    » THE TRAIN
🚂The Fianarantsoa-Côte Est (FCE) railway is the train that runs from Madagascar’s highland city of Fianarantsoa to the coastal city of Manakara. It was built between 1926 and 1936 by the French colonial administration as an effort to open the east coast and create a means of transporting agricultural products.
Today, the train acts as a lifeline for local communities that aren’t accessible by road. A lack of upkeep since the 1960s has resulted in the train regularly breaking down, causing delays and even de-railings. Patient travelers looking for an opportunity to see arguably the most scenic parts of Madagascar as well as local life at each stop along the way will find this 12-24++ (yes, you read that right) hour journey unlike anything they’ve experienced before. Plus, you can sample local flavors at each stop.
    💸TRAIN PRICE: 4.54 USD/16,000 MGA for 2nd class | 11.35 USD/40,000 MGA for 1st class
    » THE TRAIN FOOD
    1. FIANARANTSOA TRAIN STOP: Rice Porridge with Zebu Meatballs
    ADDRESS: Fianarantsoa, Madagascar
🥣Zebu meatballs are added to rice porridge, which is made with ginger, garlic and green leaves. And a bit of oil.
    ----
    2. STOP 1: Fried Potatoes with Gravy + Nem
🥔FRIED POTATO: Fried potatoes with a side of country gravy for dipping.
NEM: Nem is similar to a fried spring roll.
💸PRICE: 1.42 USD/5,000 MGA for a mix of fried potato and nem
    ----
    3. SAHAMBAVY TRAIN STOP: Yogurt + Crocodile Bullets
    ADDRESS: Sahambavy, Madagascar
🐊CROCODILE BULLETS: Grated cassava root, shaped and fried until golden crispy.
    ----
    4. TSIMANAVAKA: Stuffed Fried Chilis + Zebu + Shrimp + Freshwater Eel
    ADDRESS: Sahambavy, Madagascar
Tsimanavaka is a restaurant located right across the street from the Sahambavy stations. We sampled their stuffed fried chilis, zebu, shrimp and freshwater eel.
🌶STUFFED FRIED CHILIS: Green chili stuffed with zebu meat and onion before being fried.

    🥒ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but currently call Vietnam home. I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. People either enjoyed my undeniable charm or enjoyed watching me eat things like coconut worms, and thus Best Ever Food Review Show came to be.
I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer. If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.
Don’t forget to subscribe to Best Ever Food Review Show, so we can connect through food and travel and become Bestys!

Part of the reason why your videos are so addictive is the kind human element - it warms my heart the way you share food with the locals or pay more than what is asked for (“let’s just give him a bunch of money!”), especially in places where communities are struggling just to get by. Your views are also refreshingly honest, often hilarious but without being hurtful. You’re “Good People”! 😊

I have been in a fog of depression for 2 days. Struggling to keep up with a full time job plus full time college. I was getting down on myself, feeling crappy, feeling overwhelmed with my life and my responsibilities, rent, gas, etc.
This video changed the course of my day, it uplifted me. It’s Sonny’s enthusiasm, humor, zest for life....and seeing how humble the Malagasy people are, having a hard life, living and enjoying even though life’s unpredictable for them..that made me appreciate what I have. It made me feel happy again ❤️

Wow, I see a cross-culture here. The food called 'Nem' that he mentioned is literally spring roll or "nem" in Vietnamese pronunciation. Well, as my inference, French people have brought that food from Vietnam into Madagascar as both these two countries were under the colonization of the French. Am I right? Sorry if my inference is wrong.

    • @kerberose
      @kerberose 2 года назад +3

yes, it is similar to vietnamese nem ran! i am both malagasy and vietnamese :)
however, a lot of the food is also brought over from trading and diversity in ethnicity, not just colonisation. you can also find sambosy there, for example, which is a derivative of the indian samosas. as well, the coastal greeting "salamo" is derived from the arabic greeting "salam alaikum". madagascar has long been a hub for trading and traveling, since it is nestled between africa and asia! many things were brought over by traveling salesman.
i think it is incredibly unique in its blend of cultures; if you are to look at some very basic words, like numbers, it really makes its proto-austronesian roots shine! example; ruclips.net/video/YzKxyiTMX8g/видео.html so it actually has similarities to languages like hawaiian and indonesian!
i do not know if nems were brought over by the french due to colonisation, but i would think it just as likely that it was brought by vietnamese travelers :)

I lived and worked in Madagascar for five years in my younger days. Zebu was local, cheap and plentiful. Anything else was imported and expensive. We all ate lots of zebu. It doesn’t take very long living there all the time to forget what beef taste like.

This episode just introduced me once again to a very geuine simple life living happily with such small dream and desire. It really shows the real happiness away from hush&rush of crowded cities and towns with all fancy lights all arounds. Loved the background music too...so peaceful and relaxing tone.
    Great job
