I can't thank you enough for this awesome, oldie-but-perfect video. Because you were so thorough and covered "all the bases" by explaining how this all works, and then addressing each of the potential sources of problems, you saved me hundreds in repairs (or even a replacement). Your experience is so obvious because everytime you explained some of the reasons that might have caused the problem, I'm like: "How'd he know I did that?" Anyway, your suggestion for simply clearing the little hole between the igniter and the gas did the trick. Before I watched your video, I didn't even know that hole was there. A little soaking and a pin later... Ta-Da!!! Fixed. Thanks for everything!
This video you made 10 years ago enabled me, a 68-year-old grandma, to fix the burner on my GE gas stove after tenants almost trashed it. Spent hours cleaning it after they moved, then watched this video about trouble-shooting burner that wouldn't light. Since it wasn't even clicking, I tried replacing the burner switch on the wiring harness. My stove is 25 years old (doesn't look it!) so the part is discontinued, but I found a used one on eBay and now it works perfectly. Thank you!
Thanks, Bill. You just saved me a very expensive and unnecessary repair bill. I had a handyman come by and tell me I needed all new parts. But it turns out my problem was example 3, a clogged gas hole. Not only can that be a problem but all the little vent holes in the top pieces can get clogged. So, I went through and cleaned out all of the holes in all of the pieces. Now my stove performs great. Thanks for taking the time to put together the video.
You are a lifesaver!!!!! I have a rental unit with a gas stove and the unit smelled of gas. One of the top burners clicked but never lit. The stove was a mess so it was just as you described - there are 2 very tiny holes and they were plugged. I cleaned them out with a paper clip!!!! Bam! Saved me at least $100 for service call. You are awesome!!!!
Bill, you are one of the people that make this world a better place. Our problem was a clogged pin hole near the spark. The clogged pin hole was not allowing a gas flow. This problem was covered in your video at about time 4:30 . Thank you !
I learned today that the 4 of my burners weren’t broken just clogged! 🎉😮😮 9yrs later and your video is still helping! 1 of the 4 is shorted out! Thank you bill! Hope your doing well!
@@AkuotDiri I used a small paper clip, unfolded, and inserted through the hole from outside in. The paper clip won't go far as it will hit a turn in the gas flow direction. However, you will be able to see the paper clip sticking through from the top view. This is also assuming that you can light the eye with a match or BBQ lighter when the gas is turned on and that, when unlit, you can see the spark from the ignitor. 1) See if the burner will light with the eye turned on and a match or other source applied. 2) If it does, take all the burner parts off and see if the ignitor sparks when you turn on the eye. 3) If so, clean the hole described in the video with a small paper clip. 4) Reassemble everything and test it out. If you followed these steps, the burner should work.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! In less than 10 minutes, your video showed me how to fix our clogged burner an hour before my house inspection! No problems, no cursing from me. Thank you!
Bill, You have the only video that explained the right method to diagnose and repair the problem with my wire igniter harness. Problem fixed! Thank you!
Thanks for this great video! I was able to finally get one burner to finally light again after at least 10+ years. It was the actual burner itself because no matter which side it was flipped on, it didn't light. I cleaned the little holes with a toothpick and bam, she works again! Thanks again! :)
Thanks, Bill. Just fixed my girlfriend's just-out-of warranty Whirlpool drop in gas stove. Used my Swiss Army Knife. All burners clicked and sparked. I smelled gas, though it barely burned when manually lit. I had to unscrew the part you removed by hand and lifted it off the range I looked for the gas inlet (brass and round) and and reamed it with the plastic toothpick. Stoked right up!
Totally worked! Easy fix! The left to right thing to relit the burners totally works. Clean the pinhole and light the burners from left to right till they all come on. Love it! Thanks!
I am so glad I found this video. My burner hasn't worked properly in a year. I was able to fix my issue in like 2 minutes after watching this video. Thanks so much!!
Wow, my front right big burner has been down for almost a year now and not knowing that this simple fix that you explained could do the trick for me. The little hole was blocked with heavy grease. I unclogged it and it is now working perfectly. Thank you so much my dude.
You are so awesome! I just fixed my burner in about 2 seconds! It's not been working for over 2 years! I can hardly believe it. I can't wait until my husband comes home to see what I've done!
Your video helped me fix my problem. The little pilot hole that feeds the igniter was blocked so it wouldn't light. Used a toothpick to clean the hole and it worked :)
OMG!! Thank you! My front burner has been clicking and the spark was unable to ignite the burner. A little cleaning with a dry toothbrush and it works now. No more lighting with match. Thank you, great informational video.
Hi Bill, Wanted to thank you for the video. My problem was also #3. Gas was working, igniter was sparking properly, and burner would light with a lighter, but not from the igniter. I didn't even realize there was a small separate chamber with a small hole in it next to the igniter. I used a toothpick and probed the small hole a few times and burner started right up. Great video. Thanks very much for taking the time to do it.
thanks man! made fried chicken last night and the grease blocked the gas flow through the hole to the igniter. a toothpick and some patience costs a lot less than a repair guy.

