    It occurs to me that the reason Caramalinda is so fond of Liam is because she’s also in a position where she’s a political tool. And she’s pushing him to get married so he doesn’t end up married to someone he doesn’t love, like she is.

  • @redmanish
    @redmanish 3 года назад +407

    Caramalinda truly understood the dangerous position her family was in. She was tough on the girls because their enemies won’t hesitate to kill someone just because they’re naive children. They needed to grow up quick and understand the risks they were taking were not acceptable.
    So good to see this trope done well, and not just have it be a typical “uptight haggy wife/mom” thing. Caramalinda was a boss who knew how the fucking game worked dude and she was right from the get go.

      @@devinspencer1678 I think it was more that she ended up with Amethar, who was always going to be their favourite, especially since she was busy ruling the kingdom. She ended up with all of the not-fun parenting moments and was overly protective because she didn't trust Amethar (and by extention their kids, though that's understandable from a parent) to keep them safe when there were times she probably should have.

    It felt good to have Brennan at the end of the season declaratively state that Caramelinda was not a villain, but in fact scared of the situation her family was put in, because though you could clearly see that her motivations were not out of ambition but mere survival, you could also see how someone not really paying attention to her point of view could think she’s a Cersei

      here's the thing tho, making decisions is always a choice, and when ur decisions affect everyone, its important not only that your people feel free to make their choices, but that you seem free to make yours as well. so when the queen treats her own children that way, it would be rather hard for any "lowborn" to have any sympathy nor any loyalty to a queen who sees freedom as a clinched fist instead of an open hand. but yes, i understand that her situation is inescapable for her so she's doing what she *believes* she must. that being said it is a "got" era thing, so if they all just ran they could have probably just disappeared, never to be seen again. it doesn't accomplish much, but treating people the way she did accomplished the opposite of what she wanted, rather obviously. kingdoms are complex, until a greater king comes along.

    • @manticorephoenix
      @manticorephoenix 21 день назад

      @ most lowborn families, if they start a fight in a bar, the consequences usually don’t leave the bar, there’s an even higher chance of those consequences not starting a war, and most lowborn families are not privy to Caramelindas raising of her daughters, until the moment those daughters kick off some shit, we have to remember that regardless of what and who began the Ravening War, it was Nobility killing Nobility, this is not a common occurrence and the war is still fresh in everyone’s mind that holds power in this unstable era, the woman she actually wanted to have children with was brutally killed and there was no Justice for it other than a faceless army being wiped out, now she sees her children being raised and brought up to be like their father who treated life and war as a game, he lost his whole family while she lost a love and he didn’t seem bothered about it until that war that he wanted reached his daughters throat, she learned just how easy it is to lose everything before she had rule of Candia, then she watches as she loses her daughters to her manchild husband, then one is murdered, then here comes a volatile unstable bastard surrounded by cutthroats who wants to strip everything her remaining child has, yeah idc if her attitudes a little tart (😀) she is looking at her kingdom at the knifes edge wondering why no one is talking about fixing this

    I love all the moments where they cut themselves off because it makes rewatches so good. Amethar when talking about why he likes horsing around with Jet and Ruby says "this is around the time when..." and trails off. He still misses his sisters. And when Carmelinda is exasperated and exclaims "What is wong with you?! Who did I marry? Do you think..." she was probably about to invoke Lazuli's name, or maybe ask what Amethars sisters would have wanted.
    They're still grieving the same people, but are unable to be emotionally vulnerable to eachother. Its not until Jet dies that they realize they need eachother, if not as lovers then at least as partners.

    I know she's a teen, but Ruby is played SO utterly selfish at the funeral. She acts like Caramelinda is 'blaming' Jet for her own death, when Caramelinda is just distraught that her daughter is dead because she never heeded her warnings-- and she's completely right.

    • @KaelWrit

      yknow, people, especially teens and kids, really do that during mourning. It's real.

    • @icarus4302
      @icarus4302 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@KaelWrit Yes, but that doesn't excuse her behavior. I was younger than Ruby and blamed my mother for a lot of the same things, but I grew up and was then able to see her perspective, and that I was in the wrong as much as I had my right.
      Caramelinda, like every character in A Crown of Candy, is a complex character with layers of plots and emotion. I really love how she's written. A survivor of a series of traumas and devastation desperately trying to prevent that from happening to herself and the people around her.
      But Ruby is also an interesting character in and of herself. She is a reckless, privileged teenager who wants to be free, and only realizes why all those walls were up in the first place when her sister died. She is absolutely selfish, as any teenager raised from privilege to war would be, but by the end of this compilation specifically she shows compassion for not wanting to lose any more family.
      In a way they are kinda perfect parallels of one another, a mix of grief, lashing out, and desperately trying to protect themselves and their loved ones. Ruby can be a selfish teenager and a compassionate sister at the same time. Caramelinda can be a strict mother and a terrified survivor at the same time. None of this has to exist as villain or hero, good or evil, and that is what makes A Crown of Candy so good. The layers upon layers of building so it all looks grey, and you can understand and find interest in any character's perspective.
