What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo, which is Spanish for Fifth of May, is also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. A holiday that is celebrated in the US and parts of Mexico, honouring the 1862 victory of the outnumbered Mexican military over the French forces.

TOMMY'S MARGARITA
The Tommy's Margarita originates from the Tommy's Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco and was first created back in the 90s. An excellent variation on a classic Margarita with strong notes of sweet agave.
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml Herradura Blanco Tequila (2 oz)
- 30ml Fresh Lime Juice (1 oz)
- 15ml Agave Syrup (0.5 oz)
METHOD
1. Rim glass with salt by moistening edge with spent lime
2. Combine the 3 ingredients into your cocktail shaker
3. Shake with ice
4. Strain over fresh ice into a double old fashioned glass
5. Garnish with spent lime
LA PALOMA
La Paloma has a shrouded history with no proven origin. It is highly likely that it originally came from Mexico in the mid to late 1900s before migrating to the US. Both Squirt and Jarritos are popular brand choices of grapefruit soda in the US and Mexico whilst I opted for a homegrown soda from CAPI. La Paloma translates to "the dove".
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml El Jimador Reposado Tequila (2 oz)
- 15ml Fresh Lime Juice
- 120ml Grapefruit Soda
- Pinch of Salt
METHOD
1. Add the tequila and fresh lime juice to a high ball
2. Fill with ice
3. Top with grapefruit soda
4. Garnish with spent lime or grapefruit wedge
5. Finish with a pinch of salt
HIBISCUS EL DIABLO
A classic El Diablo consists of tequila, creme de cassis and ginger beer. The hibiscus variation calls for the sticky, sweet and floral hibiscus syrup in place of the cassis.
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml El Jimador Reposado Tequila (2 oz)
- 15ml Fresh Lime Juice (0.5 oz)
- 15ml Hibiscus Syrup (0.5 oz)
- 120ml Ginger Beer (4 oz)
METHOD
1. Add the first 3 ingredients to your high ball
2. Fill glass with ice
3. Top with ginger beer
4. Garnish with spent lime and hibiscus flower
BLACKBERRY, VANILLA & JALAPENO SMASH
A spicy combination of tequila, blackberry and jalapeno. The vanilla notes of the tequila are also paired with the vanilla syrup for a rich, citrusy and spicy tequila drink.
INGREDIENTS
- 60ml Herradura Blanco Tequila (2 oz)
- 30ml Grapefruit Juice (1 oz)
- 22.5ml Fresh Lime Juice (0.75 oz)
- 22.5ml Vanilla Syrup (0.75 oz)
- 4 Blackberries
- 4 Slices of Jalapeno
METHOD
1. Muddle the jalapeno first
2. Add blackberries and lightly muddle
3. Add remaining ingredients
4. Shake with ice
5. Strain over crushed ice into a double old fashioned glass
6. Garnish with spent lime, chilli flakes and blackberry

Most people--- :| Steve shaking his drinks--- :D :D :D
Me after 3 drinks----:(
A bartender is required to smile while shaking a drink, after all you should show people that you enjoy what you do:D
Get you someone that looks at you the way Steve smiles when shaking a drink.
#facts lol
😆
Thanks Steve! My Mexican wife appreciated the historical accuracy at the start - drives her crazy when people think it’s Mexican Independence Day!! We use agave syrup in our margaritas - a great combo. The Paloma is a classic, especially at weddings, apparently - not something that Mexicans would drink on a standard night out. But, you need the salt - Mexico is all about the lime and salt!
Cheers Colin! I learned a lot whilst preparing this one.. Cinco de Mayo isn't widely celebrated/known in Australia..
@@StevetheBartender_ I never knew that this holiday existed.
@@SCP-zp8jz its celebrity in the US than Mexico. At least from what my family tells me aha but hey it gives everyone an excuse to drink lol
As a Mexican American I appreciated it too! Thanks for spreading accurate info 💜! Also I plan to make the blackberry, vanilla, jalapeño one tonight 😁
Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo
JT 6188 I wholeheartedly appreciate the historical accuracy of this comment..
