I love when IKEA has been out of stock of the drawers for over 3 months but I already bought the countertop😭😭
Order them on the website. I went to IKEA today and you can order them. They come within a week
I bought one yesterday
DezireAngels for some reason it only gives me an option to pick it up at my local IKEA... which has been out for a while. I’ve tried to call them too a few times too but the lines have been busy
I sniped Gray Alex's at my local Ikea, I signed up for notifications about stock and got to the store within an hour of opening and was able to get them. I opted to return the Karlby I ordered and buy a Butcher Block at Home Depot. I believe the solid wood Butcher Block will hold up better(I will be screwing things to the underside of the desk, and I was able to use a Red Mahogany Stain with a Matte Polyurethane. It looks insanely good!
Joseph Wright I just copied RandomFranks setup
Perfect timing! I'm buying. A new desk and I've always loved this desk and wondered a few things.

gotta love Ikea! :D Got my desk earlier this month and its been solid as a rock so far. :D
If you’re worried about sag just buy one or two L shaped closet brackets and paint to match the wall behind the desk. Mount to the wall and the bottom of the desk for extra support. It will also keep the wood slab from moving side to side so long as it hits a stud in the wall.
The IKEA desk can look amazing when built like this! I've just seen this video but it's exactly how I did mine, looks so awesome

I am glad you finally made a video on your awesome desk setup. A very ingenious idea you came up with to create such a masterpiece.
Happy 700K!!!!!
Wow! Excellent setup! It's inspired me to get a similar setup for my equities trading platform at home. Hope it comes out looking half as great as yours. Keep up the terrific work, young man!
To help sagging you should attach a bar/piece of wood across the length of the desk and/or a support beam in the middle, also of course try to avoid putting heavy stuff in the middle of the desk
Best videos on RUclips period ! *drop mic
I looked EVERYWHERE for a decent desk tour of my taste. I saw this kind of desk in a lot of set up tours and stuff but had no idea where to find the materials! Thank you so much for the video! Subbed!
Yes!!! Herman Embody chair!! I love it! I mean, I actually love your entire setup.... Just freaking amazing!!

I purchased this desktop, drawers, and leg stands because of randomfrakp's insane gaming setup video. I could never find a desk that fit my needs. I learned I didn't need the leg stands as it made the desk too high for me personally. I also learned quickly I had a noticeable sag in the middle within a week or so. I decided to purchase 2 8 foot pieces of oak wooden boards from lowes to help distribute the weight and eliminate the sag which run the length of the desk and sat them on top of the drawers and then the countertop on top of them. I also moved the drawers in around 13" on each side as at first I had them spaced exactly like frank. I have 2 27" monitors, 2 speakers (audioengine a5+), and my pc on the table and everything fits nicely. I also purchased some mesh drawer liner that i placed on top of the drawers/boards to eliminate the countertop sliding which it did very easily. Since I don't use the leg stands you don't notice the liner nor can you see the boards unless you look under the desk. Anywho this setup is amazing and I recommend it for anyone that can afford it.
If you haven't, you should post some pics of your set up to r/battlestations. Looking to build a desk like this, in the 74in variation, and like the way yours sounds.
Can u post a link for pics please?
Pics
I'm about to purchase the 74" Karlby and install four 27" H x 4" W Square Metal Post style legs, with two 72" L x 1-1/2" W x 1/8" Flat Steel Bars situated between the legs along the length of the desk. This should be a cost effective means of preventing Sag. I'm choosing steel because it is very cheap and strong, so less bulk in the supporting structure means a more finished looking final product.
Hey i bought the same set up and noticed the sag too. Don't fully understand your explanation on how you countered could you link some pics please
Hi Frank, Im currently designing my own room setup for when i eventually movee and have to say ive taken major inspiration from you. The wood with white colour scheme is fantastic and plan the same drawer and counter top setup. I have very simialr speakers to yours to and keybaord =]
Amazing job as ever.
Ingenuity at its finest, love your setup! 👌
This video alone made me sub. This helps so much. Thank you for the help man.