This was very helpful! I had one burner not lighting, and I was looking up parts to order, but luckily I watched this video first. I poked a wire thru that little hole where the gas gets to the sparker to clean it out, and then the burner lit. Fixed in one minute, no cost.
Thank you! My wife made some homemade foaming cleaner to clean our black porcelain stovetop. When I was done cleaning, the burners wouldn't light. I had problem three. That little hole got gunked up. Cleaned it out with a toothpick, and all is fine again. You saved me a service call!
Hey Bill. Question. having an issue with the ingiter. I have gas coming out cause I smell it. I see the igniter sparking but not lights up the gas. One thing I noticed. all other igniters spark goes up, on this one it goes to the side. Please advise.
The reason it is going to the side, is because spark didnot find the good ground on the CAP,. that is why it is sparking towards the base, the ground is transferred from the burner to the base via the SCREW THAT HOLD burner (in my model). ensure ground is properly moved from bottom of the burner to the cap.
@@sivucit Please explain your answer a little more? How would you properly move your ground from the bottom of the burner to the cap? My stove sparks to the side instead of straight up. Thanks
@@ThePatriotsBrother The screw that attach burner to the stove is the ground, make sure you replace the screw or tight the screw so the stove and burner is connected well to get the ground, once u get right ground, the spark goes up, reason spark goes side because it could not find the ground and bruner seeks ground to the stove which is on the side / bottom of the burner
Thank you so much, I never knew there was a small pilot hole on the gas burner. I just cleaned it, now the gas burner is working. Thank you again for helping solve a six-month dilemma.😊

It saved an UN-necessary repair bill.
Thanks for your helpful advice regarding the small hole (orifice) next to the ignitor. I ran a fine wire through the hole and opened it up. The burner now lights like a charm. Saved me a lot of time and money.
Thanks, but didn't address my problem. Burner lights, I can smell the gas, but burner doesn't lite up. All other burners are good. This did happen after a very light cleaning, as I had this problem once before and I needed the burner to dry out for about 15 hours. It has been 2 days and still no flame?
I am so glad I watched the video till the end! I had no idea that little hole by the igniter needed to be cleaned to allow gas through. Thank you for this.
What if you have no click at all in all the burners. I see that is the one thing not covered and why I'm asking? Because that is my issue with out gas top. No click, no spark just a gas smell if left on. Which we don't leave on just saying.
Melody FPL Good question. All of mine click, but only sometimes. Sometimes none of them click but I’m just trying to figure out where the igniter unit is located so I can repair either a loose wiring harness or repair the igniter itself. I’m betting the replacement cost of an igniter is about 1/3 the cost of the entire stove/range. I refuse to be screwed over by someone or a group of people trying to make lots of money by sitting back and exploiting their ability to price parts 20 times what they cost in total to make, package and warehouse. Best wishes with your situation.
The last bit about cleaning the tiny hole near the igniter solved my problem. Could not even see that tiny hole there, it was *that* clogged up with grease or whatever. Many thanks for the video!
Bill Newberry none of my burners light up or even click, you made reference to a spark modulator. Is that an easy diy also??? Can u explain pls, thank you very much
Thank you so much Bill. I used the needle to unblock the tiny hole and I now have four burners working. I was considering purchasing a new stove as it was a huge inconvenience to have only three burners going. I'm delighted.
THANKS! THIS HELPED ME FIX MY ISSUES. TURNED OUT WAS IT WAS A VERY SLIGHTLY DIRTY IGNITER GAS PATH. CLEANED THE ONE AND ANOTHER THAT WAS TAKING WAY TO LONG TO LIGHT. NOW LIGHTS IMMEDIATELY!!! GREAT VIDEO!

Bill Thank you SIR !!!... The basic trouble shooting is spot on. I was dealing with one intermittent burner and all the rest worked. 50-50 chance burner switch or spark modulator. Was amazed at how much gunk was under the hood. Thanks again !!!

