Are Aquarium Plant Seeds a Scam? - Aquarium Carpet Plant Seeds Test

  • Hi all,
A while ago I was given some packets of aquarium carpet plant seeds, and there is a lot of confusion around what these are.
These seeds are often marketed as Glossostigma, Monte Carlo and HC, some great aquarium carpetting plants.
These seeds are often sold in larger quantities for $1 or less, much cheaper than buying tissue culture or potted plants, however unfortunately rarely they are the plants they are sold to be.
    Hope you enjoy this video.

Considering many aquarium plants actually prefer to grow above water, I tell you what I would do if I wanted to grow HC for seeds; 1. Dry start and keep them in what is effectively a terrarium, 2. Put in natural part sun outside, or in a greenhouse, or use a high intensity red light if only using artificial light (plants grown under artificial light need red light to flower, or at least to flower prolifically even if it's a shade plant, such as impatiens).

I've had success with these seeds I sprinkled the seeds in my substrate and watered them initially with a spray bottle containing seachem fertilizer and water once a week and use water daily to keep soil moist. I made sure to cover the tank with plastic clear film to create a very humid environment. I used a standard l.e.d aquarium light. It grew very very well I would suggest making sure the seeds are in areas with enough light the areas getting more light than others will grow taller n spoil the look ther must be uniform light.

Youve confirmed my suspicions, but i do feel the need to add that the dry start might only give a false sense of security, if for instance you do that with HC Cuba and go for a low tech tank there's a good chance it'll slowly die after you've added water as it needs a good amout of co2 and good lighting. Basically what I'm saying is research your chosen plants to make sure you can meet their needs before you hand over the cash, I've consistently ruined my tank because I cleverly decided I could find a solution, when actually it turns out I'm just not experienced or knowledgeable enough to fool mother nature that well!

Hubby bought these $1 carpet seeds. He poured some into the 30 gal aquarium, thinking they would sink and magically grow. Nope. We were very brand new at having actual live growing things, as opposed to the neon plastics plants we’d had for years. Those seeds have a gel coating and they swirled and floated and eventually got sucked into the pump. I tried several ways to get them to grow and wound up putting substrate into a glass baking dish, sprinkling seeds , covering with plastic wrap and putting a light on them for well over 12 hrs a day. Eventually, they sprouted and grew enough that I could move them to our aquarium. They are not carpet plants. Some of the plants are 14-18 inches tall, some are only 2 inches tall. The ones that get the most light get the most height. I am not knowledgable in the name, but I know they aren’t carpet plants. I, too, spent about 6 months trying to figure out how to get them to grow. I have since bought many other plants for my little 30 gal tank, but I haven’t removed the $1 “carpet plants”. I put a ton of work into getting them to grow, and they are still in there. I kinda like them, like the mange covered 3-legged dog that shows up at your door uninvited, you just learn to love them.

So the billions of seeds sold in stores are what?
You do realize that all plants start as a seed right? And you do realize that plant seeds are a big business right?
You're thinking as a small single type grower, the company that is in the seed business is a lot different.
Just because you didn't get the seeds you thought you were getting doesn't mean they are all a scam.
There are people who sell fake watches but not all watches are fake.
Can you explain the huge bags of grass seeds they sell in stores all over the world?

    • @BlakesAquatics

I got 2 separate bags of what were supposed to be assorted aquarium plant seeds from two separate companies (Chinese, if that gives you any indication of what I'm about to say...), and they both turned out to be identical bags of some sort of small terrestrial grass, and nothing else. They seed readily under water, but they die after a while. I actually still have some of them growing above water in a peat substrate in a paludarium, and they actually do quite well there, but yeaaaah... Be leery of cheap seeds.

@@BlakesAquatics Yeah that is likely going to be the case here unfortunately. Although I have my fingers crossed that I can at least get something out of it even if I do use up all my seeds. An optimisstic me wants to blame the current cold weather.
Its unheard of to see staple brand companies like a Marineland or Eheim or any other well known companies gear have reviews in the thousands yet some aquarium seeds did and I fell for it.
When you think about it most people dont write +4 star reviews, usually reviews are written to express fustration, and as a cautionary warning to other buyers to not make the same mistake, most of the time if you bought an item that you were content with then you for the most part you continue on with your day, no need to brag or complain about anything.

I have a little cube tank for a Betta, that I carpeted via dry start method with dwarf hair grass, I'm very happy with the result thus far and have already had to trim it back twice.I realise you have to have patience as the dwarf hair grass took around six weeks before it was ready to add water and four weeks later it is still cycling, so more waiting, but it's worth being patient.😊

I have successfully sowed lobelia cardinalis, or cardinal plant, from seed. In the wild, this plant is not fully aquatic. It grows on land near lakes marshes and rivers. However it’s very tolerant of wet soil which is how it found it’s way into the aquarium hobby.
The ideal way to germinate this plant would be to sow in normal potting soil, let the seedlings grow for ~5 months on very wet soil, before you can acclimate them to gravel and eventually keep them in your aquarium.