not even real wood lol
Fuck what kinda of shit card do you have lol

Yep. Those ikea tops are only real wood on the top. Under that is mostly Particleboard
Congratz to 700k
I did something similar to what you did here. Alex desk draws as legs, Karlby for a desktop, but I added a second smaller Karlby as a monitor/speaker riser shelf, cut it down to 14" x 48" mounted on a set of Ikea Capita riser legs. But for the desktop, to keep it from sliding around, I got the 2" legs similar to yours, took the plastic caps and mounted them to the Alex tops, and then took a 1 1/2" hole saw and cut a 1/4" deep track on the underside for the desktop itself to sit on them so it didn't go anywhere. :)
Great video! Keep it up and thanks for answering all my questions!
FYI, these Ikea countertops are actually a fairly thick real hardwood veneer, that is glued to an OSB core. Its ment to give you that real butcherblook counter look and feel at a cheaper cost. Its a denser hardwood and probably prefinished with some kind of sealer why it doesn't look as rough and woody like your other desk.
Great video, move into new house in 2 weeks with an office so will be getting this set up.
finally someone who showed setting up a desk and sharing detailed information on desk. Thanks
Waiting for this video good to see you answered our questions!
I also made a desk kind of similar to this, with one drawer and two legs. Ended up having a countertop special cut from IKEA, as the premade ones was either to small or to wide. And I really liked the "cement" looking top :-)
They do that?
Saved this video over a year ago. Finally pulled the trigger and got everything! Working on it now. Had to wait two weeks for both Alexs.
Yo! I been trynna get the drawers since 2020 & as of March 2021 I placed an order on ikeas site & was apparently one of the last people in the world to get them because when I called they said they discontinued & removed from the website! It’s been 3 months since your comment so did you get it set up? Hope it went well
@@VyruhsTV yes I was able to get everything. Plus I got 4 Alexs. Hopefully I didn't take the last 4.
How did you attach the spacers so they keep the desktop in place?
@@WeavePap the desk doesn’t stay in place that’s the thing 😅 you drill in the risers into the Alex drawers and simply place the table top on top. I’ve seen some people drill the table top into the risers but they recommend you drilling the riser into the drawer if you ever need to change the table top. It’ll make it easier
I am just learning about this whole desk hack thing and this video and all the links is awesome. Thanks!
Got this desk setup a few days ago. Really happy with the top and drawers. Waiting on Amazon to deliver the legs. Was kind of undecided between the 5cm and 10cm ones, so I bought both to see which is best for me. (I'm 1.85 and the 'recommended' desk height would be 75cm for me, which would mean the smaller legs would be best.
Thanks so much for this inspiration, because it's definitely worth the ~250eu/300$ it cost me (I got the smaller ~73 inch/186cm Karlby top). Fits my one 27'', one 21,5'' and sizeable PC case very well, with room to spare.
you have awesome desk bro :D
If anyone knows a link to where I could get myself the correct length support beam for the middle of the desk would be greatly appreciated.
build desk --> measure natural height to bottom of top sheet --> go to any hardware store and have them cut a piece of material to that length
Nice - have always like your desk setup, thanks for giving us the details

so Karlby and Alex drawer is not drill together ? you just put karlby on Alex drawer ? is that okay ? im just scare my monitor would fall anytime if i make a mistake.

