That's not how any of that works. Having more power pulses per revolution doesn't magically make your cobustion chambers larger. The 26b isn't a 7.8L engine.
@flip inheck Norton can't enter their rotary power motorcycle anymore because they don't make them and haven't since the 1990s. Mazda was classed as a 1300 cc engine. All rotary engines were measured the same way so all must have been cheating
@flip inheck yes rotary has 3 sides per rotor, but the firing graft process every crank are slower than 4 strokes. Rotary done 2 firing from 720degree rotation of crankshaft.

You got a typo the F1 was 588cc not 388cc. I saw the Nortons in the Isle of Man and wanted a rotary. Years later I get myself a 1,400 mile Hercules W2000. Only 27Hp but big fun the ride, Ok it needed some paint and a load of new chrome but for £1,080! with an unmarked chamber its now immaculate and a keeper.
Like the rotary motorcycle love it.

My uncle has on VHS, the first day they raced. They came out of nowhere, flying past first place to lead the field. It was brutal, devastatingly brutal.

Wonder how long before rebuilds? I built a RX-7 and they were good for about 30,000 miles and then the seals needed replacing. The trick to make em last longer was to add a bottle of 2 stroke oil with every fill up.

Wouldn't that set up have a gyroscopic effect? Obviously not because they work but we built a bicycle that you didn't have to put your feet down when you stopped using a vertical flywheel to act like a gyroscopic but turning or leaning it was hell

Actually, mes amis, the engine note is disappointing...as one would expect it to replicate a loud 2-stroke sound.
Does have a touch of 2 stroke about it,I saw it race years ago at Knockhill and it whipped everyone else on race day!Sounds much better in real life,trust me😉

The rotary engine works in a 4 stroke system, but it makes an exhaust stroke every intake, making a 2 stroke like sound, pretty amazing imo
You're thinking in terms of 1 dimension (a straight line, which is how a piston operates), whereas a rotary is 2 dimensions (which would be a circle), due to its combustion cycle. Not to be confused with a 'Radial Engine' that's typically found in prop planes.
IF anyone could solve the oiling issues with the Wankel, they would be fantastic for sure!! 388cc is not really fair since it is a rotor with three sides. Should be 388 x 3.
They were usually geared (epicyclic) so that there was one ignition event (per rotor) per rotation of the eccentric shaft. I.e. not dissimilar to a two-stroke. So for that reason it's common to double the swept volume and quote that as the effective displacement when compared against ordinary piston engines - again, like a two-stroke. It also breathes through ports that are covered and uncovered by what is effectively the piston in a rotary - sensing a theme? So, despite actually operating on a four-stroke cycle, they have the same scavenging and noise issues as two strokes - hence the brap.

I can say "Wankel" in 2 shakes of a lamb's tail. I can say "two stroke" in 3 shakes of a lamb's tail.... "Wankel" is 1/3rd quicker

I can vividly remember Donnington when Norton 588 rotary down the bridge straight would leave the best 750cc works team bikes for dead. Shame Norton didn't try harder for road version and shame befor selling to bmw,made 588 rotary bloody police bikes! Wtf
@flip inheck The rules say it was 588cc, so did the Road taxation class, the Mazda is classed as 1.3 for road tax
@flip inheck So the Four stroke manufacturers played up to get the rules changed to ban rotary engines. The same way manufacturers got Slippery Sam banned as the T150 was no longer in production.

Who owned norton at rotary period?
Ironically,Norton was owned by some rather dodgy 'businessmen' during the rotary era. Move forward a number of years and history is currently repeating itself with another shady 'businessman' at the helm. That Norton brand name isn't having much luck.
@@howardosborne8647 shame really as I love the look of norton past and garner era. We saw them a number of years ago at goodwood and said I love the look but way overpriced.
