The photoghraphy of this video is just astonishing. Great place you select to film, perfect timing and day. Love those drone shots. Thanks for all the information.
Valur, you have been practicing how to pronounce “vulcanologist”. Bravo! With recent developments, you are getting a lot of practice. Exciting times to be in Iceland.
Good report Valur. Not sure how Grapevine is funded, but your government should be made aware of how much you are doing for Icelandic tourism, and stump up some cash to keep you going. Oh yes, and a lifetime supply of doggy treats for the chief morale officer.
Cant believe Art negotiates over that rugged terrain, holding a camera, and a lot of time, walking backward. Incredible. Happy new year, Valur, to you and Art, and all the staff back in the office. Here's hoping we can get back to normal in 2022.
You need to have someone video Art making the video- we REALLY want to see how he is able to do it. I don't think he has feet, he just levitates and glides................
Polly is waiting to be introduced properly. She's standing behind you and won't come out until she is. Happy New Year to everyone at Reykjavik Grapevine!
The Krafla eruptions in NE Iceland which lasted between 1975 and 1984 behaved a bit like Fagradalsfjall - although they were much bigger eruptions and they originate from a hot spot not an ocean ridge, so their lavas are quite different. During Krafla's most recent eruption, a fissure would open, pour out lava for a while, activity would cease and resume shortly afterwards along the same fissure line. The Mývatn Fires of 1724 to 1729 which erupted from the same volcanic system were very similar - although even bigger. Amazingly, in both cases no one is known to have died. I recommend a visit to the region if anyone fancies a trip to the North. But I better stop - Pollý is clearly thinking 'quit talking about the freaking volcano - I wanna play ball!' Happy New Year everyone - and thanks for all the nice conversations during 2021. Stay safe, be kind, have fun - be like Pollý.
Happy New Year to Valur, Art, Polly, and everyone else at the RVK team! Like many others, I'm sure, I met you all in March when the eruption started, and quickly became a fan. I enjoy your broadcasts with or without a volcano, but I have to admit another beautiful, polite eruption would be the perfect way to start the new year! :)
In England we have a game called 'Spot the Ball' where people put an 'X' where they think the ball is in a football game. Maybe you could hold a small competition where people try and guess where the volcano is going to erupt and you could give a prize of say 50000 beers for whoever get's it exact and smaller prizes of say 10 beers for the next 10 closest, it would be fun anyway, I think you should do it, just post a map on your website, you could get some traffic? ;D Happy New Year!!! ;D
@@heartwings2517 Thanks for that! Yeh I was being a bit humorous when I said beer but eh it would be fun and especially as it's a 200 year cycle could have quite a few chances to win! ;D
Yey! More volcano action!!! I hope I don't live to regret saying that, let's hope it's really people friendly, like a warm cuddly friendly volcano, not like Krakatoa, or Laki, or Tambora, or Toba, or Wah-Wah Springs ;D
Happiest of New Years to you Valur, Art and Polly and everyone who contributes to these amazing reports. Hope there are recording devices up in those hills waiting for this new eruption.
Valur, thank you for all of your videos this year. It's been really enjoyable watching you and Polly. I have learned so much about Iceland. Happy new year 🎉. 🌋
Wonderful video as usual! I like the ones with Polly best. She’s my doggy fix since my Lab, Ginger died. Lovely scenery, great video-ography, interesting content, etc, etc. I think the answer is D.
Thanks for the update, interesting to see that the snow has quickly melted where there is lava on the ground, clearly not yet cooled down! Wishing you and all your team at Reykjavik Grapevine a happy, safe and tourist busy 2022, it was such a shame COVID prevented many from visiting to see the eruption this year (me included), better luck in 2022.
Beautiful day in Iceland…Volcano could come up in the middle of the road…Global warming could make Iceland just like Hawaii…LOL…cameras should placed all around the valley, running continuously, to see in real time, where and how the volcano HATCHES….Awesome Stuff…. B.
The more I see the Reykjanes peninsula, especially around Fagradalsfjall, the more I am wowed by the wild interplay between fire and ice. Natthagi is a near perfect example of a glacial valley with a hanging valley above it (I believe its name is suðurmeradalir). Both are features of ice dominated environments, but some of the structures in these valleys could only have been formed by subglacial eruptions of lava. The main vent itself has become the hallmark of what Fagradalsfjall means. With its vibrant display of color, it truly is a beautiful valley mountain.