Bahaha, I'm in stitches! 🤣
Omg, brilliant
What about the word "Cinco" from Spanish that means five? I don't know about your historical fact but sounds good too hehe
@@supremaciaprimata It's a "play" on words....
I find it fascinating how this man cannot shake a drink without smiling :D
I never did previously.. something happened about 6 months ago.. and now it's a thing #shakeandsmile
Steve the Bartender what happened 6 months ago?
it's like someone who looks right at you eating a banana.
@@StevetheBartender_ that smile made me a subscriber 😊👍🏼
Ikr it’s so irresistible if he was serving me I’d definitely be wet for him 🙂🤤🤤😍
As someone that love tequila, this is one of my favorite videos. The spicy blackberry, vanilla and jalapeño smash sounds like a match made in Heaven! Great video as usual! Cheers.
Cheers TTBG! It has a good level of spice to it... nice tingle on the lips, vibrant blackberry and delicious vanilla notes.. 😍
@@StevetheBartender_ Thanks for the additional info. I guess I will need to go to buy jalapeños soon. :@)
Fun fact, we grow tons of berries in Jalisco, you can get lots of blackberries here, high quality and quite cheap when they're in season.
So foreign to anything I've ever seen or heard of before. As someone who also loves tequila, its on the list to 'nervously' try!
I’m a spanish speaker and i aint even mad at the “Holla-pay-no” Australian charm 🇦🇺 cheers from Atlanta 🥂
Hey steve me and my girlfriend started watching you for your awesome cocktails. Now I think my girlfriend watches you not only for your cocktails but your smile when you shake the drinks 👍
Keep up the good work 👌
Haha thanks Sir Suitee!
He manages to say jalapeños with the “h” sound but not jarritos with an “h” 😂 idk why that made me laugh
Yeah, I’ve been pulled a few times.. not overly familiar with the Spanish language here in Australia..
Steve the Bartender haha all good, and quite understandable. Quick lesson: most of the time in Spanish, the letter “J” is pronounced as an “H”👍🏽 love the videos, and the fact that you respond to some comments!!
Ha-La-Pennios for Jalapeños, Ha-Ri-Tohs for Jarritos, Errawdoora for Herradura and He-Madoor for Jimador 😜
I do the same and I’m HISPANIC
Mitch De Jong jjjjj
Everytime he smiled!! Omg my heart!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍
I made all of these except Tommy’s last night for my wife on Mother’s Day. She loved the Hibiscus Diablo and BlackBerry margaritas. Looking forward to other cocktails. I’ve been following all your recipes. Thanks for sharing.
Watching these videos is always the highlight of my day. Gets me excited to try out new recipes. Oh, and I like Steeve too. He is the man I want to be
I tried the smash and it was delicious! You would never have guessed the flavors would work together like that but it was wonderful
quality of these videos man, keep getting better and better!!! 😍😍😍
loved the production quality on this one, Steve!
The SMILE😫😭😭IT GETS ME EVERY TIME lmaoo!!!
I just love that smile whenever you start shaking your cocktail! Keep up with that Steven,
You are absolutely KILLING IT Steve.
I made the blackberry, vanilla and jalapeno smash, but I'm not such a spicy girl, so I substituted the jalapeno with a some pepper flakes, and WOWSAH!!!! The perfect spice proportion, smokey vanilla and sweet were perfection in a glass! This can become a regular whenever a blackberry is available. Thanks for this one!
The editing is really good on this one... THE QUALITY JUST KEEPS ON RISING!!!!
Thanks mate! Spent a bit of extra time on this one. It some said too many close ups / slow mos!
Love your stuff man
The quality of your videos has really taken off over the last few months. The edits are so so amazing. The B-roll is just crisp. Great work Steve!
Thanks FB! Much appreciated.. I enjoy taking a little more time for the edit :)
The last two look exciting! Will be trying them very soon. Thx Steve!
Perfect timing for this vid, got a few bottles knocking around
All of these drinks look delicious! Cant wait to try them all. Love the Shake and Smile. Cheers Steve 👍
Love how u tried them straight , respect
I'm drooling now.....those tequila
mixers will be on this weekend's menu at home. Great work Steve and thanks for the recipes. Cheers
Great video, loved the close up's/slow mo, tried the Blackberry, vanilla & jalapeno smash tonight and it was amazing! Keep the video's coming.
love the added close up shots in this 👌🏻
Some tequila recipes and that damn smile. It's gonna be a good day
this comment made me think of that 11 reasons why meme with "that's where the trouble began" someone should make that meme with steve
It’s very attractive though. Lol
Hi, I'm new to the channel so I had read some comments about the famous smile mid- shake, and now I have finally seen it! Yay!
