sometimes i just imagine explaining the 'wonyoung eating strawberry scandal' to a non-kpop-fan and burst out laughing. like i don't think many kpop fans realise how chronically online they are

I did this! It was at lunch a while ago and me and my friend were listening to Ive, she really liked the music so I started explaining who each of the members were and I was explaining all the hate Wonyoung gets to her and my other friends at the lunch table who had been listening and they all looked at me like I was insane. I showed them I wasn’t making it up and they were flabbergasted.

Another reason why I think people get so triggered by her existence: she doesn't make herself smaller, in fact, she takes up space. As a woman who has been indirectly and directly told by society to keep my head low and has taught me (and all of us) to hate myself in order to capitalize out of that and benefit the patriarchy, I always make myself smaller in the presence of others and feel extremely bad when I think I bothered someone (even if that wasn't the case). If you recall back to previous kpop scandals involving female idols (many of them being about dumb stuff), you can tell how most of the the girls either look sad or ashamed on their first public appearance (heads low and all), delete all their socials or even go on a full length hiatus after it. But Wonyoung, even though she is without a doubt the most hated idol at the moment (hated for literally existing because so far she has done nothing wrong that the public knows of), always keeps her head high. Always. She does not look sad, or affected by all the hate she gets (of course that is what she lets us see, no one could ever know how a person actually feels inside). Instead of making herself smaller, she poses, she smiles, she blows kisses, she takes up space and her well deserved center position. She always talks about how much she loves being herself. And that makes people even angrier. It is as if like they wanted to see her cry or hurt and then they'd show a little mercy, but she never breaks in front of the cameras, so they hate her even more for that. Bringing a woman down (a literal teenager in this case but you guys get the point), wanting a woman to suffer for just existing instead of admiring her sense of self worth and the way she carries herself at such a young age... Misogyny. Old and pure misogyny. I am so tired of seeing people on the internet praise and literally melt when a male idol does the same thing, and then call her all sorts of names for doing it, even talking about how much they would like to hit her or even worse. The double standard. It is sad and disgusting.

When Sulli passed away years ago I prayed that haters would became more aware of their actions and that this could finally stop, so innocent idols could have a decent life and we would see no more tragedies. It makes me so so sad to see Wonyoung passing thru all of this, even tho she seems strong, she shouldn't have to endure any of this. Honestly when people will learn? I just hope nothing really bad happens again.
It’s so sad to say, but as long as people have a mask to hide behind (the internet) they will do and say what they want because there will be no major consequences for them. They might get sued or get their accounts taken down but that won’t take away the pain they made the idols feel or in even more serious cases bring back the idol that we’ve lost.
some of us do learn from our mistakes (i wasn't there for sulli but i was one of the ppl who wanted garam out of le sserafim until serenes showed me proof of her innocence before she got kicked out so i learned my lesson) but the problem is there isn't enough of us learning from these idols who are falsely accused and a lot of ppl became stans after sulli took her own life so they refuse to learn from smth they haven't personally witnessed bc of this i don't think the majority of kpop stans will ever learn i mean yeah if another idol like wonyoung with a massive hate train takes their own life (i don't wanna say wonyoung bc she doesn't seem to care that much so i doubt she'd do it herself) MAYBE kpop stans would learn but there's no guarantee plus new stans will still come and be just as toxic or more toxic so i think it's just a vicious cycle at this point

The person who confessed they enjoyed seeing Wonyoung getting hate because of how they feel about her will always confirm my theory that Jealousy is a VERY bad disease in the Kpop fandom.
Funny enough, before Wonyoung had the interview with Lee Youngji & her going semi-viral for saying she didn't care about what others said. People still loved her but I feel like as soon as she said that, people felt she got too big for her shoes & felt the need to put her in her place. Just a month or two later, the whole "Wonyoung & Friends" drama began & would be the start of a very, very long hate train that is infamous to many Kpop fans (Dives & non-Dives alike).
People began to focus on how differently dressed she was from the members & her centre parts. It kind of died down after a few months until the Strawberry incident took it to a whole other level.

It's infuriating how other fandoms will use Wonyoung bowing to praise their fave. When pointing out that Wonyoung did in fact bow kpop stans then go on to say a 15-degree now isn't enough. “LOOK Minji bowed a whole 90 degrees, Wonyoung could never.” In all my years of being into kpop, I have never seen people nitpick on how far an idol bows.

Yess!!! And it's sick that people say IVE are just coworkers because they don't showcase their friendship as much as other groups. But, they definitely have a genuine friendship and love for eachother. When I watch reality shows of I've, they're so friendly and kind to eachother. They may not be as chaotic as other girl groups, but that doesn't mean they're not besties.

As a teen I was constantly put down by my “friends” for being girlie.. and even called an airhead by one. I grew up and grew confident, and STILL GIRLIE AF (and excited for the Barbie movie)
It doesn’t make anyone dumb just by liking pink and it doesn’t make you superior because you like heavy stuff. Everyone is free to like what they like! I would never think less of others just because they like something different than I do. that’s what makes them who they are and that’s great!

