- NASCAR 2001 (PS2) - Driver: Dale Jarrett - Track: Daytona 500
NASCAR 2001 was the final game that featured Dale Earnhardt as a regular full-time driver, prior to his death in the 2001 Daytona 500 (which would reappear in NASCAR Sim Racing with his 1999 car, then in NASCAR 07 as an unlockable Chase Plate and Earnhardt appears in NASCAR Thunder 2003 as result of a cheat code). Johnny Benson is also absent in this game, while it was the first NASCAR game to include Jimmy Spencer. The drivers Michael Waltrip, Kenny Irwin Jr., Richard Petty and Adam Petty do not participate in any of the races as a computer opponent, instead the player must be the driver.

This is one of the best PlayStation 2 launch titles, despite being exclusive to North America! I'll have to purchase it sometime. This is also a great gameplay video. Nice job!

This seems like one of those "transition" games, they're in every generation. Things have moved past the previous generation, but developers are playing it safe and being conservative with things so they don't push the new hardware.
Nah they're shit. Look at other ps2 games from around that time like tekken tag tournament etc

Like I said, it's a generation transition game, between the PS1 and PS2, so the developers played it very safe with the graphics and such to make sure they didn't push the new hardware too far and cause performance issues.

Man, this brings back some memories! My friend and I found out that if you go on 2 player at a place like Dega and have a big gap between players (like 1 lap), the AI will compensate the trailing player's speed (we both got to 250 mph). You should try it! Thanks for the post
I think most EA NASCAR games have that, so races are closer and more fun if the other player isn't very good.

"Hometown" is where they live. What you mentioned is usually referred as "birthtown". I fucking hate how, in the USA, it's more common to mention hometown than birthtown.

The only real way to play this game is with a friend, and not race at all. At the start of the race (I usually played on Talladega because of its smooth turns), you turn around and proceed to drive the wrong way while your friend tries to actually race. Because you're driving the course backwards, you get the speed comp, making you go up to like 240mph (about 40mph faster than everyone else). Then, while your friend is trying to race, you try to hunt him down and smash into him to completely fuck him over.

still have this game i love it my favorite season was 2000 just always hated how there were only 20 cars in races and didnt have all the tracks
PS2 version was half-assed compared to the PS1 version in so many ways.

I played the '98 version of this on the first PS system, but when I got into the Sierra/Papyrus NASCAR racing sims for PC (Specifically NR 4 and NR 2003), I never went back to any game console based NASCAR sim/game...

ESPN stopped NASCAR coverage in 2000 so he wasn't even part of the sport in real life anymore is probably why they got rid of him the next year.

I’ve played this a lot.
You can also unlock Dale Earnhardt as a Thunder plate and race with him in Nascar 2005: Chase for the Cup. I race with him ALL the time! =D

After 2016, only Kenseth and Dale Jr. remain as full time drivers. Bobby Labonte and Michael Waltrip are part time while Elliott Sadler is in Xfinity.

GT3 opened gamers' eyes to what a PS2 racing game should look like. Nascar 2001 for the PS2 was like a PS 1.5 game.

You know what's sad is the A.I. on this game is better than today's NASCAR 11.

Think this was the first Nascar game to properly feature Daytona, but it look slike they had to sacrifice certain tracks to get it. I don't see Texas, Rockingham, Las Vegas, Pocono, and Michigan, and they were featured in previous Nascar games before this. Dover, Homestead and New Hampshire wouldn't be featured at all until Nascar Thunder 2002.

I got this on PS1 and I thought that it sucked. The NASCAR Thunder 2002-03 games on PS2 were excellent though.

I try this game for the first time in PS3 using a backward compatibility the gameplay looks alot fine