My man came in with the history lesson at the beginning? Good job sir.
These are wonderful!
4 am and still patiently waiting for that smile. 🥱😊
I actually saw the post on fb before I checked my RUclips notifications, and man, they're pretty!
Todas están muy ricas.
Cheers from Mexico, thanks for your amazing content as always.
You're welcome Oscar!
truly enjoying the slow mo shots
Thanks Rosa! I think I overdid it a little on this one 🤣
Now this is a good tequila video. Glad they sponsored you. Salud and saludos from Tejas. Finally a video with more than just the standard tequila margarita. Great Job Steve. Also I prefer Jarritos.
Cheers Plascaso! Jarritos is great but it isn't readily available here... plus I do like supporting locals.. (and CAPI is great too!)...
Hearing steve say jarritos makes me smile almost as much as his smile 😃
That's how we pronounce it in Australia... I never knew it any other way.. 😂
I think I just found my favorite channel!!!
It was very nice of you to give out the correct information about Cinco de Mayo!
They look amazing mate. Can’t wait to try them.
I made all 4 of these because of this video. Bought both tequilas too. The last drink he made is one of my favorite drinks now, I loved it.
Thanks for clarifying that date!
Love your videos and appreciate the explanation of Cinco de mayo.
Grate Video Steve, you are Great! I see you from Argentina, it's funny when you speak in Spanish.
Just subscribed! Been watching for a good while and really love the content. These look great and will be adding them to my list of drinks to try. Thanks for putting these up!
We love you Steve.. Keep posting delicious drinks videos..
Thanks mate! Will keep em coming!
I love my Aussie bartenders :) Im not a big drinker until this quarantine when my local olive grove delivered some free limes and I made my first Moscow Mule cocktail with bunderberg ginger beer. Now Im stocking up on these goodies and I came here for the hibiscus flowers lol
Great video mate
Although this video is a few years old I just came across it. I have to say that the blackberry, vanilla and jalapeno smash is my new favorite cocktail. The heat and spice from the jalapenos work extremely well with the tequila. I build the cocktail as specified in this video, although I include 6 or 7 jalapenos instead of the recommended 4. I also don't strain any of the content, preferring the bits of blackberry and jalapeno in the drink itself. It's fantastic.
Thank you, Steve!
Saludos desde México. Me gustan mucho tus videos. En México bebemos tequila sin mezclar, lo llamamos "la bandera": 1 shot de tequila, 1 shot de limón y 1 shot de "sangrita". Los shots (caballitos) se beben por separado para apreciar el sabor del agave.
Beautiful video!
this new style is awesome
Thanks, glad you liked it! Took a bit longer >_
Capi Mixers are some of my favourites. They make an amazing Tonic and the Grapefruit Soda is always a favourite at Christmas time. Sweet sour and amazingly refreshing just by itself.
Capi is indeed fantastic. StrangeLove is another brand you should check out if you haven’t already!
Absolutely loved this video. 🤙
Thanks Johny! I put a lot more time into this one so I'm glad it worked :)
Loving the slo mo shots!!
Thanks AD!
loving the new camera work and editing
Thanks mate! Took a lot longer filming and editing on this one :)
omg! i love Tommy's! it's one of my favorite places in San Francisco. Love their Margs.
Love the new editing and shots, Steve you about to make it big time.
Haha thanks mate! Appreciate it.
Love the slo mo shots of the pours
The second one has the most appealing look to me. All seems great

Online cocktail recipes? Steve the Bartender.
Congratulations on having two big sponsors! On to try these cocktails!
Thanks Andrzej! An awesome opportunity to work with two great brands!
