Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the first movie in the franchise, opened in 2003 to favorable reviews from both reviewers and viewers. Worldwide, it brought in USD 654 million. Walt Disney Pictures revealed that a film series was in development following the box office success of the first movie. Dead Man's Chest, the second movie in the franchise, debuted in 2006 and on the same day broke box office records all over the world. At the global box office, Dead Man's Chest brought in about US$1.1 billion, making it the highest-grossing film of 2006. The series' third movie, At World's End, came out in 2007 and made US$960 million. Disney released a fourth movie in 2011 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3-D, and traditional 2D under the title On Stranger Tides. At the time of its release, On Stranger Tides was the ninth movie ever to earn over $1 billion, making it the second installment in the saga overall. In 2017, a movie with the subtitles Dead Men Tell No Tales was released.
