Reliving The War takes a look at the "Monday Night War" era of professional wrestling. With WCW Nitro and WWF Raw is War airing at the same time every Monday night, fans had to make a choice and decide which show they would watch. The WWF and WCW tried to put on the best events possible and a TV ratings battle would take place, resulting in the most memorable time periods in pro wrestling history.
It's the night after the 1998 Royal Rumble and Mike Tyson is on Raw. Vince McMahon has a big announcement to make regarding Tyson but the announcement gets interrupted by Stone Cold Steve Austin. Also on Raw D-Generation X try to find The Undertaker and the faction has a BBQ in the middle of the ring.
On WCW Nitro everyone gets ready for the 1998 Souled Out PPV taking place later in the week. Macho Man Randy Savage continues to have problems with the nWo and it looks like thing are going to boil over, Bret Hart and Ric Flair have an in-ring meeting before their big PPV match, and Hollywood Hogan wrestles The Giant in the main event.

I don't think many people really appreciate how academic this series actually is. This would be a perfect series to cite in a history paper on wrestling.
It's more than just a daft wrestling show , it's THE best way to "relive" or just experience this truly iconic legendary period in wrestling
And his little touches are what do it... like Alex Wright's big bratwurst or constant ripping on Glacier.
@@hazardtriplezero Forget Glacier, it's about Steve Muhfuckin Blackman now!
Facts and we get our own look and give our own opinions on the Monday night wars instead of what WWE decided happened and how important or unimportant it was
@@ahmadceasar5484 History from the source is usually propaganda. Not, to say, you can enjoy WWF produced videos yet they are entertainment not fact.
Young fans have no idea how big the Tyson and Austin confrontation was. It was huge! It made the Irish news and the next day in school, people who had little interest in Wrestling since the 80s were coming up to me talking about it. It really made the WWF interesting again.
Its always interesting hearing from people in other countries. I never imagined how big these tji gs were globally
I remember it being featured on CNN.
@@lm4585 it was Tyson dude. The entire 90's was like this. I think that's something he should talk about more on his podcast. Maybe have Steve Austin come on for an episode around Wrestlemani s.
It was basically the 2 biggest stars in the world. I'll never forget it.
@@kylelongwar356 The Mania XIV event is what was about to make Stone Cold in tint. Tyson was a truly a massive star, everywhere he went and everything he did got coverage on tv, often on mainstream news programming. Steve would start getting that treatment towards the beginning of 99.
"No not the Amazing French Canadians, the Quebecers..."
I've been waiting like six months to mark out for that line. So happy lol
The pause and laughter before it was *chef's kiss*
Throwing in the Saturday Wright Fever bit in the middle of the DX promo is complete gold. I couldn't stop laughing 🤣
There was the Japanese nWo there should have been the European DX
The classic Jim Ross shouting "Austin and Tyson" will always be in my head when I see this
This was the moment WWF gained mainstream popularity again. The ball kept rolling from there. It’s a good job Tyson was professional all through this. Can you imagine the embarrassment to the WWF and Austin if Tyson decided to shoot on Austin.
The Fall of Ahmed Johnson was Crazy. I know injuries never helped but in '96 he was being primed as Potential future champion,by '98 he was finished.
And it won't get better once he reappears in WCW...
@@arciks11 oh lord 🤦🏾♂️
Ahmed "buried" himself since his kidney injury.
“Im not telling Scott Steiner he’s wrong”
Backstage booking conversation (probably).
Way to go Amy & Justin, you both have the jam 👍🏻
Dude I literally spit my drink out when you worked the Bret Hart "HE'S AN ANIMAL" clip. Thanks for making my week every week man.
I legit clipped dat scene when it first came out on Relivin the WaR 🤣
My brother in law remembers being at Raw that week and seeing Tyson and Austin erupt. Crazy, but man, 1998 was the year of Stone Cold in a lot of ways.
Nah, 1998 belonged to one man and one man alone - Da Man! Goldberg.
Fun Fact: Mike Tyson actually wanted to be a Wrestler but once he saw the traveling schedule of pro wrestlers, he decided to become a boxer.
Plus he probably looked at what they get money wise and he could make so much more 🤑
Wrestling money is pocket change compared to money made from doing a few big fights in boxing.
He made hbk s career in like 3 fights maybe less in his prime
Im not so sure of that though he might have been a wrestling fan but it had nothing to do with money. He was a troubled kid with a sick mom and a dad who wasn't there. By the time he was 13 he had a rap sheet 38 crimes long. While he was in Juvi a detention officer took him under his wing and recognized his talent at fighting. He trained him a bit and introduced him to legendary boxing trainer Cus D'Amato.
Cus took him in like he was his own kid and when Tysons mom died Cus outright adopted him. Cus was tough but fair with him and did his best to keep him on the straight and narrow.
He had his first professional boxing match at 18 and the rest is history. He was wrapped up so quickly in the boxing world I'm not sure he ever really had time to think it through or choose a profession.
His profession was chosen by the time he was 13. He was either going to make some money boxing or die poor boxing but boxing was his only outlet to the streets.

