+RJ A I thank you, thanks mike
thank you MIke, learned a lot from your videos. greetings from Baja
Hi Alberto, thank you, I appreciate it, mike
Recently cut some landscape bricks with a circular saw & a diamond blade. Soaking the brick in a 5 gallon bucket of water for just a minute, cut down on the dust a lot. Great videos sir!
+Bill Seipel good tip, thanks mike
Great job Mike! I like the grout idea. 👍😉
Thanks J , Mike
I use Muriatic Acid 50/50 in a tub big enough to submerge the tile. Depending on how much mortar and/or 'Leveler' mortar that is stuck to the back of the tile, it usually cleans the entire rear of the tile off in 24 hours or so. I would check my tile every 6 to 8 hours and wire brush off the loose mud, hose the tile off and put it back in the tub. The tile will look like new with some patience. No grinding, just very little effort on your part to get that tile restored. I recently did a dozen with excellent results. Muriatic acid has no effect on baked clay or tile face but do an initial test with one tile for kicks and giggles, but you should be fine.
Hi hitman,, I never heard that before, good tip, thanks, Mike
Hey Mike, I watch all your videos you are great, I wanted to thank you and tell you that the Portland white wash video came out great in my cellar, and well along with everything else and all the other videos the whole project as a newbie i am came out fantastic, it was a hell of a lot of work it took me 8 months which is shameful but just by myself and I also had to do the rest of the foundation all round for the insurance company, but all i learned about masonry i really appreciate your videos so thanks again.
Hi Mijemu, thats great, I hope it saved you some time and money, I appreciate it. mike
P
Thanx so much these videos RULE
Thanks Rudy, I appreciate it. mike
Nice job thanks
thanks again, mike
Hi Mike I want to say thanks for your sharing. We are surprised by your work. thanks. happy new year 2017.
Thanks, Neal, I appreciate it. mike
I once laid some quarry tiles on a reinforced concrete balcony using 1:3 cement sand mortar. 16 years of sun, rain and frost later they were still strongly bedded and set to last.
Hi Hazmat, that's a good thing, thanks mike
On some of the faster setting grout, they tell you do not use a mixure. Only mix by hand. Because the mixture creates heat and makes the grout set up in a unworkable time.
,hi marchle, I never had a problem, thanks Mike
You are great Mason I'm a bricklayer in local 1 out of Philadelphia the only thing you should tell people is the seriousness of always grinding cutting wet cutting dry will kill you it's no joke
thanks Michael, you are correct about the dry cutting,, I will start doing that, I appreciate it mike
Mike Haduck Masonry not trying to be a assailed just slot of people are gonna listen to your advise lol great Mason tho I'm on a 69 million dollar old American stone job at Villanova full bed
If you had done the original tile, would you have laid the tile out any differently?
Don't you have to wet the floor first before you put on the mortar? Good video Mike
Hi Vincent, I would say maybe a little damp, but thin set sticks well and wetting it could make a mess, thanks mike
Great video Sir. I’m in a process removing tiles in my kitchen, living room, hallway, and 2 bathrooms. I’m planning to retiles, but I’m not understanding how to lay out chalked line stuff. Do you have any advice that is easy to understand for first time DIY myself. I do watch other videos, but still can’t get it. Please help. Thanks a lot SIR.
Hi rain, I would just lay out everything dry first, step back and take a good look at it and mark were the tiles are before you lay it, , do a closet first or something that no one will see until you get the hang of it, I hope it helps thanks mike
My 2nd question is its great u teaching to make own grout..I will do that..but for wet area like toilets will the sand & portland mix b strong enough?
Hi Alex, again all I can say is as far as my work goes, I never had a call back, every situation is different and you got to take it as it comes, experience is usually what dictates, thanks mike
Hi Mike, some say need to apply tinset on floor & tile for proper install ..ur comments pls
Hi Alex, I never had a call back, so I would say it all come down to common sense, thanks mike
Good pointers Mike. Question have about 650sq ft of PAINTED basement floor. I need to tile it soon, but don't feel like striping it down to the bare concrete. Can I just do it over the paint or will I have problems??
Hi Jon, I went over linoleum, plywood, paint etc etc etc, every situation is a bit different, I would do a test and see what happens before you do the whole thing. get a peace, lay it wait a couple days and see what happens, I hope it helps thanks mike
just wondering, what type of tiles (model, maker) did you use in the video - i have similar ones and need to find where to buy more. many thanks!
Hi Yue, I am not sure, some were left over and others a tile supply company, but after so many years they stop making them, Thanks mike
How about a tile floor on concrete in the shower ? Also tile on concrete walls in the shower ? My walls are concrete blocks with a surface bonding cement over them. What would be the best way to tile this shower ?