Interesting setup. A budget version of this would be the desk made out of a couple of 2x12's or 3 2x10's cut to preferred length and sanded and stained/painted to your liking if your willing to a bit of work. I like the Ikea drawer cabinet setup although for me it might be too high as I'm only 5'10" .
Shout out for the PSP Go! Great video. Thank you for the desk info. It's inspired me for my desk setup

Awesome job Frank...Question where did you get your 3 legged lamps
Hey Frank, just wanted toet you know...you got me! The last 6 searches I was looking for, you had a video for each....so, subbed. Thanks for the content.
Fantastic ikea setup !! LOVE IT!! 😀
When I heard "I wipe it with water" my heart stopped. Love that top though. Have to look for a 72" version.
What's wrong with water? Also, I have to say it kinda bugs me that he just screwed into the top drawers. Wouldn't you see the screws when opening the drawers? lol. And the sag would bug me especially since I'd be putting my monitors on the top itself. I'd wonder how well that top/the drawers would hold up with that much weight on them.
If the screws are small enough you wouldn't see them when you open the drawers. You also would have to get really low down to see the top of the draws anyway, so I don't think it would be an issue aesthetically.
If you're worried about the desk sagging in the middle just buy a leg or two to attach to the middle of the worktop.
It’s a counter top...using water to wipe it won’t hurt it.
It’s insane how many people have used your desk as inspiration.
(Myself included, I have the same setup)
How’re you dealing with the sagging
@@kirbyfrostt There is a desk leg that Ikea sells, so I put one in the middle of my desk. Also I try and limit the weight in the middle by using monitor arms that are attached where the drawers are.
How tall are you? I'm 6'1" and I'm trying to figure out if the leg stands are recommended for someone of my height.
@@user-ws4wn4sv2v I’m also 6’1”, and if I put my chest all the way up against the desk, I still have some leg room (it’s about 2 feet deep, +1 inch off the wall). For vertical space, I use a secretlab omega chair at maximum height and I still can cross my legs (from floor to underside of the desk, using the 4” furniture legs, that’s roughly 2’8” from floor to desk).
Overall, I’m never cramped on legroom, but if you do go with this desk I suggest putting an ikea OLOV desk leg in the middle back of the desk to prevent sag especially if you use monitors without a monitor arm.
I do recommend the legs under the tabletop for looks and also legroom.
Wish i could see daily vids from u, but its all the effort that you put in that makes the video so keep consistant!
Awesome desk setup! I think this is the desk system I need to build.
what size nails did you use to attach the furniture leg stand
I’m in the same boat, did u find out
I really like that countertop, if only it was 30" deep
You can order that. Special order from Ikea. More costly.
@@Simensandberg6994 how do you do that?
Congrats 700k!
loved your setup
please show us how you did your g502 mouse mod
Your monitor set up is ridiculous. I’m genuinely curious as to how you use that on the daily lol
Dapper Dop It's aesthetically pleasing to look at but a setup like that is useless when it comes to any task. One 34" ultrawide with gsync is perfect.
Dual monitor setup can be practical for some. Work on the main monitor, reference material on the second monitor. When I'm doing my data science stuff, for example, it helps to write on the main monitor and then execute on the second monitor.
A single ultrawide works in those scenarios until the point at which you're working in 2 or more applications at once + whatever you're using to render your work on the second monitor.
But I definitely don't understand any number of monitors greater than two.
I use 3 monitors at work and I find them great. Though one of them is a laptop screen that's docked. I can see the appeal.
The Karlby desk isn't deep enough for those massive monitors. Why does he have his "main desk" off cam? That's my question...
Rick it is deep enough because they are mounted to the walls... so it’s 25 inches from his face so that’s perfect
Yo Big props on the video! Thanks for the tip! I'm moving to a bigger house with a dedicated gaming / office and this video helped me decide what I'm going with! Thanks again! Subbbed!
Setting up my game room soon so great timing
Hey you could always just flip it over since you didn't drill it. In case it starts to warp any more noticeably.
You can't do that
If it doesnt warp too much you could technically turn it over and redistribute, yes.
CapsuleGraph no you idiot, the wood pattern is only on one side
My man no need to get hostile, but it doesn't matter if the wood is only on one side. It won't change the laws of physics just to flip it over...
but you have a crappy particle board look on the other side, its a particle board desk with walnut veneer so you wouldnt want to flip it
I have the same Ikea desk but the smaller variant
One question I have is how do you hide your cables with that desk? That’s my biggest problem with the desk
probably either drilled into the wall behind the monitors and passed the cables through there or a cable that is pained the exact same colour so it isnt noticeable
You can buy the Ikea Signum ! In my opinion its great for hiding those pc cables :) just a few bucks like 15-20
Behind The Cookies just move desk like 10cm from wall and mount a cable holder(pvc pipe can do) and put cables in that.I dont mean on lower part but on back edge.It helps a lot
CodeRedCody he made a video on this in the past if I remember correctly. Go look for it. I can't remember what it was called.
I have the same countertop. I drilled a hole through the desk and my extended mouse pad. There a groove in my keyboard (Cooler Master MK500) so my mouse cable fits in it from the side to the center, under the keyboard. There a detachable usb-c cable on the MK500 that plugs underneath in the center, which has a cutout. Those two cables then go through the mousepad, through the desk, and then I keep all my wires mounted under the desk using reversible 3M tape, zip ties mounting clips. I have a single monitor, speakers, lamp, desktop, MBP, keyboard and mouse, and you can't see a single cable unless you go out of your way to look. If you have any questions or want to see lemme know and I'll share my imgur.
Congratulations on 700k!
Great vid my guy I’m planning on doing this setup
You can attach a steel L profile beam across the desktop to stop it from sagging. or move the drawers a bit more to the center.
This. I have the exact setup from the video and did what you suggested with the L beam. Works perfect and out of sight.
Mike T more info on the L beams please.
@@GHOST-bx5xz it's actually referred to as an L bracket, not beam. But yeah, I used two heavy duty ones (like you'd do with a shelf). You'll want to drill into the wall studs, if it's not possible use anchor screws.
Ah, the good old days when the Alex drawers were always in stock and weren't $100+ each.

