Some seeds sold as carpet plants that are actually hygrophila polysperma, you can actually sprinkle on top the water. They'll sink, start to sprout and actually root into the substrate, all under water. Probably not the best results though.
I’m halfway through the video and I feel overwhelmed to let you know this video is awesome. You’ve earned a subscriber, love this direct instruction method.
im a fan! i like the way you gave narrative and tutorials, very real and humorous :D unlike some who repeatedly reiterating statements, its time consuming and redundant :D
Wow.. much appreciated ! Just what I need. So we need a month after dry-planting Monte Carlo along Java Moss to start rooting, and another month to grow at its full potential.
Omg 😂😂😂😂 thank you so much for being real about this. I have just gotten into ponds and fish, aquatic plants and now aquascaping aquariums and I have not felt zen yet lol. I love it and find it interesting, love learning and finagling with things, but my husband swears I am hating every second! 😅I keep insisting it’s part of the process and it’s fine, I just haven’t reached the zen part of aquascaping yet! I just added seiryu stone to an already set up tank 😭 and it was probably four days of my messing with the rocks on the table before I decided on an idea, then another 40 minutes staring at them in the tank and moving them around. Still not 100% sold on the layout but I figure I just need more plants! But I’m glad I’m not alone and a pro like yourself can admit this is frustrating rather than pretending it’s so easy like you see in most videos. Also, can we talk about the aquascaping tweezers??? I am about to toss mine out the window, all they seem to do is hook on to my plants for dear life and bring them back out of the substrate! I’m usually griping and grumbling at the tank asking them “are you serious???” And end up jamming my whole arm in the tank to fix things 😅
This is really helpful. Thank you for your time of creating all your videos. I am learning from scratch and not knowing much, so this is really awesome to watch start to finish.
Great video, thanks! I am setting up a 75 gallon tank with a mangrove swamp theme, it will have a large school of Tiger Barbs. Being a cheap guy, I will be using the MadMark aquascaping method ie: collecting dead branches from the woods behind my house. The painting java moss on the "mangrove roots' is the perfect solution for me.
Great guide! one important tip though is that if you use plastic wrap make sure to leave a big enough gap. I got mold on my carpet during dry start, so i had to flood the tank earlier than i initially wanted. Worked out fine in the end though!
Man I’m excited. I’m waiting for my new waterbox clear 16 to come today. Now watching this I’m convinced to take this route for the aquarium. I did a small bowl from seeds so I’m sure it’ll work in the aquarium. I want to make a video log but I don’t know how to edit videos for RUclips.
You can grow HC as long as you can provide it with the popper environment. DIY will work and help. You'll get better results with pressurized Co2 only because you can control it easier. I don't know what 2x 20watt outdoor lamp means. I have to actually look at the specs.
I mean this light 20w waterproof IP66 LED Flood outdoor light White -20 watt (Pack of 2) www.amazon.in/dp/B079LCP4ZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qJYjBb7VDY22T
Thanks a ton for the video! I just got back from the LFS where I was going to only get some snails and did an impulse purchase of a 6g frag tank with a piece of driftwood and some shrimp soil to go with it. I've been watching video's here and there so decided to go with that route and steal some plants from my large tank. I learned a ton from this video so thank you!
I had the same issue with my aquascape, it eluded me time after time. Day after day. I drew what I wanted on paper at work and at home. Until I went outside and hiked and saw a fallen tree that landed almost like nature intended. I’m not a philosophical person, but in my understanding of nature by its very nature is chaotic. I finalized my aquascape as a fallen tree in a creek bed. It was perfect.
This is fantastic info, just in time as reference for my first planted tank, thank you! Also really like your glass in/our flow for filtration, I will look through your videos to see if you introduced them before, thanks for the great content! 👍
Great! I hope it helps! :) Let me know if any questions. For the lily pipes just go on ebay and search for "Lily Pipe". There are a few for different size hoses.
thank you for sharing. be sure to upload your next project using soil. ADA Amazonia, in my experience, is very high in substances that tend to burn stem plants.
Great teaching and tips, Sifu. Can you do "seeding" grass to form the carpet?. The question that I don't get answered is, "will that lasts once you fill the tank?". Thanks.
Thank you for the video, I’ve done DSM a week ago and it seems like some of my plants are browning. I have light on about 10 hours a day, I water them once in the morning and once at night, I have saran wrap covering the tank, feels humid when I put my hand inside the tank to give them a little air for 5 to 10 minutes. What am I missing that’s causing some of my clumps of plants to start browning?