Hi Charlie, I don’t do a lot of that, just mostly tile over concrete floors, I appreciate it, Mike
By putting in the straight edge around the wall for the vertical tiles isn't he putting screws in water proofing if there is ?
Hi Kaveman, I am not sure, but he never gets call backs, and I don’t think it is where the shower is, thanks, mike
Don't you find spreading mortar on dry plywood sucks all the moisture out of your mix? My understanding is all of the newer mortars have polymer additives to improve bonding between the substrate and tile.
+Silverhorn2 you know, the only thing I can say is after doing it for all these years, I could say I seen it "almost" all. and all these new products are just take offs of old school to charge more money for basically the same thing, so as it may be, nothing today is built to last more than 30 years before you replace it. if your right it is only temporary, life is life, thanks , mike
how do make everything "dry" fit if it against a 90° angle wall?
Hi Knight, same as any, cut it first, mike
Mike what do I do if the concrete floor is not perfectly level?
Hi most times I build it up with the thin set the day before, then just go on top, everything depends on how bad and where it is, thanks, Mike
Why do you not use a notched trowel? I have tiled professionally in the past and always used a notched trowel (and back buttered but you already responded to that).
Hi J , whatever works, I have never had a callback, thanks, mike
J Freeman never got pay to what joke
Thanks. Michael Moore lays tile.
??????
There is a space with no mortar...will this not cause a problem? ...crack potential? Are you using a unmodified mortar?
Hi Deein, I never had a problem on concrete , it is nothing or cement board, I forget what I used there but many times a fast drying mortar and finish it all in one day, every job is different, thanks mike
Mike Haduck .juat like here in UAE .we reolace floor tiles in the bathrooms.finish in one day.removing the old floor tiles reconcreting the floor .install new tiles .grouting and cleaning.
No back buttering done? You got to do that! Won't last long at all on PA!
Hi Logan , inside job I never had a callback, I do not do tile on outside floors in pa, thanks mike
You don't back butter the tiles!? I'm a tile setter too,...and had to repair too many that didn't bond properly to the thinset because they were not back buttered.
after so many years , I can tell if it is needed and I did do it on part 1. God bless. Mike
Thanks Mike. I learned a lot from your videos. All the best. Bob.
thanks, bob appreciate it. mike
Hi Mike , can you make a mortar for tiles from Portland too?
I think you have to go with what is recommended for any certain tile, because all tiles are different, and require different adhesive’s, thanks Mike
Mike Haduck Masonry what if the tile is ceramic ? Can a mortar from Portland and sand be made ?
Dealing with tile is a whole different world than bricks and blocks and stones tiles usually have a glue type mastic cement that is made for it, i used my own Portland mix for a Spanish tile that was an inch thick but like I said tile don’t last outside here in my neck of the woods, so you got ask the tile store what they recommend for each type of tile, I hope it helps thanks Mike
Mike Haduck Masonry tiling a bathroom with normal ceramic tile with Portland mortar ?
Great stuff but was that film bad.
Thanks Denis, Mike
is it possible to do some plumbing videos?
+Niki Isufi I am mostly masonry, but thanks, mike
Hey there, quick question. I'd doing a SMALL bathroom and I'm using travertine stone tiles, is there anything I should be concerned about?
I think everything depends, and a lot depends on the product, hard question to answer, thanks mike
how come you didn't wet it and back butter the tiles??
Hi Logan, I guess my answer is it would make a mess and there would be too much butter on the tiles, if I hit a low spot or some change then it would be different, thanks mike
Never wet it first with tile adhesive it will not stick
No spacers?or just eyeball it.
+PAUL DINEHART when I lay the tiles out dry, I usually use spacers but sometimes you got to stretch or use a smaller joint, everything depends, that's why laying it out dry will give you the picture, I hope it helps, thanks mike
No leveler🤔?
Level? Everything goes towards the drain, thanks mike
Hey masons, clean up after yourselves! I don’t know how many hundreds of man hours I have paid for to remove excess mortar where the bottom row meets the slab, or just mortar dropped on the slab and left. Imagine if flooring installers left glue or tile mud all over your walls and you had to clean it off. Pisses me off. Some crews do clean up after themselves, but some don’t. Think about someone besides yourself!
Thanks Chris, I agree, Mike
Gone fail wanna be pro no way
Hi Marco, I have never had a callback, thanks Mike
Hi Mike. Doesn't tile on wood crack the tile when the wood flexes?
Hi Bob they usually use a underlayment, Mike
