- FULL BOOST-FULL RESULTS!! After running Nitrous on our 496 BBC, it was finally time for Boost! Check the results of the 496 BBC Stroker, run first with a 6/71 from the Blower Shop & Speedmaster, then a Procharger F1A-94 supercharger (with EFI). Who wants over 1,000 HP? Here's How!
i love the old school look of the roots.
.....gotta love the look & whine of an old skool huffer, especially in a boat!!! 😉
You keep bringing us amazing info! The 6-71 results were very interesting, that could be a great street combo. Going back to part 1, that “little” 496 NA torque curve is a thing of beauty! I want one for my 71 C-10!
This four ninety six in my fleetwood right now stock 325 hp 38 rpm. It's got 488 Dana Not sure about the converter. I've got everything in this rv to make one hell of a race car. Need a 4 link
Fun to see the uphill power curve that never stops.
No doubt that motor was pulling hard
Always happy to see anything you you put out Richard of course I've had a few drinks so it's all good bring it on keep it coming!.... P.S. thank you...
drinks help
That's what I told an old girl at the bar last week. Except her name wasn't Richard.
This channel is so much better than the comp cam videos. Glad you started your own channel. Subbed!!
That thing is a beast, it loved the pro charger!!!
I'd like to see the 496 with twin 80s. love the videos keep them coming. what kind of timing u have on procharger setup
28-29 degrees
Would like to see you install piston squirters like one avail from BTR and see if affects the timing you can run from decreased piston t temps
Do some twin eBay gt45
Richard Holdener What was Compression ratio on the n/a 496?
I ask because I like what you build and I am running a 496 running 11.4 all motor 71 el camino 4100# all metal car ,the CR is 10:5:1 ,all forged internals AFR 305 cnc heads , can I build a twin turbo with this parts and CR? keep posting excellent explaint ,much much better than most Universitys Profesors ,Hope to hear from you soon .Saludos fom Hot Puerto Rico,Be safe blessings to tonand Family members.
Richard Holdener JAVIERCJR@HOTMAIL.COM ,if I need to buy parts and you sell them please email me with the parts list thanks
Great video Richard. Do you have a video of the actual 496 build and what parts you used? I looked through your video collection and did not see one.
Really appreciate the content you put out, this is very average guy combination that work and can be attained for the do it your self guys! The variety of combinations is great and gives good information to what someone could expect from a engine combo there looking into!!!
Good thing about those things as you can run. Pump Gas.maby 60/40 100L lead av
"...1050 Dominator, which is awesome". I love it.
Would you do a series on the history of speed part manufactures ? Some of those guys were wilder than the motors they built i.e. Don Hampton Superchargers , the Lunati family , etc.
Gary Bower (not Dyer----different guys) had the best advertising in the early 70s: buxom bombshell Carol Lang in a Bowers Blowers crop top! Underboob city! My 12 year old reptilian brain was so impressed, I remember her name 45 years later!
Id love a 632 deal , im building one now all n/a untill a shot of 400 of giggle gas , pump fuel , your a good guy and id love too see a bigg cube bbc
I'm a bbc dude myself I have a 6-71 ( refit GMC ) , ive got a Weiand 8-71 and a SSI 14-71 for the alcohol combo . All bbc great combos
Yeah I'm a bbc also but I picked up a 6-71 sbc on a good deal come to find out it's a large journal my boost is coming in at 4200 @5_6 psi, it's my first blower motor , now I'm kinda glad I spun #8 bearing on the big block,I might just put a blower on it now that it's apart any suggestions just short of alcohol?
They are heavy but so sweet! Wider bore and canted valves super unshrouded torque beast.
Definitely would have like to seen a 8-71 on it. Roots blown big blocks make so much brutal torque, it’ll break the 4L60e in the car next to it.
Great video, reminds me of Monster Trucks, running a 540CI BBC with an 8:71, 10% underdriven and cranking out 1450+
On methanol.
I’ll always be a nitrous guy at heart, but pro chargers are the ultimate street/strip power adder in my opinion.
Anthony Thomas, I’ve ridden in some cars with pro chargers, they didn’t need nitrous. 👍🏻
Thank you for wisdom!!!
