  • @FlashGeiger
    @FlashGeiger 5 лет назад +4

    I guess it wasn't enough of an emergency to want to land at Iqaluit. I think the runway there is long enough to land anything since they did the cold soaking tests of the 380 there, I think. Probably not a lot of other facilities, though.

    • @ThePulmentinum
      @ThePulmentinum 5 лет назад +12

      Iqaluit is in the middle of nothing. If they landed there the passenger recovery plan would have been more expensive and complicated. B77w is rated ETOPS330 so in theory they had enough time to complete the flight to KORD and in practice the flew roughly 2 hours single engine to a more served airport to better accomodate passengers and crew. Remember that in case of a diversion the emergency does not end when you land but you also have to feed amd accomodate passengers and carry them to their original destination.

    • @benoithudson7235
      @benoithudson7235 5 лет назад +8

      The towns are the same size, and roughly equally remote. You can drive to Happy Valley, unlike Iqaluit -- but it's 1500 km to the nearest city, so basically you have to fly. Iqaluit and Happy Valley are about equidistant to Montreal, we're closer to everything West of there.
      Airlines divert here without issue. We've had two 787s divert here in 2018: Air Canada on medical on July 1 (I thought maybe it was a promotional thing for Canada day when I saw it coming in for landing, but no), Speedbird on smoke in the cockpit in September -- I thought it was our Amazon deliveries (Cargojet flies their 767 here nearly every day) but looked up and realized it was a bit bigger and shinier. There was also a Swiss 787 that lost an engine in February 2017 (I wasn't in town for that one), and I'm sure several others in the past.
      The AC flight turned around in an hour or so, no biggie. I understand a flight attendant just got some medical attention before going on. It was a bit odd to have medical emergency fly in to here given how often we medivac people *out*, but we do have a regional hospital.
      The brits had the passengers deplane overnight and leave on a new plane in the morning. The emergency aircraft left just a few hours later, after getting checked out.
      Swiss kept the passengers on-board overnight because at the time we didn't have customs (the new terminal opened August 2017, they landed in February 2017). They sent a new plane to pick them all up the next day. That emergency plane needed a new engine, so they shipped one up on the An-225, replaced the engine in town, and flew the bird home.

    Is PANPAN the same as MAYDAY and it’s just a regional thing or do they mean different things?

    • @pfeilspitze
      @pfeilspitze 5 лет назад

      MAYDAY is major problem with the aircraft; PANPAN is something that could lead to a problem but isn't yet, or something that's a problem not with the aircraft (like a passenger medical issue).
      This flight could maintain altitude, fly headings, etc -- it was basically fine so long as it didn't also lose the other engine. Single-engine is probably the most practiced flight issue for twins.

    One day last week I saw something strange going on with a Federal Express Jet. I apologize but I can't remember what day it was. There's a certain flight path that the FedEx Jets come in on to land at Alliance Airport, which is located north of Fort Worth Texas. Well, this jet was flying south, away from the airport, and an altitude low enough that I could see the windows on the plane ... extremely low...very unusual. I was driving on the freeway, but I tried to slow down enough to be able to watch it. It made a wide turn and then headed north, basically on what would be the normal flight path, only extremely low altitude, and I assume it was going back to land. Just curious if you knew anything about what was going on with the plane?

    How come some pilots call out a pan-pan and others call out a mayday for an engine out? Is it because of the nature/condition of engine failure?

      Pan for mechanical problem, mayday for imminent danger.

    • @FoxDren
      @FoxDren 5 лет назад +2

      A mayday is only meant to be used when there is imminent risk to life and limb. Pan-pan is for any other emergency that needs to be dealt with immediately but there is NOT imminent risk to life and limb

    • @Screwbob1711
      @Screwbob1711 5 лет назад +3

      The pilot in this case says "problem with the right hand engine" which implies it's likely still functioning and providing thrust but not operating as expected or within normal limits, so a "pan-pan" is suitable, as it could be a developing problem and may later be upgraded to a "mayday". If it was an outright engine failure then "mayday" is the only sensible call. Search for a youtube video of a Thompson bird strike and you can hear the British pilot in that case immediately call "mayday" as it was an outright engine failure (rather than a developing 'problem').