Happy New Year to Valur, Art & Polly & all your family & friends. I hope you are gonna show your fireworks display for New Years cos most of the ones here have been cancelled due to covid. My highlight from this year has been watching your volcano during all my waking hours. I hope you get a nice pleasant volcano that we can all watch together next year as well. Amazing and colorful views at the last of the newscast!! Black lava, white snow and orange sun!!! I think Polly was a little disappointed when you hid her ball in your jacket. Later you’ll have to explain to her why did you do that…
Happy New Year Valur, Polly and company! Your reports from Iceland have been a breath of fresh air from a rather dreadful year here in the United States. So glad to have discovered you all at Reykjavik Grapevine and discovered so much about Iceland that I never knew or would have guessed. Here's to a happier New Year for all of us!
The way the light changes during the video could easily confuse people that you started the report in the morning and then walked around untill sunset...Must visit Iceland in the winter sometime to see these day long sunsets> Thanks again, give Polly a pet for me.
When serving at NAS Keflavik, always made it a point of going outside at noon (unless a gale was blowing) during winter. If you missed the sun at noon then basically you came to work in the dark and left in the dark. PS - Some nights you could see the Northern Lights and hot springs were a relaxing soak day or night.
Does Polly ever bark? I don't recall her ever making any noise in all the videos I have watched. Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year to Valur, Polly, Art, Josie Anne and all the staff at The Reykjavík Grapevine!
2021 had been an interesting year for me too. I found this channel here and started to love your way of presenting the volcano eruption in Geltin.... (I will for sure write it wrong, so I stop here). Breathtaking, stunning photography. Lovely work, Art. Thanks Valur. You've taken the time to give us all an update on the expected volcanic activity. Seems likely according to what's being reported. We'll soon see. Many loves to Polly and all the best to the Grapevine team for 2022.
Thank you Valur, Polly and Art. What an amazing farewell vlog to 2021 and for taking me and probably thousands more across the globe, back to the volcano area that originally intrigued us with the wonderful country and culture of Iceland. You should be, and I hope are are at least, partially funded (like PBS in the USA) by the government! Thanks for showing Iceland's amazing terrain in the winter sunlight, together with Polly posing for her publicity shot (hello mugs and tee-shirts!!!) and the final drone view of the "dead" crater which is so gorgeous and better than any end of year fireworks. Altogether just wonderful photography, staging and dialogue. Thanks finally, for "hoofing it" up those hills this past year for the best ever shots. PS: ONLY because of you I searched tourism sites so I can visit Iceland next year.
Thank you for this very interesting update! What I missed were also informations about the earthquakes NNE of Krýsuvík, where I personally also could think about a chance for eruptions. Am I wrong with my thoughts? But most important is a Happy New Year to all with health, no disasters and no war! 🙏
What beautiful photography. Art is an artist. There were many shxxxx things about 2021 but I think one of the best things of 2021 was watching the volcano as it grew and evolved. And to have the great reporting of the Reykjavik Grapevine team. Discovering this channel was a good thing too. I loved the discussion on Brexit in the pub, and Valur’s efforts at scoring darts. Wishing everyone on the team a very Happy New Year when it arrives. May you go from strength to strength.
So, I'll always remember 2021 as the year when I knew the news in Iceland at least as well as the news at home because of your reports. The year when I kept surprising people by telling them what the Icelandic approach to Covid was. The year when I'd leave my computer on all night so I could check the live stream of Fagradalsfjall if I happened to get up. Now if only we could find a way to sponsor another nice, friendly tourist eruption ... Have a brilliant new year! The fireworks are just starting here (in Australia )
Happy New Year to you all at the Grapevine, thank you so much for your stellar reporting and wonderful showcasing of Iceland's beautiful landscape! I'm a sucker for sunrises/sets, so I was very happy seeing it in this video!
Great filming. We have not seen the area around Fagradalsfjall at this time of year before, with the sun very low like this. I distinctly recall the night in March when the glowing lava first broke the surface here, releasing the pressure as the recorded earthquakes subsided. But I also remember that the exact timing and location were different to what the geologists were estimating. Now I notice that there was a 3.4 at Bardabunga under the Vatnajokull ice-cap on Wednesday, as if the energy for an eruption is spreading, not focussed on a single location. Which may mean that nothing at all happens on the surface: it is impossible to accurately predict these things, I believe! With many thanks for all your fantastic coverage this year and best wishes to all at RG for 2022.
