To add a bit of extra taste to these I boil them, than in the same pan as the fried onions I then add the sausage to brown them a bit, taste even better.

try wrapping the aldi hotdogs in bacon and grill them. glaze with bbq sauce if you like that an it adds to the flavor and texture, really nice. The aldi hotdogs are great value imo.

Just reminded me of the Spam and onion bap I had yesterday. I sell at car boot and catering girl was over generous with the onions. Definitely a very windy evening. I generally prefer red onions. Herta sausages have been around forever in the UK. I'd still say original and best.

The Herta sausages are French (FR). They contain a lot more "dodgy" ingredients than the Aldi ones. I still prefer Lidl Bockwurst, though. I also fry some onions when I prepare a hotdog.

    • @jameskrell4392

I doubt they contain more dodgy ingredients. French meat is often higher welfare than ours, you only have to taste their flavousome pork against our tasteless supermarket pork. I agree about the Lidl bockwurst though. Lidl dosen’t trade on imitation or trying to copy.

Hey Gaz, I love your videos.... I watch them all the time and they provide some really good insight into comparisons and recommendations.
I have to say though, you often say "I'm all over the place".... this time you kind of were.
A really good pair of products to compare, but your comparison......using different bread, different condiments (onions on one, none on the other).. I'm afraid the water between bites doesn't mean anything on this one.
I'm sorry to sound negative, I promise my message is just an honest one to highlight my surprise and it's probably because you are generally SO fastidious in making sure the comparison is so fair (water between tastes, for example).
Still enjoyed the video, as always.

I've been buying Hertas for many years now but the last couple of times, I've noticed a change.
I always griddle them so they get a nice char on them and the amount of water coming out of them is ridiculous. They also don't get that 'bite' that you used to get with them and have noticeably less flavour.
Think I'll try the alternatives from now on.

Technically, you don't fry the onions for hotdog, you steam them. In the US, you can buy "sweet white" onions and they are not as pungent and work beautifully. Depending on the State you are in, some use plain mustard but others use a mustard pickle. Husband is American and will only eat the Hertz - typical Southern boy he likes his smothered with chilli. Maybe another meal try out for you! Bun, hotdog, lashings of meat chilli, smothered with grated cheese. Enjoy!

Germany has stricter rules when it comes to their sausages and they have been in place often for hundreds of years, so the Aldi ones are probably closer to a proper German Frankfurter but still not as good as the best I would think. Order some from an online company called The Sausage Man who specialise in quality German made sausages and compare them with the cheaper ones. The difference is quite stark, although they are more expensive as a result.

I like my frankfurters, wurst and similar. The best way to have the frankfurters is to score or put little cuts into them and put them on a low heat in the pan frying in my view. PS. It's hard to find this kind of thing in the UK at the moment. The Waitrose unearthed Frankfurters are really good but ridiculously overpriced like many things (though not all) at Waitrose. I recommend Lidl Mini Bockwurst. Good value and about as good. Better than Herta and the like in my opinion.

I wish American style beef hotdogs were more common in the UK. You can get them but not in any of the big supermarkets and I'm not sure why. In my local Sainsbury's and Tesco, they have an imported food section and there were several "American style" hotdogs but on closer inspection they were imported from Germany and were pork based. They even had beef salami but no beef hotdogs.

Gaz, I've always liked the Aldi frankfurters (they were 89p not too long ago); a lot of the tinned hot dogs are made with mechanically seperated chicken sadly. Try frying instead of the hot water; makes a tasty change 👍

They are pretty good Gaz. And the cheap ones for less than 2 quid are good. Everyone's complains about increasing prices. Sorry everything is going up, and supermarkets must make some profit. Its not a sin