Thanks for the video! Best RUclips video on DSM I think. Question: did you trim the HC right after you flooded the tank? Would you recommend trimming off ALL the leaves? Would that kill them? Thanks again.
Thanks for the compliment! :) Yes, it's highly suggested that you do. The HC would have grown pretty decently thick during the emersed period. So you want to give it a good trim so that the root don't rot. If you trim all the leave and just leave the stems intact it will grow back. It would probably grow back even more full if you did that. The problem is it take a lot of time to do that but it won't harm the plants. It would actually be better in the sense it'll grow out more.
Probably not. The carpet used here requires high co2 and if you try something like Dwarf Hair Grass that doesn't require high Co2, you need to compensate the time from dry to being flooded to ease them into losing all that co2 to grow. There are other techniques such as filling the tank slowly over weeks but I've never tried that.
Hi ...really appreciate your efforts...beautiful tank... Could you be kind enough to make a video on how to manage flow in terms of co2 distribution...please
Would a non dry start with co2 be just as good? Would love to see a side by side comparison without any trimming of plants or water change untill good water parameters. I'm considering doing this in my 2kL all natural aquarium with only sump and a full size bookshelf of hydroponic strawberries. Caveat, if my small scale trial run with water strawberries dont work.
What are your thoughts on slowly filling the tank over the course of a week or 2. This would allow the plants to slowly get used to the light levels being reduced by the water rather then just dropping it down immediately. Might also help the roots survive the flooding
That works as well. Different technique but the concept it that light will reach the carpet more intensely with lower water and grow out faster that way. The carpet growth will level out once the tank is almost full. Just make sure to start with the plant already grown submersed or you'll experience die back in the first 2 or 3 weeks.
I tried the dry start method after watching all your inspiring videos, and into my 2nd week after watching couple of other videos got into painting java moss (yoghurt method) on driftwood. Now I have white mould starting to show up in my driftwood alone. While it might be harmless, it's killing the looks. Please suggest a way to get rid of it?
If I pull my hard scape out of my current tank and use in the DSM, will the bacteria stay since I will be keeping the humidity high or will it die off during the method
Your videos are great. The details and little hint of jokes makes it an enjoyable and informative video. Liked DSM video, I am on my third week of DSM S Repens on 55 gallon. Few of the leaves are turning black, any ideas why ??? I would greatly appreciate your input .
It can be die back but I know my HC did that around the 3 week period and it just popped back and exploded after the 5th week. If it's not totally out of control, you might want to just wait it out. Make sure the lights not too close to the substrate either.
Is green slime algae that life-ending for a tank? So sad to hear it all went to waste. Was there no remedy for it? Love your channel, thanks for the GREAT vids.
No. I could have just blacked it out but at the time I was so busy and just didn't bother with it and the plants died off from its coverage but mainly just from neglect. Nothing went to waste. I learned tons from the process, I got footage to make the video and its nothing I can't just simply do again. It's only wasted when nothing came out of it.
Question… I also have a 20 long from the dollar a gallon sale big box store. I followed your link to the lighting and I just want to make sure it’s the correct one? The link leads to the 20” instead of 30”.
The glass tubing is lily pipes. Just do a search on amazon or ebay for "Aquarium Glass Lily Pipes" and tons of results should pop up. Thanks for watching! 😀
Do you recommend this method for a beginner? I will be setting up my first tank next month and want to grow a carpet, this looks very promising. I will be going all in with co2 and medium to high lighting
Hey dude can you plz help me choose a light to grow HC, I have a 50 cm tank . Which branded ones would be suitable ? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work your vids are great !
Subbed! Great tank, really came out nice. Maybe the algae was due to too much CO2? I'm thinking either that, or cut back the 10 hr light to 6 to 8... It's a learning phase for all of us.
The patience king, I would plant it and after 2 hours I would be like: "Ok, that's enough, time for water" lol
LOL Oh no. That probably wouldn't work well in this situation. ;)
Some seeds sold as carpet plants that are actually hygrophila polysperma, you can actually sprinkle on top the water. They'll sink, start to sprout and actually root into the substrate, all under water. Probably not the best results though.
This would be me lol

