The audio came through great Kevin. Only hear birds chirping in the background so far. I'm using tulle fabric to protect produce from pests. Greenhouse in hot sun can be too hot even in fall. Please do an updated program on pest prevention in future . I grew marigolds from seed started in March and they are just blooming now. Unlike previous years my nasturteums have no aphids...none of my garden does while those are usually gross black aphid magnets.

Know what's brutal on your garden? Evacuating for 17 days! If I'd gotten around to putting in irrigation for my food plants they would've done much better, but my huge thriving tomatoes were also under outdoor grow lights (minimal sun under redwoods), and enclosed in reflective panels. The water and electricity were both cut off much of that time. Bought some IBC 275 gallon tanks, and looking into upgrading to auto-starting generators, so next time I will be less dependant on the infrastructure. Another benefit of container gardening: you can take all your plants with you when you evacuate! 🤪
All that said, I'm lucky (by about 100yds) that I'm just regrowing a garden, not sifting through ashes.

Please be safe! I have family in LA County with some being FD. May He watch over you all and keep you safe 🙏🏻❤️ I was able to harvest some broccoli earlier this season (7a) but decided to leave them in the planters. A few weeks ago I planted bush beans around the broccoli and holy moly! They LOVE each other! Making notes this year and this buddy duo is on the list for next year. For carrots I direct sowed in a planter with peas, nasturtiums and some herbs. They all seem happy together. And my goodness. This year was the first time growing peas (sugar snap and snow) and I may need a 12 step program 🤤 I’ll be stocking up on seeds for 2021. Just this evening as soon as I came home from work, I pulled the peas I have in planters with some cukes by the stairs and I ate them all before even opening the front door. And this is someone who NEVER had peas like this before this year. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 Crack peas. Yup. I’ll be trying to figure a way to grow them inside over there winter under my grow lights. I may go thru a withdrawal 😩 Am I dwelling on the peas too much?.....

On a radio show a few months ago, it was mentioned that the Brussel sprouts that we know now are not the same Brussel sprouts that we knew in the '90's, in that they have been modified to be less bitter. It made sense because my experience has been like yours, and so I did not do any further investigations. Great show. Thank you.

Love turnips! Growing up in Ireland, swede (rutabaga) is way more common than turnip and it's even commonly called a turnip there. My mother always cooked swede mashed up with carrot and parsnip. The first time I had an actual real turnip (they call them white turnips there to distinguish them from swedes, which are much bigger and have yellow flesh) I thought it was so delicious...

Covering sown carrot seeds with a board works a treat. keeps moisture in, protects the soil from disturbance, etc. Just check a couple times a day for the very first signs of life, and take it off once you do. I usually transition to draping shade cloth after I see sprouts to continue helping the soil stay moist.

We just had 6" of snow and freezing temps yesterday and will have an even colder night tonight! Spent about 3 or 4 hours creating tripods over plants and covering them and laying down tarps, etc to try to save as much as we could of our veggie garden! Smoke and ash have been covering us too, but not as badly as where you are. Have planted some beans and more lettuce, and hope to get some produce out of them in October or late September. The challenges of gardening in Colorado are always fun and enjoy what we do! Hope the fires get under control in Cali soon! Cheers Kevin!

Tip for people who dont like brussel sprouts, boil them (this reduces the time in the oven), bake some bacon pieces. But the sprouts in the oven with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and add the bacon. I tell you brussel sprouts and bacon is a match made in heaven

The ash (potash) will help with your Cauliflower and Broccoli as they are mostly grown for their flowers . Also would suggest growing carrots surrounded by a barrier of at least 18 inches if you wish to avoid carrot root fly ( the little beggars can't fly that high) , else wise your usual informative horticultural standard .

Turnips are a favorite of mine. If you cut the greens off to use however you want to, peel the root, slice it 1/4 or 3/8 inch slices, then skillet fry it like pan fried potatoes with salt, and oil, keeping the lid on in the beginning, then remove it about halfway through. They are delicious this way! Somehow the frying removes the slight bitterness they tend to have and they come out almost sweet. And completely awesome!

I'm a novice container gardener. I live in Baton Rouge, LA where my growing season is practically year round. My tomatoes are still producing fruit today after a too hot summer. This is my first Fall garden. I started the Fall garden the end of September. All plants look great but no harvest yet. I grow in containers until I can get a raised bed going. I plan to get my Spring garden from seeds and a raised bed started very soon.

Though through gardening I learned to appreciate a lot of the vegetables, I ate broccoli before but now I love it (slightly roasted with a nice tomato cream sauce, ughh so good). The leaves and flower stalks harvested just before they open are amazing sauteed in olive oil with some garlic and red pepper flakes!

Also, we love everything the beet plant provides us with! The tops are delicious, and there are many ways to enjoy the root bulb. (Boiled, sautéed, in soup, etc... the greens are better than spinach, IMHO! And I like spinach! I'm just about to harvest my (experimental) container of beets. I also have an experimental container beside the beets, of parsnip. Due to the soil conditions here, I have had to resort to container gardening. Hope my (experimental) harvest goes well! Perhaps early next week! Best wishes to all!

Wow, great info. I hated Brussels sprouts, too. But they were boiled, soggy and smelled like dirty socks. Now? I roast them and get them caramelized and crispy. Yum. Thank you for giving me so many ideas. I was in a garden funk (plants died in the heat, etc.). But your video has me excited to grow new things.

New pad? I just started gardening this past summer, but I'm in Vegas so it was a rough start. I have a nice raised bed that I recently built with some fall veggies you're reviewing in this video. About to start on my Dragon Fruit Journey as well :) Love your videos man. Road to self sufficiency :D

Thks….as always!! I had great success with kale, arugula, collards and spinach last winter…in big pots against the south wall of the house. Covered when temps went too low. The south wall received winter sun, and protected the big potted veggies from wind.

Up here in Vacaville, in the Sacramento valley, the smoke and ash are so dense, our temperatures went from 110 to mid to upper 80s. Because the weather has been so hot this year, I haven't bothered to start any brassicas for transplant. And, I need to do some overhauls on 2 raised beds. So there's that, lol. Your homestead is taking shape.

First of all you really have my heart in regards to the fires, I lived in the La Jolla Reservation (just below Mt. Palomar) during the 2007 Wild Fires and I remember the ash in Escondido. Eventually it hit the Rez starting at our nephews house when their wires split & boom 90% of the Rez was lost & of course our home & we lived clear on the other side. Anyway you guys be safe. On to gardening, our weather in Albuquerque went from. 99 on Monday to 46 last night & today with winds in some places 75 mph. I covered my plants w/intention to uncover during the day but it never warmed tomorrow 62. All your information really helped just fingers crossed things will survive, I planted late so my tomatoes were just producing plus I had blossom drop with records heat, more blossoms this past week now cold snap. Not sure about a fall crop, Sat suppose to b 80. Cheers

I'm trying a fall garden for the first time. I actually harvested some joi choi yesterday. It grew so much faster than I expected. I'm with you on all of those, except for beets😝. Have you ever noticed that beet lovers are always trying to convert people? I can't tell you how many times I've heard "oh, you just haven't had them the way I cook them" or "you should try roasted golden beets, or candy cane beets". I've been hoodwinked one too many times. I just don't like them. I'm excited to see how all of my Asian radishes go. Oh the Korean banchan, I am going to have! 😋
