You have become my grown up equivalent to Saturday morning cartoons. That speaks to my excitement level and entertainment, and is meant as a complement. 😃
I love hearing Donovan describe how the loads work, and how you create the structure taking into account how things settle and change over time. I can see why you picked him - he's really deeply knowledgeable. Thanks.
I really enjoy watching you guys work together. It's reminding me of when I used to watch This Old House, which I used to love watching on the weekends
That most definitely is a life hack. Cut the board with the wire through it short enough to be able to chisel it. I noticed that too on the other video. Thats how you can tell Donovan is the man! All the tricks hes picked p along the way. As always nice video Matt.
Love your entire channel. It would help me keep oriented in your remodel if you would show a short view of the plans at the beginning pointing out where you are working in relation to the surroundings. Or even a quick scan around with the camera. Thanks.
When I installed a pocket closet door (to save space), I had to install two 2"/10"/12' headers to span the space where I had to remove four studs. First time for me but it all worked out very smoothly because I watched many RUclips videos.
Found your channel a week or two ago and I'm hooked ! I was an arborist for years and finally got my first wood mill... This is an AWESOME channel !! SO much variety and good stuff, super mellow/concise explanations ... Very helpful as I got some land and Im looking forward to building soon..Although looks like I still need quite a bit of tools to get started but the mill is definitely the best first step lol . Thanks, Im working my way through a few videos a day !!
"Are you sure it's dead?" "yea, sure." That's an old electricians trick they play on new hires. It's how new electricians learn how to always test an outlet and never take someone's word for it.
Matt, Thank your wife for allowing us to come along this journey with you. Having added electrical and plumbing to my 1901 queen ann Victorian, I remember well, that things took 2x as long as I thought- but as long as my contractor thought.!! I mentioned in another comment - add more outlets in the kitchen and anywhere as you put in new walls - very inexpensive to do now... very hard/ expensive later. My electrician recommended every 3 ft along counter - and there were sooo many times I was glad we did. fwiw
Matt, Unlike you, I am hair-challenged so never, ever go into an attic without a baseball cap on. Most excellent circuit-tester/coffee grinder. When solo and searching for a correct circuit breaker I've used a radio turned way up loud and listen for it to go silent. Remodeling is just soooo much fun! Great job by Donavan & you!
Try a circuit tracer device like a "Klein Tools ET310" for chasing down those circuit breakers. Works even better than a radio as no multiple guessing attempts are required. You find the exact breaker.
Please do a video on LVL. I saw a video of a company that manufactures LVL. The company is in Borneo and they use Rubber trees that are too old for rubber tapping. The LSL manufacturers boast that they use every part of a tree. They even use the bark for energy and heat.
Got my stickers this past week, and my MacBook thanks you! I love watching this series; I’m learning so much! And I’m sure you’ll have your finish carpentry under control when the time comes, but boy would I love to lend a hand. If not, Finish Pro LLC is stretched and ready 👌🏻
Guys, get 1 or 2 of those work platforms. They are relatively cheap and are a lot better than ladders in the house. Tons of uses for them. 20"H x 4'L x 12" wide. From $50-125.
LMAO! Hey Matt, I've watched a lot of your rough mill vids, and a couple of your furniture builds, always good fun. Now is see your 'honey do's'/too dang cold to be outside fun! Hint in the attic, no mud/tape on the drywall screws, think on that.
UK electrians would have a fit watching you testing for live with a coffee pot, I guess you have a chance as its 110V if you get a belt. US wiring always seems crude compared to UK,
It's very dangerous to unhook the neutral wire to check if the power is off. If you touch the wire or appliance that is not well insulated and there's a load downstream, current could go thru you to ground. Next time unhook the hot only.
So I finally got around to asking Google LDL meant. All the results I got were talking about LDL Cholesterol. Not much help. After one change in my search parameters, I learned about LVL beams. Google is pretty cool but you have to know what you are asking for.
Matt at the end you are standing under the old lintel. The studs are all doubled. But your new lintel today only has single studs holding it up. I have no idea of US code but it looks like either the old one was over engineered or your new one needs further reinforcement
You need an electrical circuit tracer, something like a "Klein Tools ET310" which is intended to find which circuit breaker the line you're working on goes to but it can also be used to give rudimentary indications of where wires are going in your walls. OR.... get a WALABOT device to see exactly where your wires are going. The WALABOT is at least twice as expensive as the circuit tracer though and the WALABOT can't find the circuit breaker feeding your line. I have a circuit tracer myself as I had to find a way of figuring out which breaker to trip when doing outlet maintenance without any assistance or making a guess and then running back and forth 20 times to see if I had found the correct breaker that time.
@@philipethier9136 : I agree, that works. However, if I had tripped several circuit breakers before I found the correct one, I would then have to go through the house to see which clocks and such would have to be reset and so on. For me the circuit tracer was the perfect solution and worth the price.
Matt, do you ever brush or comb your hair? in all the years watching, i'm not sure I have ever seen you with "combed" hair. Still love watching your channel and your "antics" keep up the great work. :-)
Little too late lol. But I kept wondering why you didn't just pull your phone out and take a picture of the outlet and wires so you can show Donovan what you wanted him to see.
So many questions so little time. First this did not look like a fun day. How did Donovan find out that wire was hot. Have you left enough room for the refrigerator in that corner. It looks like it is not deep enough from the doorway. You guys are supercalifragilisticexpialadocious.
As soon as I heard Matt say I’m sure it’s dead I thought Oh Oh. A bit nervous watching you guys play with live cables. I’m thinking you should have isolated the power first.

