    The reason Mangini won is because he was like a piano player on the drums. He listened to everyone as much as he pushed for himself. He did more research, and knew exactly how the other members thought and played. He showed his licks and ambidexterity, but listened as well instead of trying to lead the original guys. He showed respect.

    I saw an interview with Magini and he said when Dream Theater emailed him and asked him to audition, he was able to see all the other drummers they had sent an invite to, so he practised hard all the stuff the other drummers were specialists at before he went to the audition. Genius!

  • @misfit2022

    I will confess before I make my comment I am not a huge DT fan but I can certainly appreciate the musicianship. Those that know my comments know I am a fan of 3 min punk rock but with regards to the drum battle going on below I can say from a drummers point of view when it gets to this level it is irrelevant who is better than whom as the quality being played is something one should just sit back listen and appreciate. These chaps certainly expect a lot from their drummer. One almighty audition and this chap does not disappoint. To those that have been knocking Mike Portnoy please re-listen as throughout all those awkward time signatures Mike Portnoy is phenomenal. From a drummers point of view I try not to listen too much as makes me realise the gap between the semi pros and the top of the pro tree and it is absolutely huge. Mike Mangini steps into Mike Portnoys shoes and I would say even having the ability to attempt that shows that this chap will very soon become a household name as to play in those complex patterns in those time signatures is worthy of admiration.

    • @corruptvirus
      @corruptvirus 9 лет назад +55

      its the audio engineer :[ his taste and mixing preferences are no where near as good as the guy who recorded and mixed systematic chaos or black clouds; i think his name is paul northfield

    • @HOLLOWOXDT1
      @HOLLOWOXDT1 9 лет назад +25

      Stev3n C the audio engineer is only executing what the Artist/producer wants Sound wise , i think MP knew what type of Drum sound he wanted and i think that all Pre-ADTOE prove that , i think it is about time for an outside producer in DT ( Steven Wilson ) ,

    • @corruptvirus
      @corruptvirus 9 лет назад +5

      That is actually a pretty good point HOLLOWOXDT1. Besides Mangini's kit has a whole different kind of tone to it. I do agree the new self-titled album is engineered pretty well just lacks the punch from Portnoy's kit :P

    • @DjackTheDjurst
      @DjackTheDjurst 9 лет назад +1

      I agree with him. Each company has their own ways. Portnoy used Tama drums, Sabian cymbals, LP Percussion and some other stuff I don't know about where Mangini uses Pearl drums and percussion, Zildjian cymbals and other stuff I don't know about. Each company has their own way, and to be honest, Zildjian and Sabian are basically the same thing, but Sabian formed after someone in the Zildjian left.

    • @MrBrady85
      @MrBrady85 9 лет назад +18

      Tama or pearl has nothing to do with it. Wood is wood. maybe there's a small difference in the bearing edge but that's about it. It's just the way it'srecorded. Bad producing in myopinion.Listen to the new Haken EP. The drums on the songs really breath and feel alive. if you listen the new dream theater album, the drums dont cut and just sound like a bunch of samples.

    It's really funny, as a musician for the last 30 years or so, I never really liked DT. I just "Didnt Get it". Since they got Mangini, and I have gotten to be older and hopefully wiser, Suddenly it all makes sense to me now, but only after laboring thru listening to them for countless hours just admiring the musicianship. They are a very deep technical band, and definitely not for everyone. Yes they are a bit over indulgent at times, but hey, when your some of the best musicians in the world, why the hell not. I would rather hear them riff for hours than any musicians I know personally. Now I have been going back thru the catalog, and im really digging alot of their earlier stuff as well. It just takes a while to get to like them, but once you understand where they are going musically, its easy to like.

    • @RodniDemental
      @RodniDemental 8 лет назад +1

      +Jim Owens I feel similarly. I was exposed to them ages ago, but only in the last 6 years or so have I been digging into their discography and discovering all the hidden gems on each album. It's interesting how some albums didn't stand out much at first and took longer to grow on me than others, but the more I listened, the more I heard the details and the better it gets! Weird because a lot of other bands I like it's the opposite; they have songs that stand out and seem like instant classics, but the more you listen, the more boring and repetitive it gets. lol
      But yeah, I'm, not knocking other bands or DT, everything has it's place but I have grown to enjoy most of the styles that DT offer, but it wasn't instant. ;)

      I can understand that Jim. I was introduced to them about 20 years ago by my bass player at the time.. he played me puppies on Acid from once in a live time (later learned it was an excerpt from the Mirror). after the first 10 seconds of hearing that groove, I fell in love with DT. I literally went out the next day and bought scenes from a memory.. to this day it remains one of my all time fav albums along with 6 degrees of inner turbulence. not only was it fated for me to experience this band but there progressive style carved its way into my own song writing and pushed me to develop on a more advanced level.. Its funny how things turn out. :)

    that chemestry.... i love that feeling, i can see they all had that special feeling with eachother that only musicians who play at this relaxed level of awareness can feel. with this particular drummer he seems like the only one out of all the ones that they tested to just simply "get it" serve the music at a micro and macro level when it calls for it, or when it requires a supple texture.... the smiles i could see it all... the communication was incredible. ONE would think that drummer has been with them for 5 years or more... but nope, he knows how to play like hes saying something, he speaks with fluidity, and doesnt do it in a way thats overcasting the original intent, simply beautiful work, its pretty much natural to him. 👌🏻💪🏼 ALSO THAT KEYBOARDIST 👌🏻👌🏻 hes quite the virtuoso, the entire band does it for the love of it, each band member can play like their saying something, what a nice band.

  • @milanw_
    @milanw_ 5 лет назад

    I just watched the whole other audition videos and it instantly clicked with Mike. His drumming was on point, no question, but there was something about the way he talked and essentially just ‘was’. You could feel he really really wanted to be with those guys, not in a fanboy kind of way but as someone on the same level as them, you could just feel his natural confidence that he can and want to contribute to this band, create art with them just for the sake of it. To me it looks like at the time of the auditions he was at a point in his life where he was full of energy waiting to be set free and this is exactly what DT needed. And despite his outgoing and extraverted nature there was absolutely no ego involved. When he got the phone call in the end he said “Thank you for trusting me” and this is actually concludes it perfectly. He seems to be not only an amazing musician but also an interesting, wise and inspiring human who is much in peace with himself.

    I would love it if Dream Theater decided one day to release the jam sessions they had that resulted in an album. This is basically how they come up with ideas.
