A forgotten match in many ways. Richmond supporters, during the off season, must have thought that were returning to the glory years under the coaching of a legendary player like Bartlett. Yet, they 'won' the wooden spoon in 1989
Richmond had a terrible run with injuries in 1989. No player played more than 20 of 22 games, and in their Round 20 game against Footscray where they scored just 3-11 (0-6 in the second half) in perfect conditions, the team averaged just 27 senior games each! Mitchell missed the final sixteen games, Nichols played just five, Frangalas played just seven, Egan missed the final twelve, while Weightman and Thomson also missed significant portions of the season. Nevertheless, many of the promising young players, like Hogg and Justin Pickering, did not live up to the promise shown in this game or the last thirteen games of 1988 in general.
@@guodade2239 yes, good assessment.
1988 ladder, Richmond 10th on 8 wins, 82.45%. Fitzroy 12th on 7 wins, 91.51%. Richmond were on the bottom of the ladder until round 16. Fitzroy sacked Parkin after this game.
Actually, according to the 1988 Yearbook, Parkin had announced during the preceding week that he would not be coaching Fitzroy in 1989, despite the Lions having beaten Footscray (who had won eight of their ten previous games) in Round 21.
Appreciate the upload but watermark just kills it. I am a Richmond supporter and collector. Would you be prepared to share video without watermark?