Agreed 😁
This old house for me.
Aptly said.
I love hearing Donovan describe how the loads work, and how you create the structure taking into account how things settle and change over time. I can see why you picked him - he's really deeply knowledgeable. Thanks.
Donovan is a surgeon with that sawzall, impressive! I love my DeWalt 60v sawzall too.
When I saw the sawsall blade skip off the wire, my heart jumped.
You guys are showing real life situations in a remodeling project. No cover ups or editing anything out, great videos.
I really enjoy watching you guys work together. It's reminding me of when I used to watch This Old House, which I used to love watching on the weekends
I still do.
You must feel very confident with Donovan working alongside you on this very involved renovation !!
Gents, I am so enjoying watching this renovation. It's like putting a giant puzzle together. Great work!!!!!
Matt, this series is honestly the highlight of my youtube week, actually my whole media week 😄. Wonderful content, thanks 😊
That most definitely is a life hack. Cut the board with the wire through it short enough to be able to chisel it. I noticed that too on the other video. Thats how you can tell Donovan is the man! All the tricks hes picked p along the way. As always nice video Matt.
Always so fun to watch these videos. It is getting good now.

Great progress Matt. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.

There’s a little brother big brother dynamic and I just love it!
Working with hot wires... That's fun! I always hate mystery circuits but it is a good opportunity to simplify and have it make more sense.
Looking good fellas!

Should have used the coffee grinder to make sure!!!
That was epic. 😂
Man, I hate that "SNAP". Most nerve-wracking part of renos. It's why I always test with the VOM like 15-20 times before messing with wires.
It's actually a federal crime to do such a joke and is also illegal OSHA rules.
Thats what they make testers for!
Never a problem that can't be solved. Truly enjoyable to watch.

I really want Norm, from This Old House, be a guest on your channel!
Thanks for the mock up and explanation of the load bearing structure. I didn't realize how easily it could rack If not done properly.
I love how Matt used a coffee grinder as an electrical tester. I have done that using a lamp or a radio or an electric drill. lol.
I don't know why, but I have seen electricians recommend a resistance device if you don't have a proper tester. Heat gun, toaster or similar.
Thích làm đủ thứ....chào các bạn thân yêu. Xem video vui vẻ nhé
Love watching this series.
Half gravity and double gravity! What a pair!
The law of an inverse pair.
OK. I get that Donovan might not have hole saws in his truck, but I am really surprised that Matt does not own hole saws. I would not be without mine.

Just wanted to say thanks for overlaying the measurement conversions on the video when talking about lengths in feet.
I enjoy watching you two guys working together and your banter too.
I, too, spend 8 hours chasing down wires on every project. 🤣
Keep up the great work!
It's not dead lol, love watching you and Donavan getting at it!
donavan is a saint, how long would this take without filming and making sure Matt is describing it correctly 🤣.... looking good. :)

I hate chasing electrical that someone else has done. I love watching you guys, keep them coming 😁
Greetings from the BIG SKY. I installed drapes for 20 years around construction and I always talked about header boards for drapery support.
What part ?
8:45 this made my skin crawl - watching someone working on electrical wire without seeing them verify that it's cold first.
I subscribed to Donavon’s channel. I like him. Good attitude. Good work ethic.
get yourself a beeper tester for electrical field. I have an independent one. Then, my multimeter from Home Depot actually has one built in,
Although these construction videos are longer than your average, it seems that they are over as soon as I start watching.
UK electrians would have a fit watching you testing for live with a coffee pot, I guess you have a chance as its 110V if you get a belt. US wiring always seems crude compared to UK,