I've never heard of "painting" chopped up moss onto the rocks. Great idea!
Yeh it works great when doing it emerged. I wish it could be done in a filled tank!
The Water Box hi what the mixture of the chopped java moss? Is it only water and the moss?
trying to paint java moss in a filled tank is like trying to draw in midair, with a pencil

Great video man...
I've also tried to DSM moss with blender, little yoghurt, and brush it all to hardscape...
The result is amazing...
Yoghurt as in what we eat? Love to know more, why yoghurt?
yes, little bit plain yoghurt, RO water and riccardia moss...
Why Yoghurt though?
yoghurt / buttermilk is good for terrestrial moss. the moss feed on the bacteria produced by the yogurt. cmiiw
OH! Makes perfect sense! Do you use a lot? Or just a tiny bit?

Thanks for the video! Best RUclips video on DSM I think. Question: did you trim the HC right after you flooded the tank? Would you recommend trimming off ALL the leaves? Would that kill them? Thanks again.

I am definitely gon try this method. I hope this will work on seeds as well but will gonna do the moss painting.
It SHOULD work with seeds. I'm going to try that in the future project.
I have only ever gotten green slime algae when I use ADA aquasoil. Never considered it, but is that substrate the culprit?
Most likely. You'd have to keep on top of it and hit those WC when it looks like it's just spiking too much.
Would a non dry start with co2 be just as good? Would love to see a side by side comparison without any trimming of plants or water change untill good water parameters.

Make sure to switch to the 30" one. The amazon links sometimes links to a product with different options and lands on the wrong one.
Can I cultivate aquarium plants in my backyard? So that I always have a collection to use
Sure. As long as the plant can be grown both in and out of water.
Thanks, i was having another question, can we use bone dust to the dirt substratum? I know it is used for bonsai plants
That I'm not sure of
Nice tank! What kind of glass tubing is that? I’m wondering where I can get a glass attachment like that where the water comes out from
The glass tubing is lily pipes. Just do a search on amazon or ebay for "Aquarium Glass Lily Pipes" and tons of results should pop up. Thanks for watching! 😀
Great video very helpful new sub here just getting into the hobby myself looking forward to using ur steps
Thanks!
I'm assuming the "painting" the moss on drift wood also works?
yes. It works very well on wood
Great video as always! Would like to ask if its possible to leave the tank outside, would it be best for the plants? Fan from the Philippines 😀
You can and use the sun as your light source but leaving you tank outside can introduce b ugs and critters into your tank.
The Water Box If I cover it with glass would that be fine?
Sure but you need to air out the tank with leaving opennings so you can't just keep the whole tank covered.
You’re the best dude
Thanks!
Do you recommend this method for a beginner? I will be setting up my first tank next month and want to grow a carpet, this looks very promising. I will be going all in with co2 and medium to high lighting
Sure. If the person wants to take on a challenge. Many beginners uses this method with great results. It's up to the person,
Would this work growing the carpet plants from seeds? Thanks.
You can try. I just don't think seeds are a good option. See: ruclips.net/video/cpTXEaq7y98/видео.html

I don't know what 50cm is? Left to right? Up and down? What is the height of your tank from top to bottom?
Hi, love the way of using dsm method. But may I ask the moss you used is it submerged or emersed ?
The moss I grew emersed and then flooded it just like I did with the carpet.
Time lapse helped a lot 😊👍🏼🐠🫧
Subbed! Great tank, really came out nice. Maybe the algae was due to too much CO2? I'm thinking either that, or cut back the 10 hr light to 6 to 8... It's a learning phase for all of us.
That could possibly it. At the end all I kept reading are guesses how it happened. At least I know how to get rid of it now. :)
What was the white thing with your carpet and moss which looked like something grew on it?