Man we just started 1998 here in Reliving the War but already miss 1997 it was such a good year
Your love of Alex Wright is very endearing, on par with Marky Ds hatred of Jeff Jarrett.
Rick Martell? Marty Jannetty? Tatanka? The Mega Powers feuding? This Nitro feels like watching Summer Slam 1992
Yess .. we are Literally sitting on the edge of the attitude era… Thank you wrestling bios… This is going to be so great
We've been in the attitude Era for a few weeks
@@reddhead2948 TBF I never counted The last bets with Shawn Michaels as a part of the attitude era .. I may be in the minority… But when Austin beat Michael’s for me that was the beginning!
no vince literally announced it on raw it officially started after survivor series 97
@@marcusgray6501 for me it didn't start till stone cold steve austin got hit with a spinning piledriver from Zangief.....man that was truly the beginning!

The "beady eyes" line is such a classic
“This was worse than shawn michaels breaking up with marty jannetty” 🤣🤣🤣
Bradshaw didn't even have a window to escape through!
With this Tyson-Austin segment, headlines in every sports section around the world and on local & national newscasts made it their top story.
Ya ruined it!!!ya ruined it!!!!!
And just like that WWF was mainstream popular again. That was one of the differences between WWFs booking and WCWs. WWF knew what they had to do to become popular in the mainstream. While WCW had tried with various celebrities but failed, especially outside of the states.
@@martynodonnell8467 but they didn't beat them in the ratings yet

JR’s call on the Austin vs Tyson confrontation: “Tyson and Austin, Tyson and Austin”
The ending of Starcade should've been the genesis of a Hogan vs Hart ppv match. The storyline was there, flair vs hart was random.
Nah, sorry but Bret doesn't just get to come in and take the main event spot in WCW when there were many in the queue ahead of him. His time would come - Bret is one of only nine WCW Triple Crown Champions and had an amazing run with the company - but he had to wait his turn.
Watching the BBQ segment with DX just makes HHH being the head guy at WWE now even better.
29:53 Such irony that a few years later, The Rock says he remembers Chris Jericho being down South beating up a jabroni named Juventud that led to shots being fired as Juventud started his mockery of Rock gimmick, and then in 2001 when Rock suspects Jericho on being the defector to the Alliance by claiming while he was main eventing in WWF, Jericho was in WCW having matches with Juventud Guerrera as everyone in the background laughed, but here's Rock in action at the same time as Jericho vs Juvi
Hey yo you're making history with this wrestling history and I love it to relive something that we all love a great wrestling War
That catch by Mortis on Booker was awesome.
Fun Fact: This was the year I started watching Wrestling....My first show was a WCW Nitro episode from this year. My first match I saw......Disco Inferno.
Fun facts are usually stuff people actually care about..