It's your step number 1, that involved actual expertise and know-how, that solved the problem. I have a feeling it must be the wiring you showed that is the issue, but I think it makes sense to do s cleaning just to cover all my bases. The only problem is, I haven't got a f'ing clue how to replace the thing. I guess that's the next thing to RUclips! I clicked the like button, but you deserve credit for providing assistance at no charge.
Thank you Bill!!!! My front right burner was clicking and making the striking noise but would not ignite. I used a safety pin, opened it out and sent the pointy end down to unclog the gas hole. It worked like a charm and the burner ignites beautifully! Problem solved! I'm sure a technician would have charged a lot of money for such a simple fix.
Thank you so much. I did what you said about the little hole and voilà, my burner is working again. Thank you for saving me a call to the repair man/woman.
I had just washed the burners and couldn't figure out why they wouldn't light (they all clicked). The oven is only 2 months old??! I took a Q-tip and dried out that little hole you pointed out in Solution #3. Bingo. Thank you so much!!
i thought only one burner would be usable thanks to your video i saved money almost called someone to fix when it was just an oil clogged. ❤ all the best
Thank you sir!!! Not only did I fix the issue with two of the burners on my stove, I learned something new and useful! It was as a easy as cleaning that tiny little orifice and both burners are working now.
OMG, BILL!!!! Can't thank you enough for this!!!!! Have been trying all kinds of different search phrases to finally find someone that truly shares helpful insight for trouble shooting! I'll give it a go and see how it works out. thanks again! ~Norm
So I haven't had a working stove ever since my neighbor tried to do a good deed and completely drenched my stove while cleaning it. I've been waiting for maintenance( 2 weeks !) to come and now I just found your video and realized she didn't put one of the top pieces the flat piece on top of the burner. The stove is fine lol Really appreciate how thorough you were in this video if you didn't show the video I won the realized there is three separate pieces to stove top that come off. Bottom ,middle, and top ... pretty simple 😁
Thank you for the tips! I had a spillover on my stove that left debris in that small hole you spoke about in the last segment. I cleaned it out and my stove was working again! Thank you so much!
Cleaning that little hole worked perfectly for me! I was facing a trip charge ($60) and parts/labor from a local appliance company. Yeah! Thanks for the valuable info!
You're amazing. Jenn-air was clicking, stove looked clean, but as soon as I took all the covers off WOOSH, that beloved fav front right burner leapt to life. Thanks so much
This made a lot of sense. I had some knobs that wouldn't click and some burners that wouldn't click, but there was no correlation between the two. Knowing that the knob circuitry is combined helped.
The moment he showed the small hole that gas needs to get through, I went into my kitchen and fixed my problem, which is: there are sparks, but gas just won't light. That little hole was clogged. A needle does the work. Great video, very helpful!

Finally a real tech expert. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much. I did what you said about the little hole and voilà, my burner is working again. Thank you for saving me a call to the repair man/woman.
Thanks Bill. You saved me a repair bill. Appreciate your help.
I had just washed the burners and couldn't figure out why they wouldn't light (they all clicked). The oven is only 2 months old??! I took a Q-tip and dried out that little hole you pointed out in Solution #3. Bingo. Thank you so much!!
Very helpful. Cleaned the pin hole where the gas go through. Now 4 stoves are working. Thank you!
i thought only one burner would be usable thanks to your video i saved money almost called someone to fix when it was just an oil clogged. ❤ all the best
Thank you sir!!! Not only did I fix the issue with two of the burners on my stove, I learned something new and useful! It was as a easy as cleaning that tiny little orifice and both burners are working now.
Thanks Bill all mine where clicking n sparking but one didn't lite. Cleaning the ignition pinhole did the trick. You're a lifesaver.
OMG, BILL!!!! Can't thank you enough for this!!!!! Have been trying all kinds of different search phrases to finally find someone that truly shares helpful insight for trouble shooting! I'll give it a go and see how it works out. thanks again! ~Norm
Thanks, Bill! I just got two non-lighting burners to work in about ten seconds after watching your video. Great instructional!
April Mendis Awesome! Thanks for Watching!
Thanks! Cleaning out the gas hole solved my problem. Really appreciate not having to call a repairman!
So I haven't had a working stove ever since my neighbor tried to do a good deed and completely drenched my stove while cleaning it.
I've been waiting for maintenance( 2 weeks !) to come and now I just found your video and realized she didn't put one of the top pieces the flat piece on top of the burner.
The stove is fine lol
Really appreciate how thorough you were in this video if you didn't show the video I won the realized there is three separate pieces to stove top that come off. Bottom ,middle, and top ... pretty simple 😁
Thank you for the tips! I had a spillover on my stove that left debris in that small hole you spoke about in the last segment. I cleaned it out and my stove was working again! Thank you so much!
Thanks dude. Fixed my burner in about 2 minutes after watching this.
Thanks Bill for the tips. Just clean my Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool) burner after a spill a few weeks ago, and the burner lights up like a champ.
Cleaning that little hole worked perfectly for me! I was facing a trip charge ($60) and parts/labor from a local appliance company. Yeah! Thanks for the valuable info!
Had Problem #3 and was able to fix. Was just about to call a repair guy. Thank you so much!
Thank you Bill, you saved me a handyman visit. The little hole feeding gas to the spark was blocked with gunk. After cleaning, works great!
This is exactly what I needed -- how to diagnose a burner not lighting. Saved me a ton of steps replacing parts.
The moment he showed the small hole that gas needs to get through, I went into my kitchen and fixed my problem, which is: there are sparks, but gas just won't light. That little hole was clogged. A needle does the work. Great video, very helpful!
Thank you for sharing this information! After checking my stove again, I realized the holes must be clogged! I cleaned them and everything works! Yay!