Bardabunga is still recovering after the recent past eruption and also recharging ready for the next, these earthquakes have been happening with a certain regularity and will continue to do so. It's a long way from this area, several hundred KM.
Very well explained and illustrated. I have long wanted to visit an erupting volcano but covid and other circumstances have made that unlikely. However, your newscasts this year have let me do so vicariously and I am very grateful. Valur and Polly are utterly endearing and Art's photography is majestically stunning. Keep up the good work and Happy New year to you all.
A few months ago, there were cracks opening up on the remains of Theater Hill near the old vent but nothing seemed to happen there. Has anyone mentioned that as a possibility for the new eruption? Happy New Year!
I wish all the team a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Value you give lots of interesting information in your wonderful Icelandic accent. Art says nothing but his camera work shows us beautiful scenery and townscapes. He topped of this episode with that wonderful view of Polly standing still for once, silhouetted again what little sunlight is avaliable.
Happy New Year to everyone at the Grapevine! The Sun is amazing in this video, and so is the light, once the Sun is behind the camera operator. Beautiful. Polly and the Sun starting @ 15.46 is also lovely. Bravo!
Valur is a consummate professional. You can tell, since he is able to keep reporting while the utterly adorable Polly dances in front of him saying "Pay attention to me!"
It'll be a new eruption because it wont be in that same cone. solidified lava tubes are harder to melt thru and reactivate than regular earth is. All those EQ's are from the magma pushing through new areas in the vicinity.
The photoghraphy of this video is just astonishing. Great place you select to film, perfect timing and day. Love those drone shots. Thanks for all the information.

A few months ago, there were cracks opening up on the remains of Theater Hill near the old vent but nothing seemed to happen there. Has anyone mentioned that as a possibility for the new eruption? Happy New Year!
Nice update and beautiful cinematography! A very Happy New Year to All! See you in 2022!
Watch out for a red light in the sky at night it should lead to the new volcano.
🥳 Happy New Year 🎊🎆🎈 to you and Polly!!! Great information and drone shots.
Happy New Year, TRG!! I am enjoying all of your content. Thank you for making the past year an adventure every day.
Thank you for shwoing us this beautyful landscape. Greetigs from Germany.
Happy New Year to everyone at the Grapevine!
The Sun is amazing in this video, and so is the light, once the Sun is behind the camera operator. Beautiful. Polly and the Sun starting @ 15.46 is also lovely. Bravo!
Thank you for the update and the nice video. Happy new year for you Valur, Art and Polly of course and your family. Greetings from Holland.
We're here very close to the volcano site...it could go off at any moment now!
Polly needs some booties to be running on that volcanic rock 😄
Happy New Year Valur, Polly and Grapevine Community!
Valur is a consummate professional. You can tell, since he is able to keep reporting while the utterly adorable Polly dances in front of him saying "Pay attention to me!"
The Dog is so cute. Do you already know more about the glacier run from Grímsvötm
Beautiful photography. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for getting such important information to the citizens.🙏🏻
We never see any wildlife in the area of these hills and mounts. What type would be found if someone camped overnight in those areas?
Thank you so kuch for this amazing episode ✌🏻
Beautiful footage at the end!
Gleðilegt Nýtt ár að Valur og Polly❤🐶

Been eating candy from your shop. Some of it is a little different but all tasty so far.
Thank you for the update and Happy and safe Newyear. 🙂
Stay safe my .fiends, have a great New Year
The best scenery footage of any video of Iceland I have ever seen. Well done Art
Happy New Year!! And Happy New Year to Polly!
It'll be a new eruption because it wont be in that same cone. solidified lava tubes are harder to melt thru and reactivate than regular earth is. All those EQ's are from the magma pushing through new areas in the vicinity.
I thoroughly enjoy all of your newscasts and especially enjoyed the scenery on this one.Valur and Polly make a great team. Happy New Year!
Who else subscribed for the cute dog and his ball.
Gleðilegt nýtt ár frá Minnesota til ykkar allra í Reykjavík Grapevine!
Takk fyrir það, og sömuleiðis!
Happy New year to you all at the Grapevine. 🍻