I am so linked with this series, hands down the best weekly show on RUclips. Thank you for all you do Ryan, I've said it 1,000 times in your comment section but I respect you Bio-Man.
🌬🥒
Jk i agree 10,000%
"You got your lil' beedy eyes, locked on to the eyes, of THE-WORLD'S-TOUGHEST-SON-OF-A-B!TCH"..I will never forget that. Everybody was talkin' about that Tuesday morning in Highschool. That Tyson Austin stand off was EPIC!!!!!!! And the electricity in that stadium comin' through the TV's was unreal ⚡⚡⚡
Another awesome upload from the wrestling channel on the planet with the most jam.
The Tyson Austin angle was one of the most important moments in the “war”. It started the swing of momentum back to WWF and where as WCW were still running with the same old NWO on top. WWF were going from strength to strength. Gaining mainstream, worldwide attention. WCW had tried to gain mainstream attention in the past, with celebrities very few people outside of the states cared about, however failed. I think from this week on WWF are going to start running away with the week to week comparison and before long will be back on top in the ratings, leaving WCW for dust.
Can you imagine in an alternative play of events. Tyson not playing along. Taking offence to Austin and knocking him out? How embarrassing would that have been to Austin and the WWF and how would that have effected things moving forward?
Also during 97 Shamrock called Tyson out and never got a reply. It never gets mentioned. However at this time both men were in the same company at the same time. I wonder what would have happened if it was given a green light and we got a shoot fight between Shamrock and Tyson?
The screen grabs of hilarious faces the wrestlers make are the most underrated part of this show.
Oh yes, the Selland Arena, in my hometown. I remember seeing on the local news about Tyson being in town for Raw. It was a huge deal
Thank you so much for everything! It could be so simple to make this comment on every video you make. But I just feel like you are outstanding at everything that you do with this channel. I honestly will go back and start from episode one when this series comes to an end just to go through it all over again.
💯💯💯💯
23:18 Fantastic take here. Great example of why the common "Starrcade 97 was the beginning of the end" narrative is just flat-out wrong. WCW was still getting tremendous heat all up and down the card in the early months of 1998.
Their death was more of a slow one. People prefer quick and simple hot takes over nuance, but the truth is that they made a series of mistakes in late 1998 and early 1999 that led to the company's downfall.
In fact, if there was any one thing that hurt the company tremendously in late 97/early 98, it was probably the creation of Thunder. The company was too much of a mess to pull off 5 hours of primetime programming on a weekly basis. Thunder hurt the product way more than the outcome of Sting/Hogan at Starrcade.
Edit: wow, apparently great minds think alike because you covered that right after the Sting save. Nice!
Well, a lot of those booking mistakes in late 1998 and early 1999 mirrored the failure of Starrcade. Squandering long term booking decisions, backstage politics, etc.
@@exilhamburger4802 Bischoff is so obessed with ratings by this point.
I love this series so much. Thank you for taking me back to my childhood.
For a kid who was only born in 97 and missed all of this going back with this series is great to relive all the historic moments from the Monday Night Wars without having to actually watch them all.
I personally wonder if Eric was beginning to get nervous at this point. The ratings gap was shrinking and Tyson's arrival was a big cue for mainstream attention. WWF felt like they were just getting more and more momentum.
Eric was obsessed with ratings
Tyson shoving Austin was such a huge moment back in the day
Man, I don't know your name or what you look like. But you're my brother, brother! I love reliving the war. Been watching every episode since EP.01. I haven't missed a single episode. 98 was my favorite year too.
His first name is Ryan
Love seeing this pop up in my feed. Always looking forward to the next episode.
20:18 best moment of this week's Reliving The War
My favorite series to keep up with on RUclips! Thanks for the effort and passion you put into this series
I am a Quebecer 😁 Its nice to see PCO is still active today and kicking lots of ass. His match vs Gunther is such a hard hitting match!
I just wanted to thank Wrestling Bios for making these videos. I like them so much! Reliving the War has become my favorite TV so to speak.
I was at the Superdome for this Nitro - a fun part of this was some of the wrestlers locker rooms were on the opposite side of the Dome from where the entrance was. There used to be a large gap between the 1st deck stands and the concourse so when crossing between the two you could see below and heckle wrestlers walking back and forth. Went to the bathroom during a commercial break and Eddie was walking to the back - he was getting heckled big time! Could tell he loved it too, giving people the finger with a smile on his face.
I was there that night also. I'll never forget it I had such a blast
With everything going on in WWE and AEW right now the timing of your Reliving The War series and what's going on in WCW and WWF at this point is oddly fitting to what's going on right now.
Took a while but im now finally caught up, and eagerly await each episode!!!
Best channel on RUclips by far.
Love me some Marty Jeanette. He was always a great worker. He got me hollering at the computer 🔥
I always get pumped for this series it always makes me ready for the weekend
I was at the WCW event in New Orleans! Man I had a good time! Thanks for Doing this every week.