Another AWESOME VIDEO !!! THANK YOU!! the only thing I would have liked different , see the 6-71 run overlaid with the Procharger.. thank you!
That was awesome I’m trying to run a pro charger on my 496 blue print
It's really so cool to see the difference between positive displacement and a centrifugal supercharger! The huffer was making 725ft-lbs at just over 3500rpm when that pull started. The centrifugal is still below 700ft-lbs starting and punches through 725ft-lbs at 4150rpm. Of course the centrifugal cruises past the Huffer peak torque 250rpm later. Procharger is rising torque at 45 degrees well past.
Would love to see an 8-71 vs F1-A!
You don't have the supercharger water to air intercooler plate I don't believe?
TBS has an advanced teflon stripped 3 lobe high helix rotor design in a hard anodized case. Supposed to be 60% better efficiency and capable of higher differentials without causing the atmosphere to spontaneously combust lol. That, combined with the TBS 5050 intercooler might just make the old school as capable as the new school. Which is amazing and then some for anyone going with a rod or something coming up through the hood.
Two videos in two days heck yea
Don't make me put up a 3rd!
Would love to see a third.
Dare you bruh
Tom Campbell I double dog dare him 😂🤘
Only thing missing? The turbo supercharged nitrous equipped version lol turbo blow through carb 8/71 port wet nos system setup lol
He’s probably editing the video for that as we speak 😂
Guy at the strip " what power adder you running?"
"...........yes?" 🤣
Love the Video - tons of information
Talking BB, I am very curious as to GMs Original L88 427 - their ZL1 & their Reproduction Updated ZL1 Crate (19166392) for comparisons.
Fords 427, 428 & 429, then Mopars 426 & 440, all stock of course.
Thanks & keep up the great work
I got a 496 in my Fleetwood. RV when I'm done with the RV. I'm gonna put an 871 on it. They're in my 68 Camaro.
Very nice. Thank you for posting so many good engine summary videos.
The best channel on RUclips!!! Keep it coming!
Turbos next Richard, TURBOS!!
Awesome videos bud!! Not trying to brown nose but u answered more questions then I ever expected!
Glad I could help!
Does your go to cam in a 496 bbc have a choppy idle sound
ProCharger FTW🤘🏼
awesome power numbers ....great video..
good video . Thanks
Wealth of knowledge again. Thanks for the great content!
Liked, shared and subscribed to the best, no nonsense RUclips channel around! Another awesome test series!!
Anyone else have this speedmaster kit and the idler bracket not line up to top pulley? I'm gonna have to really long spacers on. Don't want to. I've been told having the pulley flipped that way is bad for snout bearing.
Am I restricted by my camshaft selection? If I have a more aggressive cam, would it keep me from switching from a single plane manifold and incorporating a blower
what is your cam
It would of been cool if you included prices $$$. Your dino combos are great 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Lawdy... the transmission that would need to be behind this beast and survive
Monster, Kilgore, Rossler, they're out there.
To be honest, you can get a crate motor bbc with a warranty that makes 1000+ hp on pump gas normally aspirated, if that is your ultimate goal. If you are going C screw, then you should run methanol for cooling and larger tuning window. ProChargers seem to be the trend, directly driven from the crank. Take your 1000hp NA motor to 2000+ if you decide that you want to take to the next level. A good CGI treatment on an iron block works wonders.
I was wondering...im gonna get a 2002 gmc 2500hd 8.1l anf that comes with a 5 spd allison 1000 trans. I cant seem to find anything on building that trans for more hp and tq thats not for the duramax version. Considering its the same trans as the duramax, will a build kit work fine in the trns with an 8.1l?
NO IDEA ON TRANSMISSION
Blower for me nothing looks or sounds as badass and a blower on a big block
Thanks for the great info!
Would love to see a screw supercharged engine with a big turbo on it at the same time.
Gale Banks is doing that to a 7L duramax right now
love your vids dude to awesome !!
Now to combine the nitrous with the procharger. Thanks for the testing. I'm considering a similar combo for my 96 camaro.
Nothing beats a 6-71 on top of a big block for people to OOoo and AAAhhh over...What compression was the BB at?
8-71s are as good, if not better.
What r the internals build sheet on 496?