    • @jannaszkowski8716
      @jannaszkowski8716 5 лет назад +1

      It means that crew received weather information Tango. Check in google what ATIS is.

    • @rubenvillanueva622
      @rubenvillanueva622 5 лет назад +2

      Ben Hollingbery ATIS, Automatic Terminal Information Service. This information contains the latest weather report for the airport. Runway information and any other important info that may be of use to the pilot. Each report is given a letter code, starting with Alfa, Bravo, etc. Basically, the alphabet. When the pilot states he has Bravo, he means he has the weather. Often, the weather report may change since he last listened to it, so if he states he has Bravo, and that is no longer current, the controller would then issue the latest current weather, Charlie.

    • @gregorykusiak5424
      @gregorykusiak5424 5 лет назад +1

      Ruben Villanueva I’m pretty sure the letters are for regular METAR report intervals, and don’t change for SPECIs. If the weather changes from the issued report, you’d be notified in flight when talking with a controller.

    • @1320fastback
      @1320fastback 5 лет назад +3

      sometimes an airline will move an airplane completely empty just because they need it at a different airport in the morning, that is a ferry flight.

    • @rubenvillanueva622
      @rubenvillanueva622 5 лет назад +2

      NorthernChev Sometimes aircraft have to be flown to a maintenance facility, with important inoperative equipment. For example, an engine, no radios, or other internal equipment necessary (navigational receivers) etc. An FAA flight permit authorization is required and when issued that "Ferry Flight" is done.

  • @TakeDeadAim
    @TakeDeadAim 5 лет назад +7

    The second you issue a "Pan" or especially a "Mayday"...you no longer REQUEST clearances, vectors, speeds, altitude's etc... At that point you (if time allows in the case of a Mayday) are now simply declaring where you're going and it's ATC's job to ensure you don't hit anything metal or granite. At that point you become the most important airplane on their "scope" so ATC is already (if they're good) starting to move people around and anticipating a diversion, descent etc... All this "request" is a waste of time.

    • @NetAndyCz
      @NetAndyCz 5 лет назад +22

      I am pretty sure that applies to mayday only.

    • @marbe166
      @marbe166 5 лет назад +12

      You could do that, but you don't have to. If you have no maneouvering problems you don't need to, then it is better to request and ATC will comply as much as possible. You have top priority once you utter pan-pan-pan or mayday-mayday-mayday.

    • @rubenvillanueva622
      @rubenvillanueva622 5 лет назад +15

      TakeDeadAim This must be new, When an aircraft declares a Mayday or Pan, he is handled as a priority. The pilot relays all pertinent info concerning the emergency to ATC. ATC, will assist him by providing all headings, vectors, and special requests. If the flight is on an airway, ATC, may start to clear the airspace below him, if not he will be taken off the airway for descent. Pilots must still request what they need, and it is approved by ATC. Never have I had an emergency go flying about the sky doing whatever, it is a team effort between pilot and controller to get the aircraft down safely.

    • @Shumayal
      @Shumayal 5 лет назад +17

      There's a reason why he is flying that plane and you aren't.

    • @TakeDeadAim
      @TakeDeadAim 5 лет назад

      I'm not saying he just starts barking orders at ATC, however in reality all he needs to do is let them know where he's going, when he's going to be there and it's ATC's job to ensure his directives are complied with. There's really no "as much as possible" to it. The Pan or Mayday has priority regardless...the "Pan" meaning it's just not as urgent and there's more time to handle the "requests". If the pilot chooses to phrase it as a "request" then so be it...however it's a request which has only one real answer..."Wilco".

      And aviation is based on maritime rules and terminology. Seriously look up the terms and you will maybe learn that they are used in aviation as well for rather obvious reasons. And many people use left and right on ships too because they have never learned the difference between port and starboard.

      There are many factors that go into a diversion, there are rules that must be followed from the manufacture and company procedures . Also the pilots must take into consideration Fuel, Time, Weather, Altitude and the extent of the problem. Most companies and crews would say its better to be safe than sorry, they made the right decision.