Thank you for this channel Wrestling Bios! Keep up the good work
that austin vs tyson segment is hands down better than anything else on the video < point Raw!
Flynn has a top 5 mullet. That thing is MAJESTIC.
Man, I actually hunt these videos down each day… soooooo good. Keep it up mate
I look forward to these every thursday. Love the videos and your hard work. Keep it up!
"little suckas " lol ! You always have hilarious names for Mr . Johnsons two fellas ! Cracks me up !
Dude... let Me tell you how much I appreciate your work. It takes so much time, effort, and dedication to make these masterpieces and here you are dishing em out like hot cakes. Great work My man just wanted to show My gratitude and appreciation. 💯🙌
Always look at Thursday just for this. Grew up watching Jim Crockett promotions. Was a teenager when this happened. Thank you for bringing me back to a better and simpler time
Love Rick Martel. Knowing the way that this run ends for him makes it so bittersweet seeing how good most of his matches are before that moment.
Owen would have gone "down south," if Vince wasn't obsessed with killing him to really "stick it" to Bret since Bret wouldn't let him stick it to him the way Shawn let Vince stick it to him.
Marty was brought in to be a high profile, high ability (especially at selling), well liked jobber. Yes WCW had a stacked roster, but they really didn't have a lot of guys who they could use as Jobbers that would actually mean something when he put them over. They probably should have given him a couple of wins against local talent types so that he wouldn't be a strict jobber and not lose every match.
It's okay, the Quebecers might not be French-Canadians anymore, but they are still amazing. That's a really weird outcome. Mick Foley was a huge ascending star.
Not only was Tyson a wrestling fan growing up, he grew up in New York, so he was a WWF fan, before the national expansion.
The Steiners break up kind of soon, but I'm pretty sure it's after The Outsiders split, which kind of overshadows it. I would have booked it to happen in the opposite order, because the Outsiders split leads directly to the Wolfpack versus Hollywood feud.
Thank you again for your weekly work my friend.
Thanks for the Saturday wright fever! Good stuff
Yes! The Quebecers! I’m so glad you did it! I’ve been so looking forward to that moment!
This is their comeback for 4 years
My favorite show on RUclips, well done.
"YOU RUINED IT YOU RUINED IT DAMNIT YOU RUINED IT YOU SOB"-Vince McMahon to Stone Cold
I can’t say how much I look forward to your posts. Thank you for all you’ve been doing. Side note: I miss Saturday Wright Fever too
People think it was Tyson on RAW that shifted the Monday Night Wars to WWF taking the lead. It's possible. But in actuality it was WCW not booking Alex Wright on Nitro for like 8 weeks straight.
you're still improving and getting more confident video by video, it's been awesome to be a part of your growth and this is by far the best series I've watched probably about anything, not just wrestling.
Bro I didn't even realize it was Thursday. Hell of a long day so glad to have this while I make dinner.
Seriously you're the best
Supplies ready! Another great episode Ryan! I watched all your videos this week! Keep it up brother!
Man that "he's an animal" bit ROFL!! And trying that link you did by adding Saturday Wright Fever, Classic! Loved this ep and the confrontation between Tyson and Austin.
Thursday night now is almost as good as Mondays in the mid to late nineties.
Omfg... I've just now, after all these episodes, noticed the design of Saturday Wright fever! haaaahahaaa outstanding!! 20:19
Man, this is the time when Shawn couldn't get up the next morning. The struggle he was having right now must have been immense
He's on pills
I was there in the New Orleans Louisiana Superdome that night. I can't believe I get to see this again
I wonder how many times Michaels had to turn to the Fanny pack to get through this episode.
I'm excited to see your review of Souled Out. It was the only PPV I have ever been to. I was lucky enough to be 4th row on the floor. Macho and Lex spilled into the crowd about 10 feet from me. Plus seeing the Giant dumped on his head from a botched Nash powerbomb. The ref did the injury signal right away. Plus, Miss Elizabeth is gorgeous in person.

A Relieving the War episode on my Birthday, awesome stuff as always, love the series and it's ongoing little gags, I hope "He must be good at it" becomes a recurring joke for when You Suck chants happen :D

Great video 👏👌👍 . I can't wait to reliving the war ever week , hell all your uploads are great ! Keep it up 💪💪
just watched your hulk hogan vs the rock wrestlemania breakdown and i come back to youtube to see this just released !! LETS GOOOOOO
If only Jerry Flynn came over to WWE after the WCW buyout.
Jerry Flynn and Steve Blackman would have been the best tag team ever or the best feud ever.
Don't forget meng him and Blackman would have been awesome tag team
“Which does give me hope that the Nitro main event may have a clean finish.”
Nitro clean finish is an oxymoron
I’ve said it so many times on here, but I have to say it again. Thank you so much for these!!!!
I've never been so happy for a match to not end in a DQ. Not sure what I would do with my Thursday evenings without reliving the war.
Booker having his little suckas smash has become my favorite iteration of that joke.
I still do my best “You ruined it!” anytime I mess something up
Saturday Wright Fever gets me every time. HAHAHA
I love these videos for the history/memory lane aspect but dude, you're so funny and make these videos so entertaining! 😂 Can't imagine my Thursday's without them! ❤
Not doing mentally well right now, and I appreciate you grinding, keeping my ass somewhat sane 🤙
12:18 You were waiting to say it and we have been waiting to hear it.
That pause before he read "The Quebecers" made me ugly chuckle.
this made my day thanks!
Best part of the week. I don't want it to end
Don't worry. We've still got a good 3 years to go!
I don't watch much TV, so I don't have a lot to look forward to during the week, but best believe every Thursday I make it mandatory to watch reliving the war. Probably my favorite series anywhere
Great episode like always👍
