  • Whether it was John Lennon, Michael Caine or Andy Warhol, David Bailey's photographs of 1960s celebrities defined the decade. As a retrospective of his most famous images goes on show at Bonhams, he talks to Sarfraz Manzoor about Picasso, body language and his dread of photographing modern celebrities

    Great interview with a lovely ending. Hard to believe Bailey is 80. His irrepressible chuckle and totally original insights are as full of verve as ever. I feel lucky to have grown up his era.

    Paul McCartney said a few years ago that he had a dream that the 60's hadn't yet happened! Love the sliding time of never ending and haven't happened from 2 different artists from the same time. They're onto something!

    His is work might not be "political" but his beautiful person totally is: totally unaffected, genuine, raw, no pompous shit... A brilliant mind and a brilliant person.
    Thank you David for letting me know that, somewhere out there, real intelligence is still alive.

    @RuthSLHare David Bailey's work is great. He was at the heart of the sixties explosion of creativity. You weren't there, so you don't know beans about it.

    @RuthSLHare There has been so much Baileyesque work since his heyday that I can understand how you would be unaware which work came first. Bailey's body of work is important. If you don't understand that, I really can't help you. And no - "Anyone CANNOT do that".

    I love the way he brushes aside all the arty farty shit that comes with being a photographer. The truth is he is just taking photographs. He knows this and he doesn't need the bullshit.

    Bailey said anyone who is slightly rude, wearing boots with cuban heels and can have a Pentax at their disposal, can be a fashion photographer.

    The thing I like about Bailey is that he's not pretentious.
    The thing about The Guardian that wears me out is that they always have to go Bolshie on their questions. Just let people be themselves.
    Politics is not the be all of life.

    What did rz67camera say?

  • @marsCubed
    @marsCubed 13 лет назад

    @nilbud Nurses are often highly skilled workers, they sell their time in return for a wage to employers.
    Some nurses in more managerial roles, particularly where they get much higher pay, may identify more with managers, such loyalties often break in times of pay cuts or victimization etc.
    Class reflects economic interests. Owners want to get productivity out of employees.
    However workers can decide to refuse to compete into poverty pay or be divided for myopic & damaging bonus spiv dogmas.
    :)

  • @marsCubed
    @marsCubed 13 лет назад +1

    Marx would say;
    Class is relationship to means of production.
    A capitalist owns capital.. ie the owner of a company or a banker.
    Managers & foremen are middle class; they manage on behalf of the capitalist.
    Middle class is also shop keepers, taxi drivers, plumbers etc. who both own & work their own business.
    Working class is the vast majority of people.. everyone who works for wage.
    ie almost everybody. Even traditionally middle class roles like nursing and bank clerks are working class now.