I just bought the desk stands and was wondering how to set them up.. this was the first video on my feed. thank you!
Thanks for the ideas!
Sag in the middle, just flip the counter top over every so often that will minimize the noticeable sag.... Nice set up!
Thanks for sharing Frank. You answered my question and you are not a tall dude (same as me), but you have a 33" high desk. Isn't that ergonomically to high for someone 6' tall? Standard is 28"-30", but I guess you aren't standard. My goal is to get a sit/stand desk to be able to set those finer adjustments. Frank just a 'tip' for you and your fans when getting a top that is good quality and cheaper....If you have a Habitat for Humanities or place to get used items from a home...Pick up a "Solid Core Door"...very solid , thick and good size at 80". I seen one for $20 or buy new at Home Depot for $40-$60. Far cheaper than Ikea.
The ideal desk height for someone that's 6 feet tall is apparently 74cm tall or 29 inches. I wish the drawers were a bit smaller so I could still have the metal legs separating the drawers from the worktop, but I guess I'll have to just have it resting on top.
I swear I thought the same. I’m 5’9” And my desk is 28.5” and it’s barely enough for me to sit w knees 90 deg and then I raise the chair arms highest position in order to my elbows and arms on the same level as my desk and arm chair.
I noticed Frank doesn’t sit ergonomically correct. I also have the embody. Notice when he’s sitting look at the chair arms. They are not level w the desk. I guarantee he can’t get them level while having his knees 90 def and feet flat on the ground.
Amazing Frank!
Great video! What size screws did you use for the furniture legs? Should i screw in all 4 screws for each leg or is 2 good enough for a 74”inches table
For anyone watching now, Ikea has made this desk (without the amazon stands) premade already for about 230$
I thought for a second that I had set my video playback speed lower than 1x when I saw the intro
Really good video Frank. My suggestion is to mount a metal bar that somewhat matches the width of the tabletop. If you get the right type (I don't know a name for it), it'll help combat the sag.
Love your videos bro keeb goin 😍😍😍
sooo creative, its not like theres already 500.000 videos with the same setup.
lol ikr...boring
I've literally never seen a setup exactly like this. And even though there are setups similar to this it is still, in my opinion, the best-looking setup I have ever seen. If it looks great, then why hate on it?
@@adenlaipply873 seriously you've never seen that desk before? It's in almost ever setup video.
Not this exact one, no. I've seen different colors for the desk and maybe one other time I've seen someone use the legs as he has, but his is unique from others I've saw.

