    Awesome! Screen masks are a game changer, and so cheap and easy. Don't know why they haven't caught on in a big way with the home theater crowd. People will do every last upgrade and room modification, yet skip something so simple and effective. I get so much joy from looking at a movie framed in nice and crisp with no grey bars. You get to experience a beautiful scope screen, floating in space, framed in perfectly, while still retaining an equally beautiful 16x9 screen without compromise. I REALLY miss masks on a switching aspect ratio movie, but I console myself and try to remember that the rest of the home theater world watches ALL of their movies with grey bars.
    At my local theater, they have masks, but they stopped putting them down. Of course they're using an expensive professional projector, but the movie will be better-looking at home, simply because of the masks I use.
    I've tried a few times to come up with a hing based system, but could never get it to work. Like what you did there! Would be sweet if automated, but that's not too bad they way you have it.

    Great Job! This is how masking should be done. I don't understand why some people mask their screens from side to the side which essentially makes the screen smaller. Top and bottom (like yours) is my preferred way because it still maintains the large screen size and it's also great for films with shifting aspect ratios (Christopher Nolan films, Mission Impossible Fallout etc.). Automation masking would be awesome but your DIY is still fantastic!

    • @aaromon43
      @aaromon43  3 года назад +2

      thanks! i think the majority of projection setups run CIH (constant image height), as opposed to what i went with (constant image width), which is why many sacrifice height vs width. i'm with you 100% though, i absolutely love having the widest image possible and being able to "open" up the screen fully for extremely immersive 16:9 content (e.g., imax footage from nolan films, documentaries, high quality tv shows, etc.).

      @aaromon43  3 года назад

      i have the largest possible scope image (wall to wall width). i added the height back to the screen which now has me back at 16:9 (~160"). with masking, the scope image is the exact same size as the scope screen i was using prior to this one, except now if i want open matte and the "imax @ home" feeling, i can. i now have constant image width, not height. best of both words.

    Hey John ,
    Quick question what is the distance from the screen to your projector? Awesome set up by the way man ! I know you have had many subwoofers over time . i run a ~19' throw distance which is larger than most but it's not by choice it's really the only way to pull off that size screen in my room (which means i have to run the projector harder than most). i think either of those subs you would be very happy with but i would also highly consider the jtr captivator 2400 too. i feel a tad biased recommending jtr over those 2 but i would given i've heard a ported 18" psa sub (which was great!), i owned multiple rythmiks and now the cap4000. the captivator is just in the next tier above imo (if you're chasing ULF..).

    I had a 4:3 ratio projector and I hate the grey light, I just fix it by adding 2 black tapes up and down outside the lens where the light goes out without touching the lens. I solve the problem from 4:3 to 16:9,... and for the 2.39:1 ratio, I always play movies on vlc, so there is an option to turn 2.39:1 to 16:9 aspect, and you will notice no difference. The movie plays full aspect of 16:9.

    Great video. I'm so glad you did a update as I've really been enjoying your build and have watched the past videos many times. I really liked your solution for masking the 16.9 screen for 2:40.1 as I've been debating whether to go 2 40.1 and mask for 16.9 or your way. I want to game and watch 16.9 stuff and 2.39.1 movies so your solution is perfect. I've been worried going with a fixed 2.40.1 screen and the 16.9 being too small when masked. Awesome job, looking forward to your next update.

      thanks so much, glad you have enjoyed my ramblings haha. 2.4 really is ideal for (most) movies, but it's so nice to have the giant 16:9 screen for using the screen as a computer monitor, 16:9 movies, gaming, etc. when i had the dedicated 2.4 screen i felt like i cheated myself out of other uses of the system but now with the giant screen & masking i feel like it's the best of both worlds. i think i'll try to make a more detailed video of how i made the masking including material & putting it together in hopes that it helps someone else thinking about doing the same. i thought about doing that for such a long time and it finally clicked one night. i didn't mention in the video but the top masking panel i have neodymium magnets in the panel & ceiling and when the panel hits the ceiling it clicks into place, it's pretty far out. i'll have to show that better in the next video. best of luck with your projects!