Thanx 👍🏼
If you go back to the original video, he gives that data to you in the video: ruclips.net/video/vcyvUPrBnw4/видео.html
@@Anarchy-Is-Liberty Thank you
YOU SHOULD BE COMPARING THE 871 VS THE F1A PROCHARGER. THE 671 IS MORE STREET, MORE COMPARABLE TO A PS1.
Can you tell us what cam you ran with this combo. Rocker arm size and length of push rods
I think it was the comp br300-14
So 6.8 psi from the 6-71 and 11.0 from the pro charger and 200 hp gain on procharger combo not really a fair comparison but I get the point of the comparison I agree an 8-71 would be much better and I believe the roots blower would pull allot harder from idle to say 4000 rpm either way I love your videos and information am I roots blower guy ? Yes I am
Do you have any hemi stuff at high RPM?
Would an 8-71 be better for a big block and make more power than a 6-71 blower?
it flows more so it can make more power
Keep them coming!
I noticed you did not use blower carbs. Did you just jet up a lot and run a 10.5 power valve?
on the dyno it is easy-just jets
i just found your channel as want a truck and not able to buy new (they costing way too much now days), so looks like have to find older truck that may need rebuild. between the 2, blower and procharger, which would be more fuel efficient? will be looking at more of your vid's for information, been long time out of building motors, like 25 years if not more. maybe can say what BBC is best for building, parts avail, dependability? thanks.
procharger would be more fuel efficient but a blown big block wont be great with either
Boost ftw
Great video 👍
After seeing these power adders, how much more would it like a bigger hit of nitrous?
IT WOULD TAKE MORE
I am not a Chevy guy but the big block Chevy is a really ideal engine. It’s good.
Hey Richard I would like to see what kind of horsepower a 468 with a set of 990 rectangle port iron heads and a turbo would make ,this one would be for the guys that have some of these basic BBC parts laying around,or low budget!!!
My sixty eight camaro convertible came with a Forty over three ninety six rectangular port heads steel crack ten and a half one. Put 2 125 shot nitrous plates in the day .2 bottles. Wired it all together. 410 12 bolt stock rs. Man that thing never won a race blew the tires off every time. All over the dam place. But most fun
Pretty sure a 871 would have been more applicable in this situation 😅
Would have loved to procharged the 8.1 in the 2500 HD because black lines matter
Richard Holdener
Good videos man. I was thinking, you should do a test between a 6-71 or a 8-71 with carburetors vs the same blower with the EFI set up like Cletus McFarland has in his 632 in his 3rd Gen Camaro. It would be interesting to see the differences how the curves are and if the EFI is worth buying. Thanks , Matt
My current 10.5 to 1 496 has a long rod 6.535 so my piston skirt is short. Would that be a problem when adding a pro charger?
F1A-94 or F1X will probably be my next supercharger. D1sc spinning close to max, need more power! :) Richard, ever do any P1sc vs D1sc vs D1X, also testing various pulley sizes getting up close to max rpm? I think if I spin it more it will just dump heat.
I have done some comparison with D1SC and F1A-94
Super informative! Thanks for sharing. What compression pistons did you use?
10:1 or so
Where can I find a 454 lol there not easy to find for me
Richard ..,I'm pretty sure the 671 Is more suited to the smaller inch motors and the 871 more at home ..but what if you built a small inch BB like say the one In Spiro Pappas Original all steel NMCA 69 Camaro .Single Turbo Big block ...
think of the blower as just power potential. The 8-71 will support more power than the 6-71 on any size motor
To my understanding, a 496 is a 454 stroked. I am curious is your 496 stock crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons or forged. I am also curious about the compression ratio good comparisons. I rather run the NOS, but I never found a motor to safely run it on, and I would run at least 200. I wonder how much of a hit of NOS that motor can take safely.
496 is .060 over bore and 4.25 stroke
@@richardholdener1727 Thank you.
Love this channel
Do a procharger test with the blower at XX psi, then pulley it for max rpm and add a wastegate set to XXpsi and see what it changes in the powerband. Hmmm
Your amazing mate
Awesome content. Thank you for your effort. Two thumbs up!!!! Are IATs relevant with that type set-up?
not really at these boost levels-carbs cool the 6-71 and ATW on the Procharger at only 11 psi
I think there is a lot of tire purchases with any of the combos.