He could also flip the desk every so often to counteract the bend
Underneath looks different from the top
that just makes it wanna break more lol
@Javoy Johnson I have the desk, it doesn't bend because I attached my monitor to the wall with a mount -- recommend you do the same
@Javoy Johnson I have the smaller one which is big enough anyway, but if you get the bigger one it won't sag if you mount the monitor to the wall and have the PC on one side
@Javoy Johnson i drilled mine into a shitty concrete wall and it holds well, I already put a leg in the middle too
Amazing video. Thank you!
Congrats for 700k man
When ordering two IKEA drawers is $150 and shipping is $200 LOL
Shorter people should not try to copy this desk setup! The ikea drawers are 70 cm's high. Add a 2/3 cm wooden plate on this and you are having a 73 cm high desk. I'm 175 cm and i need to sit at a 69/70 cm high desk. Dont be lazy on this! I went with another setup just for this. Ergonomics first!!!!! Edit: As for other desks. A lot of people would be well off with a height adjustable office desk. Just find a website in your country that allows for custom wood tops and you are all set. I got a 180x 80 (that is height adjustable) desk with a beautifull thermopine wooden top for 280,-.
Lol manlet
Great video kept seeing your setup and was wondering...
Hey FrankP
Thank you for this wonderful video
Please what screws did you use for the Leg stands ?
A better idea for a desk top and way cheaper and better looking would be to buy a 4 by 8 red oak veneer plywood at home depot, cut it in half and wood glue it together. Iron on oak veneer on the sides. HD will even cut it to size for you! The oak veneer stains really well and it looks like you have a thick piece of chunky oak wood. At a cost of $50. I checked out this IKEA counter top with shipping and tax it was $340.00. Forget about it! It's a no brainer!
That would be half the size of his 98" desk if I understood you correctly, but I agree that shipping those from IKEA is a waste of money. If I wanted this build I would run over to IKEA which is less than an hour away and grab a 74" Hammarp countertop instead (solid wood). Retreat it and put it on shorter drawer units.
I appreciate the video, but I'm also a little reluctant to make this desk now. Looks awesome, but at a $300-$400 cost, I really would not want a desk that warps over time or feel that I've gotta mount my monitors on the wall rather than on the desk's top. I might go for something smaller and prebuilt. Anyone else find a creative alternative?
Probably late but maybe it''ll help someone in the future, ikea also sells legs that support the middle, they usually come with the kits that they offer for desks and are like 10-20 that will give you extra peace of mind and should prevent any warping as well as provide additional support in the middle. They are pretty nice and usually match the aesthetic of the desk, also something people commonly do is get butcher board from a hardware store and stain it and use that. The real wood usually holds better and you can still add the ikea leg if needed/desired
Hi Randomfrankp - Your Video My Ikea Desk Setup Your Questions Answered, Makes Me Can'T Stop Watching This Video, The Idea Is So Inspiring...
well done well done. cheers. been a while but would love a derk overhaul myself here now in 2022 again
a support beam may not be necessary as moving the alex drawers more inwards would help evenly distribute the weight of the counter top
Abiola o but that would look weird
J I see your point. Personally I'm going to go a similar route to what frank did but I'm gonna use a ikea linnmon tabletop and Alex drawers with a leg in the middle under it as my monitor will be on the table as well as my pc.
This is what I've done. Had a table leg that matched the side ones, and popped it in once I started putting real weight on my desk. It works beautifully.
@Abiola o the ikea in canada already sells a package for the 2 alex drawers and linnmon tabletop www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S59932698/#/S99932696
not sure if its sold elsewhere
