    2:30 I deal with this every day. So many drivers across the intersection at the 2 way stop turning left think they get to go first, even when I start advancing and turning right after I have stopped. It has honestly made me question if i have been doing it wrong the entire time.

    Driving here in Oregon, I get tailgated everyday because I do the speed limit. We call it following too close, tailgating is very difficult to avoid when you obey the rules of the road. I want everyone to use caution and drive the limit but they usually don’t.

      Hi Kowan McGarry - if you're going to insist on driving the speed limit my friend, you're going to have people tailgating you. And you're not going to change that. If you have your license, I would encourage you to keep up with traffic flow so that you're more predictable on the roadway. All the best, Cheers Rick

      @@smartdrivetest If I keep up with traffic and everyone else is going 10 mph over the speed limit, I’m going to get a ticket. I had one speeding ticket in my life, that was enough. You won't get a speeding ticket if you're keeping up with traffic flow my friend. And traffic laws no more prevent traffic crashes any more than criminal law prevents crime. By following the speed limit you're causing other traffic to tailgater you and queue up behind you. It's unpredictable. But again, it's your choice. All the best, Cheers Rick

      @@smartdrivetest Sorry to say this but what you are saying doesn't make any sense at all. Why should a sensible driver let the others force him to drive over the speed limit if he doesn't feel safe to do so ? Traffic rules exist for a reason and tailgaters are one of the worst road criminals. They are mentally distressed people who think they own the road! Personally whenever I see someone drive too close for my comfort I check my surroundings and at the next opportunity I try to get out of his way by changing lanes or pulling over to the right. Until now this has always worked for me and I can continue driving without having a tailgater in my back and eliminating the changes of being a victim of road rage.

      @@christinamayers3234 you can go over the speed limit as long as it’s not excessive. If you went to driving school they actually mention that you have to keep up with the traffic flow, it’s the same for driving due to the weather etc. You’re not actually supposed to be exactly on the speed limit, and if so, then stay in the lane where you’re supposed to stay in. Left is a passing lane, faster vehicles go there. Right lane is where it’s at for those slower drivers.

I'm confused as to right-turning drivers who use the curb lane to pull up to the front of the queue of cars going straight or left at an all-way stop. Is it legal? If so, is it corteous? If two oncoming vehicles arrive with timing that is in doubt, the simpler movement has priority. This means left turners yield to straight traffic, and left turners yield to right-turners if they would conflict. No-conflict movements may proceed simultaneously.

    This may be a dumb question but what happens if two opposite vehicles approach a 2 way stop sign and they’re both turning left, who goes first???? They can go at the same time if their paths aren’t crossing right?

    • @carultch
      @carultch 5 месяцев назад

      No-conflict traffic can proceed simultaneously. Two simultaneous left turners in ordinary passenger vehicles, are no-conflict traffic. Just proceed half way until you pass each other, and then start your turn. A truck or vehicle that requires a more complex turning path, will yield to the simpler vehicle in this situation.

  • @sweetenc65
    @sweetenc65 2 года назад +1

    I have a situation I’m hoping you can clarify. I’m a driver with over 20 years experience. I encountered a situation where I was heading in the straight position and the opposite traffic had a vehicle turning left - the left turning vehicle arrived first but because of the cross traffic we both had to yield to let the other traffic move through the 4 way stop. Once that happened, I proceeded to go because straight always has right of way against turning but the other driver clearly disagreed with she flipped me off. My understanding is that when this instance occurs, the idea of who arrived first for me and the other car is almost like a reset because we both had to yield to cross traffic. Which is why once the cross traffic cleared, I moved through in the straight position knowing the turning vehicle should yield. While I understand right of way is given and not taken, in instances like these, isn’t that how the movement of a 4 way stop can get jumbled? I see people near my kids’ schools assume this all the time and constantly take the right of way as the turning vehicle and it causes more confusion and congestion with the stop. Any advice or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks! 🤗

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  2 года назад

      Hi sweetenc65 - you 're asking all the right questions my friend. And technically you're correct; however I'm unsure about the reset. At the end of the day--as you said, the right-of-way is always given--it's 10s out of your day to let the other driver go first and have their crash some where else. That's a great question that's got me thinking. I'll give it some more thought. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

      From the left turner's perspective, 2 way stops can be very frustrating, especially at busy intersections. This is because the only window for them to turn is when there happens to be enough time for the one to go straight through and then for the person to turn left before more cross traffic approaches. At least as I understand it. Regardless, the person going straight always had the right of way in your particular situation. I just avoid two way stops altogether when I can because of people's confusion on this 😂

  • @vitaliiyarema

    My question is: For all ways stop, I have come the first to the intersection, but need to yield pedestrians, should the second driver wait for me if he can pass without violation rules? And after pedestrians from my side having crossed the road, what is my seqvence now in this line of drivers if there are already others drivers which have come to intersection while I was letting pedestrians to cross?