21:37 Gravity is indeed powerful but I think the better adjective is relentless. Gravity never gets tired and takes a break.
still loving this as much as the first day !
I’ll come help you tear the floor up! Enjoying your renovation/ addition!
That is a point load
Good video Matt! Thank you for sharing it with us!💖👍😎JP
wow built a hold new house in the time you did the reno lol laughing great contend you do have
You need one of those pen type voltage testers. Saves getting shocked.
A little bit of eye make up and a tight pair of spandex pants, and Matt could be the lead in an 80’s hair metal band with that hair!
Those gravity remarks were funny.
Whoever works on Matt's house next is going to have such good research material.
It works for me !
It's very dangerous to unhook the neutral wire to check if the power is off. If you touch the wire or appliance that is not well insulated and there's a load downstream, current could go thru you to ground. Next time unhook the hot only.
Looking great Matt
Yes , more drama too come.
Looking good Matt!
You alsmot killed Donovan 🤣
Hey Matt..."Golden rule", "Never take the other Guys word that the circuit is powered off". Always check it yourself!
Hey, CreamonU...you should charge Donavan for his weight loss...should be a break even deal...lol...good jobs, guys!!
Matt zaps Donavan... Don't you have your circuits mapped, Matt?
Heck no. It’s a mess
So I finally got around to asking Google LDL meant. All the results I got were talking about LDL Cholesterol. Not much help.
After one change in my search parameters, I learned about LVL beams.
Google is pretty cool but you have to know what you are asking for.
Matt tests outlets like me... Except I use a drill tester.

We’ll add them in later once the opening’s position is finalized
Nice.
Agreed on the life hack.

A really-loud radio saves trips when browsing circuit breakers.

*"THIS IS NOT DEAD!"*
I'm glad your not doing my electrics!!!!
Famous last words - it is not dead.
Amazing work
Matt, do you ever brush or comb your hair? in all the years watching, i'm not sure I have ever seen you with "combed" hair. Still love watching your channel and your "antics" keep up the great work. :-)
Nope
title should be ( 2 guys fun time ) . a little fun sure makes work less of a pain in the backside .
One $5 2X4
Two $5 2X4!
Three.....
"yep"...
this is better than this old house... cuz its new... and new houses suck.. LOL
Little too late lol. But I kept wondering why you didn't just pull your phone out and take a picture of the outlet and wires so you can show Donovan what you wanted him to see.
It's too long. Okay we will shorten it. Just put it in from the other end and it will fit. 😀
So many questions so little time. First this did not look like a fun day. How did Donovan find out that wire was hot. Have you left enough room for the refrigerator in that corner. It looks like it is not deep enough from the doorway. You guys are supercalifragilisticexpialadocious.
It arced when Donavan pulled it through the box. The opening is set by the depth of the fridge and is currently framed oversize
The Tingling in my fingers
I love the padauk planks. Will they be exposed?
Love you guys, starting to check out Donavan's Channel:
ruclips.net/user/donavanshomesvideos
What's the most important thing I learned from this video? Not to trust Matthew with electrical wiring!
You removed the outlet hot!
Something I'd do!
That's one of the challenges of remodeling a remodel. Where do all the wires go? (Edit:) Lead to?
The dumpster
As soon as I heard Matt say I’m sure it’s dead I thought Oh Oh. A bit nervous watching you guys play with live cables. I’m thinking you should have isolated the power first.
👋
Just as he asked "is that dead", I thought to myself "trust...but verify". Then he got zapped smh
Just like you have to verify that a gun is unloaded yourself, you have to verify that a wire is dead yourself. Don't trust anyone.
Hey Matt, when you finish this job are you going to throw a bucket of water on it?
Hahahaha I totally should
Bzzzt, crackle, bzzt, pop.
No beans were injured in the making of this video.
when doing remodels people need to understand when you open up walls and such Buchanan will run into unforeseen things that cannot be can be seen in advance Forrest Gump said Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.
👍
Side question; is Cremona Italian?
Hey Matt, who do you have filming you guys work?
Brad, my editor
@@mcremona “Brad my editor” and creative director, master of the schedule, grip builder, colorist, etc etc 😆😆