I was holding out 'til the end for some drunk Steve outtakes, lol
Great video, and I'll definitely be trying a few of these
Love the close-ups on the pours in this video, reminds me of Gred from HTD
Hey, Steve! I discovered your channel just two days ago and already love it! Thanks for nicely displaying the Tequila with these great cocktails, specially La Paloma (very famous in Mexican parties and clubs, when you don't want to drink straight tequila shots :P) ¡Salud!
little bit of history, you have my respect. Thank you
I like the use of jalapeno its practically unheard of to my friends and family! I use it in the tijuana rocket: jalapeno and red bell pepper muddle, agave syrup, pomegranate molasses, and tequila. Served in a chilled coupe glass
Very nice video, i like the slowmo' cuts 💪🏼
Cheers Manu! Glad you enjoyed them :)
Loving the b-roll/close up shots. Adds a nice visual flair to the video. Would love to see some high frame rate slow mo shots whenever your equipment allows for it.
Thanks Philip - good to hear you enjoyed it :)
Love that slo-mo!!!
I love all the artistic editing! Oh, and anything with tequila!
Thanks Tammy! Spent a bit more time on this one :)
3:01 the moment Steve remembered he was on camera
Hahaha, there's a certain look when I'm like "oh shit, smile!"
Awesome 😃👌 the Tommy and the jalapeño smash looks amazing ahhhh ide drink them all actually nice video love it cheers
Awesome video.
Gotta try that ginger beer cocktail!
Steve’s shake technique is legendary. 🥃🍸🍹
Thanks for sharing some great Cinco de Mayo cocktails. Of course we all will be drinking them year around. Cheers!! p.s. I like the slow motion on the pours. good look.
Happy cinco de Mayo! It’s also my granddaughters birthday, I’m cooking some nice steaks tomorrow, I’ll make some Tommy margaritas to go with. Thanks Steve.
Nice one Mike! Enjoy the Margaritas!
Love your work man. But i missed a star wars cocktail for may the fourth (be with you 😉)
Bro you’re getting so much better at editing and filming!
Cheers Morgan! The filming/editing aspect interests me a lot... but I want to be behind the camera filming instead of in front of it..
Nice garnish game Steve 😁👌
I appreciate the fun fact on my heritage ❤️
Excellent ingredients! I want to make all of these.
Hell yeah! Thanks!🤤
I'm gonna try La Paloma this evening😉. It's still the morning in France. Thank you for sharing good recipes
Let me know how it is! I want to try it too.
Palomas are delicious. You won't be disappointed!
Paloma is perfect for summer 😁
Dear Yori
Does not matter if still morning in France. Remember somewhere else in the workd is already 5:00pm, so you can start drinking anytime.
@@luisalbertocastro5940 you're right 😁
This is the type of content I want to see these days
I made this margarita yesterday on Cinco de Mayo. Best margarita ever! So fresh and smooth!! Yum!
Nice one! Glad you enjoyed the Tommy's!
Nice editing!!! Cheers. Also May the 4th be with you.
Thanks Jesse! This one took me a little longer but very happy with it :-)
Great line up. I got some hibiscus 🌺 syrup ready for the el Diablo!
Greetings from Puebla...!! You are awesome :)
thunderous applause!!!
🙌🙌🙌
I don’t know why but I love the slow mo camera in this video
Love the slow motion!!🍸🍸🍹🍹🍹🥃🥃🥃
Cheers! I enjoyed making that one... spent quite a bit of time editing it though!
I think i fell in love when he smiled :D
Great video as always, this guy knows Mexican drinks, indeed “Squirt” and “Jarrito” are the preferred soda for Palomas, I will add “Fresca” as well, Cheers!
We can get Jarrito here but not the other two (that I know of)..
Love the recipes. Gotta love hibiscus! Great video!!
Thank you! Yeah, hibiscus is delicious... to be honest, I haven't really used it much in cocktails until recently..
Lovely,,,....the videos are getting better and better
Thanks mate!
Love the Tommy Margarita! I added 1oz Agave for a sweet tooth. Fantastic.
Hey steve you should make each country most popular cocktails." Ps I'm from Canada". Cheers
What cocktails are the most popular in Canada?
@@StevetheBartender_ bloody lobster, BLT caesar, ginger rum shandy, Algoma apple Martini, those are a couple popular ones.
Ya, hey Dere...