Personally, I don't think the source of the dislike is unfounded, not justified though, in a couple of years when she's no longer the IT girl, Wonyoung will mature and grow up, act less cute, less camera conscious, less of all that, so many idols go through that phase where they get hate for fabricating everything for the camera then settling into becoming normal-ish, they even talk about it,
I can't imagine anyone being normal after being held on a pedestal their entire existence, not having a normal childhood, teenagehood, it's sad almost, a lot of these famous people are stunted, mental and emotional growth wise,.
I don't think humans were built to be famous, but that's a whole other can of worms. I have never defended any idols this much because I never wanted to give those shitty haters attention. But the amount of hate wonyoung was getting made me a wonny defender. I feel more close to her especially the fact the she was born the same year as mine and I can't even imagine being in her shoes.

I'm not even a fan of her in particular (though I do like Ive's music and follow them all), but I've also been defending her because I honestly think the way people treat her is too unfair. In my case I'm not her age, what I am is almost 10 years older, so just like Cheryl at the end of the day I see a teenage girl working so hard to be respected in a very hostile industry that, despite being overall successful, is getting an amount of hate she should not be dealing with for basically breathing at this point. Everything she does is scrutinized and vilified like she's some kind of manipulative evil witch instead of a young girl being overly conscious of her own image.
I'm honestly trying to understand where all this insanity comes from and I believe it stems from some stans inability to separate art from artist. Most interactions that stans have with Wonyoung are when she's on stage performing, and her persona is.... I won't lie... hard to watch (same with Leeso). The amount of winks, lip bites, head tilts, hair flips, nose scrunches, eyebrow raises... it gets to a point where it's very uncomfortable to look at. But since I'm an older kpop stan, I understand that these girls are young, they're learning how to put on a good performance, and odds are their company is training them to be THAT "greasy" with the camera. I don't recall Wonyoung ever acting that greasy on camera in Iz*one.
Kpop stans then see that greasy, over-acting performance (that sort of aims to "steal" the spotlight) and assume that's who she actually is when she's NOT on camera. Plus add on a massive, stinky pile of jealousy because she's super pretty and successful at such a young age, and you've got a recipe for malicious, unapologetic hatred aimed at her.

I can't understand why they bully her, she seems like a kind and cute girl who works really hard in almost all the videos.
@@NinjaKittkatt I agree, I think her sort of princessy vibe that people find cringy some times is part of a curated image she practices and not like her natural self. As an MC, she's very elegant and poised and you can tell she cares a lot about how she speaks and moves and tries to give the perfect image all the time because she's aware people would judge her. If anything, the criticism she gets will just compel her to act less and less relaxed and natural every time. People are just hating her for being good at what she's expected to do.

Exactly!!! Wonyoung is older and has been in the industry longer than some of these kpop idols, so it makes senese for her to bow lower than her younger/less expirienced collegues. Mostly in korean culture, the older person is expected to bow first, but the younger person is expected to bow lower out of respect!

It's always the girliest, prettiest and most popular girl in the group that gets the most hate. Kpop stans can't fathom the idea that a girl can be pretty, successful AND kind. I have never seen stays getting mad at it but I have seen them make jokes about it . Talking from my experience on RUclips. I am so happy I don't have Twitter cuz its like such a toxic app. I am a stay and I was shocked when I found out even Moas are toxic on twitter. I knew about stays being toxic cuz I saw it on youtube too but Moas being toxic on there just blew me away cuz they are like the sweetest and funniest fandom I know.

i'm actually starting to be fan of wonyoung because of all the time i've spent defending her. before I wasn't necessarily a fan of her but I felt the need to defend her because I thought the hate she was receiving was so vile and evil. but, in the process I've noticed how talented as a performer she is, that girl knows EXACTLY how to use her face. she's one of the only 4th gen artists that can really *preform*. obviously none of 4th gen can sing live but at least she's actually entertaining on stage vrs. how a lot of other 4th gen idols kinda just look like they don't wanna be there.

I haven't watched the video yet, but Jang Wonyoung is so freaking admirable. She's been in the industry for so long already, faced SO MUCH, and still has so much life left to keep achieving anything she wants.
With that being said, I think she's also a very sad example of the toxicity of the industry. It doesn't matter what she does, or what she doesn't do, she gets hate for simply being beautiful and popular. I do think she's too thin, but that's not her fault. She works so hard that I doubt she has time to eat huge meals, let alone the public pressure to always look perfect. Plus she's a supermodel now, and when have they ever been allowed to eat?

