I’m looking to make a new desk with electric legs and Home Depot table top. Searched RUclips and this was the first thing to pop up, helps me a lot. Thanks man
I liked this review/turtorial. I've got a desk at home that a cabinet maker did in between two built-in book cases. I never liked the painted wood desk top and I've been looking for something to make a natural wood top out of. I got turned on to the idea of using a butcher block counter top as a good solution. Yours looks great, so I want to try and get the same finish. I'm really big on how a surface feels to the touch, so I'm glad you described that and what you used to finish it with. Thanks for suggesting the keyboard as well.
Great video, and thanks for the gudie! I'm in the same position. Tried IKEA, no hope going down that road, so turned to home depot and found your video.
Thanks for checking it out. I like how it turned out. Be warned. This desk will have more of a matte feel. (Unless you put your own epoxy or finish on it) but I love mine still. Good luck with the build!
I think that looks way better than the IKEA. It gives it an authentic rustic look. I've ordered custom oak table from Etsy with live edges to give it it that smooth waved edges and extra rawness. Hopefully looks awesome. Good job tho. Great work station.
Thanks man! Yeah that’s exactly what I wanted. Everything straight out of the store was too glossy or too “finished” sounds like that too from Etsy will be perfect 👌🏾 good luck with it. Let me know how it goes
Thanks man!!! It’s still holding strong. And I don’t even use the butcher block oil as much as I should. I did update my chair. That one is TRASH after a long working session
Love the vibe on this video. If you havent chose a chair yet, let me suggest a armless drafing chair that has a back, as well as a metal footring around the bottom. They normally have massive padding with reclining and support for many frontwards and backwards sitting postures
I came to see if you show how easy/difficult was it to make drills through the block to connect to the motorized legs. Can you share your experience? Thanks in advance
Hey it actually wasn’t that hard. It came with some wood screws. The MAJOR THING you need to make sure is that the screws aren’t longer than the butcher block. Wood screws are really sharper. Using this with an electric drill .. they just went right in. Good luck on the build!
Awesome video, man. Appreciate you sharing the tips! I'm planning out my butcher block custom build too, looking at the pre-finished ones from Home Depot. Haven't decided on color. Yours looks amazing, which wood & stain color did you go with?
Thanks man! Acacia Brown. I think I linked the exact one in the description. You’ll see that the brown in the photo isn’t exactly the same. It was pretty finished. Just remember there’s not a thick layer of lacquer or epoxy/resin on it like most store bought desks. Honestly I like the more matte feeling this has though. The conditioner was enough for my taste.
@@iamjasonthompson thanks for the reply! you rock. I’m with you on the matte finish over the laquer/epoxy finishes. You tipping the scale for me, I pulled the trigger on two of the Acacia Brown countertops from Home depot today. Can’t wait to set them up next week. Grateful for your video and feedback.
No I didn’t, it still looks good. I don’t oil it as much as I should to be honest. But with no epoxy on it, it has a nice rustic matte feel to it. Which is kind of what I was going for.
Hey Jason - I just ordered one of these myself (pre-finished). Do you use anything else besides butcher block conditioner to soften the touch up a bit? And what was the process like for applying the conditioner? Just one coat on the top and then let it sit for 24 hours? Thanks and great video.
Thanks for checking out the content! Yep mine was was pre finished too. I basically added a layer, let the wood drink it up for 30 min then added another. And then let the 3rd coat sit for a day. I’ve heard you have to keep applying it like once a month. Honestly I haven’t done that and it’s still smooth. It was super dry feeling right out of the paper
@@zachl1978 nope. You can throw on just plain mineral oil if you just want to keep adding. But it’s not necessary in my opinion. That conditioner has some in it anyway
Replacing my old monolithic desk for one of these two. Really interested in your desktop would finishing. Since I sit at my desk 10 to 12 hours a day I don't want to smell fumes or have any oily gunk on my arms. The butcher block conditioner is still working your you?
It is actually. I don’t reapply it nearly as much as I should but the finish on the block is fine and hasn’t gotten too dry despite my negligence. The wood drinks up the conditioner and you Have a dry odorless workspace. I wanted a matte actual “wood” feel and it’s still holding up.
What legs did you use? That's what I'm curious about. Lots of butcher block or desk top pieces of wood out there, but which leg set is the best, who knows.
Is it the best? Probably not but it was affordable when looking at other options. I didn’t want to pay too much because after a certain price point.. I probably should just buy a complete desk
@@iamjasonthompson Thanks. Yeah I wouldn't want to spend a ton of money either. But at least with the butcher block you're getting solid wood and not particle board or laminate.
Thanks for asking! I’m much better now. I suffered a relapse in late July/early August but I have fully recovered from that as far as I can tell. Hope you’re well!
Hey awesome desk! Kind of an odd question, I have the exact same Honda Accord as you do and saw that you were able to transport a 6' top, do you think an 8' top would fit then lol? How is the clearance inside?
Thanks! Hahah, you’re not the first person to ask. So I had to lay down the back seats and use that little slot that actually goes into the cabin. Honestly I feel like 8’ would be like 1 foot too long unless you lower the passenger seat all the way down and angle it a bit to the right. Good luck! Hondas are super reliable aren’t they? 😄
Great video! I had a question since I am thinking of getting the same countertop to do a DIY desk. Was the only thing needed that wood conditioner? How well is that holding up?

I ordered the same butcher block but the 7ft instead. I think I am just going to use regular table legs from home depot to set it up with. Are you concerned about the monitor mount scratching up the desk? I thought about using the vevo reinforcment bracket to prevent that but not sure if it would work.
The mount has a think piece of felt or rubber on the top that makes me not worry too much about it. The bracket is not a bad idea. As long as it’s tight and isn’t wiggling around I think it will be fine. Second I’m not really worried about that part of the desk as it will indefinitely have the mount on it