    • @carultch
      @carultch 5 месяцев назад

      If you would otherwise have priority at an all-way stop, and have to yield to pedestrians, then your right-of-way is on hold, until the pedestrians finish crossing, or get to a point where it is legal for your proceed (i.e. the 1 buffer lane or physical median rule). Traffic that is out-of-the-picture of the pedestrians can proceed in the meantime, with the right-of-way sequence they'd have if you weren't in the picture. Once the pedestrians get to a point where you can proceed, you treat that as if it were your new arrival time, and resume your right-of-way to adapt to the new arrivals at this time.
      If there was another driver who also had to wait for the same pedestrian group, then the two of you resume the right-of-way sequence that you originally would've otherwise had.

    @Flintlock85 2 года назад

    Good job on your video! Have an issue with one part though...at time mark 2:30 you mention about left turning traffic thinking they have priority because they arrived at intersection first. In the State of Michigan the vehicle code, (MCL 257.650), specifically address left turns stating, "(1) The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the right of way to a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close to the intersection as to constitute an immediate hazard; but the driver, having so yielded and having given a signal when and as required by this chapter, may make the left turn and the drivers of all other vehicles approaching the intersection from the opposite direction shall yield the right of way to the vehicle making the left turn. At an intersection at which a traffic signal is located, a driver intending to make a left turn shall permit vehicles bound straight through in the opposite direction which are waiting a go signal to pass through the intersection before making the turn." Based on the exact wording of this law, if two vehicles approach a two way stop intersection at roughly the same time, (one turning left and one going straight), then the vehicle turning left must yield to the one going straight once traffic is clear from the adjacent roadway. Once that is done, then the driver waiting to turn left has priority over any additional vehicles that were behind the vehicle that went straight. Imagine the inefficiency if a person waiting to turn left had to sit at an intersection for half an hour because there were 35 other cars at the stop sigh across the way all wanting to go straight through. Perhaps the laws in Canada or your state say something different? Thanks for the video!

    I'm 42 and have been driving since I was 16, but yesterday I came to a 4 way stop with stop signs where I pulled up at the same time as 2 other cars. Very rare scenario for me. I was sitting there with my left turn signal on for a while, and the other drivers were just sitting there. I was waiting for them to go. I didn't want them to honk at me, and I was pretty intimidated. Nobody was behind me, so I backed up and turned around so they could all go and I could try again. Came back to the intersection and another car pulled up across from me at the same time. Again, my left turn signal was on, didn't really know what to do, didn't want them honking/getting angry, and I was waiting for them to go but they were just sitting there. Nobody was behind me so I backed up and turned around to try a third time. (No I'm not an idiot/stupid, I have a 124 IQ.)

    Why on earth would they complicate things by making the rules different for 2-way stops than for 3-way, 4-way or all-way stops? Of course, they didn't. The only thing different is that you have cross traffic that doesn't have to stop.
    The rules are the same for all stop signs.
    1. Come to a complete stop where required (stop line or cross walk or before entering the intersection).
    2. Yield to pedestrians.
    3. Yield to vehicles that don't have to stop if they are close enough to be a danger (1-way and 2-way stops).
    4. Yield to vehicles already in the intersection.
    5. The first to arrive is the first to go (the basic rule).
    6. If you arrive at the same time:
    a. For crossing traffic, yield to the vehicle to your right. If they are going straight and you are turning right, you can go at the same time.
    b. For head to head traffic, left turning vehicles should yield to straight or right turning vehicles. If you are both going straight or both turning right, you can both go at the same time. If you are both turning left, you can both go at the same time, but you need to be careful about whether you turn in front of each other (for smaller intersections) or turning behind each other (possibly better for larger intersections).
    7. Never start to go unless you are sure all other vehicles are stopped or stopping.
    So if you think that is your turn to go, but see someone else is going out of turn, just yield to them and make your turn 2 seconds later. Don't rage and honk and force it.
    This nonsense about 2-way stops magically having a different set of rules is just a misinterpretation of poorly written laws. And even if you ask two different cops, you will probably get a different answer. Even judges can get it wrong. Luckily, if you drive defensively and don't force things, you can avoid collisions and the reality of who goes first at a 2-way stop will probably never cause you a problem.
    That being said, there may be some state or municipality that does have a clearly defined different and confusing rule just for 2-way stops, but that is not true for the majority of the country.