Take my money
can the pro charger intercooler pipes go downwards to fit into smaller engine bays ?
Why only a 6-71 and not an 8 or 10-71...??
So what would have been the numbers if you would have used an 8-71 roots blower and ran the same amount of boost? It doesn't seem apples to apples since you ran a smaller roots blower at half the boost? I'd like to see an 8-71 at 11pounds of boost like you ran through the procharger...
the Procharger would make more than the 8-71-I've tested that-but less low-speed
I got lost in the details, but is the current 8.1L basically the same bottom end as the 454 with a stroker kit? or are they vastly different? Thanks for the vids, I learn a ton, but still looking for 5.3L easy...
different engine family
Richard, your videos are great. Can you do a video on the 8.1l that will consider torque increases for hauling and stay smog legal for us truck guys?
I've got the same 6/71 blower with 50 tooth lower and 55 tooth upper pulley with a flat top piston 10.5 to 1. does that put me at 14 to 1 compression. would I be better off with a 45-46 crank pulley for a street able rat rod.
the boost/compression comparison is misleading-what is your boost level? and fuel
@@richardholdener1727 10.5 to 1 , running on gasoline, E85 isn't at any of the local stations. I have 2 predator carbs on it now. I was told I need to run 114 octane gas but that too is nowhere to be found here.I can get 110 oct at the local dirt tracks for $11 a gallon . I need to get it on 97 oct. if possible, even if I have to add octane boost.
What I saw was NA this was only up 40-50 from the 408 LS stroker motor, and the LS weighs significantly less, so the loss in HP doesn't matter.
Some of us just want a big block or don't like LSes. I have my reasons, which are my business.
What was the starting static compression ratio. I am at 9.6:1 would love to do a roots blower .
over 10
Could you point out rotating assembly and heads & cam for the pro charger set up ?
I'm building a 540 with a b&m 420 mega blower with dominator EFI angry drive by wire throttle bodies and LS coils, I wish you were on the east coast to make some pulls with it!
Anthony Thomas true, and I have access to a few good ones, but having someone time a efi blown big block that has experience doing it is hard to find. Paying someone to figure it out on my $20k motor and hope they don’t lean it out and hurt something is daunting
I'd guess a 10-71 would be better suited for near 500 cubes... and a superchiller to make it more comparable the the f1 intercooled
Gosh awesome numbers right there
At 3500rpm the 6/71 made 200ftlb more torque than the procharger. So if you want to blow the tires loose off of idle get the 6/71. If you want a screamer get the procharger lol.
Compression?
Hey, @RichardHoldener, how about a test on one of the junk yard Gen 6 big blocks motors to see best torque and HP NA on 89 octane.
The biggest question I have is what manual transmission would you put behind that 496 with the 6-71?
@@dj4monie do you think a SM465 would live?
You could do a billet internals Ford toploader too, but the question is how much do you want to spend and how long does it have to last? GM also put a Zf650 behind the Vortec 8.1l in HD trucks. They are huge, heavy and insanely tough with a sycronized reverse. The most I've seen in a magazine is 1750ft lbs from a Cummins sent through one with factory internals to all four wheels. The 8.1 bellhousing works as well.
@@timothybayliss6680I didn't even think about a modern diesel transmission............. HOLLY CRAP!
@@timothybayliss6680 thanks for the bell ringer brother!
@@timothybayliss6680 you just rung the bell! Thanks brother! Now time to hunt for a ZF650!
Hi ! I have 496 put in my dragster and take out the injection and know i want to put in on 671 inside but my problem is i dont have idea where buy intake for supercharger 671 you have idea place to find IT?
Becouse 496 engine Is not easy for performance parts
The 496 is begging for an 8-71... 6-71 is great for small blocks and the street. I'd like to see the comparison with this motor.
What was the compression of the BBC ?
10
How many hours in the dyno room do you have in this 3 way test?
243rd 👍's up guys thanks for taking the time for us all
Richard, we would love to see this thing with say a set of gt45s ha
Go check past videos. He put 2 GT45's on a big block already. China import one's at that.
What would that BBC do with compressed air supercharging?