      @@aaromon43 i really love your solution. From what I've understand in your videos your MLP is the front row of seats and when you watch a scope movie to get the immersion feeling you seat there. But now that you have the 16x9 image and is taller than your scope movies do you still seat in the middle front row or do you go back to the second row since the image is taller? i ask bc i've read that it is recommended to have less than 15 degree for vertical watching a image so it won't bother you looking up and down . Is this real ? This will be my first dedicated HT and will like to get the right screen for the job.

    • @aaromon43
      @aaromon43  4 года назад

      @@MrEpaulino26 thanks! to your question, it really depends on what you're watching. nature documentaries, slower paced movies (think joker), certain tv shows like the expanse (seeing huge epic space battles is awesome!) look incredible on a giant 16:9 screen. however as you suspected, there's plenty of content that is shot too close up to the actors faces, and/or fast camera movement and suddenly the screen is too large to enjoy the content at ~13' away. so yes, i either move to the 2nd row or watch it upstairs on my tiny 52" tv haha. most big blockbuster movies are (usually) still shot & released in scope (variable aspect ratio imax stuff notwithstanding), so not usually a problem. i LOVE being able to have the choice to switch between the two though. and sure i could have kept just the scope screen and played with the zoom on the projector to get a constant-image-height and much smaller 16:9 image but that's just too small (for me), would rather the picture a little larger than i prefer than have it too small.

    You briefly mentioned if when you sell your home...heh...something HT people might overlook. We spend the money we do to get THE HT room we want. Or close to. Only to one day having to make chances to sell the home. Keeping in mind there will be buyers who might not want a HT room. What's wrong with them right? But they exist. :) So depending on how much we spent on just creating t he room (forget the electronics/seating costs)...what if we sound proofed the room? Not sure how much that would run roughly if we do that "right"...then we have to remove the acoustic treatments from the walls...maybe close up the rectangular "hole" in that one wall where the screen//speakers were...basically turn the room into a "normal shoebox shaped room". You almost feel like only selling the home to "HTophiles". But you can't do that or shouldn't. As the goal is to make as much money as possible from the sale. (w/o spending money to make the sale happen) Catch22.
    Hate to be the guy who had a custom Theo Kalomirakis HT room done. Costing $1-2M. :) Then finding out the buyer wants the home....But W/O the HT room...hehe...

    Masking. Screen/projector people get so caught up in getting some kind of masking mechanism in. Whether it's a pice you lift into place secured by velcro, a string pulley or an automated 2 way or 4 way from Seymour or Steward or Si....if you're watching a film like The Dark Knight that switches back and forth between 16:9 and 2.35:1...there will be image bleed over...either on the top/bottom or L/R...so what does one do then? Live with it. Till some company makes a motorized 4 way masking screen that will on it's own change aspect ratios when it detects markers in the films..."just" needs a CPU and a simple program. Not sure if a film like DK actually has markers at the start over every aspect ratio change.
    I just rewatched Batman Begins last night. One aspect ratio. Don't recall if the 3rd DK movie has one aspect ratio or 2...DK Rises. Why did Nolan do that with DK anyway??? :)

    Just want to say definitely a nice system but I'm a projector owner as well and I'd say 60% of the reason why I bought a projector was for the size and the other 40% is to watch native movies that are native 2.35 with no bars . But the 1992 Aladdin is not native 2.35 it's native 1.85:1 . So what did you do to it stretch it out? I always like to watch my movies in their native aspect ratio so if it's a native 2.35 It should be electronically stretched for a panamorph lens if its -1.85 then you take the lens away that's what I do anyways get back to me thanks overall cool..

    There are better, cheaper and easier ways of removing black bars. As you seem handy with diy projects, you can make an anamorphic lens using a pair of crystal wedge awards like this: www.crystalblanks.com/catalog/wg-152050
    It's super easy and there's tons of info online. I used that diy method for my first anamorphic lens and it worked really well. It's easier and cheaper to use motorized curtains to mask the side borders for 16:9 content (like they used to at the theater). Hiring a robotics company to make custom actuators would almost definitely cost way more than anyone in the diy space could stand.
    Or, just put black velvet around the screen and use a projector with lens memory (plus curtains for the sides). Also, replace the white screen material with a gray screen or you'll never get great blacks with any projector. There's no such thing as black light. Projectors rely on total darkness for blacks. A diffuse white screen lights up the room too much to retain decent contrast.
