sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 7sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1s, inc, 4sc (30) Rd 6: 5sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 10sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 5sc (36) Rd 7: 7sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 13sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 6sc (42) Rd 8: 8sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 16sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 8sc (48) Rd 9: 10sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 19sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 9sc (54) Rd 10: 11sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 22sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 1sc, inc, 11sc (60) Abbreviations: triple: 3 single crochets in the same stitch (kinda like a triple increase if you will :)) inc: 2 single crochets in same stitch (the regular increase technique) 1sc: single crochet in next stitch
It means 1 single crochet in a stitch then 2 single crochet in the next stitch then 1 single crochet in the next stitch then 2 single crochet in the next stitch. Hope this helped 🙃

Yah, I've learned a lot about shooting and editing since making these videos, I'll likely be redoing a majority of them in the near future.
No problem here, I think the video is great. I much prefer this method to working around a chain.
The fact he is not using a stitch marker makes me mad because im following the entore thing exactly and i have 3 left over from round 3
