I used the EMAX 3515 600KV on my first quad (HK Alien 560) running 12" props, great combination, Highly recommended :)

I have an old 9 inch quad that had 2 axis camera stabilization that flew for 8 minutes on only a 4s 3000 with some old sunnysky 2212 960 Kv. built the whole thing for under 400. I just rebuilt the thing and took off the camera stabilization and switched to a F4 board to lighten it up, will test but the thing should fly for awhile now with lots of room for more batteries.

Try the T-Motor MN 3110-15 780KV and a 12-6" Prop from Graupner E-Prop, it's taking abaout 6 -8 Amps on 4Sfor cruising. I have been flying them on a modified X-Frame with short front arms at about 170° angle and longer back arms at about 90° angle and a Tattu 4S 6750mah battery, worked great and flight time was around 20 to 25 minutes. Flight Controller was a soft mounted Vector. 4 Speed Controllers from Gerabest were to heavy and later I took a 4 in one from Gearbest, don't know the type anymore, but it worked out of the box.

Double the P, wow no wonder I can't get it right. Guess I am to use to small quads.
ive read online that simon k firmware is less prone to desync but I haven't really seen it. the only time ive seen desync is when I over propped a motor ran a 14in on a motor suited for 10 (got really hot too). I believe the lower kv motors are designed in a way that they provide sufficient torque to negate desync issues. Just make sure the manufacturer says the motor can turn the prop you want too use.
It's more about motor timing - similar to the spark advance in a petrol engine. If the motor is spinning a lot more slowly then you don’t need to create the next magnetic field needed as early as in faster motors. It's easy to tell if it's happening - it sounds horrible and the motor starts running like it has coal for bearings! Agree on the prop comment, see the results of the testing I've done to see how much more a motor will pull by adding a prop with just 1" more diameter or 0.5" more pitch.. :D Happy flying!
I have also found raising the idle speed helps prevent desync because it's that extra juice required to respond that causes it to reset.
Zoe flys them too the big X class and she flys 3D on regular 5 inch setups

What about STYLE of motor? Are pancake motors more or less efficient?

Maybe the weather plays a part in it we have really hot humid summers here maybe that a contributing factor on our hot motors and a ESC not sure how the summers are over in your neck of the woods though maybe the same as ours?
We were fairly warm this year at 25 - 32 C for several months. Not sure ambient temp difference would set esc’s on fire but I may be wrong.
7 inch 1900kv about 600g 4cell lipo I have about 7.5amps on hover. What about you guys? I did try and get a tiny bit of efficiency. Nothing to write home about.
have to sell 5 210 quads to buy an X-class one...but in the end, it will be worth it