starship and ive are the first ones to reap the benefits of what produce was made for. these companies didn’t send them on there for fun, it was to promote trainees and ultimately the companies upcoming group. ive is popular because of the work yujin and wonyoung put in, and because the non-izone members were likeable enough. especially in eleven era annyeongz were getting invited to shows and radios to promote ive. and guess what?! IT WORKED. despite coming from a medium sized company, they are one of the top 4th gen groups. not only did they get 3 consecutive hits but the non izone members have built stable fanbase for themselves. rei alone has 3 brand deals which is unheard of for a rookie. people don’t realize that the nonizone members have it better than rookie wonyo and yujin in terms of promotion and solo jobs since they’re so obsessed with painting them as victims. it’s just so sad and annoying to see because at this point they’re dismissing their hard work??? gaeul doesn’t get lines there fake outrage, she gets them and suddenly it’s not enough and wonyoung has too many. i have yet to see these kpop fans genuinely praise the non-iz members for their skill without there being some shade attached to it.

In all the interviews of Wonyoung that I’ve watched she always seemed like such a sweet bubbly person, especially that one with Lee Youngji. However, whenever I see a short/ tiktok of her they often genuinely did make her seem like a bad person, but then when I went to watch the full footage (‘cause you know, never take anything at face value) these clips are most often taken wildly out of context and clipped to paint her in a bad light.
I just do not understand how it can bring people satisfaction to maliciously bring somebody else down and spread false perceptions of them just for the sake of clicks and views. It’s incredibly upsetting.
Also about her weight, yes, she is most certainly dangerously underweight, but so are other members of IVE too. I’m concerned for all of them, yet you won’t find me commenting about it under every video of theirs. The amount of skinny shaming comments badly disguised as “concern” is disgusting. I think it also influences a lot that most new fans nowadays are children. Like, literal children 12-16 yr old unsupervised on platforms like twitter or tiktok. They can’t manage or analyze their emotions like adults. If they’re jealous, their brain will do backflips and parkour to proove their hatred and jealousy is valid. If they see an adult fan sh!tting on an idol, they can’t critically analyze if it’s true or not, and most probably will take it as truth and roll with it. This new kpop landscape honestly scares me. It’s allowing children to be bvllies in platforms that encourage it rather than condemn it, and only the gods know if they bring that to their real lives.

It’s mainly her femininity that makes people upset imo. A lot of women nowadays are miniature versions of men and are angry that women like Wonyoung are very feminine both in looks and personality and are what guys actually want in relationships. I don't get why everyone is so pissed at Wonyoung for merely trying to survive and make bread. She HAS to put on the persona because she has to SURVIVE in such a harsh industry and instead of you mother fuckers to understand this, you all butt your heads together and try to attack a young girl for her survival.
I wouldn't attribute her professionalism and the way she acts to JUST confidence but more so of the standard she has to keep up. I also don't believe that she is "breaking the industry" or "changing the game", she's just in it and doing what she can to survive. Trying to claim that she is "perfect" is also a dehumanizing way of speaking about her, because it again tries to put her on "unhuman" territory (as a one-off compliment it is fine though)
I also believe the "jealousy" of KPOP stans is by design, it is not a flaw in the system. KPOP has to push idols to the bounds of being people who are "unhuman" and they HAVE to make people jealous and insecure. People become enraged that they can't be her, and they never will be, or they develop insecurities as companies push idols as the "ideal being". The issue now is that instead of trying to break that system and try to manage their insecurities, they attack a young girl who has to abide by this to survive.
So basically, we need to have nuanced discussions about Wonyoung, no, she is not a goddess who can make absolutely no mistakes, but she also isn't the scum of the Earth. She is a human being (a very pretty one at that) who deserves her flowers for being able to keep up with so much for so long, and she is a worker, in a harsh industry and is surviving. The meaningless hate towards her could be directed at the KPOP industry, but as usual, individualism rots the brain.

Now, both the situations were different, and DK didn't deserve such hate and comparisons from Twitter, however the comments under the reel was... embarrassing.

I absolutely loved this video and as usual, you got everything right. It is so hard for idols to be in their industry alone because of the hard work and unfortunately the exploitation that is so apparent in this industry. On top of that their fans are a bunch of jealous bullies with superiority complexes. The more time passes, the more I believe that Kpop Stans do not deserve these idols (who's job is to entertain these ungrateful people).
Anyways on a more positive note, I admire Wonyoung's hard work. She has not stopped since P48, and all of her accomplishments are well deserved. Yujin is so pretty and is a great leader, actually, all the girls in IVE are phenomenal and I am blown away by their accomplishments at such a young age. They are a force to reckoned with.

Thank you for speaking up about this! I've tried my best reasoning with people around the internet about the Wonyoung hate. Its easier for them to hate on a figurehead instead of the company. They forget that she is just an eighteen year old girl and that she's just like any other idol. They hate that she's popular and are jealous of her success. They resent her and attack her instead of the company for these issues. I hope she doesn't let this stuff get to her, even though its very hard. I'll always try my best to defend her when she gets undeserved hare.
